MFM Style Director DANIEL RHONE answers your sty le and fashion conundrums.

I think there’s a fine line between looking like you’re a pro athlete and making an understated effort. With the technical training wear available now the opportunity to wear real high tech, functional sportswear to train in is available for anyone Check out Mr Porter’s new sportswear branded section on www.mrporter.com . But for me I still think a good plain cotton tee and cotton shorts should be the outfit of choice whatever fitness level you are at. One other note, treat your running shoes like you would do your luxe sneaker or brogues. When its time to let go. Let go!

I’vE jUST jOINED A NEW GYM AND I’M IN A PICkLE AS TO WHAT TO WEAR. I DON’T WANT TO WEAR MY OLD RUGBY TOP AND WORN OUT TRACk BOTTOMS BUT AT THE SAME TIME I DON’T WISH TO BE SEEN AS TRYING TOO HARD. WHAT SHOULD I WEAR? jOHNNY FROM DURHAM

I’M LOOkING TO PURCHASE A GOOD LOOkING, TIMELESS WATCH BUT HAvEN’T GOT THE £1000 PLUS BUDGET. I WANT SOMETHING THAT I CAN WEAR FOR WORk WITH A SUIT BUT ISN’T TOO FORMAL SO I CAN WEAR IT AT THE WEEkEND. ANY SUGGESTIONS? jOSEPH FROM NORTH LONDON

Depends on your preference of style Joseph? If you’re after something clean and minimal with a classic style then I would recommend Daniel Wellington watches www.danielwellington.com. If you want something a bit sportierand masculine I would have a gander at the fantastic range from Briston watches www.briston-watches.com and Swiss army specialists Victorinox www.victorinoxwatches.com

I REALLY WANT TO GO FOR A SUIT WITH SHORTS THIS SUMMER BUT NOT SURE HOW TO PULL IT OFF? k ASIM FROM BIRMINGHAM

Kasim, remember ‘fortune favours the brave’. I also have tinkled with the idea of rocking a short suit this season, though there are a few fundamentals I believe you need to have in place beforehand. Definitely don’t buy a novelty summer colourunless you really have to. Start with a light weight navy cotton jacket and short combo with the idea of braking up the full on colour block with a unstructured beige blazer with a navy short for a more inconspicuous approach. Another point would be to have the right footwear. Personally I think this look demands a sturdy approach in the way of a Derby or firm brogue rather than a delicate loafer or slipper. There are no better references than the American duo of designer Thom Browne and style icon Nick Wooster to follow when it comes to wearing a ‘short’ suit.

The first thing I would consider is adding some brown or tan leather shoes which would be a brogue or smart loafer into your dress down Friday wardrobe. I would assume that the strict business dress code that you adhere to includes the old fashioned corporate saying ‘never brown in town’ which I personally find dated. I would also break up your formal outfit in the shape of a separate tailored jacket and trouser which would be two contrasting colours that match up. The trouser could also be a more relaxed but still sharp fitting chino. I would also lose the tie and open up that neckline. To do this with maximum effect make sure you have a button down shirt or a firm collared cutaway shirt where the collar will hold firm and keep its position when opened up.

I FIND IT HARD TO DO ‘DRESS DOWN’ FRIDAY’S AT MY WORkPL ACE WHERE MONDAY TO THURSDAY WE ARE IN STRICT BUSINESS DRESS. I STILL WANT TO APPEAR SHARPLY TURNED OUT BUT FIT INTO THE ‘DRESS DOWN’ REMIT. ANDY FROM ESSEX

Ways to wear The Navy SuitThe modern man needs to have versatility in his life where he can go from the office to drinks in town or from business meeting to dinner with friends. The navy three piece suit is something every man should have or consider having in his wardrobe regardless of his job. Whether for the office or for occasion the navy three piece can be built up as easily and it can be dressed down. Here are 5 ways to get the most out of the navy three piece suit..

