Actress Samantha Morton, a two-time Oscar nominee, was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Nottingham in December 2019.

The Clifton-born actress has been made a Doctor of Letters in a ceremony alongside hundreds of students who were graduating.

She found global recognition when she was cast opposite Tom Cruise in the Steven Spielberg-directed sci-fi thriller, Minority Report (2002) before going on to star in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and American TV series, The Walking Dead.

Having spent the early years of her childhood growing up on Sunninghill Drive, in Clifton, the 42-year-old Hollywood actress says she spent much of her time looking out at the campus dreaming of one day having a degree.

Speaking ahead of the graduation ceremony at David Ross Sports Village, in Beeston, she said “The thing that’s different for me about the University of Nottingham [honorary degree] is that my grandma was a dinner lady here for over 40 years.”

She said: “Born-and-bred Clifton, initially, I grew up looking at the campus. We were on Sunninghill Drive and that’s where I looked and always aspired one day to get a university degree.

“I think if you come from adverse backgrounds or whatever, it’s not always an option, my mum went out to work and her first job was as a dinner lady on the campus. So if they were alive today I think they’d be incredibly proud I was here getting a degree from the University of Nottingham.

“It’s special because of that, it’s where I grew up, it’s where I grew up looking thinking I wouldn’t have that opportunity.”

Moving around the care system and living at a succession of foster homes Samantha, who now lives in the Peak District with husband Harry Holm and her three children, says she fell out of the education system early on despite encouragement from schools such as West Bridgford Comprehensive.

Finding her calling at Nottingham’s famous Television Workshop,

whose alumni includes Vicky McClure and Joe Dempsie, she was given the train fare to her first audition in London by the acting school’s then boss Ian Smith, who was her guest of honour at the afternoon ceremony.

She said: “Ian and I stay in touch and he’s very important in my life. He was meant to give me away at my wedding. He did make the wedding but he had a play he was doing here. I love him very much and he’s part of my world.”

Her talent has been recognised with accolades including Academy Award nominations for her performances in Sweet and Lowdown and In America, a Golden Globe Award for her role in Longford and a BAFTA for her semi-autobiographical directorial debut, the 2009 TV film The Unloved.

Throughout her career, Morton’s personal experiences have seen her lend her voice to victims of sexual abuse and she has supported the Fostering Network’s annual campaign Foster Care Fortnight.

She received her honorary degree from the university’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West.

During 2018/2019,Nottingham City Council spent £4,429,000 on street cleaning. However, where ever you look around, Nottingham streets are still littered, despite the huge amount of money spent and imagine what other services would benefit from the money spent if “irresponsible pedestrians and drivers” simply stopped littering!

As a community we need to continually talk, discuss the issue with all our family and friends. Stand up for wanting to live in a litter free area. The Clifton community has a huge generous heart when it comes to helping those in need; donating much

needed items and money when required.

Placing rubbish in a bin costs nothing other than holding onto it until you come across a bin or take it home if there’s no bin around. Often the NG11 team comes across discarded litter which is found only a few feet away from a public bin.

Having spent the last 18 months clearing litter with the dedicated NG11 Clean Champions team, I’ve found that it takes on average one hour to fill a bag whilst clearing, from roads. To give you an idea of what one person could cover (walking) a 38 hour, working week, see below:

Clifton Lane – from Lark Hill to Crusader Island (round trip) – 2 hours

Farnborough Road Island (A453) to Silverdale Island (round trip) – 2 hours

Silverdale Island to the Harvester Pub, Wilford (round trip) – 2 hours

Green Lane Island to Peacock Pub,

Clifton (round trip) – 2 hours

Peacock Pub to Fairham Pub (round trip) – 1 hour

Fairham Pub to the “Welcome to Ruddington” sign (Clifton Lane) (round trip) - 2 hours

Crusader island to Fox Covert Lane (bin) on A453 (round trip) – 2 hours

Barton Green Community Area – 3 hours

The Grove Community – 3 hours

Noble Road Community – 6 hours

Clifton Village – 2 hours

Silverdale – 5 hours

Wilford Village – 6 hours

And what about the rest of NG11? Currently Clifton has one City Council employee that clears litter from NG11. The super volunteers of the Nottingham Clean Champions team help keep our streets clean as they understand that the council clearly does not have the capacity to keep on top of littering as “irresponsibles” continually litter;

the council would need an army of litter pickers to keep on top of the litter that is discarded daily here.

