Syed Abul Hossain is a man of multifarious caliber. Of his many introductions, he is best described as

a political personality, an educationalist, a philanthropist, a writer, a global activist as well as a devoted social worker. Born in 1951 in Madaripur, a flourishing and culturally advanced rural town in Bangladesh, Mr. Hossain, while was a graduate student joined the 1971 War of Independence for Bangladesh as a freedom

fighter. After liberation, he completed higher studies at the prestigious University of Dhaka qualifying with Masters in Management. Combining academic knowledge with his entrepreneur skills, dynamism and organizational abilities, he soon succeeded in the business world of newly independent Bangladesh. As a philanthropist, Syed Abul Hossain established six colleges, some one hundred primary schools in his district.

He also organized funds for several other institutions – high schools, colleges, socio-cultural organizations and clubs in the area. From these activities of educational charity and humanitarian works, he has earned for himself country-wide reputation. In support of his life’s philosophy for human advancement in Bangladesh, he has penned nine books on socio-economic and political issues. He regularly contributes

articles to various national dailies, both in Bangla and English.In order to achieve his life’s objectives, he joined active politics and successfully contested in the democratic national elections of Bangladesh. Syed Abul Hossain was elected as Member of Bangladesh Parliament with thumping majority from Madaripur-3 constituency in 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2008. He is also associated with several other national bodies, namely, National Management Association, Bangladesh and Dhaka Stock Exchange.

His enthusiasm for good work does not stay limited to Bangladesh only. Syed Abul Hossain is a widely traveled person and he has visited many countries of the world. In October 1994 he represented Bangladesh’s private sector at the Global Trade Summit at Columbus, Ohio, USA. Syed Abul Hossain is one of the Initial Member of “Boao Forum for Asia (BFA)”, Head Quarter of which is located in the Boao aqua polis in Hainan province of China. This Forum was formed by the leaders of 26 Asian countries and Australia. Former & present Heads of State of

different countries including China, India, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia are members of the forum. Syed Abul Hossain is the Chief Representative of Bangladesh to BFA and has chaired a number of important seminars and workshops of the Forum.Suave and soft-spoken Syed Abul Hossain is a charming and magnetic personality.Syed Abul Hossain is married to Khawaja Nargis Hossain and the couple has two daughters, Syeda Rubaiyat Hossain and Syeda Iffat Hossain.

• Yasuo Fukuda was born in Takasaki, Gunma, Japan. He joined Maruzen Petroleum (now part of the Cosmo Oil Company) after graduation from Waseda University in March, 1959.

• From December 1977 to December 1978, He was the Cabinet Secretary of Prime Minister. In 1979, he became the personal secretary of his father Takeo Fukuda, who was the Japanese Prime Minister.

• From December 1979 to March 1991, he was a director of the Kinzai Institute for Financial Affairs. In 1990, he was first

elected as House of Representatives. From June 1992 to October 1999, he was served in the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee of the governing office.

• In July 2000, he became vice President of Home Affairs investigating the Liberal Democratic Party, then he became the Secretary of State, Chief Cabinet Secretary in October the same year. He was re-elected as Chief Cabinet Secretary in April 2001 and in September 2003.

• In September 2007, he was elected as the 22nd president of the LDP. He was then

elected as the 91th Prime Minister of Japan in September 25th 2007 until September 2009 in plenary meeting of the House of Representatives.

• Yasuo Fukuda was the eldest son of later Prime Minister of Japan, so it happened to be two generations of Prime Minister in Japan.

