The Big Blues Bender, Las Vegas By Mike and Verna Hammond
Verna and I have had the privilege to attend many Blues Festivals, including Portland waterfront, New Orleans, and The Delbert McClinton Blues Cruise several times. We have had an enormous amount of fun and have seen many acts over the years. This month we attended the Big Blues Bender in Las Vegas, Nevada.
We saw artists such as: Keb Moe, Delbert McClinton, Beth Hart, Tab Benoit, Bobby Rush, Roy Rogers, Cyril Neville, Jimmy Thackery, Teresa James, Samantha Fish, Kenny Neal, John Nemeth, Jerekus Singleton, Victor Wainwright, Albert Cummings, Bernard Allison, Mr. Sipp the Mississippi Blues Child, Moreland & Arbuckle, The Delgado Brothers, Matt Anderson & the Bona Fide, Mingo Fish Trap, McCary Sisters, Anthony Gomes, JD & the Straight Shot, Brandon Santini, Roxy Roca, Jw Jones, Betty Fox Band, Monkey Junk, Bender Brass, Jimmy Carpenter, Deanna Bogart, Randy Oxford, Doug Woolverton, Mark Earley, Jane Lee Hooker, Billy D and the Hoodoos, Alastair Green Band, Houlin‘ King Crawdad, Anne Harris, Bob Corritore, Mitch Woods, Leon Blue, Brandon Niederauer “TAZ” , Annika Chambers, Michael Leasure, Russel Jackson, and many more. All the acts were awe-inspiring however a few that stood out for me were: Beth Hart - Honing her craft for over twenty years, it couldn’t be more true that Beth Hart is the Workhorse of the Blues American Woman. Her vocal performances have set audiences back in their seats around the world. She strikes deep emotions in her audiences and brings her listeners from tearful sorrow to hard earned appreciation.
Victor Wainwright – A true Blues Music Award-winning musician. He is the epitome of a fire-breathing Boogie Woogie Blues Rocket. As he puts a “Jerry Lee Lewis” whopping on his keys, his piano becomes an extension of his very heart and soul. His warm, throaty, well-seasoned vocals could be compared to a tall shot of well-aged dark bourbon. He pulls inspiration from his connection and journey with Blues Hall of Famer Pinetop Perkins. During the show Victor made a spectacular splash when he jumped into the nearby pool. Soaked and dripping, he made his return to the stage and continued to play.
..big blues bender continued Kenny Neal - Kenny Neal gives all his guitar licks plenty of room to breathe and each note ample space to rest. His renderings have been compared to the tranquil sounds of an evening rain on an old tin roof. With his clean guitar riffs comes great songwriting as well. He possesses thick hearty vocals, some classic Blues harp work and a genuine quality that is rarely found. This Blues Music award winner forever offers up an exceptional good time blues Gumbo straight from the Louisiana Bayou that will surely satiate.
And the one who stood out to me the most, because of my involvement with young musicians... “TAZ” Brandon Niederauer - Artist at large. When this 13-year old guitar prodigy comes down on his first fret, the room will stand still. Electricity fills the house. The Bender audience bared witness to this. This talented young man has amazed Blues audiences and Blues Allstars with his clean, sharp and blazing guitar style. In the past year, Brandon has joined on stage with some of the most renowned Blues guitarists on the planet. He’s bent strings with well-seasoned Blues Veterans like Gregg Allman, Gary Clark Jr, Warren Hayes, Steve Vie and many more.
To say these artists stood out to me means only that they have impressed me in different ways then the many I have heard before. Every one of these groups we’re top Blues acts, just as you would expect from Vegas. Not one was a disappointment and I recommend you book next year’s Big Blues Bender for an experience of a lifetime. Believe it or not, the rest of Vegas looked dull and boring when compared to the spectacular sights and sounds of the Big Blues Bender. It was great seeing close friends such as Randy Oxford, Peter Dammen and Billy D. I look forward to our next adventure. Walla Walla Blues Society President, Mike Hammond. Danny Newcomb October 14th 9:00 p.m. Danny Newcomb lead vocals and guitar, Rick Friel bass, Eric Eagle on the drums.
Our debut record, Masterwish, is coming out August 1 digitally on Hockeytalkter/rock candy mountain records.
