Opening Statement
• Throughout the ages the portrayal of men in art and design has evolved in many ways. One theme we have observed is the definition of masculinity as being portrayed through material success as opposed to strength.
Benin Culture
• “The figures usually stand feet apart in a commanding, aggressive stance, which imparts energy.” (Curnow, 128)
14th and 15th Century
• This figure shows the male as being physically fit. In this time period he would be able to provide for his family through hunting and fighting, not through financial wealth.

Closing Statement
• As you can see, throughout the centuries the depiction of men in art has evolved from initially portraying masculinity in the form of physical strength to now portraying it through power and social status.
