T hroughout the past twenty-four years,
the Chaplaincy has promised the
community to be there every time we
are called, and our ministry has become
invaluable to the First Responder community
and the citizens. Our ministry began with an
idea from our senior chaplain, the Rev. Rob
Dewey to have a chaplaincy for the police
department in order to better serve the
officers and the community. The small idea
for a police chaplaincy has grown into a
ministry with nearly twenty volunteer
Chaplains; a team of laypeople who help
follow up with victims of crises, a board of
Directors, a staff, and a loyal group of
financialsupporters.
It is easy to see our First Responders as
people who go to work and do their jobs just
like the rest of us, that is, until you get to
know them. Office Manager for the
Chaplaincy, Gloria Fann, stated, “When I
first learned of the Chaplaincy, I saw a
glimpse of what First Responders must see
on a daily basis. It is frightening. We
minister to those who see these crises once
in a lifetime, things that no one should ever
have to process or handle. We then minister
to the first responders who have to see it
every day. They don’t just go to work; they
serve.”
This group of Judeo-Christian volunteer
chaplains reaches out to an ever growing
number of victims of crises with a calming,
trusted ‘Ministry of Presence’. Our ministry continues with the loyal support
of congregations, business and individuals. Chaplain Dewey stated, “It has been a
joy to serve for the past twenty four years and we look forward to continuing on
with the mission God has given us for this community.”

Annual Oyster Roast and Silent Auction The Chaplaincy’s held its
annual Oyster Roast and
Silent Auction on January
18 at the Charleston Crab
House. The evening was a
great success and we were
able to raise approximately
$14,000 with the help of our
sponsors, South
Carolina Federal Credit
Union and The Children’s
Cancer Corporative!
The Oyster Roast was
attended by over 100 guests
and was filled with laughter
and good times. We were
able to recognize some of
our fantastic volunteers
that add so much to our
ministry such as our
Chaplain of the Year, Spike
Coleman of St. Andrews
Presbyterian Church and
Rookie of the Year,
Chaplain Mark Hunt of
Rockville Presbyterian
Church. We also awarded
Citizen of the Year to North
Charleston Fire Chief Greg
Bulanow, and Business of
the Year to the
Charleston Crab
House. Our
Survivor Follow
Up team mem-
ber of the year
was awarded to
Herbert and
Christine Hill for their
continued support of the
Chaplaincy. Between our
volunteers and donors the
Chaplaincy can continue on
with the ministry God has
set before us.

Chaplain Jesse Jennings has been a
chaplain since October 2011 and has
done an outstanding job with the
Chaplaincy. He has connected with
the First Responder community and
is well respected by all he has
served. He is a retired US
Army Warrant officer of 22
years and a Desert Shield/
Storm Veteran. Chaplain
Jennings stated that “being
able to exercise and use my
God gifted ability to assist the
needy, help in healing the bro-
ken hearted, and provide com-
fort when needed” was why he
become a chaplain. One
memorable call Chaplain
Jennings recalled was his
first suicide call. He learned
“that the outside of an
individual may be deceiving, it's
what's on the inside that we must be
more attentive to and have a discern-
ing spirit.” Chaplain Jennings is a
blessing to all and we are blessed to
have him be a part of the Chaplaincy.

3 Degree Guarantee! During the month of February, the Chaplaincy
was the featured charity for News 2’s “3 Degree
Guarantee”. Every time the actual high tempera-
ture is within 3 degrees of the forecast, Glasspro
donates at least one hundred dollars to a local
non-profit organization. Thanks to Rob Fowler’s
great forecasts, Glasspro was able to award the
Chaplaincy with a check of $2,100 during the
March 7th broadcast. A big thanks goes out to
Glasspro and News 2 for making this happen!

exchange of ideas and information
among those who provide crisis and
disaster mental health services.

forum, presenting to
those working in the

topics included Pastoral
Crisis Invention and a

To the Chaplains and Staff of
Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy,
Your mission is invaluable to this
community and truly makes a dif-
ference. Thank you for your min-
istry when you were able to talk
my friend out of suicide and for
offering a calming presence.
Blessings,
Matthew Fann
Chaplain Rob Dewey brings a
message of God's mercy, grace
and love to the interstates,
highways, back roads, bridges,
hospitals and homes. He travels
near and far wherever the call to
friend and strangers. He offers
words of hope or condolences,
prayers of truth and much needed
comfort. Beyond his prayers for
those of us whose lives he has
touched with the heart of God,
he prays daily that the Coastal
Crisis Chaplaincy will be a
continuing service to those in
need of comfort and support.
He is my hero, as I know him to
be to many.

Dear members of the
Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy,
I would like to take a moment to thank you
all for your dedication to emergency service
members and citizens of Charleston County
and North Charleston specifically. It has
been a blessing to work with the chaplain
volunteers who give of their hearts, time
and faith to help support us during difficult
times. I have had ample opportunity to
work with various members of your
ministry of presence. I know that there are
times when I do not have the opportunity to
let them know, on scene, how wonderful I
think they are. They come out day and
night, good weather and bad to serve those
of us affected by crisis. All we have to do
is call. It is comforting to have them with
us on scenes no matter what the
circumstance. Thank you for your ministry
and the gifts of you time and talents in ser-
vice to my department and the citizens of
my community.