So, whilst ever irresponsibles continue to litter, we need help to keep our NG11 litter free.

Please join the effort and give one hour of your time each month; join the NG11 Clean Champions team. Our litter events are sociable and fun; you’ll get a bit of a workout whilst improving where you live! Love NG11, help keep it clean.

Six lucky neighbours in Clifton are celebrating after scooping an equal share of £180,000 within the first week of the year.

As part of the People’s Postcode Lottery ‘30k a Day’ daily street prize, residents of Waterdown Road were announced as the lucky winners last month, on Tuesday January 7th.

A huge £30,000 was given out to each of the six neighbours who share the postcode NG11 9LB.

Residents spoke of their surprise and how they planned to share their winnings with loved ones

Grandmother-of-two, Marilyn

said: “My knees were shaking when I saw how much money I’d won - and they’re still shaking! I’ve won smaller cash prizes from People’s Postcode Lottery over the past couple of years, £10 here and there, but this is the biggest amount I have ever won.

“I have one daughter and two grandchildren so I’m definitely going to treat them all, and I’d also love a holiday at some point.

“But what I really want to treat myself to, is a DNA test. I was adopted as a baby and I’ve managed to trace my family history back to the 1600s, but I’d really like to find out what makes me, me and

find that final piece of the puzzle.

“I’m just thrilled that I’ve won as I’ve never been very lucky at winning in the past. It’s great to know the money goes towards good causes but winning myself is definitely a bonus!”

Marilyn’s neighbour Robert also reacted to his £30,000 cheque describing the win as “life-changing”.

The Grandad of two said: “I only started playing in August. I’m speechless really, things like this never happen on this road but it’s a fantastic surprise. I have two grandchildren and two daughters

that I’ll be treating. My grandson has also asked to go to Legoland, so that’s on the list.

“Winning this amount of money is life-changing for our family. It makes a big difference and takes the sting out of knowing I won’t have to work much longer. I will continue to play as it’s great knowing we’re helping local causes.”

Another lucky winner was Timothy, who said: “Being part of this win is just fantastic. I’ll leave the spending to my wife, but we have a son and daughter who we’ll treat.

“Winning with your neighbours makes this extra special so we will be celebrating with a drink tonight for sure. It’s a good feeling to help charities but also to win yourself.”

Street Prize presenter Judie McCourt was in Waterdown Road to hand out the winning cheques, she said: “It’s been an absolute pleasure meeting our winners in Clifton.”

Wilford View is an impressive new care home sitting well in an elevated position within urban surroundings. Situated on the site of the former Clifton Bridge Inn pub at the intersection of the A52 and A453.

The local community greatly welcomed the new care home as the former site had remained derelict for a number of years.

The 83-bed complex design

incorporates full-height windows and chamfered side panel details and beautiful detailed brickwork panels to provide a thoroughly pleasing exterior to the eye.

The home is fitted with en-suite wet rooms, communal lounge areas, additional quiet lounges on each floor, separate dining rooms, a reception with a café, a hairdressers, treatment rooms and it even has its very own cinema.

To the back of the development is a large outside patio area with a sun terrace.

Clifton and Silverdale residents praised the new care home saying that it was “state-of-the-art”

The pictures have recently been released by Rayner Davies, the architects for the project, showing how the Wilford View care home looks from the inside.

Project architect for Raynor Davies, Julien McGuiness said, “This one was not without its challenges, but the result is a credit to everyone that was involved”.

Strangers of Nottingham band together to help a man struggling to afford food and electricity.

A 59-year-old man from Nottingham recently begged for help with a notice on his front gate that said he was struggling to make ends meet, in the hope that a neighbour might be able to help.

The note read ‘PLEASE HELP. I have no food and no electricity. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.’

In the lead up to Christmas, a couple of locals from Clifton, Mark and Craig, came across the note attached to a bag-for-life left by 59-year-old William on the garden gate of his Carlton home. After meeting with him, the pair discovered that William was struggling to cope after not having electricity or gas in his home for over a year. His house was freezing so Craig put £100 of his own money on the gas and electricity metre and arranged it to be fixed after discovering it was in need of repairs.

Locals rallied together to get William back on to his feet. Within hours of his cry for help, he had already received food items from

Clifton food bank.

