Demetra and I are delighted to welcome you to our 2015 Andrews Alumni Homecoming events. We will meet and talk fondly about our student days on this beautiful campus, compliment each other on how well we look and “have not changed a bit.” We will remember our favorite teachers and the inspiration they gave us to “go on and do important things in life.” If previous homecoming events are any indications, it will be fun, delightful and inspirational. Our Alumni office has planned a full and rich weekend for us.

The campus has changed in recent years, and those of you who have not been “home” for a while will want to explore and get acquainted with the new facilities and walkways. But above all, homecoming is a time for memories of friendships, of being young and hopeful, of worship in PMC perhaps with Dr. Becker at the organ and sensing God’s presence, of graduating and getting a wonderful start in life.

Cordially,

Niels-Erik (MA ’65, BD ’66) and Demetra (att.) Andreasen

2015 Honored AlumniThe Andrews University Alumni Association Medallion is presented to honored alumni who have been nominated by fellow alumni and approved by the Alumni Board of Directors to recipients of this award. Honored Alumni are selected on the basis of outstanding service to the University, unusual achievement in a profession or occupation, and contributions to the community or church. Byron Lynn Blagburn(BS ’75, MA ’78)

Byron L. Blagburn is currently Distinguished Uni-versity Professor in the Department of Pathology at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in Alabama. He has more than 33 years

continued

of teaching experience, authored 250 publications in peer-reviewed journals, and contributed to 18 books and chapters. Byron serves on numerous committees and boards, and has obtained more than 140 research grants totaling nearly $7 million. Byron earned two degrees from Andrews University, a Bachelor of Science in biology in 1975, and a Master of Arts in biology in 1978. “My experiences as a student at Andrews University were fundamental in my development as a person, scientist and educator,” he says. “The benefits that Andrews provided such as individual access to world-class faculty, small class size, and princi-pled leadership shaped the person that I would become. At the time, I couldn’t realize the extent of influence that Andrews University would exert on so many alumni as they traveled far from this small campus.” He went on to receive his PhD in Veterinary Medical Science from University of Illinois, specializing in parasitology. Byron’s teaching, combined with his research, has made him one of the foremost academics in his field. He has been honored for his work with more than ten prestigious awards, including the Beecham Award for Research Excellence and the American Association of Veterinary Parasitol-ogists’ Distinguished Veterinary Parasitologist Award. He has also been the advisor for more than 13 graduate theses and dissertations. Additionally, Byron has presented his work both on a national and international level, where his expertise and extensive experience is sought and highly regarded in the fields of developmental

chemotherapy, treatment and prevention of vector-borne dis-eases, diagnosis and treatment of canine and feline heartworm disease, and mechanisms of ac-tion of parasites. In addition to his extensive research, he holds the license to seven patents, mostly in the area of treatment of infectious organisms. Byron is married to Kathy, his wife of 38 years. They have a son, Matthew, who lives in Fairhope, Alabama. Both Kathy and Byron are avid outdoor enthusiasts and he is an avid nature photographer. Kathy inherited her mother’s love of plants and flowers and tends a garden of native Alabama plants and many imported species. Much of her planted garden consists of flowers from her mother’s original garden in Michigan. They enjoy traveling and experiencing the diversity of cultures around the world.

Garren Dent(AS ’85, BBA ’90)

Garren James Dent was born in Madison, Wisconsin on Sep-tember 21, 1965 and moved to Berrien Springs in 1968 where he grew up and continues to consider home. In his youth Garren developed a strong worth ethic and entrepreneur-ial spirit working as a plumber’s apprentice, construction worker, assistant on the family farm, and many other jobs. He earned a marketing degree from Andrews in 1990, and recalls the especial influence of professors Bruce Wrenn and Ralph Trecartin. After graduation, he combined his degree with his practical knowledge to start a hardware business: Berrien Springs Village Do It Best Hardware. He’s main-tained the same mandate in the years since then: “To serve customers as we would want to be served and by doing so provide financially for employees and ministries.” Garren has also served in ministry at Pioneer Memorial Church children’s Sabbath schools, Hogar de Ninos orphan-age in Honduras, Camp Sagola in the Upper Peninsula, and the Harbor of Hope church plant in neighboring Benton Har-bor. He began his ministry activities as a young man; while traveling with Randy Fishell’s youth ministry team, he met his future wife Bonny. They reconnected while working at Timber Ridge Camp together, and have been married for 27 years. They have three grown children, Konner, Emory and

Raegen; Garren considers being their father and leading them to seek God his most challenging and rewarding role. In the local Berrien Springs community Garren has had the privilege of developing valued friendships while serving on the Village Council, Optimist Club, Rotary and Chamber of Commerce. In addition, he is a board member of the Michigan Retailers Hardware Association. Within the Andrews community, Garren has shared his experience with Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) and the School of Business Administration alumni board. When not operating his busi-ness, Garren retreats with his family to a solitary place on their small farm in Buchanan, Michigan. Garren’s word to fellow alumni is to live with the realization of God’s ownership of everything: “May we be faithful with that which we are entrusted.”

OUR MISSIONThe Andrews University Alumni Association supports the Andrews mission by engaging and connecting with the university community locally, nationally, and globally. This is achieved by creating sustainable, enduring relationships with Andrews University and with each other.

The crisp autumn air and fiery hues of turning leaves create the perfect backdrop for Alumni Homecoming in southwestern Michigan. What better time to join your Andrews University family and friends for a reunion? Whether you find yourself here every year or it’s your first time in 50, thank you for making the effort to come back. Like anyone getting ready for a visit from family, volunteers, staff and faculty have been working hard to prepare for your homecom-ing. With roughly 40 events to choose from,

I’m thankful for each and everyone’s efforts to make this the best possible weekend it can be. As the fall is marked by students arriving and alumni returning, we welcome you back home. May your visit to campus be most memorable and enjoyable. Most importantly, thank you for being our honored guests.

Warmly,

PARKING GUIDELINES ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Katerina Jo Adamos (BFA ’13)Katerina Jo Adamos, a San Francisco Bay Area native, attended Andrews University from 2008–2013, gradu-ating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in visual communication-graphic design. She began her time at Andrews as a journalism major, before realizing that she liked designing better than writing and reporting, and changed to graphic design. She also completed a minor in French and the undergraduate Leader-ship Certificate. After interning with ModCloth, Katerina accepted a position at John McNeil Studio, a design and ad agency in Berkeley, California. As an artist, Katerina’s goals include learning more about user experience and human-computer interaction, cre-ating more illustrations, and starting her own business. You can learn more about her work at katerinajo.com.
