When she’s not thinking or writing about art, Laura Gray Teekell enjoys running with her dog, Moose, on the trails and spinning at the downtown YMCA. She enjoys cooking, eating, drinking wine and preaching the benefits of Pilates. Laura Gray is excited about interviewing Fit Kids and is inspired by all the Memphians committed to healthy lifestyles!

Jenifer is a part-time writer and full-time mom to 3-year-old Madelyn. She enjoys yoga, mountain biking and swimming, and received her MA in Medical Anthropology from the University of Memphis. She enjoys living in Midtown and finds inspiration from the awesome people she meets through Memphis Health & Fitness.

Midtown makes the perfect place for Lori to raise her two girls and care for her over-needy husband. Lori’s professional talent is that of freelance graphic arts specialist. While she’s worked graphic magic on coupon books, direct mail – and of course, magazine layout – her true artist comes out in painting, BBQ Fest prop design and science fair projects.

As the Fleet Feet Sports running coach, Marcia is able to coach others to do her favorite thing- RUN! Marcia has had a passion for running since 4th grade and loves to promote the sport in any way possible. When not running, Marcia can be found biking, figuring out newlywed life, enjoying Shelby Farms with her dog, or doing anything outside in the sunshine!

Kristen is a freelance writer and public relations consultant for small local businesses. She has always been interested in learning about new programs and events and sharing opportunities with others. In her spare time, she prefers to be outdoors strolling with her husband and their one year old son, Barrett.

Sarah received her BFA in photography from the University of Memphis and now works as a freelance photographer and a technician for lensrentals.com. She spends much of her time in front of her computer editing, but her free time is devoted to trying every Sunday brunch Memphis has to offer.

Jen Russell is a freelance photographer and graphic designer. She is married to Will. They have two “fur babies” - a puppy named Barnabas and a kitty named Nevaeh. Jen loves taking Photo Finish race photos for H+F. Visit her website: lifeiscreative.weebly.com

Lisa Abbay, RD, LDN is the Regional Director of Morrison Healthcare Foodservices. She was recently awarded the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year for Tennessee for 2010.

When not beating the streets to promote health and fitness, Amy enjoys walking Midtown’s Green Line with her daughter Emma. Her favorite part of magazine publishing is sharing success stories with readers.

Hailey has been running over half her life- fortunately not from the law! She has run marathons and half-marathons in Dublin, NYC, LA, Anchorage, Seattle, Red Woods, Big Sur, New Orleans, Sylamore 25K, Shelby Farms 50K and Memphis (6 times). Trails are her new love along with interviewing Weekend Warriors with the same passion for fitness.

CAN YOU BEET THIS? BEET JUICE MAY HELP YOU LAST LONGER

running ChiC

Beetroot juice is already touted as a health tonic for enhancing sexual function and digestion, lowering blood pressure, sharpening brainpower, and increasing energy. Now research shows that beetroot juice may boost physical performance as well by significantly reducing the amount of oxygen required by the body during physical exertion.

In two studies involving 15 men, researchers at Exeter University found that cyclists who drank a half-quart of beetroot juice before beginning their workout were able to ride up to 20% longer than those who were given a placebo. Using a scanner which analyzes how much energy is needed for a muscle to contract, it was discovered that cyclists who drank beetroot juice prior to exercise used less oxygen than those who did not.

The bright colors and airy fabric will make you feel cool from the inside out! $84.

Know disco? You can help save a life if you do. If you see a teen or adult collapse, call 9-1-1 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of the classic disco song “Stayin’ Alive.”

Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States, with nearly 400,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occurring annually. And while the American Heart Association recommends conventional CPR with breaths and compressions in many case (such as for infants and children, victims of drowning, drug overdose or other respiratory problems, and adult victims who are found already unconscious and not breathing normally), administering Hands-Only CPR at the rate of 100 beats per minute can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival in the 80% of sudden cardiac arrests that happen in private or residential settings.