A Facebook post was also sent out seeking help with a link to a Paypal fundraising pool so that people could donate anything they could. The page reads: “William is a lovely man Who truly has fallen on hard times... He’s never claimed benefits or asked for anything of that sort, he has tried to get by, by

selling his belongings in his garage sales!!! LET’S COME TOGETHER AND HELP! It seems he doesn’t have any family to help so it’s down to us!”

Well-wishers, even those struggling themselves – have so far donated over an astonishing £13,700, a significant increase from their original £2,500 goal.

After revealing that his last ‘proper’ meal was jam sandwiches, scores of people pledged to bring him more food and Jenny Connell, who lives in Carlton, has offered to drop him off a hot dinner a couple of times a week.

Businessman Craig Crawford, who set the ball rolling, said: “It’s heart breaking but heart warming seeing people give their last penny to help him. It’s humbling and I’m proud to see the community pull together to help when someone is in need. It’s a great example of what social media can do.”

The money raised will be used to help William, with some being set aside for others in desperate need. William, who lives alone in the house following the death of his mother, had been making ends meet by selling off furniture and games in garage sales until recently.

Previously he had too much pride to claim, saying others were in greater need. Adult social care has been contacted in a bid to help him claim benefits. He may also be able to claim financial support via Boots benevolent fund as a former employee.

Strangers join together to answer a local man’s plea for help

It was Valentine's Day that the story of Torvill and Dean truly turned into something special, a fairytale on ice in Sarajevo. WENDY COOPER recalls events leading up to the 4.28 seconds when the city of Nottingham and the nation fell in love with the dynamic duo in February 1984 and what happened next.

They said it could never happen. But then it did.

On the day Cupids arrow traditionally launches countless romantic encounters, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean hit the bullseye with ice skating judges and charmed a British audience who have been enchanted by the

Nottingham pair ever since.

For the digital generation with a choice of multi-channel media networks to satisfy their seemingly perpetual viewing appetite, it is difficult to convey the excitement generated by this young couple's performance at the Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo almost 40 years ago.

Holding off challenges from Japan and East Germany, staging such a prestigious event was a major coup for what was then Yugolsavia's capital, heralding a financial boom in tourism for the city until the devastation of the Bosnia War laid waste much of its historic architecture and slaughtered thousands of its indigenous population.

There had been an inauspicious start to the tournament, too, when the Olympic flag was hoisted upside down at the opening ceremony but that did not dampen the spirits of competitors or spectators, especially the huge

television audience that awaited back home in eager anticipation of Torvill and Dean's appearance in the ice dancing finale.

No that the pair were exactly unknowns. Far from it.

They had already won gold medals at both the European and World Championships and since 1978, had never been beaten in the British Figure Skating Championships which were held annually on their 'own manor', the Nottingham Ice Stadium, today the Ice Arena or National Ice Centre which can be accessed by Bolero Square. More later on Maurice Ravel's musical composition.

In fact, it was at the old rink that Torvill was first bitten then utterly smitten by the ice skating bug. Born in Clifton, she attended Clifton Hall Girls' Grammar School, situated in Clifton Village...

12 LEGAL The latest news is online nottinghamlocalnews.com

Kenneth Curtis, Solicitor & Notary Public LLB Hons TEP SFE, Curtis Parkinson Solicitors

The cost of care for the elderly isn’t far from the headlines these days. It’s not without controversy either. Many of us may recognise the benefits of home care, but the cost of a commercial arrangement is beyond the reach of most. So, it’s likely that children or other family members will step into the role of carer. Yet few are aware of how this may impact on their lives, finances or their Wills.

Money Matters

So, what happens if you give up a career or your independence to care for a relative and you’re left out of their Will (knowingly or not) when they die? What are your ‘rights’?

Understandably, due to a spate of recent claims, legal specialists are wary of making predictions. That said, in cases where reasonable financial provision hasn’t been made, the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975

(Inheritance Act) enables the court to change what’s been stipulated in the Will, for certain family members and dependants.

Who Can Make a Claim?

1. A spouse or civil partner;

2. A former spouse or civil partner (assuming they haven’t re-married or made a new civil partnership);

3. A child or someone who was treated as a child;

4. A person who was being financially maintained.

Claiming Financial Support

Whilst the law respects a person’s right to leave their money to whom they choose; the Inheritance Act is designed to allow a court to make reasonable financial provision for eligible claimants in financial need.