Dance Hall Days Saturday, November 5th, 8:00 p.m. Astonishing musicianship with a repertoire that is wildly diverse and authentic. Audiences are having the thrill of a lifetime. With performances in 2015 at San Francisco Ritz Carlton, Nassau Bahamas, United Kingdom, Sun Valley Resort the word is out, Dancehall is a powerhouse. In 2014 Dancehall Days was honored to be selected along with G. Love & Special Sauce by Entertainment Solutions Inc. (Phoenix, AZ) to headline the 2014 Portland Rock n Roll Half Marathon.
Built To Spill - November 12, 9:00 p.m. Twenty years on from first signing to Warner Bros. Records, Built To Spill is set to return in 2015 with its eighth studio album, Untethered Moon. That’s now two complete decades that one of America’s leading “indie rock” bands has happily made its home on a major label, and in the process redefined that clumsy descriptor of independence by operating wholly and consistently under its own steam, taking the proper time to craft timeless songs and playing endless, epic shows to a growing grip of fans each year. Under the command of its constant leader, Doug Martsch, as well as a new rhythm section, Built To Spill’s creative process continues to ebb, flow and evolve in its own orbit, reemerging on record for the first time since 2009’s There Is No Enemy with ten new songs that fit at once into the band’s resonant catalog while infusing fresh energy into that signature sound.
WWBS Instruments for Kids Program “Stacked In Our Favor”
By J.W “Torch” Davis Remember that store on Poplar, just off 2nd, by Jim’s Glass? Pickers Paradise it was called, and I became friends with owners Melissa and Gary Stack. I asked Gary to keep an eye out, on his buying trips, for musical instruments that might be suitable or our Walla Walla Blues Society Instruments For Kids program. Over the past few years, Gary has supplied us with some instruments at prices well below what they would fetch on his sales floor. On my last visit, Gary took me aside and said “Let me show you something.” He laid out several violins and asked if we could use any of them. I sorted through them and found one restorable violin, a suitable bow and a hard shell case. I advised him to sell the others as wall hangers, as they fetch a fair coin for that purpose. Gary thanked me for looking them over, and then said “Put that good one in your program.” If you have priced a violin lately, you’ll understand what a generous gift this was, particularly from a businessman who could easily have resold it to add to his bottom line. As you drive down Poplar past the old Picker’s Paradise location, you may think that it’s a shame another local business has folded their tent. But, Karma works both ways, and good people are often rewarded. Picker’s Paradise is alive and well and flourishing. They simply outgrew the confines of the old store. If you love yard sales, Picker’s Paradise is a never ending delight. Their new, much larger location is in Stateline on Highway 11, just beyond the lighthouse. (See their Facebook page: Walla Walla Picker’s Paradise) It’s an amazing place.
We’ve never seen anyone leave empty handed. Oh, and say “Thank You” to Gary for all his support.
Take A Stand. No Really, Take It By J.W. Torch Davis
A few weeks ago new neighbors moved in, across the street from our back pasture. Recently, we observed vehicle after vehicle pulling up, then leaving after a short while. Figuring they weren’t selling dope in broad daylight, we concluded that they must be having a yard sale. This being a good opportunity to meet them, we ambled over to say hello and snoop through their stuff. Diane, who was manning the cashbox, shortly summoned her husband Don. Don Murray. “Oh, like the actor”, I said. “Yeah,” Don replied, “The OLD actor!” Turns out, Don is a retired air ambulance helicopter pilot, Viet Nam chopper veteran and auto restoring gearhead. I believe we will get along well. Diane is a nurse, still actively helping people. Near the end of our visit, I asked if they had any music stuff that I hadn’t seen, and proceeded to explain our Walla Walla Blues Society and the Instruments For Kids program. Diane said “Hold on a moment,” and disappeared into the garage/man cave. She returned in a couple minutes, carrying a tall, thin, unblemished box which contained a brand spanking new keyboard stand. I asked the price. “It’s for the kids. Take it” she said. We often receive keyboard donations for the IFK program, and quite often they are given to us sans stand. So, this stand will be put into service with some deserving student in short order. Thank you, Diane and Don. You free one-year membership to the Walla Walla Blues Society and donation tax certificate will be delivered shortly. And, welcome to the neighborhood.
