ARCHIVE Work at the Archive continues apace with a number of requests for information and images being addressed.

This month appears to be the month of Rail Trails with requests for three different trails in widely separated locations in regional Victoria.

Along with this we have also had requests regarding various former Railway residences. In addition, a request was fulfilled for information regarding the Chandler Bridge on the Outer Circle Railway.

We have also received a number of donations from various sources. These will be processed and will then be available for use in responding to requests for information.

GORDON STATION Work has commenced at Gordon Station and this week’s report from VicTrack shows that the work is proceeding according to the plan. The works are planned to take about 12 weeks after which there is time set aside for inspection prior to handover.

John More

Peter Carwardine, Colin Pike and I were there on Sat August 29th and noticed that the only work that had been done was to construct a temporary fence around the building, toilet and water tank. We attended to the grass and worked on the door of the Goods Shed to make it more secure, this is where most of the furnishing is stored, apart from Geoff Peterson’s factory and my garage.

We are unable to schedule a date for a gathering at the station for September as the normal date conflicts with the Swap Meet. Peter & I might go up one day during the

week to attend to things and will, we hope be able to report on the progress of the work being done. Once the work starts, it should take about 12 weeks, but we need progress reports and photos.

To any member who lives in Ballarat or is driving along the Western Highway, please call in and take a photo. The benefit of the mobile phone is that you can send a copy to me Allan French at 0408 563 387 or email: [email protected]. This building is 156 years old and has had many modifications over its life. The most recent was in 2004 when the DoI installed new roof iron, re stumped the building and installed new flooring. We have some photos of that work but would like to continue the photographic history with the changes that will take place this time. So I am not asking for anyone to come to the next working bee but to call in the next time they are passing and take a look and a photo. Hopefully there will be some changes soon.

At the Museum: - Visitors and Customer Service report Greetings all, from the Museum Team.

The Museum continues to welcome an average of 70-80 visitors each Saturday which is a gratifying figure considering we have had the coldest winter for some 25 years. One fine and mild day saw 125 come through…a very good result.

We are also currently welcoming a considerable number of mid-week groups, one or two every week. This is keeping the Museum customer service team busy with special openings. The largest recently was the Keilor Heights Primary School of around 70 as well as a senior group from Melton, both at the same time on the same (cold and wet) day. Thanks go to several volunteers who assisted in educating and escorting these parties around, a task which required some skill and patience to keep several groups separate at the same time as allowing all to inspect the exhibits.

The vintage 0-scale model railway is running and proving popular with our visitors. A small team is running the railway each week, while undertaking continual repairs to both layout and rolling stock. It is somewhat temperamental, most likely because of its age, and must be treated with care. Given that they are now some 60 years old, and hand-built, the locomotives and rolling stock are somewhat fragile. Many repairs to locomotives in particular are still required, and we would appreciate assistance from anyone with the skills who is interested in model railways who would like to help in getting these running again.

The Mitta Mitta buffet car is open for inspection now, and is available for party bookings, and these are now starting to come in. It is a great place for a children’s birthday party, providing an unusual venue that kids love.

The Museum Facebook page continues to prove a real asset increasing awareness of the Museum, regularly attracting many new “friends” and “likes.” Other social media opportunities are being explored.

Our goal of Sunday opening remains, but is still dependent on a few more volunteers. At some stage soon, we will conduct a survey of our volunteers to see if some of our Saturday regulars are able or willing to switch to Sundays in future. We would like to commence Sunday opening at the start of 2016 if we can. Enquiries would be very welcome.

At the Museum: - Works Team The works team has been continuing to prepare H 220 and R 704 for the installation of access stairs to

the cabs. The work to prepare H 220 is nearly complete only requiring the footings for the stairs to be dug and the concrete poured. This will be done when we have the final drawings of the stairs and landing. R 704 has required considerably more effort to prepare, as we needed to move the locomotive forward nearly four metres. R 704 was moved back in early 2006 as part of the Yarra Valley Railway’s preparation work to transport RM22 to

Healesville for restoration to operation. The R has not been moved in nine years and it was necessary to prepare all moving parts to ensure no damage was done during its short move. This mostly consisted of cleaning out all of the various oiling points on the motion and valve gear then giving them a good soak in WD 40 over a few weeks followed by oil. Once we were happy that the motion gear was free and able to move, the smokebox door was opened and diesel was poured down the blast pipe followed by oil to lubricate the valves and cylinders, this was continued until we could see oil draining from the cylinder cocks. This proved successful and the reverser in the cab became free once again. We were then able to use the reversing wheel to wind the loco from full forward to full reverse with ease. We intend to retain this in operational condition so that the Museum guides can give visitors demonstrations of the Walschaerts valve gear. After creating a suitable anchorage point we decided to try a test pull with a couple of fairly low-capacity winches to see if any movement at all could be achieved. To our surprise, the R moved a few centimetres with relative ease and with assistance from Paul on the pinch bar we continued to move it slowly forward over a metre. The following Saturday we hired a five-ton capacity Tirfor winch to finish the move and this made things much easier with no need for the pinch bars, the loco rolled very smoothly and we achieved over a full revolution of the wheels. The works team will now move to preparing the site ready to install the access stairs.

GREAT RAILWAY SWAP MEET – SATURDAY 26 SEPTEMBER A reminder to all that the date for the Great Railway Swap Meet on 26 September is drawing close.

There has been a good response for stall bookings, so there will be lots of items to purchase. Our Sales Department and the Library will be present along with our small lots tables. We still have some stalls left so if you want to recycle some of your collection, why not book a stall.

We are hopeful of getting coverage in the Local Press and information will be going to many kindred organisations in the Model and Miniature groups.

We are also seeking volunteers amongst members living in postcode areas surrounding the Venue. Going for a short walk round you home area is great exercise, so we may contact you asking for you to distribute a few flyers in letter boxes around your place of residence. Please help us out. This is a simple way to help your society and keep fit.

A final reminder flyer will be found in your September mail out. Put the date in your diary and come along.

STAN FLATTELY FILM FESTIVAL THURSDAY 22 OCTOBER The next Film Night to be shown at Ross House will be on October 22nd. The Film Group invite members to look through their video collection and consider submitting a film that they have taken. Once this was the night of the year where we had a Film Competition, however with declining number of entries submitted it became clear that it was not possible to hold a film competition. October has always been the month for the best of the railway films to be screened so we are asking you to contact me or Jonathan Scutt and pass on your details of your film, maybe it was taken on a ARHS tour or maybe it was taken during a day of train watching. Without your support we cannot put on these film nights. So please consider submitting. I can be contacted by email; [email protected] and Jonathan's email is [email protected]

Today we are embarking on our longest day trip yet. To take advantage of Seniors Week (when all metropolitan and V/Line trains and coaches are free to seniors) we are off to Portland to ride the cable car. However you must book your train and coach travel, including reserving your seats before you let Hugh know you are travelling.

Seats are expected to be reserved very quickly and we suggest you book immediately after 10:00 am. Bookings may be made by phone on 1800 800 007 and you will need to have Credit Card, Seniors Card (if applicable) at the ready – but expect a long wait in the queue and you may be too late to secure a seat.

Our lunch venue for the day will be the Thistle Bar and Bistro in Portland. Food will also be available on the train.

We travel by train to Warrnambool departing Southern Cross at 7.20 am then by coach to Portland departing 11.10 am arriving at Portland at 12.45 pm.
