THE ROAD TO EAST LAKEThe Illini are making their third consecutive appearance at the East Lake Cup this season as the event welcomes the semifinalist teams from the previous year’s NCAA Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships. Illinois has finished in the top five at the National Championship in six of the last seven years, and the Orange and Blue have made 10 consecutive appearances at the NCAA Championships. The Orange and Blue have advanced to the National Championship in 12 seasons under the direction of head coach Mike Small.

EAST LAKE CUP HISTORY The reigning East Lake Cup champions, Fighting Illini men’s golf has taken home the trophy at the last two East Lake Cup events. In 2015, the Illini pulled out a 3.5-1.5 win over Georgia in the final matchup of the day after earning a 4-1-0 victory over USC in the early morning hours. Illinois won the 2016 championship match 3-2 over the Oregon Ducks after earning a 3-2 victory over Texas in the semifinal round.

GOLF CHANNEL COVERAGEThe Golf Channel will provide pre-tournament, live and post-round coverage of the 2017 East Lake Cup. The live telecast will begin during Monday’s stroke play round and continue through Wednesday’s championship matches, airing from 2-5 p.m. CT and replaying in primetime. THE VENUE - EAST LAKE GOLF CLUBLocated in Atlanta, the East Lake Golf Club is the home course of legendary golfer Bobby Jones and is the oldest golf course in the city of Atlanta. The Club is not only historic, but philanthropic as well. Proceeds from operations support the East Lake Foundation, now serving as a national model for holistic community redevelopment across the country through Purpose Built Communities.

Over the years, East Lake Golf Club has hosted many national and regional champi-onships, including the 1950 U.S. Women’s Amateur, 1963 Ryder Cup, and 2001 U.S. Men’s Amateur. It is now the permanent home of the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola, the culminating event of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedEx Cup.

REGULAR SEASON REVIEWThe Illini earned four consecutive finishes among the top five to start the fall season, taking fifth place at the prestigious OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational before finishing in fifth at the Bearcat Invitational as well. The Orange and Blue pulled into third place overall at the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate and are coming off of a tie for sec-ond at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational. Senior Nick Hardy leads the squad with a stroke average of 70.58. He has placed among the top six in three of Illinois’ fall events. Senior Dylan Meyer earned the first individual title of the season for the Illini, firing an 11-under par total to lead Illinois at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational.

SUCCESS UNDER COACH SMALLHead coach Mike Small has been named Big Ten Coach of the Year nine times during his 16-year tenure as Illinois head coach, and earned Dave Williams National Coach of the Year honors in 2015. Along with his streak of five consecutive conference titles (2009-13), Illinois posted three consecutive runner-up finishes from 2002-04 and took third in 2008 with Small at the helm. Small has guided Illinois to eight of its 15 conference championship titles. Under Small’s direction the Illini won four con-secutive NCAA Regional Championships (2013-16), and have made 10 consecutive NCAA Regional appearances. Small’s squads have advanced to regionals 13 times and have made 12 appearances at the National Championships including each of the last 10 seasons (2008-17).

THIRD TIME’S THE CHARMFighting Illini men’s golf won its third consecutive Big Ten Championship title last season at Baltimore Country Club, closing the tournament with a team score 11-under par (829). The Illini finished 16 strokes ahead of runner-up Northwestern (+5) to earn the program’s eighth Big Ten title in the last nine seasons. The team score marks a new Big Ten Championships record, surpassing the previous record of 838 set by the Orange and Blue last season.

Then a junior, Dylan Meyer closed the tournament at 5-under par to earn individual medalist honors, becoming the seventh consecutive Illini to take medalist honors at the Big Ten Championships. Four Illini closed the tournament among the top 10 individually, while all five players finished among the top 25.

Head coach Mike Small has the unique distinction of winning one Big Ten Championship as a player (1988) and eight as a coach.

The Big Ten has not seen such consistency from a golf program since the 1980s as Ohio State was the last team to take home eight Big Ten Championship titles in nine years from 1982-1990.

#B1G INDIVIDUAL HISTORYOver the years, Illinois has seen 16 individuals take home 19 Big Ten Medalist hon-ors, including one in each of the past seven years. Junior Dylan Meyer won the 2017 Championships, while current European Tour member Thomas Detry took the title in 2016. Junior Nick Hardy won 2015 honors during his freshman campaign. Charlie Danielson split the title in 2014 after Luke Guthrie took the honors in 2011 and 2012, and Thomas Pieters won the tournament in 2013. Illinois is the only school in Big Ten history to have produced seven consecutive medalists. Only Michigan (1932-36), Purdue (1956-60) and Ohio State (1976-79) join Illinois in having a streak of five consecutive medalists.

USA, USA, USA!Junior golfer Nick Hardy was selected to represent the United States in the 2017 Arnold Palmer Cup last season, and helped Team USA reclaim the trophy. Hardy is the fifth Illini to appear on the prestigious list of participants in the Palmer Cup, joining Charlie Danielson, Thomas Detry, Thomas Pieters and Scott Langley. Hardy won both of his individual matches at the event, defeating Europe’s David Wicks, 5&4 and Harry Ellis, 3&2.

ILLINI MAKE NOISE IN PROFESSIONAL GOLFIllinois boasts several former players among the professional ranks, as Steve Stricker, D.A. Points, Thomas Pieters and Brian Campbell hold PGA Tour cards. Pieters and Thomas Detry are also members of the European Tour. Luke Guthrie and Scott Langley currently play on the Web.com Tour, and Charlie Danielson is working to earn status on the Mackenzie Tour. Thomas Pieters has seen success in the national spotlight as of late, earning a fourth place finish at The Masters after making his first appearance in the Ryder Cup and fin-ishing fourth at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Stricker recently made his debut on the PGA TOUR Champions, and served as Captain for the 2017 Presidents Cup.
