THE SAn GABRIEL VALLEy STORy
Date Unknown
The Tongva people settle the San Gabriel Valley. Many local city names such as Pomona (Piwongna) and Pasadena (Pasakeg-na) derive from the Tongva language.
1771The Mission San Gabriel Arcángel becomes the first permanent European settlement in the Los Angeles region.
1834
The Spanish missions secularize to become ranchos - giving shape to many future San Gabriel Valley cities.
mid-1800s
Japanese, Filipino, and Chinese settlers arrive and join the agriculture industry of the region.
1967Joe Coulombe transforms Pasadena’s “Pronto Market” into “Trader Joe’s” - turning it into a major nationwide grocery chain.
1941
First U.S. freeway built in the Aroyo Seco (now part of the 110 freeway).
1920CalTech opens. In 1936 its Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory, later to become JPL, conducts some of the first rocket propulsion experiments.
First Tournament of Roses held in Pasadena. In 1920, a stadium is built to house the celebrated football game: the Rose Bowl.
1890
1914
City of Hope Medical Center begins as a free sanitorium to fight tuberculosis. The initial facility was just two tents on 10 acres of land in Duarte.
1948
In-N-Out Burger, soon to become a California fast-food phenomenon, is founded in Baldwin Park.
1973Panda Inn is founded in Pasadena, broadening the American concept of Chinese food beyond Cantonese cuisine. Panda Inn and its fast-food subsidiary Panda Express quickly become nationwide staples.
1987First-generation-American entrepreneur David Tran moves Huy Fong Foods to Rosemead and later Irwindale. His Sriracha Sauce becomes world-famous.
1926The long chain of roads leading from Chicago to L.A. is designated “Route 66” and becomes the most romanticized road in America. As drivers entered the San Gabriel Valley’s orange orchards and Spanish villas, they experienced their first taste of the West Coast.

TodayInternational business has turned the SGV from a suburb of Los Angeles into a suburb of the Pacific Rim. The eastward-expanding population of the L.A. region has placed us in the center of one of the largest cosmopolitan regions in the world.
Along the way, the Partnership has become a well-recognized regional economic development corporation committed to the continued success of the San Gabriel Valley.

1998
SGV Consortium’s name is changed to the “San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership” to reflect its growing and broad membership which includes business, local government, non-profits, and educational institutions.
2011
The Partnership begins hosting annual Economic Forecast Summits specific to the San Gabriel Valley.
1989-1990
1991
The city managers of Alhambra, Monrovia and West Covina decide that the San Gabriel Valley needed a stronger identity to attract new businesses and investors to the region.
Analysis of the SGV finds many assets - a strong infrastructure, a good transportation network, and professional city staff who want to work with business. A joint effort from cities and businesses working together through a non-profit corporation could leverage the power of the region.
This group, led by business leaders Wayne Ratkovich and Blaine Fetter, was incorporated as the San Gabriel Valley Commerce and Cities Consortium - the birth of the San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership.
2002The Alameda Corridor East Project (now ACE) is created to ease SGV traffic as more and more freight is shipped from the Port of L.A. to the distribution centers of the Inland Empire.
198820 cities join together to found Foothill Transit to service San Gabriel Valley cities that were relatively under-served by L.A. County bus lines. This marks a trend of the SGV - forming local alliances to solve problems.
2003The L.A. Metro Gold Line links the cities of the San Gabriel Valley to downtown Los Angeles. Extensions are added in 2009 and 2016, with the completed line expected in 2021.
2000The Partnership hosts its first Legislative Networking Reception, which becomes an annual tradition bringing business leaders together with lawmakers.
1993
The San Gabriel Basin Water Quality Authority is founded to manage groundwater treatment programs.
8 SAN GABRIEL VALLEY ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP MEMBERSHIP GUIDE
The Partnership actively tracks and engages on many key local, state and federal policy issues through our political advocacy program. Through our advocacy efforts, the Partnership promotes positive pro-growth, pro-business policies that improve the San Gabriel Valley and the state and federal business climate.
POLITICAL ADVOCACy
FEDERAL POLICy COunTy ADVOCACy
The Partnership tracks major items of federal policy, especially on taxes, trade, healthcare, transportation, and water infrastructure and works closely with our allies at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to promote pro-business federal policies.
The Partnership works on major economic issues with the County Supervisors and other county departments.
SACRAMEnTO & WASHInGTOn, D.C. TRIPSLEGISLATIVE ACTIOn COMMITTEE
The Partnership regularly travels to Sacramento and Washington to advocate for specific pieces of legislation or major projects here in the San Gabriel Valley. Board members and Partnership staff often visit our San Gabriel Valley representatives and join coalition partners in meetings with other lawmakers.
The Partnership educates its members on new developments in the political arena through monthly Legislative Action Committee meetings. This committee reviews and takes positions on legislation, hears updates on new projects or policy initiatives, and provides a forum for our members to solicit the political support of the Partnership.
SGVPARTNERSHIP.ORG 9
STATE LEGISLATIOn
State legislation is the primary focus of the Partnership’s advocacy efforts. Thousands of bills are introduced in Sacramento each year that would impose new fees, taxes, rules, and regulations which harm California businesses. The Partnership actively supports legislation that improves the state economy while working to defeat bills that make it harder to do business in California.
LEGISLATIVE nETWORkInG RECEPTIOn
The Partnership has co-hosted a major political event with the Council of Governments for the past 20 years – the San Gabriel Valley Legislative Networking Reception. This event, typically held during the Easter recess, draws 250 attendees and is well attended by local city, water, school district, and college trustee elected officials in addition to our representatives from the County Board of Supervisors, State Legislature, and Congress.
MEETInGS WITH LAWMAkERS
The Partnership regularly hosts breakfasts, luncheons, and roundtable events with San Gabriel Valley legislators and lawmakers from other regions.
Small group meetings provide substantive interaction for our members as well as for our elected officials, giving them time to speak in-depth about their work in Sacramento and Washington.

High schools in the San Gabriel Valley are preparing students for both college and careers. Today a high school student can earn college credit and an industry recognized certificate by the time they turn 18.

This consortium shares a Career Technical Education Incentive Grant (CTEIG) and works together to create CTE Academies. They provide exposure to career pathways into health, engineering, business, information technology (IT) and culinary entrepreneurship. The Partnership identifies employers that want to create pipelines
to workforce early and offer students work-based learning opportunities such as field trips, speakers, job shadowing, and internships. Businesses can join an advisory board to expose young workers to the skills needed for entry-level jobs.
COMMunITy COLLEGE PATHWAyS
Community colleges prepare college and high school students for 21st Century jobs. They offer traditional transfer programs to the Cal State and University of California systems and also short-term CTE programs that lead to jobs in advanced manufacturing; aviation; automotive; bio-med; health; engineering; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC); and IT. Community colleges produce firefighters, nurses and police officers. The Partnership can help you connect with these programs.
