Roald Dahl Day Celebrating 100 Years

Last Tuesday Primary students (and some brave staff) celebrated the 100th Birthday of popular author, Roald Dahl, by dressing up as their favourite Roald Dahl character. PRINCIPAL’S NOTES Infants Tabloid Day - Coolah Congratulations to all the Kindergarten and Years 1/2 students on their participation at the Infants Tabloid Sports Day, held at Coolah Central School, last Friday. This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to participate in a variety of social and sporting activities with neighbouring schools. Links to learning Last Wednesday we had “Project Rockit” working with our middle year students, Years 5, 6, 7 and 8. The sessions were extremely beneficial and focused on anti-bullying and resilience training. This week our senior students are participating in Barista Training. Duke of Edinburgh Congratulations to Liam Haron, Jacob Howarth, Lachlan McKechnie, Thomas Yeo, Connor Tincknell and Jaike Mitchell for their tremendous effort on their two-day Duke of Edinburgh practice trek. Mr Neal, the Duke of Edinburgh co-ordinator, praised them for their effort and commended them for their team-work. Spelling Bee - Dubbo Last Wednesday our school Spelling Bee finalists, Ezra Geesu, Kaitlin Quick, Harry Tobin and Jaxson Mitchell, travelled to Dubbo to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee competition. All students participated extremely well. Kaitlin placed fourth in the stage three category and Ezra made it to the second round for stage three. Roald Dahl Day The students had a wonderful time on Roald Dahl Day, dressed up as their favourite Roald Dahl book characters. Outfits paraded included ‘James and the Giant Peach’, ‘The Grand High Witch’, ‘Mr and Mrs Twit’, ‘Matilda Wormwood’ and ‘Willy Wonka’. There were prizes for the best dressed and a Roald Dahl colouring in competition held in the Library during lunch. Special thanks to Mrs Archer and Mrs Davis for their organisation of the day. Chewing Gum There have been some concerns expressed about chewing gum being brought to school. Chewing gum is not permitted in schools due to problems caused with its removal and it is best left at home. Aerosols As the warmer weather approaches and students become more involved in outdoor activities they are reminded that they are only permitted to bring roll-on deodorant to school not aerosol spray cans. School Holidays We wish everyone a very happy and safe holiday! Daylight Saving commences on October 2nd which will allow students to become accustomed to the longer days before they return to school. Term 4 resumes for staff and students on Monday 10th October.

INFANTS TABLOID DAY

On Friday 16th September, thirty three students set off on buses to Coolah

for the Infants Tabloid Day. We were fortunate enough to have a break in

the weather and the sun came out many times during the day. As soon as we

arrived at Coolah we were greeted by some of the Senior Students at the

gate. We found our way into the playground with all of the other students

and quickly ate some recess. After recess we were split into mixed groups

with students from other schools. Each group was led by an older student

for the day which meant that the teachers could move between groups and

take lots of photos! The students participated in a variety of activities

throughout the day including Golf Skills, Hockey, Newcomb Ball,

Parachute Games, Soccer Skills, Balancing Beam, Trampoline, Basketball

and many more. Students moved through most of the groups before lunch time. We sat with other students for

lunch and had a small amount of play before getting straight back into the

activities. Students finished the activities and we assembled for a short

presentation where each student was given a laminated card for participation.

We had to quickly leave the school and get back on our buses to ensure we

arrived back in Mendooran before bus runs. It was a fantastic day that had been

planned well by Coolah. Well done to all students for their behaviour on the

day, and a huge thankyou to our teachers and helpers Mrs Elith, Kelly Duce,

Ged Turnbull and Morgan Sando. We would also like to extend a massive

thankyou to Fred and Anne for driving the buses for us. We really appreciate it!

Let’s get ready to do it all again next year at Binnaway.

Kindergarten/Year One Class News The students had a wonderful time at the Infants Tabloid Sports Day held at Coolah Central School last Friday, 16th September. They were treated to a vast array of fun activities and had the chance to form many new friendships with the other schools present. The Orientation sessions for the new Kindergarten students will commence in early Term 4. Dates are in the information package and also in the Mendooran Pride. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and look forward to a very busy and productive Term 4.

YEARS 1/2 CLASS NEWS YEARS 1/2 CLASS NEWS YEARS 1/2 CLASS NEWS Last week in the Years 1/2 room we were busy finishing off some

of our narrative writing which we hope to type up sometime this

week. We were also busy getting some challenging Maths work

done to keep our brains fresh and awake. The students will not

have any homework for the last week of school, but I do need

students to make sure that they have brought back all of their

home readers before the holidays begin. There will be no more

home readers going home this week for that reason. Students are

also reminded once again to make sure that they have all of their

jumpers, pants, hats, water bottles and containers collected to take

home before the holidays. Just remember boys and girls, if you

leave a jumper or pants out in the weather before the holidays, it

will be two weeks before you will have a chance to try and find

them again. Let’s try to have no clothing or person items left at

school over the holidays. I hope everyone has a happy holiday.

Remember to stay safe and be nice to others.

YEARS 3/4 CLASS NEWS

Welcome to Week 10 and our last before the holidays! This week we will be revising spelling and aspects of writing narratives. We will be finishing up our work linked to Rio – Brazil on Rainforests – The Amazon Rainforest. We will continue to read our class novel – The BFG. During the week we will have a Maths revision test. There will be no homework this week. On Friday Years 3/4 will be involved in a special event: “Minute To Win It Mini Olympics”! More details later this week. Have a great week and happy holidays.

YEARS 5/6 CLASS NEWS What a fantastic week of Project presentations we had in Years 5/6! For those students that submitted and

delivered their projects they were of a generally high standard and were

congratulated accordingly in class. A special mention needs to go to Hailey Quick

who achieved a perfect assessment score for the task. Some students delivered a

very high standard of presentation but lost marks for going over the 3-minute mark

permitted. A lesson I am sure that was learned for next term.

Project Rockit visited our class from Melbourne last week to talk to us about

Cyber Bullying and their presentation was both fun and highly engaging. The

students learned a lot about social media and how it can be used both positively

and negatively. There have been some issues regarding the use of social media in

our class this year so this talk was relevant and valuable to our Years 5/6 students.

Last week of term is upon us and we have a few minor assessments to finish off

our learning. We are hoping to watch a movie and have a class party this week so

the students will come home with the details of that today.

Thank you parents for your support this term.

After School Study Session To allow our students to perform to their potential Mendooran

Central School has decided to implement an afternoon study session at the school. This

time is designed to allow students’ access to their teachers to assist them with any

homework, assessment tasks and assignments that they may be having issues with, as a

revision session or to seek assistance with any work they may be experiencing problems

comprehending.

These sessions will take place after school for 90 minutes straight after the finish of the

school day. There will be at least one teacher in attendance and they will occur in the

school computer lab to allow all the students access to the internet should their work

require it.

In the introductory stage of this program these sessions will be offered to the Secondary

students to begin with and if successful hopefully a Primary afternoon will be established.

In order to maximise the number of students who are able to take advantage of these

sessions we are asking any interested parents and students to supply us with the best day

to run the program. To that end we would ask any interested students and parents to fill

in the form below and return to the school so we can begin these afternoons in Term 4.