June 3-9 is National CPR & AED Awareness Week. The American Heart Association is working to increase the number of persons trained in CPR. If you have two hands, you have what it takes to help save a life. Take 60 seconds and visit www.handsonlycpr.org to watch a brief video, find a class in your area, or download the free Hands-Only CPR app for iPhone, Android, and Palm Pre phones.

More than 400,000 surgical cartilage repair procedures are performed in this country each year, with that number expected to rise due to an increasingly active aging population. OrthoMemphis is proud to announce that clinical investigators and orthopedists Drs. Randall Holcomb and Kenneth Weiss are the first surgeons in the city chosen to enroll patients in an investigational study of a new cartilage repair procedure for the knee.

The study is intended to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the Cartilage Autograft

Implantation System (CAIS) as compared to a standard surgical treatment called microfracture, in order to determine which procedure better reduces pain and improves function for individuals with damaged knee cartilage. During the one-time procedure, surgeons remove healthy cartilage from the patient’s knee and combine it with a unique absorbable material, creating a “bio-scaffold” for cell growth. This scaffold is then implanted at the site of cartilage damage.

“Most clinicians involved in cartilage regeneration research agree that the future lies in techniques that utilize cartilage cells on a bio-scaffold. This investigational study utilizes this type of advanced technology and we are hopeful that this technology will prove to be a valuable tool for our patients who have knee pain related to cartilage problems,” said Dr. Holcomb. Says Dr. Weiss, the study offers the opportunity to evaluate “whether the CAIS technology has the potential to provide greater benefit than microfracture for the repair of cartilage defects of the knee.”

Approximately 364 patients at up to 40 investigative sites throughout North America will be involved in the study, and their progress will be followed for four years. Those who are eligible for the trial include

individuals between 18 and 55 who have symptoms of knee pain, including swelling, fluid retention, catching, limited range of motion, or stiffness, as well as meeting all other inclusion and exclusion criteria.

for more information on this clinical trial, call 901. 259.1600 (ext. 1508), or visit www.orthomemphis.com.

Before Newsweek magazine’s recent characterization of Memphis as the fattest city in the nation, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee had already begun doing something about it. On March 10th, the healthcare company rolled out The Healthy Church Challenge, a 100-day weight loss competition encouraging congregations to lose weight. To date, nearly 1,000 participants from 50 churches have collectively lost more than 1,700 pounds.

At the end of the competition, monetary gift certificates will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place churches whose teams lose the greatest percentage of weight, while a $500 gift certificate will be awarded to the individual with the greatest overall weight loss. Men, women, and children of all ages, shapes, and sizes have taken the Challenge to work off the extra pounds, get in shape, and win prizes for their congregation and themselves.

“We’re at a critical juncture in West Tennessee where so many lives are being affected because of unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyles,” said Calvin Anderson, senior vice president and chief of staff at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee.

The Healthy Church Challenge will hold an Obesity Summit on Saturday, June 16th at the Holiday Inn University of Memphis. The finale takes place on June 17th at the Juneteenth Freedom and Heritage Festival in Douglass Park. Both events are free and open to the public.

HGH (human growth hormone) has been equated to “The Fountain of Youth.” Produced by the pituitary gland, it is responsible for the growth and maturation of the body during childhood and adolescence. In adulthood, it serves as a catalyst for bone and tissue repair. It has also been reported to strengthen bone structure, increase muscle mass, promote fat loss, and increase the body’s immune response.

An insufficient amount of HGH in the body can cause increased fat deposits (especially in the abdomen), lowered energy levels, skin problems, loss of strength, loss of muscle, and lowered libido. On the other hand, an overproduction of HGH, a very rare condition usually caused by a pituitary tumor, can also lead to a plethora of problems.

