The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s basketball team have been one of the most consistent squads over the last five years. Under the direction of head coach Scott Clark, the WolfPack have made the post season consistently.

The WolfPack enter the 2018-19 season with the same philosophy that Clark has utilized in the past, “Work hard on the court, in the weight room and in the classroom. At the same time, improving each game with the end result being a berth in the post season.” The team has a solid core of returning players led by fifth year Derek Rhodes of Antioch, CA, USA. Rhodes was a solid contributor offensively last season, and we can expect great things from him this year.

Michael Rouault of Vernon, BC enters his fourth season as not only a three time USPORTS Academic All-Canadian but also the winner of the Cliff Neufeld leadership athlete of the year. On the court, his

offensive and defensive numbers continue to increase to match his court time. Joe Davis of Kamloops, BC also goes into his fourth year, averaging a team high of 15.3 points per game. Both Rouault and Davis started every game in the 2017-18 season.

Tyus DeVries of Chilliwack, BC of was named to the Canada West all-rookie team. He averaged 23.9 minutes, with 6.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. He will get increased minutes this season. Another player who will be counted on for more offense will be import Anton Bilous of Cherkassy, Ukraine. Bilous averaged 10.9 points in his first USPORTS season after transferring from a US junior college in Texas.

Other players who can expect to see more court time as well will be third year guard Madhu McConnell of Victoria, BC and second year forwards Jon Steele of Chilliwack, BC and Devin Halcrow of Kamloops, BC, who was named the team’s most improved player last season.

After sitting out last season, American Enrico Nuno of Half Moon Bay, CA will be an infusion of offensive ability into the TRU line-up this year.

Clark has signed a number of top high school prospects this year, including Richard Mageto, a 6’1” guard from Surrey, Nathan Pasloske, a 6’4” guard from Nanaimo, BC, and Brendan Sullivan a 6’1” guard from Mill Bay, BC. Sullivan was a provincial final MVP.

Clark had two local players successfully walk into the program this September. They are Tyler Schiller of Barriere, BC and Evan Jumanga of Kamloops, BC.

SCOTT CLARK HEAD COACHClark was hired as the head coach of the men’s basketball program at TRU in 2010. Clark is the third head coach in the WolfPack program’s Canada West history. Since his arrival, the TRU men’s program has improved every year.

In the 2015-16 season, Clark led the WolfPack to their first Canada West divisional title in the Explorer Division and their first ever berth in the CIS Basketball Nationals Final 8. In the 2016-17 season, the WolfPack made the post season and beat Brandon University in a play in series before bowing out to the University of Calgary Dinos.

Clark spent fifteen years with the Simon Fraser Unversity Clan, leading their men’s basketball team. Under his leadership, the team made the playoffs ten years in a row.

“This was a great opportunity,” says Clark, who ended up moving closer to his parents and friends in Kelowna, BC. “I’m eager to continue laying a foundation for a program which continues to improve.”

Clark describes himself as a coach who is demanding but fair. He immediately jumped into the Kamloops basketball scene by holding shooting clinics, starting the Junior Wolves program for elementary school aged students and a mentorship program for athletes from grades 10-12.

Clark holds a Master’s degree in coaching. He attended the National Coaching Institute in Victoria, BC and has been a CIS coach for over twenty years. He is married to his lovely wife, Carla and has two stepsons, Brett, who played five years with the WolfPack, and Cole, who ran for one season with the TRU cross country team.

Clark is very committed to his player’s success on and off the court along with their involvement in the community.

Joe loves representing TRU in a competitive field as well as at community events. His favourite community event is the Raise a Reader event because it’s a great cause and is well supported by the community. Joe’s favourite visiting gym is UVIC because his father travels from Powell River to watch him. Joe’s favourite moment as a member of the WolfPack was beating Brandon University in the Canada West play-in series two years ago. In that game, TRU rallied from a 1-0 deficit to take the best of three series. His advice to incoming athletes is, “Use your resources and communicate with your loved ones.” One thing Joe’s teammates might now know about him is that he was chased by a bear once while hiking. If you were to see Joe out at karaoke, he could be singing Dr. Hook’s “Millionaire”. His dream job is to become a professional basketball player. About Joe, Coach Clark says, “Just a hard-working guy. Has a multitude of post moves. He is a tough cover because he can score close to the post but he can also step back and make the jump shot. He is left handed and plays with great physicality and energy. Had an outstanding year last year and I am expecting the same in 2018-19.”

Both helped Brentwood College win back-to-back BC “AA” high school championships in 2017 and 2018. This will be their fourth year as teammates. Nathan was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He has an impressive resume aside from those two championships, including being a first team all-star at the 2017 championships, winning a bronze medal as a U14 player at the BC Summer Games, and having all-star selections at the 2018 Kodiak Classic and Abbotsford Snowball tournaments. Nathan averaged sixteen points, seven rebounds, 2.5 steals and one block per game last season. He also shot 45% in field goals and 35% from beyond the arc last year. His father Kirby is his biggest influence because of his work ethic. He has always shown Nathan that he can accomplish anything he wants if he works hard enough. If Nathan could appear on any TV show, he would like to be on The Trailer Park Boys. The most offbeat thing Nathan has ever done was when he and his team all died their hair with blond tips in the eleventh grade. Nathan enjoys hanging out with friends, playing sports, watching movies, and playing video games. About Nathan, Coach Clark says, “High school teammate of Sully. Nate is a guy who is 6’4”, 6’5”. Handles the ball extremely well. Very intelligent. He has great composure. He has been a little banged up. Same vein as Sully—has to be a guy who needs experience and on court maturity. The upside is very high.”
