2010-11 RMU Basketball NEC Champions: 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990, 1992, 2009, 2010

When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of AthleticsCraig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketballprogram, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 35-yearDivision I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall CenterMay 11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as headcoach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 20-14 (.588).

Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris.

In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading theColonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the NortheastConference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, fallingshy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime to Long Island, 85-82.

Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole will lead a programin 2011-12 that is looking for its third NEC Tournament championship in four years, a feat that hasbeen accomplished only once in league history. The Colonials won the 1989, 1990 and 1992 NECTournament crowns.

“Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said.“Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the rightdirection.”

Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the lastfive years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of two, three, four and five years.

Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 108-56 (.659),with the 108 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. Since Toole joined the staff in2007-08, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 91-45 (.669).

While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last four years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 58-14 (.806) against league opposition

and enter the 2011-12 season having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the champi-

onship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff.RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16

years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac inthe 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn.

In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT),dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010,RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventhNEC Tournament championships, respectively.

In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-upMichigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at theDunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime.

At 31 years old, Toole is the youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at

Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to

player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped leadLafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh.

Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served asthe director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management forthe nation's largest high school exposure camp.

Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) beforetransferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03).

Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per con-test. Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt.Lebanon, Pa.

Robert Morris outscored Saint Peter’s,16-8, in points off turnovers.

Defensively Getting It Done - Robert Morris is coming off a 2010-11 season in which itled the Northeast Conference in scoring defense, yielding an average of just 65.5 pointsper game. The Colonials are continuing in that vain this season, as Rider scored just 57points in its season opener against RMU (11/11/11), while Saint Peter’s was held to 52points against Robert Morris (11/15/11). It marks the first time in school history thatthe Colonials have opened a season holding back-to-back opponents to under 60points.

The CW Network - Redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams, arguably the purestshooter on the roster and one of the best in the Northeast Conference, has picked upright where he left off from the 2010-11 campaign. Williams led the NEC last year inthree-point field goal percentage at 46.6 percent (48-for-103) and through the firsttwo games of this season has drained eight of his 17 attempts (47.1%) from long range.Williams paced the Colonials with a career-high 28 points in RMU’s season opener, an83-57 win over Rider (11/11/11). For those efforts he was tabbed NEC Co-Player of theWeek (11/13/11) with Travis Nichols of St. Francis (N.Y.).

Streakers - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones and redshirt sophomore guard CoronWilliams each enter Saturday’s game @ Penn with consecutive double-figure scoringgame streaks intact. Jones has scored at least 10 points in each of his last eight gamesdating back to last season, while Williams has turned the trick in six straight contests.Jones is averaging 16.1 points over his last eight games, while Williams has produced an18.3 points per game average in his last six contests. Over the last eight games datingback to the 2010-11 season, Jones and Williams have combined to shoot 54.5 percent(42-for-77) from beyond the arc.

The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last threeseasons, as the redshirt junior enters Saturday’s game @ Penn owning the longestactive streak for both games played and games started. Jones has played in 69 straightgames for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and has earned 54 straight starts.Jones owns 64 career starts overall, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial.Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson ranks second for Robert Morris in careerstarts with 29. Jones and Johnson have each appeared in 69 consecutive games forRMU, the longest active streak, while junior forward Lijah Thompson is next, havingappeared in 46 consecutive games.

Board Games - A big key to the success that Robert Morris has had over the last fourseasons has been due in large part to the program’s ability to crash the boards. Sincethe beginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 70-10 (.875)when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 67-8 (.893)mark when outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s two seasons as headcoach, RMU has posted a record of 15-4 (.789) when outrebounding its opponent.

A Fresh Start - Robert Morris certainly wouldn’t have been able to post an 83-57 victo-ry over Rider in its 2011-12 season opener without the contributions it received fromits four freshmen. Combined, guard Brandon Herman and forwards Lucky Jones, KeithArmstrong and Darren Washington finished with 23 points and 26 rebounds whileshooting 41.7 percent (10-for-24) from the field. Jones and Armstrong combined for 20of RMU’s 43 rebounds, as Jones grabbed 13 while Armstrong added seven. Jones fell tworebounds shy of the RMU freshman record for caroms in a game, as former ColonialAnthony Dickens (1985-90) grabbed 15 boards in a game twice during the 1985-86 sea-son.

In 2010-11, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining 59 three-pointers, whileredshirt freshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48. As a club, the Colonials finishedfourth in the NEC in 2010-11 with an average of 6.72 per game. A breakdown of the NEC’s topfive teams in three-pointers made since the 2001-02 campaign ...