So how can you increase your HGH levels? There are several options available to you. Here are some tips:

get enough sleeP. The body produces HGH unevenly throughout the day. The most active production time is during sleep.

exerCise. The body produces an increased amount of both testosterone and HGH following intense resistance training. Weight training releases far greater amounts of these hormones than cardio alone.

eat a lower glyCemiC index diet. In general, the simpler the carbohydrate, the higher the blood sugar level, and the more insulin released by the body. Insulin is an inhibitor of HGH. Eating more complex carbohydrates is therefore crucial to HGH production.

eat a low-CarBohydrate, high-Protein snaCk Before Bedtime. Eating carbohydrates before going to sleep causes insulin levels to spike, which is counterproductive to HGH production. Eating protein, on the other hand, aids muscle synthesis during the night, when your HGH levels are at their highest.

Choose suPPlements wisely, and time their use aPProPriately. A multi-million dollar industry has been built around HGH supplements. Most supplements contain very little active ingredients, driven by marketing. Look for supplements that contain L-arginine, glutamine, ornithine, L-lysine, and GABA. Some evidence shows HGH inducing supplements work best when your body is already scheduled to produce HGH, so ingest your HGH to coincide with your exercise and sleep schedule.

There have been some controversial medical treatments for increasing HGH levels, such as direct

HGH therapy, which are now banned by the FDA. Currently, the administration of sermorelin, a

prescription chain of amino acids, has been shown to be effective at

stimulating HGH production, as well as safer and less expensive.

In runners, pain in the ball of the foot is commonly associated with overuse injuries. These joints and the soft tissue and tendons around them give you power when you push off of your foot to run. Injuries to this area include soft tissue and tendon inflammation, as well as stress fractures. Treatments include ice, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy. Orthotics (prescription insoles) can help to alleviate pressure from this

area. Make sure you wear good, supportive shoes and avoid running on concrete where shock absorption is minimal. If the injury is severe, it may be necessary to avoid weight-bearing exercises and to immobilize your foot and ankle with a cast boot for 2-4 weeks. Remember, if you have prolonged pain and swelling, the sooner you treat the injury, the sooner you’ll be up and running again!

A bunion is a bump of bone located on the inside of the great toe joint. Although they can be attributed to a number of causes, they are most commonly is linked to genetic factors, and are aggravated by improper shoes and certain activities. Unfortunately, because bunions are a structural problem, they will not go away on their own. Non-surgical treatments include wider shoes, anti-inflammatory medications, ice, and

custom orthotics. If these means fail and the bunion remains painful, you may need to consider surgical removal. The healing time in the majority of cases is approximately 4-6 weeks. In order to truly assess the downtime of this procedure, an x-ray is necessary. Afterwards, it will be necessary to wear a special shoe or cast boot for 2-4 weeks, then slowly transition into a tennis shoe before resuming your regular activities.

Summer is here, and that means more outdoor activities – cookouts, pool parties, biking, camping – but if you’re not careful, it can also mean a kidney stone.

Dehydration is one of the leading causes of this excruciatingly painful condition. And kidney stones are more prevalent in the summer since they are linked to water intake. Those warmer temperatures that make playing outside so inviting cause the body lose more water than normal, and many people either don’t drink enough fluids to compensate, or choose drinks such as beer, colas, and coffee, all of which are diuretics that may lead to dehydration.

The key to preventing kidney stones from forming is proper hydration. Try to drink at least three liters of water or another non-caffeinated beverage per day. During

extreme outdoor activities, drink enough to keep the urine clear to light yellow. However, drinking more water alone may not prevent kidney stones from forming. There are uncontrollable factors that increase the odds of kidney stones, including recurrent urinary tract infections, certain medical conditions, and a family history of stones. Even in these cases, though, drinking plenty of water may help avoid problems. People with recurrent kidney stones should have their risk factors evaluated by an urologist, since multiple stones can lead to serious complications.

Prema Healing

your Injury QuestIons answered

i am an avid runner with no Pain. however, when i go uP stairs sometimes my knee gives out. what is this?

