Nancy and Allen French
When Dr. Allen French isn’t attendingGeorgia “Bull-dawg” games, you mightfind him planting trees in the medians ofan Alpharetta, Ga. highway. He admits it’sa hobby that’s become somewhat of acalling and he “went green, before it wascool.” As a long-time member of theRotary Club, he’s led many tree plantingprojects. He has served on the AlpharettaTree Commission for the past decade andhas plated trees at every home he’s ownedand throughout his community.Dr. French is more than just a tree
enthusiast, he’s this year’s Hinman DentalSociety President and an avid GeorgiaBulldog fan. He admits that he likes tobark at games – so much so that he often
loses his voice. He graduated from UGAwith a bachelor’s degree in psychologyand says that if he hadn’t gone into den-tistry, he would have been a clinical psy-chologist. After graduating from UGA, heattended the Medical College of Georgiaand then joined the U.S. Navy.He served in the Navy from 1981 to
1990, first as a lieutenant and then a lieu-tenant commander. While in the Navy, hecompleted his periodontal residency andwent into private practice as a periodontistin 1990. His naval background led to adispute he once had with Dr. CharlieRuhl. When serving as co-chair of theClinic Captains, he suggested in his cri-tique that Clinic Captains should be
renamed “Clinic Admirals,” but Dr. Ruhl,an Army man, begged to differ, sayingthat “Clinic Generals” sounded better. Atthe critique meeting that year, Dr. Ruhlfurther made his point by presenting Dr.French with an Army hat. There’s no question that Dr. French
enjoys life – boating, sailing, deep-seafishing, dancing, and frequenting thebeach. And, this is reflected in what hewants attendees — particularly Hinmanmembers — to remember about the 2009meeting. “I hope they learn a lot, makenew friends, have a good time, laugh alot, and feel good about attending (andvolunteering at) the meeting.” W
