Favorite part of your job: Each daybrings new experiences, both chal-lenging and rewarding, which keepsme on my toes and excited to come towork. I have been very fortunate towork under great leadership whichhas allowed me to grow into this posi-tion. Early in my career my passionwas finance, which consisted prima-rily of recording and projecting busi-ness activity, but now I get to helpshape it. This is by far the mostrewarding role I have had yet.
Most challenging part of the job: Asin any business, we have both inter-nal and external customers. Our maingoal at MCR is to provide quality serv-ice to our external customers, ourguests. The challenge lies in creatingan environment where the internalcustomers, employees and vendors, believe and share that common goal.
Favorite on-the-job moment, cus-tomer or memory: Due to our
“Cheers” type of environment atMCR, many of our regular customersknow more than just our names; theyknow our hobbies, birthdays, favorite sports, etc. They know us asreal people and vice versa. When Itook a few days off last year I wasamazed that several customers actu-ally reached out to me by phone tomake sure that I was all right. While itmay seem like a small gesture, itmeant much more.
Education (high school, college):
Goshen High School, SUNY New Paltz- Bachelors in Business, Mount St.Mary - MBA
Favorite movie/Show: Wall Street,House of Cards
Favorite actor and/or actress:Robert DeNiro, Kevin Spacey
How do you spend your spare time:I find myself gravitating towards thewater one way or another, and whenpossible, with my 7-year-old nephew.Usually I’m fishing, but even whenthe fish have a different plan it’s still
nice to be out there.Favorite vacation spot: I had the
pleasure of traveling to Italy this pastsummer. We have all seen pictures ofRome, The Sistine Chapel and TheAmalfi Coast, but to stand thereknowing that everything around youis hundreds and sometimes thou-sands of years old is an incrediblefeeling.

John Wilcox is a jack of all trades at his job with the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Liberty.
STORY AND PHOTO BY WILLOW BAUM
Age: 45Hometown: Neversink, NYPlace of employment: New Hope
Community, Inc.Current title and duties: Director of
Admissions and Development.I am responsible for the admissions
process at New Hope Community. Imeet with individuals, and, often, their families, to determine if we canhelp them live the life they are seekingto live. I am fortunate that I get tomeet a lot of people and discuss theirhopes and dreams with them which isreally a privilege.
I also develop new homes for peo-ple with developmental disabilities. In collaboration with our team here atNHC, I locate suitable properties, secure the funding to purchase, andthen work directly with architects, general contractors, and decoratorsto deliver a beautiful home for peoplein need of residential services.
I also supervise a dedicated team ofadvocates, who work diligently onbehalf of the people that live at NewHope Community. They do reallygreat work here and I am lucky towork with them.
Years of experience: I have beenworking for people with Develop-mental Disabilities for 16 years.
Previous titles with your company:Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Pro-fessional, Quality Assurance Associ-ate, Senior QIDP, Director of QIDP.
Previous employment: I spent twoyears in the U.S. Army in the early90’s. I worked briefly in corporatebanking in Albany. I then started mycareer in Human Services at the Cen-ter for Discovery in 2000, moving toNew Hope Community in June of2005.
Favorite part of your job: I love wit-nessing the success of others.Whether it’s the people receivingservices at NHC or our staff, I lovewatching someone achieve theirgoals.
Most challenging part of the job:
Opening a new home is a massiveundertaking. Managing these typesof projects puts me in regular contactwith state and local officials, landowners, Realtors, attorneys, architects, contractors, decorators, inspectors, individuals, families, etc.… There are about a million actionpoints and deadlines to meet on eachone. Of course, that is an exaggera-tion, but it is a pretty complex processaffecting a lot of stakeholders.
However, when the project is doneand people move into their newhome, it is well worth it.
Favorite on-the-job moment, cus-tomer or memory: It is really difficultto name just one, but a very recenthighlight would be walking into abeautiful new home with a gentle-man that had been living in one of thelarge state-run institutions. By then, Ihad been working on all the details todeliver the home for over a year andhe turned to me and said: “This is anice home you have here, sir.” I saidback to him, “This is your home.”When I said this he broke out into thiswonderful smile. His brothers werewith him and they started to pat himon the back and congratulate him. That moment still makes me tear upwhen I think about it.
There have been a lot of momentslike that over the years. Most are justvery simple human moments; shar-ing a smile or bit of laughter withsomeone or being there to share atear when someone needed it. Thiswork can teach you what it means tobe human. It’s done that for me. Howmany people get to say that abouttheir job? I am really blessed that Ihave been afforded the opportunityto do this work.
Education: I graduated from Falls-burg High School and have a BA fromMarist College.
Favorite movie: One Flew Over theCuckoo’s Nest was a Great movie andthe book was even better.
Favorite actor and/or actress: I ammuch more interested in people Iknow than I am in celebrities. Howev-
er, I do appreciate great individualperformances like Nicholson in“Cuckoo’s Nest” or Kate Winslet in“The Reader,” which is anotherincredible film.
How do you spend your spare time:I have two young children, so my wifeand I spend a lot of time with themdoing the things they like. In a way, being a parent allows you to see theworld through a child’s eyes again andI really enjoy that.
Also, I love being out in the moun-tains, hiking or snowshoeing. I readquite a bit, write poetry and love allkinds of music.
Favorite vacation spot: I love visit-ing the national parks and have beento Acadia, Shenandoah, BryceCanyon, the Grand Canyon and Zion.
Family: My family is my world. My wife, Theresa, is a remarkable
lady, very bright, compassionate andthe love of my life.
My son, Joshua, is 12 years old andmy daughter, Marie, is 9. They areboth awesome kids, very smart, verykind and talented. They each havemade the world a more beautifulplace.