This is a common complaint, especially among women. Often, they will complain of crunching and grinding in the front of their knee, especially while squatting, stooping, kneeling, or ascending and descending stairs.

Others say that prolonged sitting causes them to experience pressure or pain beneath the kneecap, while a few folks will even say that prolonged standing causes their knee to jump as if someone was kicking it from behind. These symptoms are often signs of Patellofemoral Stress Syndrome (PFSS), which is caused by an imbalance in the quadriceps muscles.

As long as you remain pain-free, the condition should not interfere with your normal activities. If it becomes painful, this needs to be addressed. PFSS is usually treated non-surgically through a variety of means, including exercises that strengthen the muscles that pull the kneecap inward, improve hamstring flexibility, and increase core strength. Often the foot must be evaluated as well. This can be an irritating condition, but there are many effective treatments to eliminate it and get you back to pain-free running, or if you are already pain-free, to eliminate progression of the syndrome.

i have always heard stretChing Prevents injury, But now i have Been reading that strength training is more imPortant for injury Prevention. whiCh one is it?

Our bodies are amazing machines, designed to be in perfect balance. Although there is quite a bit of “forgiveness” if we are tighter, looser, or weaker than we should be, most of us have areas we can improve on. For example, if your muscles are too tight, there may be repercussions, such as pain in the knees or lower back Conversely, being too loose carries its own set of problems. Athletes with loose joints often excel (baseball

pitchers and gymnasts are good examples). However, excessive laxity in the joints can be painful as well.

The bottom line: both strength and flexibility are important. If you are experiencing pain, one of the first areas that should be evaluated is your muscle balance. Maintaining your body’s equilibrium will result in more enjoyment of the activities you love!

June’s Fit Kid is Avery Brooks Whitehead, a rising 8th grader at St. George’s Independent School, where she competes in both soccer and lacrosse. She also plays both sports competitively outside of school.

how long have you Been involved in sPorts? When I was about 15 months old, I started gymnastics. I continued on into competitive gymnastics until around age 10. I started playing soccer around the age of 5. I have always enjoyed participating in sports. I have a very competitive nature which has led me to continue and love sports.

what sPorts are you involved with Currently, and what is your sChedule like? This past school year, I played middle school soccer, competitive soccer for Purple Rain Soccer Club, middle school lacrosse, and competitive lacrosse for Team Stickhead. I currently play competitive soccer year-round. Lacrosse is a spring sport for the school, but Team Stickhead plays tournaments over the summer and fall.

how do you BalanCe the two sPorts with your sChool work and after-sChool fun? I try to remain calm and focused and not get overwhelmed juggling everything. For school work, I use my time wisely at school, like in study hall. I may sometimes have to miss a birthday party or sleepover, but I still feel like I get plenty of time with my friends. Some of my best friends are on my competitive soccer team, so when we travel to tournaments out of town, we really have a lot of fun.

how do you stay in shaPe for these sPorts outside of PraCtiCe? My school gives me lots of opportunities to be involved in service. One way is participating in a 5K to raise money for charities. I try to run in several of these in the school year. My soccer coach, Mike Van Cleave, gives us workouts to do at home over the summer and winter break. These involve sit-ups, crunches, planks, push-ups, and running on our own. Over the summer, I usually do one week-long soccer camp as well as a lacrosse camp.

do you Prefer to ComPete indoors or outdoors? I personally like outdoor sports better. The year I played basketball, I learned that grass is not as hard on my body as a basketball court. I sprained my left ankle and broke my right foot in one basketball season.

do you have a sPeCifiC diet that you follow? are there foods that you stay away from? In preparing for a tournament, I try to drink more water and avoid sodas. I try to eat small meals or a snack before games. Breakfast before a tournament game may be fruit or a breakfast bar. I try to stay away from dairy products and any greasy food.

what qualities do you Believe an athlete should Possess? Many things that make a great athlete are good sportsmanship, a positive attitude, determination to get better, and mental toughness. Commitment to work hard at every practice makes you a stronger competitor.

