Why RAN Optimization?

Still today, often more than 50% of RAN’s core transmission capacity is reserved for 2G Abis/Ater voice traffic

Wasted bandwidth: Transmission resources are dedicated per cellular service (2G, 3G, HSPA) and per site

Huge Inefficiency: 2G TDM static resource allocation, 3G protocol overhead (ATM, RLC)

Optimization enables 100% dynamic transmission resource sharing

Reduces amount of bandwidth required for 2G traffic by 3x or 4x while making such bandwidth resource available for 3G & HSPA

Comtech EF Data Proprietary

Abis/Ater Optimization Technology

• Up to 2:1 Bandwidth reduction on Abis traffic payload • Less than 10kb/s per call (FR) compared to 26-36 Kbps BTS-IP / IP-RAN

(+ToP overhead) and 18 Kbps BTS-IP / TDM-RAN with IP HC

Benefits of Abis Optimization (1)

Cell sites aggregation

2G Abis optimized bandwidth is traffic load (Erlang) dependant

Allow for traffic aggregation between cell sites IN THE RAN (not possible with PWE)

2G RAN capacity can be now dimensioned based on Erlang instead of E1s

Additional 30% to 50% bandwidth gain 3:1 to 4:1 Ratio

Benefits of Abis Optimization (1)

Actual measured results

8 E1(16Mbps) Abis input

Total output bandwidth <4Mbps (4:1 optimization/ aggregation savings at peak) with no drop in KPI

Page 15: Memotec CX-UA Product Overview June 2012_1

Comtech EF Data Proprietary

Multi- service Traffic Aggregation

2G, 3G, HSPA, CDMA, WiMAX

Dynamic bandwidth allocation between the different services and wireless technologies.

User traffic Migration between 2G and 3G

Peak hour is different for Voice & Data Services

When no calls, all bandwidth available for data traffic

Statistic multiplexing efficiency increases with number of voice channel

Benefits of Abis Optimization (2)

Traffic protection and enhanced availability

Degraded weather conditions: high capacity MW links may often go down

ACM may help protect link through downgrading to lower modulation and improve link sensitivity

but at the cost of reducing bandwidth and not having enough capacity for 2G traffic BTS will drop-off the network

Abis optimization + bandwidth management enables protecting 2G traffic and keep min. capacity for 3G + HSUPA traffic
