Dear MENA Teacher Summit Participants,

It is our pleasure to welcome you to Dubai and to the 2nd MENA Teacher Summit! We are delighted that you decided to spend your weekend with colleagues and are certain you will return to your schools inspired.

An initiative of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) Connected Community in the GCC, the Teacher Summit seeks to improve teaching and learning and connect education professionals throughout the MENA region to the resources provided by ASCD. Founded in 1943, ASCD is the global leader in developing and delivering innovative programs, products, and services that empower educators to support the success of each learner. The association provides expert and innovative solutions in the professional development, capacity building, and educational leadership essential to the way educators learn, teach and lead.

This regional event is a platform for American Curriculum teachers to engage and learn with renowned educators and scholars. Topics at the summit will address best practices in leadership, data, curriculum, and English Language Arts and Math Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards implementation.

Dr. Tom Hoerr led schools for 37 years and is the Emeritus Head of School of the New City School in St. Louis, MO. He is a Scholar-In- Residence at UM-St. Louis and teaches in the principal preparation program. Hoerr worked as a teacher and principal, and founded and directed the Non-Profit Management Program at Washington University in St. Louis. He leads the ISACS New Heads Network and holds a Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis.

Hoerr’s latest book is The Formative Five: Fostering Grit, Empathy, and Other Success Skills Every Student Needs. He makes the case that it is not enough to prepare students academically; we must prepare them to succeed in life. Hoerr is also the author of Fostering Grit, The Art of School Leadership, Becoming a Multiple Intelligences School, and School Leadership for the Future. He has written more than 110 articles, and his “Principal Connection” column has been in Educational Leadership since 2004. Hoerr has presented at conferences around the world on grit, leadership, multiple intelligences, faculty collegiality, instructional leadership, and Success Skills.

Patti Drapeau is an educational consultant, internationally known presenter, trainer, and author. Patti is a presenter in the United States and abroad where she presents keynote sessions as well as short and long-term workshops. Her presentation topics include: creativity, differentiation, personalized learning, integrated curriculum, instructional strategies and meeting the needs of special populations. Patti is on the part time faculty at the University of Southern Maine. She is also a consultant for the Maine Department of Education in gifted education.

Patti is the author of Sparking Student Creativity Practical Ways to Promote Innovative Thinking and Problem Solving (ASCD, 2014), Great Teaching with Graphic Organizers 2nd edition revised and updated (Hawker Brownlow, 2010), Differentiated Instruction: Making It Work (Scholastic, 2004) Great Teaching with Graphic Organizers (Scholastic, 1998). Patti developed a curriculum model for the regular classroom called “Affective Perspectives: Combining Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking, and Affect.” She authored a variety of articles for the Maine Exchange, Teaching Matters, and Understanding our Gifted. Patti has over twenty-five years of classroom experience teaching students and coordinating programs in Freeport, Maine. She coached Odyssey of the Mind, Future Problem Solving, Explorer Vision, and math teams. Patti received the New England Region Gifted and Talented award for outstanding contributions in gifted education and the Maine Educators of the Gifted and Talented award for exemplary service.

Cody Claver has spent his entire 30-year career in the field of education serving as a teacher of Social Studies and Mathematics; in school leadership positions as a principal at the elementary, middle and high school levels in the U.S. Cody has spent the past sixteen years as a member of the Danielson Group (www.danielsongroup.org) coaching and mentoring teachers and administrators in Charlotte Danielson’s work known as “The Framework for Teaching”.

Cody also served as the Head of School for a virtual charter school in the U.S. educating over 3,000 students throughout the state of Idaho using the K12 Inc. curriculum. While working for K12 he was promoted to Vice President of School Development and helped to establish other statewide virtual charter schools throughout the U.S.

In March of 2012, Cody accepted the role of Vice President of International Business Development for K12 Inc. and moved with his family to Dubai. Since then he has become General Manager for iCademy Middle East FZ-LLC exclusively using the K12 Inc. curriculum in the GCC Region to school over 750 students. Some of the projects that Cody has successfully implemented include a Blended Model Learning Center in Knowledge Village serving 100+ students, establishing a Blended Model School on the Khamis-Mushayt Compound in Abha, Saudi Arabia, and the Gems Sports Academy that uses the Blended Model approach for athletes.

Andrew Miller has been as a classroom teacher, instructional coach and online teacher. He has taught in many settings, from a comprehensive high school, to a 6th-12th grade Project Based Learning and STEM school. He has taught a variety of subjects from English and Social Studies to Technology and Game design through implementing small-scale to extensive integrated projects. Currently, Andrew is an Instructional Coach at the Shanghai America School in China with has a heavy focus on Understanding By Design(r), Assessment and Project Based Learning. He also serves on the faculty for ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development). He has supported educators in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Kuwait, India, China, Australia, and the Dominican Republic. Andrew is also the author of “Freedom to Fail” published with ASCD, and has contributed articles to ILA, ASCD, and Edutopia.

Dr. Angela Peery is an author and educator. She has authored or co-authored 13 books, including the bestsellers Writing Matters in Every Classroom and The Data Teams Experience: A Guide for Effective Meetings. In 2017, she will publish three books on vocabulary instruction.

Prior to becoming a consultant, Angela was an instructional coach for a chronically low-performing middle school. Her other experience includes ten years of classroom teaching, four years as a high school administrator, and leadership roles at the building, district, and state levels. In these roles, she developed curriculum and mentored other teachers in standards implementation. She also taught undergraduate and graduate courses, both in-person and online. Additionally, she was a co-director of a National Writing Project site for several years, teaching the summer institute.

Dr. Tony Burks’s career is defined by his culturally courageous leadership in support of today’s learners as leaders and innovators. THOUGHT LEADERAs the Chief Learning Officer of LEADright and a K-12 Education Expert, Dr. Burks’ ideas and insights center around thinking differently; taking different actions, and having different breakthrough results. Superintendent-in-ResidenceDr. Burks served the National Center for Urban School Transformation (NCUST) as its Superintendent-in-Residence. He has helped school districts and their partners transform schools into places where students achieve academic proficiency, love learning, and graduate well prepared to succeed.

ScholarA fellow of the British-American Project and a two-time recipient of the Joseph B. Whitehead Educator of Distinction Award (2003, 2006), Dr. Burks has earned three awards from the Fulbright Organization for his work in education: the Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program (1998), the Fulbright Educator Exchange with the Kingdom of Jordan (2004), and the Fulbright Administrator Exchange with the Kingdom of Thailand (2006). Dr. Burks earned a BA in Philosophy with Honors from Morehouse College, an MEd in Educational Leadership from Trevecca Nazarene University, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from The University of North Carolina Greensboro.

Author Dr. Burks is the author of three books and a contributor to two. His newest book, Bought Wisdom: Tales of Living and Learning, is an interactive leadership memoir that invites you to tell your own stories. Bought Wisdom shows learners and leaders how to use their stories to reframe and transform their lives for the benefit of themselves and others.

EducatorDr. Burks is an award-winning educator who developed an early drive for leading that resulted in him becoming an elementary school principal at the age of 27. Since then, he has served schools and districts in roles from Magnet Director to School Transformation Coach, from Principal Mentor to Executive Director of Small School Innovation, and from School Improvement Officer to Area Superintendent. Dr. Burks was the founding principal of The Early College at Guilford, North Carolina’s first early college high school and one of the first such schools of its type in the world.