what are your Personal athletiC goals? For lacrosse, I really try to be a leader for my team. This year I really improved on my offensive skills, which was one of my goals. For soccer, I play sweeper, which is the leader of the defense. I am trying to strengthen my communication skills with the defense during games.

what does it mean to you to Be a “good sPort”? Being a good sport has a lot to do with your attitude. Making sure you have a positive attitude towards your teammates as well as the other team is very important. I try to always say positive things to all players and not try to be mean or hurtful. I always try to have concern for any injured player, if it is my team or the other. I always thank the officials and players of the other team no matter the outcome of the game.

do you have any adviCe for others who want to follow in your footstePs as a multi-sPort athlete? If you can play several sports and challenge yourself academically and still have fun, then do it! Don’t get stressed about things because it only makes it harder. Also, if you are playing multiple sports, you need to take care of your body, rest when you can, and drink a ton of water! Sports have given me the opportunity to meet lots of new people and make life-long friends. Being involved in many sports has really made a positive impact on my life.

Profession: Teacher, Central High School

suBjeCts: 11th and 12th grade AP Psychology, Honors Psychology, and Psychology

sPorts: Assistant Coach, Boys Varsity Soccer, District 16 AAA Runners-up

Proudest teaChing moment: In 2009, my AP Psychology students were given an award from the AP College Board for making the highest gains nationally among African-American students. Central also has the highest AP Psychology scores in the district.

Best thing aBout your sChool: I love how much our principal Greg McCullough cares about the school, its students, teachers, parents, and staff. Central has some of the top teachers in the district. I love the school pride and the Warrior spirit. It is THE high school in Memphis ... what’s not to love?

student athletes or athletiC students? Both. Last year, the captain of the soccer team, Will Vaughn, was also the Valedictorian for CHS. Five players are members of the National Honor Society. Academics comes first, they work hard on and off the field. As a team we have tutoring sessions after school. Many of the boys are English Language learners, meaning they are in the process of learning English in high school. It is not an easy task. I have used my planning period many times to work with the boys or their individual teachers.

males vs. females: I see no difference between coaching females and males. At the end of the day I’m coaching soccer players, individuals that love the game and are learning skills and techniques. There are times when I do take on the mom role … I cheer them on, encourage them, scold them when needed, and feed them. (It takes about 15 large pizzas to feed 23 boys!) I make sure they have what they need to be successful on and off the field.

most fun on the field: I take an active role as a coach. I run warm-up laps with them, I stretch with them; when running a drill, I may be the defender or forward they are up against; I have even stepped in as the goalie at practice. I would never ask any of my players to do anything I was not willing to do myself. I have the scars to prove it.

most fun off the field: I rollerblade, run, and wakeboard. I hike and work out in the gym (P90X). This summer, I will be playing on a coed soccer team. I like live music. My two favorite venues are Minglewood Hall and the Shell.

keePing fit for the Classroom: I’m attending the AP Psychology reading in June (The AP reading is where selected teachers from all over the nation read and grade the Free Response Essays); I’m attending a conference at Princeton in July; I will be reading new research within the field of social studies for my dissertation.

one wish: I would love to have a permanent home practice field that was just for soccer.

In today’s tight job market, staying competitive often calls for a more youthful appearance. While traditionally used by women, non-surgical aesthetic procedures are beginning to increase in popularity with men as well.

Non-surgical approaches can address a variety of skin problems, including issues related to sun damage (such as pigmentation, broken capillaries, and wrinkles), and the scarring that results from acne or trauma. While surgery may be the only option for some men, Germantown Aesthetics offers an “Airbrush Facelift” that uses multiple techniques to improve the client’s appearance. This customized approach often includes Botox, laser treatments, and the use of volumizers such as dermal fillers.

Botox, the most widely used injectable, is an integral part of non-surgical facelifts, especially for men. Furrowed brows are common, as well as deep creases between the eyebrows, both of which give men a harsh, unpleasant, and older appearance. Botox acts by relaxing those muscles that create the wrinkles.

