Ho s t o f Di s c ov e r y Chann e l s award-w i n n i n g s e r i e s a ndAmerica s most popular rea l it y show The Amazing Race , Phi l Keoghan s CV i s so packed with act iv ity i t earned him a spot on a te levi sion documentary cal led Radical Career ing . Butfew of h i s internat ional fans would be aware that not on lywas he born in New Zealand and attended boarding school

here , but that he also got his f irst break in televis ion workinga s a c a m e r a m an a t T V N Z s C h r is t c h u r c h s t u d i o s .

Before too long , people l ike Bryan Alpress recognised in theyoung Keogh an a flair for perform ing in front of t he camera

and he was given a r o l e ho s t i ng ch ildren s programme Spot On , fo l lowed by 3 .45 Live . It was around thi s t ime , when he was just 19 , that Phil had a near-death experience, diving ona wreck 40 meters down. For the first time in my life I thought,my God, I could really die , and I came out of that with a newsense of purpose , a knowledge that I had to really l ive now.

After the near-death exper ience , Ph i l wrote a l i s t of the th ings he wanted to do before he died , and then set about doing them even though it involved moving with his girlfriend(now his wife) Louise to New York.

However , the brush with death became the foundation for a p h i l o s oph y h e ha s d ev e l op ed mor e r ec e n t l y ca l l ed NoOpportunity Wasted , or NOW. You wr ite a contract for the l ife you really want , you find a passion for the l ife y ou reallywant. That s really what drives me passion I love unleashingp e op le s pa ss i on .

When I was 19 , my l i s t was a very se l f i sh l i s t , he recal l s.

Today, his l ists are very different: I get as much of a thril l out o f he lp i ng o ther s tap i n t o the i r pot en t ia l a s I have i nfulfil l ing my own dreams and my l ist as it stands now 19 yearsl a t e r i s v e r y g e a r e d a r o u n d h e l p i n g o t h e r p e o p l e .

So how did thi s Kiwi -born man becomesuch an iconic adventurer and traveller?

The travel bug was probably insti l led inh im f r om b i r t h h e s a y s . H i s fa t h e r , a

Lincoln College agronomist , travelled thew o r l d s t u d y i n g p l a n t s a t d i f f e r e n t u n i v e r s i t i e s i n C a n a d a a n d t h e Car ibbean r eturn i ng f r om t r ip s w i th s t o r i e s a n d o f t e n w i t h o t h e r p l a n t specialists or musicians .

My mum was a mus ic teacher , and our house was always f i l l ed with mus ic ians

and interest ing people coming through . Iguess that s where I got a real passion forpeople .

Being uprooted at the age of 12 to travelall the way to New Zealand a strangeri n a s t range land he hadn t s een s ince a t oddler w i th a Wes t I nd ian accent ,playing the violin and not knowing anything

a b o u t r u g b y , w a s a n u n n e r v i n g a n dcharacter -bu i lding exper i ence f or h im .

He was incredibly homes ick , but phonecalls to Trinidad were very expensive, andhis parents could only afford to bring himh o m e o n c e a y e a r f o r t h e C h r i s t m a shol idays .

Being different then was not cool . Youwere supposed to f i t in , be the same asever yone e l s e , h e r ecal l s . I n Tr i n idad Iused to be one of just a few white kids inmy c la ss , a nd sudden l y I m i n a p lace where I look l ike everyone else but on thei n s ide , I m d if f eren t .
