THE ENJOYMENT OF GOLF depends a great deal on the co-operation, consideration and courtesy extended by fellow competitors.

What is true of the game also applies to Club Membership. The spirit and image of a Golf Club is projected by the way fellow members show respect, courtesy and consideration for one another.

This courtesy and consideration should be extended to the choice of dress generally and in the standard of conduct on the course and in the Clubhouse.

The standards of a Golf Club may be judged by the etiquette of its members.

It is always better to give a point rather than take one.

“For when the one great scorer comes to write against your name, it will not be that you won or lost, but how you played the game”.

7

Established in 1925, the Club has a fi ne reputation for upholding the tradition of the game of golf.

Members are expected to be conversant with the rules set by the Club and to observe the etiquette of the game, ensuring that the Vines Golf Club of Reynella retains its status as an excellent example of a Club dedicated to the enjoyment of golf and the well being of its Members.

Members are encouraged to introduce guests/visitors to the course. The green fees paid will assist in maintaining the course for all Members. Visitors remain the responsibility of the introducing member who is liable for any loss or damage that may be caused by the guest/visitor.

Mobile phones in the Clubhouse should be restricted and where possible calls should be made in the foyer or verandah areas. Mobile phone use on the golf course is discouraged.

A Personal Insurance (PIP) cover is provided for fi nancial members only, but the cover does not provide in any respect for members property or equipment. Members are strongly urged to obtain appropriate insurance cover for their equipment or personal effects.

The consumption of alcohol is permitted on the course subject to the licence held by the club, providing that the players conduct does not impose on other players. Excessive abuse of this privilege will attract disciplinary action by the Committee of Management.

Your Club professional is an integral and vital part of the Club and as such should be given every opportunity to supply all your golfi ng requisites from his store.

Tuition arranged by appointment telephone 8381 3300.

2. In 27, 36 and 72 hole events the last 18 holes shall be used. If a tie remains, count back as above applies.

3. In handicap events the relevant handicap or fraction thereof shall be applied.

DISCONTINUANCE OF PLAY (DANGER TO PLAYERS)Where there is a danger to players on the course (ie lightning, high winds etc) or in the opinion of the Committee or delegated offi cial the course is deemed to be unplayable, the siren will sound in accordance with the directions as printed on the scorecard and Local Rules.

Golf Competitions and How They Are PlayedThese notes are only intended to assist in the general concept of how various competitions are played. They must be read in conjunction with the Rules of Golf and in particular the Match Committee shall lay down the conditions under which a competition is to be played (Rule 33).

StrokeThe score at each hole is entered on the scorecard, totalled and the player’s full handicap deducted. The player who completes the stipulated round in the least nett strokes will be the winner. Usually a gross winner is also determined.

ParIn Par play the score is entered on the card in the same way as in stroke play with the exception that where the score exceeds par for the hole, after allowing for handicap stroke (if the player is in receipt of one) the score should not be written in. It is the custom that when a player is beaten by Par, the ball shall be picked up. This helps speed up play.

After entering the stroke score on the card, the result is marked in the column provided with a ‘+’ sign for a win, an ‘0’ for a half and a ‘-’ for a loss. At the end of the round the plus and minus signs are added and the nett result written in as so many ‘up’, ‘down’ or ‘all square’.

A player is allowed his full stroke handicap and the strokes are taken at holes as indicated on the stroke index on the card.Where the handicap is more than 18, two strokes will be allowed on the number of holes that the handicap exceeds 18. These strokes will be taken in the same order as followed for the fi rst 18 holes unless the index goes beyond 18.

StablefordThis system of scoring by points was introduced by Dr. Stableford of the Wallasey Golf Club (Liverpool, England) in 1932 and has become very popular

The popular method of playing a Stableford competition is for the player to take strokes at holes as in a Par competition using full handicap and to score points on the nett result at each hole. At the end of the round all points scored are added up and the player having the highest number of points is the winner.