While some fillers last up to two years, most men are opting for a longer-lasting solution that still achieves natural-looking results. One such option is FDA-approved Artefill, which lasts 10 or more years by encouraging collagen growth in the skin itself, thereby eliminating the need for frequent visits to the doctor for refilling (an appealing feature for busy professionals).

While achieving the desired appearance is important, client comfort and safety are top priorities. The methods of anesthesia now employed

are safer than ever and help to make the procedure a comfortable one. Topical anesthetics are used for patients who undergo regular treatments.

Most men appreciate the rapid recovery time that follows the procedure. Clients are able to resume their normal activities within one to seven days, sporting fresher-looking skin with fewer lines and a more “rested” appearance.

The results of any non-surgical aesthetic procedure must be maintained through excellent skin care. An anti-aging regimen is therefore customized for each client; afterwards, periodic touch-ups of dermal fillers and Botox help to ensure a continued healthy, youthful appearance.

Saveyour skin.Advanced Dermatology provides to its patients an eco-friendly, state-of-the-art dermatology facility where patient comfort is always a priority. ADSCA will conduct a thorough skin evaluation and analysis using the most up-to- date technology combined with years of clinical expertise. All cosmetic procedures performed by MD.

Rolling on the RiveR:LocaLs PaddLe with the Pros

story by Laura Gray Teekell, photo by Roger Cotton

Now in its 31st year, the Outdoors, Inc. Canoe and Kayak Race is a grand celebration of the mighty Mississippi – the Mt. Everest of rivers, the father of all waters, the river that makes Memphis…well…Memphis.

For over a quarter of a century, Outdoors, Inc. has been helping folks paddle the Mississippi for excitement and adventure, while instilling in them an appreciation of the river itself. According to Joe Royer, President and co-owner of Outdoors, Inc. and director for the Canoe and Kayak Race, that is precisely their mission – “outfitting human-powered recreation,” and celebrating Memphis’ greatest resource in the process.

A long list of notable paddlers will be converging on the river this month, hoping to upset Olympic Gold Medallist and 5-time Canoe and Kayak Race champion Greg Barton, and break his course completion record of 16 minutes and 44 seconds. Royer acknowledges the stiff competition Barton, a superstar in the paddling world, will face due to the depth of big-name talent competing this year. In addition to attracting world-class competitors, the race will also celebrate the 30th anniversary of Mud Island River Park, with proceeds to benefit the Church Health Center.

Not only has Outdoors, Inc. worked hard over the years to promote the involvement of elite paddlers in its Canoe and Kayak Race, they have also encouraged hometown paddlers to join in. Their efforts have paid off – this year over 500 contestants from all over the world, both professional and amateur, will be competing in the legendary race. Support will be provided by Outdoors, Inc. staffers and volunteers from the Bluff City Canoe Club and the Memphis Whitewater Kayak Club. In addition, the Memphis Yacht Club will be operating 12 boats to ensure the safety of competitors.

Following the race and awards ceremony (to be held at Jefferson Davis Park), contestants will assist with clean-up; leaving the park cleaner than they found it is something that the race organizers take very seriously. And, after all else is said and done, it’s time for another event that everyone can agree is also serious business – the after-party, with live music from the Bluff City Backsliders.

