January 2012 Redundancy 2012 On the 17 January 2012 the teacher unions met with Department of Education Officials and representatives of the Education and Library Boards and the CCMS. The Department has advised the employing authorities to make enhanced ‘severance payments’ in instances where teachers have their employment terminated on the grounds of redundancy. The Department has made available additional resources to allow for redundancy compensation beyond the existing statutory 30 weeks redundancy payments. The employing authorities are intending to give teachers made redundant a compensation payment that is three times the statutory redundancy payment. The maximum amount of compensation will be fixed at 90 weeks – three times the amount of the maximum statutory compensation of 30 weeks available under the regulations. Redundancy payments For each complete year of continuous service, up to a maximum of 20, employees are entitled to: Up to the age of 21 — 0.5 weeks pay for each completed year of service 22-40 years of age — 1 weeks pay for each completed year of service 41+ years of age — 1.5 weeks pay for each completed year of service For example, in a case where a teacher being made compulsory redundant or accessing a voluntary redundancy opportunity – would have received 25 weeks salary as redundancy compensation they will have received an enhanced ‘severance payment’ of an extra 50 weeks salary making a total of 75 weeks salary as compensation. If NASUWT members are interested in taking Voluntary Redundancy or Transfer Redundancy they should make contact with their school Principal at the earliest opportunity. It is the intention of the Department of Education and Employers to seek agreements with NORTHERN IRELAND

It is the intention of the Department of Education and Employers to seek agreements with teachers to cease employment on 31 August 2012 before the 31 March to relieve pressure on the education budget 2012/2013.

Please note:   All schools are obliged to contact the NASUWT if they are considering making redundancies on 31 August 2012.  If school reps are aware there have been redundancies announced and have not received notification from the NASUWT please contact the NASUWT N.I. Centre.  The NASUWT is aware that some schools have failed to contact the NASUWT and are embarking on practice outside the procedure whilst seeking to recruit new members of staff.