A Challenging Case

Delaforte v Flood 2019 is a good example. Lynsey Delaforte, provided 24-hour care for her grandmother Joan Flood for over

seven years from 2008, moving into her home after giving up a ballet career. However, when Mrs Flood died in 2016, she left her entire estate to her children, leaving Lynsey with nothing.

Although Lynsey received carers, attendance allowances and top up payments, this was far below what a commercial care arrangement would have cost.

She then made a maintenance claim against her grandmother’s estate to help establish a new career as a dance teacher. Her mother supported her but her uncle, who was financially independent, argued that she had been paid for her service and they had had a commercial arrangement, so deserved nothing.

The court awarded Ms Delaforte £110,000 and she was also allowed to stay in her grandmother’s house rent and bill-free until it was sold.

Our Advice

This case clearly shows that when

an adult relative demonstrates a need for financial support, the court is likely to uphold a claim under the Inheritance Act.

However, as commercial and personal arrangements become more blurred, case law is likely to become more unpredictable.

Following the Christmas festivities, members have taken part in a food amnesty, collecting festive treats alongside other food items and gift wrapped toiletries.

Meg Kozian, the local Slimming World consultant, said: “This is the 3rd year we have given our support to vulnerable young people from the Rushcliffe area.

The amnesty encourages my members to refocus on their weight loss dreams whilst helping to provide some treats that would not otherwise be available.

NEWS The latest news is online nottinghamlocalnews.com

Clifton residents have been asked what they would like to see in the area in 2020.

As the new year is underway, residents have been having their say on Clifton and how it could be improved for them. A range of answers have been given so far, ranging from a Primark Store, to new homes and better parking conditions.

Currently, two retail stores are available To Let on the housing estate’s newest retail park, Clifton Triangle where Lidl, B&M and Sue Ryder stores are.

Clifton local and mum of two, Kathy Williams said, ““I think the area is crying out for a big store like Primark”

The 30-year-old added: “There are a lot of people that live here. We have a range of supermarkets in Morrisons, Iceland, Lidl, and a Co-op - so a bigger clothes store would make sense. It would stop people having to go into the city all the time.”

Her friend Jess Rowston, 31, agreed, saying she would like to see a clothing store occupy one of the empty units at Clifton Triangle. “It’s a shame that two spaces haven’t been filled. I’d be interested to know the rent for them. I think we could do with a nice clothes store, or a shoe store.”

John Parks, 59, said he wanted to see more done to address the parking issues in the area.

Nottingham City Council has said it is looking at bringing in a parking permit system in the future to help

combat ongoing parking issues.

Mr Parks said: “I’ve seen buses affected by how people park in Clifton. It’s a busy place to live. There needs to be some sort of enforcement. Commuters and students park where they like and it has a knock-on effect.”

Martin Howson, 49, of Clifton, who works in a pharmacy, said: “I think the area needs more new houses.

“Some properties are looking tired from back in the day when they were first built. New investment in

the area is needed. It would free up houses for first time buyers as well.”

A maximum of 278 houses could be built in Hawkesley Gardens, Clifton, according to Nottingham City Council’s Local Plan.

But the council says the development should be sensitive to the neighbouring historic environment and heritage assets because of its proximity to a conservation area, a registered historic park and garden and the Grade I listed Clifton Hall.

February should be a mixture of rain, frosts and milder spells. Soil preparation will pay dividends and sowing seeds will give you and the family a positive view of early growth.

Beds and Borders Spring bulbs such as crocus, winter aconite and snowdrops should be emerging in protected areas of the garden. The pink propeller blooms of cyclamen corms will also be creating a delightful warm glow to areas that are sheltered from the cold. They like rich well drained soil and will easily self-seed if the conditions are just right.

Millions of gardeners have realised that buying almost fully grown plantlets in early summer ready to plant out in patio pots, hanging baskets and garden borders is not the cheapest way of buying plant material. The trend nowadays is to buy seedlings or plug plants early in the new year and grow these plants in pots indoors until they are ready to plant out in the garden.

Lawncare Don't walk on the grass while it is frozen or frosted. Crushing the frozen blades of grass results in a burn that turns brown and the footsteps will be visible for weeks. In mild spells why not cut the grass to keep the lawn looking trim.