The Mississippi River is as beautiful and challenging as any other extreme sports destination in the world. Taking it on requires not only sheer bravery, but advanced technical skill, sound judgment, and strategic thinking as well. For some elite paddlers, winning the Outdoors Inc. Canoe and Kayak Race is an opportunity to earn a coveted title. For others, it’s a chance to have a thrilling experience on the river with partners, friends, or family. Says Joe Royer, “It’s about respecting the river, and when you have the skills to paddle it, it’s an awesome thing to behold.”

the 31st annual outdoors, inc. Canoe and Kayak Race will be held Saturday,

June 16th. Start time is 10:15 a.m. at the mouth of the Wolf River. Free Spectator viewing. For registration information, visit www.outdoorsinc.com. not ready

what exactly is it about kayaking the mississippi river that makes it amazing? ask greg barton, two-time olympic Kayaking gold medallist and engineer and president of epic Kayaks, Inc., makers of high-performance kayaks. greg is a true international figure in the sport, with a list of accomplishments that is literally growing as we speak. while h+f was attempting to track greg down for an interview, he was busy racing in the world championship sea Kayak race – a win that is coveted by many watermen. the race begins near the west end of the island of molokai, hawaii, crosses the volatile Ka’iwi channel, considered one of the roughest ocean channels in the world, and finishes at hawaii Kai on oahu.

not surprisingly, greg and his partner, Zsolt svadovszki, won the race with the fastest boat overall, while his business partner and fellow team epic member oscar chalupsky stunned the field with his 12th victory at the race, taking the singles title. greg has competed in canoe and kayak races on the international stage since the 1980s, taking him around the world – and yet he has been coming to memphis for the

past 5 years to race on the mississippi. when h+f finally did catch up with greg, we found out what keeps the world champion coming back to compete each year (and also where he likes to have his pre- and post-race meals). here’s what he had to say:

what keePs you Coming BaCk to ComPete in the outdoors, inC. Canoe and kayak raCe? It’s a fun event because it’s held on the mighty mississippi river. the race is challenging; working with the current and potentially some wind. the fast current makes it the world’s fastest 5K race. I keep coming back because it is so well organized and has top notch competition. the race draws competitors from several states and sometimes from overseas. the finish line festivities are fun with live music. I’m hoping to win the race again this year! training is going well. I just returned from hawaii, winning the doubles class in the molokai championship surf-ski race.

what are your hoPes for the future of these sPorts in memPhis? I’d like to see the sports of canoeing & kayaking continue

to grow and for more people to paddle on the mississippi. It’s a great resource for memphis and more people should get out on the river!

do you have any favorite PlaCes to eat or visit while you are here? I like to eat at tsunami the day before the race. then after the race go to ernestine & hazel for cheeseburgers and live music. amy lavere was playing the last few times I went. and of course the rendezvous has world class bbQ.

Whether you’re walking, jogging, or running, it’s important to find the proper shoe for your unique gait. You should be comfortable, but your shoe must also provide you with the proper amount of support in order to help avoid injuries and discomfort. You may have heard the terms overpronation and supination, but what do these terms really mean – and how can choosing the right shoes help correct these issues?

neutral Pronation First, let’s talk about neutral pronation. Considered the most efficient type of gait, neutral runners keep their foot in a stable position throughout the heel strike and toe off, without excessive rolling or collapsing of the arch. A neutral runner should therefore wear a “neutral” shoe, which allows the foot to move naturally without trying to stabilize it.

overPronation The vast majority of runners and walkers overpronate to some degree. Overpronation occurs when the foot rolls in excessively, collapsing toward the arch. Therefore, a runner who overpronates needs a shoe that provides stability using a stronger, more rigid material at the inside sole and arch of the shoe. This stabilizing material is available in varying degrees, and allows the foot to try to a more stable gait in order to correct the overpronation. These shoes are also more durable, with a longer lifespan.

suPination The least common type of gait is that of supination (also called underpronation). Supination occurs when the foot does not roll in toward the arch (pronate) enough. Runners or walkers who underpronate should wear very flexible, neutral shoes to allow as much movement of the foot as possible.

analyzing your gait Before beginning any walking or running regimen, you should consult a store that specializes in running equipment to have your gait analyzed. There, professionals can help you choose the correct shoe for your individual stride by having you run or walk on pavement or a treadmill while observing your feet in motion. This allows them to recommend the shoes that best compliment your unique feet.

