12 Steps to a Customer-Focused Cultureby Bill Hogg

More and more organizations are rec-ognizing just how important a deliber-ate and intentional customer-focused culture is, but few companies do it well.

Here are 12 simple steps to ensure your organization is maximizing this impor-tant competitive advantage:

1. Lead By Example: Leaders set the tone and direction. Make customer service a key priority. Make sure your own behav-iours are ones you want modeled by your team.

2. Involve Your Customers: No one knows what your customers want bet-ter than your customers. If you ask them with genuine interest, they will tell you.

3. Engage Your Team: Your team un-derstands your customers and how to deliver the service they want. Include them in gathering customer informa-tion, setting standards and designing processes.

4. Set Expectations: Publish your ser-vice standards so your team and cus-tomers are clear on expectations. You can never exceed expectations if you don’t set them.

5. Solicit Feedback: Be a good listener. Make it easy for customers and your team to provide ongoing feedback about how to improve the service ex-perience—both good and bad. Follow up and ask open-ended questions.

6. Be Customer-Focused: Put your customer needs ahead of your own. Design your processes and procedures with your customer in mind.

7. Provide Tools: Develop tools and processes that help your team under-stand the customer and equip them to deliver a consistent customer experi-ence.

8. Empower Your Team: No one turns an unhappy customer into a fan faster or better than a team member empowered to instantly fix the situation. Provide training and guidelines —then trust them to make the right decision.

9. Measure What You Want Done: Cre-ate a balanced performance scorecard that measures financial, productivity and cus-tomer experience. What gets measured gets done.

10. Recognize Performance: Establish a program to nurture and recognize out-standing performance. Make sure both customers and team members are encour-aged to participate. Continuous improve-ment needs reinforcement. An ongoing recognition program keeps customer ser-vice in focus.

11. Say Thank You: Thank your team for their hard work. Thank your customers for their business, their feedback and their complaints. Remember, without them you have no business.

12. Have Fun: Remember—you chose to be in a customer service business. Choose your attitude and enjoy the opportunity to make a positive impact on someone’s day. Your attitude will rub off on your team and your customers.

“We’re going to have a brand new board coming in to play and a lot of new tal-

Member FocusPregnancy Care CenterInspiring Teens to Live An Epic Life! by Stacy Lange

Epic is a sexual health program promot-ing abstinence and is one of the programs of your local Pregnancy Care Center. Your Pregnancy Care Center is a faith based organization, founded over 27 years ago by a group of citizens concerned about teen pregnancy and people facing unex-pected pregnancies in Josephine County. Their goal was to prevent both in the most compassionate way possible through in-dividual care. For the last three years, I have been part of the team, privileged to present Epic to area students.

Epic is a 3-5 day interactive presentation that empowers students at local middle and high schools to use critical thinking strategies to make healthy choices about sex, relationships, and abstinence. Epic meets standards set by the state of Ore-gon for human sexuality curriculum.

Epic is designed to inspire a shift in per-

spective and empowering students with strategies for success. Epic means heroic, lasting, meaningful, and im-pactful; and the goal is for students to leave our presentation with hearts set on an epic life and a plan to achieve it. That plan includes valuing their lives and the lives of those around them, an understanding of how early sexual activity can get in the way of reaching their dreams, and tools to maintain boundaries.

Three key elements of Epic are: Goal Setting, Critical Thinking, and Char-acter Development. Epic is a series of seven sections. For example, ‘Dreams, Hopes, Goals’ inspires students to take an active role in their lives and short and long term goals. Our licensed nurs-ing staff presents the medically accu-rate information on the physical risks of sexual activity, transmission, and prevention, promoting sexual absti-nence as the safest method of preven-tion of STDs and pregnancy, affirming the Center for Disease Control. Other sections examine influences, assess the realistic benefits and risks of sexual ac-tivity, including physical, social, and emotional factors, positive self-image, healthy and unhealthy relationship dy-namics, and characteristics of a healthy marriage. Additionally, students are equipped with refusal skills they can transfer to other potentially risky ac-tivities.

“I was impacted most by risks of sexual

activity because it can ruin your life goals.” Student IVHS

“It is never too late. I’ve had a lot taken from me and I’m ready for a change.” Stu-dent GPHS

“Some of my friends were thinking of hav-ing sex, but I think they decided to wait be-cause of you guys.” Student North Middle School

Epic is provided free of charge to all area public and private schools, who in recent years have been struggling with budget cuts. The program is supported by dona-tions made to the Pregnancy Care Cen-ter and costs nearly $45,000 each year. To make a donation, call 541-479-6264 or visit gppregnancy.com.

Investing ToImprove ServiceTo ensure customers have the safe, reli-able electricity they need, Pacific Power continues to make targeted long-term investments in its system. The system investments work to ensure capacity, improve equipment performance and maintain or restore service when elec-tricity needs to be rerouted.

In 2015, transformer capacity was added to the Pacific Power substation near Boardman. This important proj-ect provides for additional irrigation pumps and enhances the overall reli-ability of the regional transmission grid that delivers electricity to homes and businesses.

Construction will begin this year to in-stall an additional 230-kilovolt circuit

breaker at the utility’s Pilot Butte substa-tion near Bend. The new equipment im-proves reliability and operational flex-ibility in the area and is expected to be in service by late 2016.

Josephine County is very fortunate to have two excellent general aviation air-ports serving the Grants Pass and Cave Junction communities. Integral to every successful community in America is a vi-brant and healthy airport. Aviation acts as a magnet attracting businesses and busi-ness travelers, facilitating commerce and enabling efficient expansion into new ter-ritories.

Airports are home to many special events of interest to the general public, and the airports at Grants Pass and Illinois Val-ley are no exception. Every Labor Day Weekend there is an Airport Day Open House at the Grants Pass Airport, and in early June the Illinois Valley Airport is host to the Moon Tree Run and Fire-fighter Fair.

Dutch Bros, Rogue Valley Door, Pacific Aviation NW, PacJet Charter and a dozen other companies call Grants Pass Airport their aviation home-base. With almost 220 aircraft based at GP, and another 30 or more at the IV Airport, aviation plays an ever-increasing role in the successful business operations of Josephine County.
