Crooked Creek Food Pantry Covenant Community Church will collect hygiene items for Crooked Creek Food Pantry during the season
of Lent. There will be a collection box in the church foyer. CCFP is a client choice food pantry that respects the personal dignity of each client. Eligible families and individuals can shop at CCFP once a
month for the items they need and prefer. In addition to food, families and individuals can select from a
variety of other necessities – such as soap, toothpaste, toilet tissue, and diapers – when
available. SNAP (formerly “food stamps”) cannot be used to purchase these items. Long-term goals of CCFP include providing nutritional information to help clients make healthier food choices and connecting them with educational opportunities and
programs that may assist them in moving out of the cycle of poverty.
Peace Center for Forgiveness & Reconciliation “The Center provides pathways to peace for young people, particularly African immigrants,
through its PEACE ACADEMY, a program that offers conflict resolution training, character
building and mentoring for caring adults. The Center also provides support and fosters
healing for young people who have experienced the pain of injustice or other traumatic events in their lives through its JOURNEY TO FREEDOM PROGRAM.”
Fast-a-Meal for a Cause What should I give up this Lent? Donate to the Lent Appeal. Giving something up for Lent is a Catholic tradition, but lots of
people use this self-denial as an opportunity to serve Christ, by raising money and helping people living in poverty too. A LENT
APPEAL (special collection) will be taken up on the first Sunday in April to be given to a selected community organization. Care
Partners will be asked to nominate an organization (501 C) of their choice to receive our sacrificial offering.
Personal Sp i r i tua l Growth Walk to Jerusalem: A Lenten Journey Beginning on Wednesday, February 26, 2020, our church community will “begin” a symbolic walk (12 million steps) that
begins at Covenant and “ends” in the Holy Land (Jerusalem). We encourage all Care Partners to embark on this mission to
become more physically active while also fostering emotional health and spiritual growth. Each registered Care Partner will
track his/her steps/miles for a set period of time and add them to the total, trying to walk to Jerusalem by Friday, April 10. We
will be divided into teams of men, women, and children led by Jenice & Larry Dunlap and Leslie & Brandon Woodson. More
detailed information will be provided in the Narthex on Sunday, February 16. BECOME MORE PHYSICALLY FIT &
SPIRITUALLY WHOLE BY EASTER!
Community Outreach
on the Lenten Journey
Make Your Way
at Covenant Community Church
Lent at Covenant begins on Ash Wednesday. We will gather in the sanctuary on February 26 at 12:00 p.m. and at 6:30 p.m. to
begin our Annual Lenten journey. With the imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday, we remember we are dust and to dust we shall
return. This act of repentance and remembrance will lead us through the wilderness to the cross and eventually to the empty grave
on Easter. Join the Covenant community on this Lenten journey.
Throughout the season of Lent, Pastor Wallace will be preaching on the theme, “BROKEN Made NEW “. We all know the nagging
feeling of a broken fingernail – it snags your clothing, scratches and irritates throughout the day. The scrawling fracture in your
windshield distorts your vision and keeps you from getting where you need to be. Brokenness hinders our lives. In small sort of
ways, a crack can be a nuisance; in big, everyday sort of ways, the brokenness in our lives can also leave us feeling broken into scattered pieces.
We all know what it’s like to feel fractured, torn apart, shattered. Though it is hard to face, and even harder to admit to others, we
have all been broken. We might try to hide these fissures, but this Lenten Season, we invite you to hear the stories, and to be
comforted by God’s experiences with brokenness. God knows the feeling of broken trust, bonds broken among our beloved friends
and family, even the disarray of shattered dreams.
As we journey through God’s brokenness, we discover the power of God’s resurrection found within what is broken. We discover
the hope God has for us, for the whole world to break free from the tomb, experience the promise of Easter - "made NEW!" We hope you will join us!

Lent Ash Wednesday February 26 | Imposition of Ashes @ 12:00 p.m.
Imposition of Ashes & Worship Service @ 6:30 p.m.
The first day of Lent is named Ash Wednesday. In nature many things have to wither and
decay and turn to ash before new life can spring forth. Early Christians held that before each
person can experience the new life of Easter Time, he/she has to let some of his/her faults and
bad habits die way and thus ‘turn to ash’. This first day of Lent reminds us that unless we are willing to die to our old selves, we cannot be raised to new life with Christ.
First Sunday of Lent March 1 @ 10:00 a.m. | Join us in welcoming Kizito D. Kalima in Worship
In April, 1994, Kizito D. Kalima, was hacked with a machete, left for dead in a pile of
bodies, then chased, imprisoned, tortured and finally, a chance to escape! Slim odds, but better to be shot than slowly cut to pieces by genocidaires. Leading a few others
and running as fast as his scarred teenage body could carry him, he found refuge deep
within the Nyanza swamps.
In July, 1994, after endless days and nights with the cries of Genocide of the Tutsi
echoing all around, as he was on the brink of starvation and madness, Rwanda was liberated. Stick-like and frightened, but not broken, he emerged from the dark morass. A
survivor. Kizito is Founder and Executive Director of the Peace Center for Forgiveness
and Reconciliation, a public speaker, and an advocate for Genocide Survivors. Kizito has
spoken at a variety of events, schools, churches, and community gatherings. He had the pleasure of sharing his story at the United Nations Headquarters in 1994.
Lent, the 40-day period of prayer, penance, and spiritual preparation for Easter, is a time to reflect on the meaning of being
joined to Christ in baptism. It is a time for Fasting, Prayer, and Almsgiving. Fasting: Fasting is an integral part of Lent. Traditionally, it has included reducing the amount of food we eat and abstaining from
meat. We fast to allow our physical hunger to remind us of our spiritual hunger, our need for God. The purpose of fasting is to
turn our attention to both God and others. Some things to fast from: watching television, foul language, snack or junk foods, spending money on entertainment, and gossiping.
Prayer: Prayer for a forgiving heart and ask the people you have hurt to forgive you. Say a prayer to God, giving thanks for the
blessings in your life. Pray for the children and families who are homeless; and think about ways to you and your family might help them.
Almsgiving (Acts of Charity): Show an act of kindness to each family member today. Show an act of kindness to a friend and to
someone who is difficult to like. Bring hygiene products to donate to Crooked Creek Food Pantry. Go through your closet and find
some clothes in good shape to give away to others who are in need. Skip a meal once a week and donate those funds to the
Lent Appeal Offering on Sunday, April 5.

Faith, Family, & Friends Sunday Sunday, March 15 @ 10:00 am.
As you embark on your Lenten journey, invite family,
friends, neighbors and co-workers to join us. In many
ways, the experience of brokenness is universal to all of us: broken bodies, broken hearts, broken relationships,
broken lives. Lent is a time when we take this
brokenness very seriously, recognizing that at its root is
our broken relationship with God.
Fellowship Hour Fasting As a church community we will be fast-
ing during Lent from sweets and des-
serts during the Fellowship Hour.

his team face an uncertain future when their
town's largest manufacturing plant shuts down
unexpectedly. As hundreds of people move away,
John reluctantly agrees to coach cross-country, a
sport he doesn't even like. His outlook soon
changes when he meets Hannah Scott, an
unlikely runner who pushes herself to the limit.
Inspired by the words and prayers of a new
friend, John starts to train Hannah for the biggest
race of her young life.”
A light meal will be served.