weekend warrior Claim to fame: I recently completed my third Boston Marathon. The 116th Boston Marathon had the distinction of being the hottest Boston Marathon on record. The temperatures rose to 90 degrees. It was brutal. I decided at the start to make the best of the terrible conditions, and to just have fun. It was an amazing experience, even though I finished a full 30 minutes slower than last year. I also participated in the Knoxville Half Marathon in March. I decided to test out the new Megabus service from Memphis to Knoxville. The trip to Knoxville was great, but the trip back was eventful as Megabus left me in Nashville. I was still in my race clothes, and my luggage was on the bus. I had to find a way back to Memphis. Really funny story.

favorite fitness aCComPlishment: I won the 2011 Clarksville Half Marathon last October with a personal best time of 1:36:34.

AsiAn OrzO sAlAd ingredients — 8 oz. orzo pasta — 1 red bell pepper (cut in small dice) — 1 yellow bell pepper (cut in small dice) — 2 ribs celery (cut in small dice) — 1/2 red onion (cut in small dice) — 2/3 cup sliced almonds — 1 11 oz. can mandarin oranges

(drained/optional) — 4 oz. (1/2 jar) Annie’s Naturals

Shitake Sesame Dressing

direCtionsBoil pasta according to package directions.

While the pasta boils, mix vegetables and oranges together in a large bowl.

Drain the pasta well and rinse with cold water.

Add pasta and dressing to the vegetables; mix well.

Serve Chilled.

I have a confession to make: I’ve been busy lately. Okay, so that isn’t the confession. That is my attempt to offer an excuse before the confession. The truth is that I’ve been busy, and I’ve allowed my diet to suffer. Trying to stay active athletically (I’m a skateboarder and distance longboarder) while balancing a full-time job, various writing projects, and quality time with my son has – unfortunately – taken its toll on my waistline.

So I’ve resumed meal planning, primarily by making larger batches of food when I cook and portioning them into meal-size servings. When you know that delicious, fresh food is already waiting at home, you are much less likely to make a quick-fix stop at the drive-thru.

This Asian pasta salad is perfect for portioning and keeping in the fridge, and by using a jarred (but natural) dressing you’ll save on time and dishes. The mandarin oranges are optional since most are canned in syrup, but with a bit of searching, you can find those stored in their natural juices. I think it’s worth it, due to the flavor and texture they add to the salad.

Be a Flexitarianwhat is a flexitarian? Many people who are re-thinking their diet believe that in order to be healthy, they must adhere to a strict vegetarian diet, but that is not always the case. There is a new buzzword in the world of nutrition – flexitarianism. A flexitarian is anyone who actively incorporates meatless meals into his or her diet, yet allows for the occasional consumption of meat.

By making one simple, painless dietary change – eating one meatless meal a week – you can not only make an impact on your health, but the environment as well. It’s as easy as that!

why should you Consider BeComing a flexitarian? • Eating a plant-based diet that focuses on fresh fruits and vegetables

decreases your chances of getting heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers, while decreasing your risk of having a stroke. In addition, those who restrict their consumption of animal products are less likely to be overweight or obese than those who do not.

• Poor eating habits are costing too much for too many. Studies have shown that people with healthy eating habits are more productive and have lower medical costs, fewer workers’ compensation claims, and fewer sick days.

• To become a flexitarian, you can still eat meat, poultry and fish in moderation as part of a plant-based diet. It could be just the jump-start you need to begin eating healthier.

get started • Plan menus that feature entrees you like and that are typically

meatless, such as veggie lasagna, minestrone soup, and pasta salad. If you need a snack, try a handful of nuts and some fresh fruit.

• Begin by going meatless only one or two days a week. On those days, try the following protein-rich foods instead of meat: beans and legumes (great in casseroles and salads); vegetarian refried beans (a good substitute for meat in burritos and tacos); tofu (an excellent addition to stir-fry dishes); and Black Bean Burgers or Original Turkey Burgers (when you’ve just gotta have a burger).