In scoring, after allowing for handicaps, a player who scores par receives 2 points, for 1 over par 1 point; for a birdie or 1 under par, 3 points; for an eagle or 2 under par, 4 points, and so on.

16

p

17

For example, a player receiving a stroke on a par 4 hole scores 4 giving him a nett 3; for this he receives 3 points. A player at a par 3 hole scores a 4 but does not receive a stroke; for this he would receive 1 point.

Four Ball Best Ball v’s ParTwo players play as partners each taking strokes at holes as in a par competition. If one of the partners wins a hole and the other halves it, only the win is counted. If one halves a hole with par and the other loses it, only the half is counted and so on. Plus, half and minus signs are added at the end of the round and recorded as in an ordinary par competition.

In a four-ball handicap event care must be taken to mark the scores of each player in separate columns headed by initials of the player. If the scores are mixed and it is impossible for the Committee to check the card, the players will be disqualifi ed.

Four Ball Best Ball v’s StablefordPlayed in exactly the same manner as above except that the better ball of the partnership will be credited with points instead of plus, half or minus. In four-ball events players should discontinue play of the hole if they cannot better their partner’s score.

FoursomesTwo players play as partners and use one ball. The partners strike off alternately from the tee and thereafter strike the ball alternately during the play at each hole. Scoring is done as for a stroke round and the total is subject to a deduction of half the partner’s aggregate handicaps.

NOTE: If either incurs a penalty stroke it does not alter the rotation of play. In a foursome stroke play competition which consists of more than one stipulated round the order of play may be changed between rounds unless the Committee has laid down as a condition of play that the original order of play must be preserved throughout the competition.

GeneralAll the foregoing competitions are forms of stroke play and subject to the Rules governing stroke play. Special rules for par and stableford competitions are set out in Rule 32. Rule 31 covers the special rules for four-ball par and stableford competitions.Foursomes may be played under either stroke play rules or match play conditions and Rule 29 is relevant to foursome’s events.

Other CompetitionsIn addition to the competitions listed above, many clubs conduct competitions that are not specifi cally covered in the Rules of Golf. Some of the more popular types of play are listed below, together with suggestions regarding methods of conducting those events. It cannot be too strongly emphasised however, that since these competitions are not covered by the Rules of Golf, the Committee must carefully lay down in advance and publish the conditions of play. The State Association will not, except in the most exceptional circumstances, give a decision on any query submitted when play is conducted otherwise than in accordance with the rules. It is also emphasised that singles events cannot be held in conjunction with four-ball events as the Rules do not allow a player to be simultaneously a fellow-competitor and a partner. A similar prohibition applies to playing a stroke round and a match play round concurrently.

Mixed Four Ball Best Ball Par or StablefordThese games are played as described previously, except that the woman plays from her own tees, uses her own scorecard, local rules, etc. The result is only transferred to her partner’s card when her score for the hole is better than his. Care must be taken when checking the card to refer to the women’s index when dealing with holes halved or won by her.

Mixed FoursomesMixed Foursomes are played in the same manner as foursomes except that the women use their own tees and observe their own local rules when it is their turn to play.

The Committee should lay down a condition of play whether the male or female is required to play from the fi rst tee, and in competitions played under stroke conditions, and consisting of more than one stipulated round, whether this order is to be preserved.

Canadian FoursomesPlayed as above, except that both players play tee shots at every hole and afterwards continue with whichever ball they nominate, with the partner playing the second stroke.Handicap allowance is 3/8 of aggregate stroke handicap.

Pinehurst FoursomesBoth players play tee shots at each hole, and then play a second stroke with their partner’s ball. One ball is then selected and play proceeds as in foursomes with the owner of the ball selected playing the third stroke. Handicap allowance is 3/8 of aggregate stroke handicap for stroke competitions.