FIDEL V. RAMOS, the 12TH PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES (1992-1998), is remembered for steadfastly promoting the principles of people empowerment and global competitiveness. He quickly led the nation out of darkness in 1993, putting an end to the power crisis that crippled Filipino homes and industries for two years. He pursued, focused and converged programs to fight poverty in accordance with the will of the Filipino people expressed by 229 structural/reform laws enacted by Congress during his term. The Philippine economy recovered dramatically during the years 1993-1997. Ramos vigorously implemented a comprehensive Social Reform Agenda (SRA) that addressed the long-standing problem of poverty. Gross National Product averaged 5 percent annually. Average income of the Filipino family grew more during his administration than in the preceding two

decades. He pushed for the deregulation of key industries and the liberalization of the economy. He encouraged the privatization of public entities, to include the modernization of public infrastructure through an expanded Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) law. While communist insurgency dwindled to historic lows, he achieved a peace agreement with military rebels and the secessionist Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) for which he won for the Philippines the coveted 1997 UNESCO Peace Award -- the first for Asians. FVR is known as the “Centennial” President, having planned and supervised the 100th Anniversary of the country’s Declaration of Independence from Spain on 12 June 1998. Ever the international diplomat, he continues to personally interact with many leaders around the world -- at no government expense. On 12 April 2002, he was elected Chairman of the BOAO Forum for Asia (BFA). FVR has received

some 28 honorary doctorates, half of them from prestigious foreign educational institutions. He also received the 2000 Distinguished Graduate Award from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, his Alma Mater (Class of 1950). He is a retired chief of staff of the Armed Force of the Philippines with the rank of General (1986-1988), and former Secretary of National Defense (1988-1991). He also has masters’ degrees in National Security (1969), Civil Engineering (University of Illinois, 1951), and Business Administration (1980). He is a licensed Civil Engineer (1953).

• Mr. Zeng Peiyan, served as the Chairman of the China Center for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE), Chief Representative of China to and Vice Chairman BOAO Forum for Asia, former Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council of China.

• Mr. Zeng graduated from the Radio and Electronics Department of Tsinghua University majoring in Electronics in 1962, and started to work in the Shanghai Electrical Appliances Institute under the First Ministry of Machine-Building Industry. In 1982, Mr. Zeng went to serve in the Commercial Counselor’s Office of the Chinese Embassy in the United States. After returning to homeland in 1984, He served successively as Head of the General

Office, Director General of the Planning and Construction Department and Vice Minister of the Ministry of Electronics Industry, and then Vice-minister of Machine-Building and Electronics Industry.

• From 1992, he served as Deputy Secretary General (with the rank of principal minister) and Head of the General Office of the Central Economic and Financial Leading Group, and Vice Chairman of the State Planning Commission, 1998, he became the Chairman of the State Planning and Development Commission and Deputy Secretary General of the Central Economic and Financial Leading Group.

• In 2002, Mr. Zeng was elected the Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central

Committee. In 2003, he became the Vice Premier of the State Council. During his tenure in the State Planning Commission and the State Council, Mr. Zeng held leadership position in the State Leading Group for Informationization, the Three Gorges Project Construction Committee under the State Council, the State Council Leading Group for Western China Development, the State Council Leading Group for Rejuvenating the Northeast Region and Other Old Industrial Bases, and the State Leading Group for Energy.

• Mr. Zhou Wenzhong was born in Jiangsu Province in August 1945. He is a university graduate.

• He served as from 1970-1973, Staff member of the Beijing Diplomatic Service Bureau of the People’s republic of China; 1973-1975, student at Bath University and London School of Economics of the United Kingdom; 1975-1978, staff member of the Department of Translation and Interpretation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China.

• He was served as from 1978-1983, Attaché and then Third Secretary of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to the United States of America; 1983-1987, Second Secretary, Deputy Division Director and then Division Director of the Department of Translation and

Interpretation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China; 1987-1990, Deputy Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in San Francisco in the United States of America.

• He also served as from 1990-1993, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Barbados and to Antigua and Barbuda; 1993-1994, Deputy Director General of the Department of North American and Oceania Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China; 1994-1995, Consul General (Ambassadorial Rank) of the People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles in the United States of America; 1995-1998, Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to the United

States of America; 1998-2001.

