The draft audit process and audit protocols were piloted on the ground in January and are now being used routinely for IEC audits. A programme of audits has been prepared based on the overall construction schedule, public road improvements programme and forestry works programme. This programme identifies sites which should be active in each two week window, looking ahead over the next 8 -10 weeks. The aim to ensure that a representative sample of sites are audited by IEC, with the number of sites audited varying to reflect the level of construction activity and the sensitivity of active sites in any given period. To date, most of the sites have consisted of forestry operations, and minor public road improvements (bell mouth widening etc). We anticipate the audit frequency increasing as the access track construction starts proper in May 2011. The IEC continues to receive Forestry Environmental Management Plans (FEMPs), and Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) as they become available. In general, the FEMPs and EMPs are comprehensive, covering all of the sensitivities highlighted in the project GIS; however in some cases there has been some requests for minor improvements to ensure that EMPs focus on site specific sensitivities and that they do not become overly generic. In April the following sites were audited: • Braco Sub station Public Road Improvement works (Hewletts) – 06.04.2011 • Feddal Wood (Braco Sub station) forestry works (Scottish Woodlands) - 06.04.2011 • Glen Almond Estate forestry works (Scottish Woodlands) – 06.04.2011 • Trinafour bends Public Road Improvement works (Hewletts) – 07.04.2011 • Crief (Highlandman Loan) Public Road Improvement works (Hewletts) – 07.04.2011 In general, good practice in a number of areas was noted during each of the site visits, with site staff displaying high levels of understanding of environmental sensitivities and the appropriate management measures. However there were a number of relatively minor corrective actions required, mainly relating the better communication of environmental sensitivies to Hewlett’s staff, and the better documentation of specific issues by Scottish Woodlands. Wood that an unmarked drainage ditch at the side of the access track has the potential to convey silty run-off to sensitive watercourses in periods of high rainfallhigh plant movement This has drawn attention to need to identify drainsditches and unmarked watercourses during site walkovers prior to construction work commencing and the need for including these within site drainage plans
Typical audit findings are illustrated in the attached drawings
