I’d like the memory of me

to be a happy one.

I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles

when life is done.

I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways,

of happy times and laughing times

OBITUARY

Marietta Barrett Covington was born September 16, 1955 in Monroe, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Clayton Barrett, Sr. and Mary Chambers Barrett. As a beloved sister, aunt and friend she departed this earthly life on Friday, August 16, 2019 in Irvington, New Jersey.

Marietta accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was bap-tized at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. As a teen she served as a member of Jr. Usher Board, Jr. Choir, and Secre-tary of the Sunday School Department. Marietta was a mem-ber of the Christian Love Baptist Church in Irvington, New Jersey.

Marietta graduated from Monroe High School in 1973. She graduated from North Carolina Central University and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Admin-istration. She also became a member of the Alpha Lambda

Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. in the spring of 1975. Marietta served as the Dean of Pledgees for the 1975 Fall initiates.

Her professional career began with Wachovia Bank in Charlotte, NC, in the Collections De-partment repossessing vehicles in the sur-rounding area and counties (this clearly re-

quired tremendous confidence and courage!). Later she served as a Personal Banker for several years. After relocating to New Jersey, she remained in the bank-ing industry. She then accepted an opportunity with FedEx in the City of Newark as supervisor.

Marietta was preceded in death by her mother, father, one brother Clayton Barrett, Jr. and two sisters; Venice Barrett Dun-ham, and Betty Barrett Mangrum. She leaves to cherish fond memories with her sisters; Mrs. Dorothy Barrett Wynn (Willie), Mrs. Linda Barrett Henderson. One aunt, Mrs. Cauthen Hou-

ston, four nieces, seven nephews, twelve great nieces, ten great nephews, one great-great niece, five great-great nephews and host of other relatives and friends.