• Edmund Phelps was born in 1933 in Evanston and grew up in Hastings-on-Hudson. He earned his B.A. from Amherst (1955) and his Ph.D. from Yale (1959).

• He is the 2006 Nobel Laureate in Economics, the Dean of the New Huadu Business School at Minjiang University in Fuzhou, and the Director of Columbia’s Center on Capitalism and Society.

• Phelps’s work can be seen as a program to put “people as we know them” back into economic models – accounting for the incompleteness of their information and studying the effects of their expectations on the market. He applies this perspective in studying unemployment and inclusion, economic growth, business swings

and dynamism.

• Phelps holds many honorary doctorates and professorships, including from the Université libre de Bruxelles (2010), Tsinghua University (2007) and the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (2006), among others. Phelps is a Fellow of the National Academy of Science and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Economic Association, and in 2001 a Festschrift conference was held in his honor.

• In 2008, he was named Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur and awarded the Premio Pico della Mirandola and the Kiel Global Economy Prize. The same year the UBA Law School established the Catedra Phelps and the Phelps Medal for Innovation. In 2011, Professor Phelps received

the Louise Blouin Creative Leadership Award and was named a Full Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

• In 2012, Professor Phelps was elected an Honorary Patron of the University Philosophical Society of Trinity College and was awarded the Mendeleev Medal for Achievement in the Sciences and the President’s Medal of the National University of Ireland, Galway.

• Mr. Jean-Pierre Raffarin was born in 1948 in Poitiers. He went to the Henri IV high school in Poitiers, studied law at Paris-Assas University and then graduated from the Ecole supérieure de commerce in Paris.

• He was a senior lecturer at the Institut d’études politiques in Paris from 1979 to 1988. He has been a lecturer at ESCP Europe since 2007.

• He began his career as Marketing Director with Jacques Vabre Coffee from 1973 to 1976, and then became Technical Advisor to the cabinet of

Lionel Stoléru, Minister for Labor, from 1976 to 1981.

• He was Executive Director of Bernard Krief Communication from 1981 to 1988 and then be-came Executive Officer of the Euro-92 Institute, a post which he held until 1989.

• He was appointed Minister of Small and Me-dium Enterprises, Commerce and Craft in 1995, a post he held until 1997. He was appointed Prime Minister by Jacques Chirac on May 6, 2002, and remained in this post until May 31,

2005. He is Chairman of the Foundation pour la Prospective et l’Innovation (Foundation for Innovation and Future Technologies).

• Christine Lagarde was Born in Paris in 1956. She completed high school in Le Havre and attended Holton Arms School in Bethesda (Maryland, USA). She then graduated from law school at University Paris X, and obtained a Master’s degree from the Political Science Institute in Aix en Provence.

• After being admitted as a lawyer to the Paris Bar, Christine Lagarde joined the international law firm of Baker & McKenzie as an associate, specializing in Labor, Anti-trust, and Mergers & Acquisitions. A member of the Executive Committee of the Firm in 1995, Christine Lagarde became the Chairman of the Global Executive Committee of Baker & McKenzie in 1999, and subsequently Chairman of the Global Strategic Committee in 2004.

• Christine Lagarde joined the French government in June 2005 as Minister for Foreign Trade. After a brief stint as Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, in June 2007. She became the first woman to hold the post of Finance and Economy Minister of a G-7 country. From July to December 2008, she also chaired the ECOFIN Council, which brings together Economics and Finance Ministers of the European Union.

• As a member of the G-20, Christine Lagarde was involved in the Group’s management of the financial crisis, helping to foster international policies related to financial supervision and regulation and to strengthen global economic governance. As Chairman of the G-20 when France took over its presidency for the year

2011, she launched a wide-ranging work agenda on the reform of the international monetary system.

• In 2009, Christine Lagarde was ranked the 17th most influential woman in the world by Forbes magazine, the 5th best European executive woman by The Wall Street Journal Europe, and became one of Time magazine’s top-100 world leaders. The Financial Times named her European Finance Minister of 2009.

