Warm-up (Who is Gregor Mendel?)
Vocabulary Find
Any remaining time will be dedicated to A-Plus
Today’s ObjectiveToday’s Objective
I will explore the life of Gregor Mendel.
I will define 16 key vocabulary term related to Mendelian Genetics.
Warm-Up (Nov. 16)Warm-Up (Nov. 16)
Use an Internet Browser (Yahoo or Google) to search “Gregor Mendel.”
Take about 10 minutes to read about his life.
Take about 5 minutes to write three to five sentences about his life.
Share your findings with the class.

Today’s ObjectivesToday’s Objectives
I will explore the use of Punnett Squares to solve simple genetics problems.
I will understand the difference between homozygous and heterozygous.
I will understand the difference between genotype and phenotype.
I will understand the difference between dominant and recessive.

AllelesAlleles
Alleles are different forms of genes.
Homozygous – both alleles are the same
Heterozygous – both alleles are different
Dominant vs. Dominant vs. RecessiveRecessive
Dominant Allele – the expressed trait it’s the trait that you see usually represented by a capital letter
Recessive Allele – the masked trait it’s the trait that’s covered up when a
dominant allele is present usually represented by a lowercase letter
Dominant vs. Dominant vs. RecessiveRecessive
In Mendel’s pea plant experiment green was dominant over yellow. G = green (dominant) g = yellow (recessive)
The Alleles for Pea Plant Color GG = homozygous green Gg = heterozygous green gg = homozygous yellow
Monohybrid CrossMonohybrid Cross
A monohybrid cross is the study of one trait only. Mendel used monohybrid crosses to study
pea plant color and form separately.
Punnett SquaresPunnett Squares
Punnett Squares show possible combinations of alleles from genetic crosses.
Punnett SquaresPunnett Squares
Phenotypes – physical characteristics 3 purple flowers 1 white flower
Genotypes – genetic makeup 1 PP (homozygous purple) 2 Pp (heterozygous purple) 1 pp (homozygous white)
