On April 16, Eckankar, The Religion of the Light and Sound of God, was represented at the New Conscious-ness EXPO at the South Towne Expo Center in Sandy, Utah. People stopped to chat and tell us about their spir-itual experiences. Some remembered us from previous years, and had more questions. They could pick up free books, brochures and HU cards. On May 21 in Ogden, Eckankar sponsored a free discus-sion for the public titled “Tell Us About Your Spiritual Experiences.” Both newcomers and members of Eckankar participated in the discussion, sharing their stories, experiences and sacred moments, and then sang HU together. It is important that people of all religions, as well as those who have no religious affiliation, be able to share thoughts, feelings and experiences. Singing HU will help bring us together so we can do this.

splinted and stay bandaged for some time. Third lesson: It’s bad to hurt a hand, but it’s lucky if it happens to the non-dominant one.

My knees took a hit going down too. In the process of working on them, I mentioned to one of my health practi-tioners that they were swollen even before I fell (which may explain why nothing broke there). She recom-mended that I eliminate foods from my diet that often negatively affect arthritis. I followed her suggestion. It’s working. Fourth lesson: Some-times a solution comes when you are dealing with an entirely different problem.

As the weeks passed, Velvet and I continued to do our volunteer work at the veterans home. Frequently I had to explain what had happened. These elderly people are a group who un-derstand falls. As I tried to make light of my injuries (which, truthful-ly, were minor in the larger picture), I said to people in wheelchairs, “You have survived much worse and lived to tell about it. You’re still here.”

Founder’s Day

Celebration Saturday, September 17

10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

We honor Paul Twitchell as the indi-vidual who brought the ancient teachings of Eckankar to modern-day times. This year we will celebrate with a picnic in the park, with plenty of games and fun.

We will meet at the Ogden Botanical Garden (the site of the May 2015 spring picnic) at 1750 Monroe Boulevard in Ogden. Park in the lot and walk east along the trail beside the river to the first pavilion, marked with a “5” on it. Bring family mem-bers and friends, and a dish to share.

And then I listened as they told their stories and talked about their lives. Fifth lesson: Patience, humor, and a sense of perspective will help get us through many difficult times. Sixth lesson: When we try to help others, we help ourselves.

A month went by. One of the veter-ans home residents had a son (ten years younger than I) who visited his dad every day. One evening he made a misstep on his own porch and fell head-first to the sidewalk, just three feet lower than the porch. He never regained consciousness. The damage was so severe that doctors said he would be paralyzed, unable to speak, and with very limited cognitive func-tion. After several days, the family tearfully took him off life support. He died two days later. I cried with them. And I realized (seventh lesson) just what a precious gift it is to be alive.

Our booth, with volunteers and available books, at the EXPO.