Medley CompetitionPlayed as four ball - either Par or Stableford - but two men or two women play on 3/4 of their stroke handicap using their own card or full handicap using the men’s card.

Ambrose CompetitionA Team Stroke Event usually played by a group of four but can be any number. On every hole, each member of the team may hit a tee shot. The team then selects one of the tee shots from which to play. All members of the team may then hit from that position. This procedure is repeated until the ball is holed. Team members can play in any order at any time.

Tee Shots:4 ball - Each team member’s tee shot must be used at least THREE(3)

times per eighteen (18) holes.3 ball - Each team member’s tee shot must be used at least FOUR (4)

times per eighteen (18) holes.2 ball - Each team member’s tee shot must be used at leas SIX (6)

times per eighteen (18) holes. The scorer must record whose tee shot was used on each hole.

Selected ShotThe position of the selected shot is marked. Each player may then place their ball within one club length of the marked position, no closer to the hole and play from this position. If the selected shot is on the fairway, in the rough, the fringe of the green or in a hazard, the ball must be placed within one (1) club length of the elected shot, no closer to the hole and must remain on the fairway, the rough, the fringe of the green or in the hazard. In a sand bunker, the sand may be raked prior to any ball being placed.

On the Putting Green:The position of the selected ball is marked.Other team members may then place their ball within one putter head length of the marked position, no closer to the hole and putt from this position. To speed up play a player may hole out on the green.

Scorecard:The scorecard must show each team member’s handicap and must be signed by the marker and countersigned by one other team member.

19

20

HANDICAPS:Four groups of four, one eighth of the total team handicap is used. For groups of three, one sixth is used and for a two ball one quarter.

Flag CompetitionThe score taken on each hole is entered on a card as in a stroke round. When a player has completed a number of strokes equal to the par of the course (as shown on the score card) plus his stroke handicap, he will have fi nished the round. The fi rst player to start in the competition will carry the fl ag (mounted on a stick) and plant it on the spot where his ball lay at the fi nish to the round. If the ball is in the rough the fl ag may be planted at the side of the fairway, but no nearer the hole. If a subsequent player has not fi nished his round when he reaches the fl ag, he carries it with him, and replants it when he reaches the end of his strokes. The winner is the player who carries the fl ag the longest distance from the fi rst tee and it normally happens that the fi nal position is somewhere beyond the 18th green usually on the 1st or 2nd hole. When the competition is played in two or more divisions, two or more fl ags, clearly marked will be necessary.NOTE: Players are required to complete full 18 holes.

Match PlayMatch play is second only to stroke play as the most popular form of competition in golf. In fact, match play and stroke play are the bedrock forms of competition. And there are many different ways to play match play, all built around its core principle: players (or teams) compete to win individual holes, with the side winning the most holes, with the side winning the most holes claiming the match. Here is an introduction to those match play formats.

Singles Match PlaySinges match play pits Player A against Player B, hole after hole. If Player A scores a 4 on the fi rst hole while Player B records a 5, Player A wins the hole. Ties are called “halves”; a match that is all square (or tied) after 18 holes continues until there is a winner.

Fourball Match PlayIn Fourballs, each side consists of two players. Each player plays his or her own ball throughout the round. On each hole, the low ball of the two players serves as that side’s score. For example, on the fi rst hole for Team A, Player 1 scores a 4 and Player 2 scores a 5, so the team score is 4. If Team A gets a 4 while Team B scores 5, the Team A wins the hole.

Foursomes Match PlayFoursomes match play is one of the best-known forms of match play.

p

21

It’s not very common as a format used among friends during a casual round of golf, however. Foursomes pits 2-person teams against each other, with each team playing one ball, alternate shot. Example: Player A and Player B are partners. On the fi rst hole, A tees off; B plays the second shot; A plays the third shot; and so on until the ball is holed. The lower of the two teams’ scores win the hole.Handicap allowances can be applied for the various Four Ball competitions.
