In psychology, memory is an organism's mentalability to store, retain and recall information.

From an information processing there are three main stages in the formation and retrieval of memory:

• Encoding or registration (receiving, processing and combining of received information)

• Storage (creation of a permanent record of the encoded information)

• Retrieval or recall (calling back the stored information in response to some cue for use in a process or activity)

short- term memory -can recall something from several seconds without rehearsal. The store of short term memory was 7±2 items. dependent on regions of the frontal lobe and the parietal lobe.

long-term memory can store much larger

quantities of information for potentially unlimited

duration (sometimes a whole life span).

Hippocampus is essential (for learning new

information) to the consolidation of information

from short-term to long-term memory

Ben Pridmore - World Memory Champion

2008. He can memorise the order of a pack

of cards in 30 seconds.

• Dr. Gunther Karsten -World Memory

Champion 2007.

Johannes Mallow memorize 405 numbers in 5 minutes and 81 words in 5 minutes.

According to some researchers woman are slightly better at remembering the locations of objects in artificial scenes.

Which animals have the best memory?

Sea lion have the best memory. A sea lion in

America has stunned people by still remembering

how to do a trick 10 years after it was taught. This

is followed by elephant, gorillas, dolphins and pigs.

Goldfish have the worst memory.

Way’s to improve our memory

1. Drink in Moderation

- There's evidence that light to moderate alcohol consumption can improve memory and cognition.

2. Seek Treatment for Depression

- Depression causes an increase of cortisol levels. The increased cortisol diminishes certain brain areas. Thus, affected people tend to be forgetful.

3. Get Moving

- Brain depends on energy received through a constant intake of oxygen and nutrients from the bloodstream. So to keep the blood moving to the brain, you nees to exercise. Besides, One study found that chewing gum will supply the brain with enough oxygen to help memorize items simply because of the muscle movement.

4. Visualization and Association- Turning a list of random words into images

may help you remember the words better.

A picture's worth a thousand words

0011 0010 1010 1101 0001 0100 10115. Chunking- Chunking puts a large amount of information into

more manageable chunks so that you have less to remember. For example, if presented with the string: FBIPHDTWAIBM.

People are able to remember only a few items. However, if the same information is presented in the following way:

• FBI PHD TWA IBM

It would be easier to remember

0011 0010 1010 1101 0001 0100 10116. Method of Loci- In using the method of loci, you're essentially

piggybacking the information you need to remember on top of information that would be near impossible for you to forget.

8. Visual images

- A rose to remember “Rosie.” Use positive, pleasant images, because the brain often blocks out unpleasant ones, and make them vivid, colorful, and three-dimensional they’ll be easier to remember.

Food that can improve memory

• B vitamins, especially B6, B12, and folic acid. This protects neurons from breaking down.

- Best sources: Broccoli, asparagus, strawberries, melons, black beans citrus fruits and soybeans.

0011 0010 1010 1101 0001 0100 1011• Antioxidants like vitamins C and E, and beta

carotene, fight free radicals, which are atoms formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Free radicals are highly reactive and can damage cells, but antioxidants can interact with them safely and neutralize them.

- Best sources: blueberries, sweet potatoes, red tomatoes, spinach, broccoli, green tea, nuts, and liver.

• Omega-3 fatty acids are count as “healthy” fats, as opposed to saturated fats and trans fats, protecting against inflammation and high cholesterol.

- Best sources: salmon, herring, tuna, halibut, and mackerel and walnuts.

Folic acid can also help your memory.

- Best sources :fortified whole-grain breakfast cereals, lentils, black-eyed peas, soybeans, spinach, green peas, broccoli, wheat germ, and oranges.

Classical music could improve memory!

Song written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart seemed to have " The Mozart Effect" in which listeners memory starts to improve.

- In a spatial reasoning test (from the Stanford-Binet intelligence scale). Results had showed that the students' scores improved after listening to the Mozart tape compared to either the relaxation tape or silence.