• Christine Lagarde was named Chevalier in the Légion d’honneur in July 2000. A former member of the French national team for synchronized swimming, Christine Lagarde is the mother of two sons.

• Mohamed H. Al-Mady has been Vice Chair-man and Chief Executive Officer of Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) since July, 1998. He joined SABIC in 1976 with a Bachelor degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder and Master Degree from University of Wyoming, USA both degrees in Chemical Engineering. He has held various key positions within the Com-pany.

• Mr. Al-Mady’s additional responsibilities in-cludes;

- Chairman, Gulf Petrochemicals & Chemicals As-sociation (GPCA).

- Co-Chairman, US-Saudi Arabia Business Coun-cil.

- Member, International Business Council, World Economic Forum.

- Member of the Board, BOAO Forum for Asia.

- Member, World Sustainability Council.

- Fellow, London Business School.

• He also served as the Member, International Advisory Council, King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST), Chairman and Managing Director, Saudi Arabian Fertilizer Company (SAFCO).

• Mr. Al-Mady delivered many keynote speeches, and specialized work papers at various industrial and economic conferences and forums of global, regional and domestic stands; besides the many encounters he had with press agencies, TV chan-nels and other media on economic and industrial matters. Mr. Al-Mady received many honors and awards.

• Robert D. Hormats (born April 13, 1943, in Baltimore, Maryland) was sworn in as Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment on September 23, 2009.

• Hormats was formerly Vice Chairman of Goldman Sachs (International). He joined Goldman Sachs in 1982.

• He served as Senior Deputy Assistant Secretary, from 1977 to 1979, and Assistant Secretary of State, from 1981 to 1982, at the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs (now Bureau of Economic, Energy, and Business Affairs).

• He was Ambassador and Deputy U.S. Trade Representative from 1979 to 1981. He served as a senior staff member for International Economic Affairs on the United States National Security Council from 1969 to 1977,

where he was senior economic adviser to Henry Kissinger, General Brent Scowcroft and Zbigniew Brzezinski. He helped to manage the Nixon administration’s opening of diplomatic relations with China’s communist government.

• He was a recipient of the French Legion of Honor in 1982 and the Arthur S. Flemming Award in 1974.

• Hormats has been a Visiting Lecturer at Princeton University and the Dean’s Council of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Syed Abul Hossain Chief Representative of Bangladesh to BFA with Mr. Thomas Piquemal Vice President, EDF Group

• Thomas Piquemal, 43 years old, is a graduate of Ecole Supérieure des Sciences Economiques et Commercialese (ESSEC) in France. He began his career in 1991 at the auditing firm of Arthur Andersen.

• In 1995 he joined the Mergers & Acquisitions team of Lazard-Frères bank and became a managing partner five years later.

• In 2008, he took over management of the strategic partnership between Lazard and Apollo, a US investment fund in London.

• On 19 January 2009, Thomas Piquemal joined Veolia Environment as Chief Financial Officer and became a member of the group’s Executive Committee. Since February 2010 he has been group Senior Executive Vice-President in charge of finances for the EDF group; he also supervises

EDF’s North American activities.

• Thomas Piquemal is committed to the fight against social exclusion and joined with Christophe Tiozzo, a three-time world boxing champion, to found the “Académie Christophe Tiozzo” in 2008, which aims to promote social and professional integration of young people from underprivileged neigh-bourhoods, by leveraging the values of boxin.