Page 10: Mens Fashion Magazine - Edition #9 - August 2015

August 2015 3www.mensfashionmagazine.coM

1) THREEPIECE DRESS UP

Dressing the three piece navy suit to its highest order is probably more suited to a formal occasion like a wedding or evening function, though you could wear to the office. For a formal occasion I would keep it classic with a white shirt but for an evening affair I would match up with a slim navy tie and pocket square to separate from business dress.

2) DRESSDOWN WITH DENIM

Using the sharp tailored jacket from the three piece suit with denim jeans is ideal for less formal evening affairs with friends like dinner or drinks and even on a date. The jeans have to be a dark, strong indigo in a slim to skinny cut to keep in sync with the sharp perception of the rest of the outfit.

3) BLACK TIE

The biggest misconception is that with black tie occasion you have to stick to wearing black only. That isn’t the case as the modern black tie dress code has flexibility with colour but still remaining ultra-formal to its tradition. With the popularity of the midnight blue tuxedo over the standard black, you could use the navy three piece depending on the darkness of the navy tone.

4) SUMMERSEPARATES

Summer is a great time to add some lighter colours in to your outfit whether in a semi-formal tone or in the work environment. You could do this in the form of pairing a lighter trouser like a cotton stone or beige chino with your tailored navy jacket paired with a sky blue button down to create the aspired summer look.

5) SPORTSWEAR INFUSION

A popular look at the moment is teaming your two piece suit with a clean white pair of tennis shoes with a fitted T-shirt for a modern, contemporary approach. For this time of year consider a fitted, linen T-shirt to add an understated tone of texture to a plain tee option while at the same time keeping you nice and cool.

es, you read the title right… Converse recently announced an updated model of the classic Chuck Taylor. Following on from our recent article yesterday on how to wear hi tops, this announcement couldn’t come at a better time. You’ve undoubtably owned or seen someone wearing the classic Converse Chuck Taylor before, and for the first time in 98 years a new update is upon us. The remade Chuck II has just been unveiled and the team at MFM at big fans.

A smart decision from Converse was to not touch the classic silhouette of the sneaker, and instead introduce and improvement to the overall comfort of the shoe. They’ve added a Nike Lunarlon sock liner to the Chuck II and they’ve also added a padded non-slip tongue. It doesn’t end there though, with addition technical detailing being added such as the perforated micro-suede lining for extra breathability. You’ll be of course pleased to know that the classic Chuck Taylor will almost be identical to it’s former, but the added technical details will allow more comfort. A few more branded details have also been added such as the AllStar logo on the heel and the painted eyelets but the biggest change is the technical upgrades.

The Affordable Grooming Guide

+ It doesn’t matter if you’re saving up, a little tight around the purse strings or just love a bargain, there’s no reason for grooming to get expensive and you can still look after your hair and skin on even the most modest of budgets.

+ Whether you’re a lover of fancy brands or not, it’s always nice to treat yourself to a little luxury but extra expense doesn’t always mean extra quality and sometimes the cheaper products can actually work much better than their expensive counter part.

+ So if you’re trying not to break the bank but want to save face why not try adding one of top five budget items to your grooming set up?

01The Go To Shower Gel: Vive by Aldi

+Who would have thought European supermarket Aldiwould be the first on this list? Aldi actually stock a very competitive men’s grooming range and this shower gel is testament to the hard work budget stores are putting in on their every day essentials. The Vive range is similar to Lynx is scent but costs a fraction of the price big brands demand. Available for : 65p for 300ml

02 The Moisturiser: Bulldog Original

+Bulldog has been a favourite of mine for years now and I only stray away very occasionally. If you’re looking for a moisturiser that isn’t full of added extras such as parabens, artificial colours and added fragrances then Bulldog is the one for you. Often found in large supermarkets such as Tesco with 50% off, this no thrills moisturiser is perfect for any basket. Available for : £6.00 for 100ml

03 The Shower Essential: Wilko Men’s Body Washer

+There has been a rise in men’s shower washers and scrubs over the past few years with plenty of the big brands pushing out their own versions. A body scrubber allows you to create a generous lather of shower gel when washing and usually has a hard, bristly back used to exfoliate the skin. Budget every day essentials store Wilko now carries their own body washer at a bargain price, which does more than stand up to the job. Available for : £1.00