Your lawn care plans for 2020 After the winter, moss is prevalent on many lawns. Now is a great time to treat with proprietary lawn feeds that include a moss control or if all that sounds daunting call Greener Gardens, we complete a Free no obligation survey. We work with you, understanding your aspirations to identify work that can be completed to create the lawn you desire.

It’s not too early to think about your lawncare plans for the year, but if nothing else get the mower blade sharpened.

Grow your own If weather conditions don’t allow you to get outdoors, then use the time wisely to draw up your plans

for the year, and order or buy seeds ready to sow when they do.

Many gardening books tell you to sow seeds of parsnip in February because they take a long time to germinate.

Buy your favourite varieties of seed potato from your local garden centre before they sell out. Set them out in a single layer at the bottom of a seed tray and keep them somewhere in good light that is cool and frost-free.

Patio Tubs & Baskets Keep dead-heading winter pansies and feed occasionally with a liquid All Purpose Plant Food when the weather is mild.

Paths and Drives Clean up any green mould growth

on the patio slabs, brickwork or walls with one simple treatment with Patio Magic! Just water or spray on during a dry spell – the active ingredient works for several months to give great control of mould, lichen and algae.

Patio Magic! is quick and easy to use without the need for hard work. Just dilute the concentrate in a watering can and thoroughly wet the affected surface, then simply leave it to dry. If that sounds hard work Greener Gardens can do it for you.

Garden Diary is written by John Draper of Greener Gardens, your local independent BASIS Lawn specialist. For help with all aspects of your lawn call 0115 837 8439 or visit www.greenergardens.co.uk.

EM-Con Nottingham returns to the Motorpoint Arena in the city centre, on 2nd and 3rd of May 2020 with a show that is set to be out of this world.

There’ll be the usual mix of celebrity guests, cos-players, attractions, many memorabilia stalls, dealers, art and film & TV props coming together for the most exciting show in the galaxy.

Among the guests for this year’s show are Doctor Who star Tosin Cole, who plays current TARDIS team member Ryan, Joonas Suotamo who plays Chewbacca in Star Wars, Game of Thrones and Skins star Hannah Murray, LaMonica Garrett from TV’s Arrow, Supergirl and The Flash, John Ross Bowie from The Big Bang Theory and Tommy Flanagan, star of Sons of Anarchy, Gladiator and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. They’ll be on hand to sign autographs, meet fans and join them in photoshoots and will be appearing alongside a number of other guests from the entertainment world.

Since the first event back in 2014, EM-Con has grown to become a firm fixture in the Nottingham calendar and proved so popular

in its first year that only the Motorpoint Arena could meet the demand for tickets. With more attendees coming every year, EM-Con is the perfect day out with friends and family, and has been so popular with some fans that last year a couple even chose to get married at the show in full cosplay!

Tickets are on sale now. Full details of the Em-Con weekend can be found online at www.nottingham.em-con.co.uk, including full guest line up, range of ticket options and all the latest announcements.

Showcase Cinema de Lux Nottingham is proud to announce it is sponsoring local football team, Riverside Rapids U12s.

The Riverside Rapids is a mixed football team based in Nottingham, playing in the YEL Nottingham league. Last season they won the league and cup for the U11s age group, and the national cinema chain will be sponsoring the team’s match kit and sweatshirts.

Showcase Cinemas are sponsoring over a dozen local sports teams across the country, covering sports from football to rugby, athletics to swimming, supporting local communities surrounding its cinema locations.

Mark Barlow, General Manager, Showcase Cinemas UK, said: “We’re aware that many local

schools and sports clubs struggle for funding to provide kit and equipment, so we’re delighted to announce that we’ll be sponsoring local teams across the country. Working with and providing for the local community is extremely important to Showcase and we are excited to sponsor Riverside Rapids U12s. With youth football extremely popular in and around Nottingham, we want to encourage the next generation of young footballers to develop their sporting talents even further.”

On being sponsored by Showcase Cinemas, Riverside Rapid’s Martyn Jones said: “I would like to thank Showcase Cinema de Lux Nottingham for sponsoring the Riverside Rapids U12s. It’s great to see such an established institution supporting the local community and children’s sports teams.

Showcase Cinema Nottingham is located at Redfield Way, Lenton, Nottingham, NG7 2UW.

friendly meetings. The Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month at Clifton Village Hall, from 7.15 p.m. Please come along, make new friends and learn new skills. Membership for 2020 is £43 for 11 meetings and includes 8 copies of the WI Life magazine.