Syed Abul Hossain Chief Representative of Bangladesh to BFA with Mr. Long Yongtu Former Vice Minister, MOFTEC Member, Council of Advisors, BFA

• Mr. Long Yongtu was elected by the Board of Directors on January 21, 2003 as the Secretary-General of BOAO Forum for Asia, which aims at promoting the development of Asian countries through greater economic integration across the region. Prior to this post, Mr. Long as the Vice Minister and Chief Representative for Trade Negotiations of Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation led China’s negotiations for ten years to join the WTO in 2001. To mark this, Mr. Long was awarded the Man of the Year in Economics by China Central TV in 2003. In July, 2006, Mr. Long was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (Economics) by London School of Economics and Political

Science (LSE). Mr. Long worked for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in New York and DPRK for years and is now a Goodwill Ambassador to the UN Industrial Development Organization(UNIDO. In 2004, he received the Award of Excellence by UN Secretary General Mr. Kofi Annan, for his outstanding contribution to UN’s partnership with China and promoting UN values.

• Apart from his official duties, Mr. Long was the Dean of School of International Relations and Public Affairs, Fudan University. He is Visiting Professor of many renowned Chinese Academic Institutions, including the Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University.

• Mr. Long did his post graduate study in the London School of Economics in the early 70’s and holds a BA Degree of British and American Literature from Guizhou University. In July, 2006, Mr. Long was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (Economics) by London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

Syed Abul Hossain Chief Representative of Bangladesh to BFA with Mr. Jay Y. Lee Vice Chairman, Samsung Group

• Jay Y. Lee was appointed Vice Chairman of Samsung Group in December 2012. Mr. Lee served as President and Chief Operating Officer during the preceding two years beginning December 2010 and as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer during the year beginning December 2009.

• Mr. Lee plays a key role in strengthening the competitiveness of Samsung’s many strategic businesses and laying the foundation for the company’s future growth.

• Mr. Lee’s contributions as a leader of innovation and as an agent of change are widely recognized, which led to a quantum jump in Samsung’s brand

power and recognition.

• Mr. Lee is considered to have been instrumental in making Samsung one of the world’s most beloved brands and a commensurate leap in shareholder value. Mr. Lee is also seen to have played a major role in shaping Samsung into a key component supplier in the IT industry.

• Mr. Lee earned a bachelor’s degree in History from Seoul National University and an MBA from Keio University in Japan. He also attended the doctoral program at Harvard Business School.

Syed Abul Hossain Chief Representative of Bangladesh to BFA with Mr. Leif JohanssonChairman, EricssonA Member of the BoardBOAO Forum for Asia

• Mr. Leif Johansson is the Chairman of the Board of Ericsson. Based on his more than 30 years in executive positions within Swedish companies with global operations, he has extensive experience of international competition and the demands on leadership and expertise.

• Jiang Sixian, Vice Governor of the People’s Government of Hainan Province, P.R. China, is in charge of the day-to-day work of the government as well as responsible for the Development and Reform Commission and other important provincial departments.

• Between 2007 and 2010, Mr. Jiang has been a direct participant in the planning and organizational work for the four BOAO Forum for Asia annual conferences, and played a leading role in conference supporting services. He has a profound understanding of the mission and operating mechanisms of the BFA.

• Prior to his assignment in Hainan, Mr. Jiang held several key leadership positions in the

Shanghai Municipal People’s Government including Vice Mayor. During his term, he made many valuable contributions to the reform and development of Shanghai and the opening-up of the Pudong District.

• As one of the special envoys of the Chinese government, he played an important role in Shanghai’s bid to stage the 2010 World Expo. Furthermore, he actively participated in the APEC Summit in Shanghai in 2001, the 35th Annual Meeting of the Board of Government of the Asian Development Bank, the Fortune Global Forum and the Forbes Global CEO Conference. He has met with more than 100 foreign politicians, famous entrepreneurs and

scholars, and has built a broad domestic and international contact network.

• Mr. Jiang graduated from Shanghai Jiaotong University with a Masters Degree in Engineering. He has majored in Urban Economics at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and in Public Administration at Harvard University, USA. With rich theoretical knowledge and experience in public administration, Mr. Jiang is an expert on policy-making consultancy and reform management.

• Born on 20 May 1941, Mr. Goh Chok Tong is Senior Minister of Singapore and Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

• Mr. Goh joined the Administrative Service of the Singapore Government in 1964. In 1969, he joined the national shipping company, Neptune Orient Lines, and was its Managing Director from 1973 to 1977.

• In 1976, Mr. Goh was elected the Member of Parliament for Marine Parade Constituency and has been re-elected in eight subsequent elections, most recently in 2006.

• In 1977, he was appointed Senior Minister of State for Finance. Between 1979 and 1990, Mr. Goh held various ministerial positions as Min-ister for Trade and Industry, Minister for Health

and Minister for Defense.

• In 1985, he was also appointed First Deputy Prime Minister. On 28 November 1990, Mr. Goh succeeded Mr. Lee Kuan Yew as Singapore’s second Prime Minister. Mr. Goh remained Prime Minister until 12 August 2004, when he relin-quished the position to pave the way for political self-renewal. Mr. Goh remained in the Cabinet as Senior Minister and also took on the appoint-ment of Chairman of MAS.

• Mr. Goh led the People’s Action Party to vic-tory in three General Elections in 1991, 1997 and 2001. From 1992 to 2004, Mr. Goh was the Secretary-General of the party. He relinquished the position in December 2004 to enable a younger team to assume the party’s leadership,

but he remains a member of its Central Executive Committee.

• Mr. Goh received a Bachelor of Arts with Hon-ours (First Class) in Economics from the Univer-sity of Singapore in 1964 and a Master of Arts in Development Economics from Williams College, USA in 1967.

• He was appointed President & CEO of COSCO Group in November of 1998. Capt. Wei was elected into the 16th CPC Central Committee for Discipline Inspection at in 2002. The

other titles of Capt. Wei include: Chairman of China Shipowners’ Association, Chairman of China Federation of Industrial Economics (CFIE), Chairman of China Shipowners Mutual Assurance Association, Advisor of Harvard Business School and Advisor of Panama Canal Authority. Capt. Wei received a Hall of Fame Award from Lloyd’s Maritime Asia in Dec 2003.

Craig Anthony Emerson (born 15 November 1954), Australian politician, has represented the House of Representatives seat of Rankin in Queensland for the Australian Labor Party since the 1998 federal election. Emerson is the Minister for Trade and Competitiveness, the Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Science and Research, and the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Asian Century Policy in the Second Gillard Ministry.

Craig Emerson was elected to Parliament in 1998. After the 2010 Federal election he was appointed the Minister for Trade. His portfolio was expanded to include Competitiveness in early 2012. Following the release of the Government’s Asian Century White Paper in late 2012, he was also appointed Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on

Asian Century Policy. Prior to that, he had portfolio responsibility for small business, competition policy, consumer affairs and deregulation. Craig holds a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) Degree from the University of Sydney, a Master of Economics Degree from the University of Sydney and a Ph.D. in Economics from The Australian National University. He has been a Post-Doctoral Fellow at The Australian National University and has around 20 publications to his name, including a book setting out a vision and plan for Australia’s future. Since becoming a Parliamentarian, Craig has had more than 80 opinion pieces published in national newspapers. Professionally, Craig has been Secretary of a Queensland Government Department, CEO of a Queensland Statutory Authority, an Assistant Secretary in the Department

of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and an Economic Analyst at the United Nations. Craig was a Senior Policy Adviser to former Prime Minister Bob Hawke and earlier, to Finance Minister Peter Walsh. He was Mr Hawke’s adviser on trade policy, microeconomic reform and the environment. In addition to his more than 25 years of public policy work, Craig has successfully run his own small business. Craig’s other interests include Rugby Union and Rugby League and he still plays a few games for the Parliamentary Rugby Union Team.

operation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1992-1996), Ambassador of France in Hanoi (1996-2001), Diplomatic Advisor to the Prime Minister (2002-2005), Ambassador of France in Tunis (from July 2005). He is Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur - Officier de l’Ordre National du Mérite. He has also been Professor at Blaise Pascal University in Clermont-Ferrand and François Rabelais University in Tours.
