Dame Myra Hess Memorial ConcertsJoin WFMT each Wednesday for the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts, live from Preston Bradley

Hall in the Chicago Cultural Center. Enjoy solo recitals and ensemble performances by emerging classical artists from around the world, produced by the International Music Foundation. Featured artists this month include violinist Yun-Ting Lee and and collabora-tive pianist Younjung Cha; Young Steinway Artist award-winning pianist Kimberly Han; saxophonist Hyoung-Ryoul Kim and pianist Shin-Young Park; and pianist George X. Fu.

Performances take place beneath the world’s largest Tiffany-domed ceiling, part of a landmark building

that originally housed the Chicago Public Library. The series is named for British pianist Myra Hess, who organized free lunchtime concerts for Londoners during World War II, in the years of nightly air raids.

WTTW and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events present a free screening and discussion of VOCES: ADIOS AMOR: The Search for Maria Moreno.

In this film, the discovery of lost photographs sparks the search for a hero that history forgot: Maria Moreno, a migrant mother driven to speak out by the deprivation being experienced by her 12 children. Years before Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta launched the United Farm Workers, Maria used the only weapon she had - her voice - and became an outspoken leader in an era when wom-en were relegated to the background. The first farm worker woman in America to be hired as a union organizer, Maria’s story was silenced and her legacy buried…until now.

The screening will be followed by a panel dis-cussion. The film airs on WTTW11 and wttw.com on Friday, September 27 at 10:00 pm.

From Lyric Opera: Bellini’s NormaThe first of six performances from the 2016-17 season of Lyric Opera of Chicago is one that evokes ancient Rome and ancient Gaul in a score of beautifully lyrical bel-canto music. The title role of Norma is an exceedingly demanding one, since the title character is onstage for almost the entire duration of the work. Lyric’s Norma was soprano Sondra Radvanovsky; reviews after the opening night singled out both her vocal splendor and her interpretation. Norma is a pagan priestess sworn to chastity – who has, however, embarked on an affair with the Roman governor and had two children by him. The second pivotal character is Adalgisa (Elizabeth DeShong, also critically acclaimed), another priestess and Norma’s rival in love. The Norma-Adalgisa duet Mira, oh Norma is a highlight of the score. Russell Thomas portrays Pollione, the Roman governor-philanderer, and Andrea Silvestrelli sings the role of the priest Oroveso, Norma’s father. Riccardo Frizza conducts.

Powerful Rachmaninoff from the Chicago SymphonySergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 1 in D Minor is relatively rarely performed. Its premiere, in St. Petersburg in 1897, was an abysmal failure that drove the composer into a bout with depression; the score was abandoned for many years, not to be revived until 1945. In the years since, it’s taken a somewhat more prominent place on symphony orchestra programs. Denmark’s Thomas Sondergard, principal conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, brought it to Chicago as part of a program that contains a much better-known example of Russian Romanticism, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, played by the Ukrainian-Australian virtuoso Alexander Gavrylyuk. Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 emerged about a decade later; its premiere was also in St. Petersburg, in 1908 with the composer conducting. Its unusual length led conductors for many years to impose cuts, but that practice has died out, and the work is now programmed in its entirety. It comes up on a broadcast concert to be led by Marin Alsop, one from earlier this year that features Hilary Hahn as the soloist in Sibelius’s Violin Concerto.

Live from Grant Park: Amy Beach, Rimsky-Korsakov, Morton GouldConductor Carlos Kalmar and the Grant Park Music Festival have titled this concert Flight of the Bumblebee, but that famous tune is only a tiny part of what will be performed at Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park and broadcast live over WFMT. Amy Beach’s Variations on Balkan Themes was originally written for piano in 1904. The piece was inspired by a revolt in Macedonia against the rule of the Ottoman Empire. Visiting not long after the revolt was suppressed, a missionary friend of the composer’s brought back four folksongs from the Balkan region, which are the basis of the music. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan is based on a fairy-tale poem by Alexander Pushkin. The rather fantastical plot has the hero – actually the Tsar’s son – magically turned into a bumblebee at one poin; hence, “The Flight of the Bumblebee.” But the instrumental suite has lots of other delightful music, too. Finally, Kalmar and the orchestra perform Cowboy Rhapsody, a work by American composer-conductor-pianist Morton Gould that exists in two versions: orchestra and band. It quotes a number of familiar cowboy-related tunes, including “Home on the Range” and “Old Paint.” Dave Schwan hosts the live broadcast.

From Carnegie Hall: French Baroque Film MusicThe 1991 French movie Tous les Matins du Monde portrays the viola da gamba artist and composer Marin Marais recalling a legendary gamba performer known only as Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe. The music of both composers is featured prominently in the soundtrack, performed by a gamba artist of today, Jordi Savall. During the 2018-19 season at Carnegie Hall, Savall brought his ensemble Le Concert des Nations to play not only works by Sainte-Colombe and Marais, but also scores by a number of their colleagues at the elegant courts of Louis XIV and Louis XV, including Rameau, Lully, Leclair, and Couperin le Grand.


Grant Park Music Festival Finale: Mahler’s ResurrectionArguably Gustav Mahler’s most familiar work, a favorite with audiences and performers, is his Symphony No. 2 in C Minor, subtitled Resurrection. Composed between 1888 and 1894, it was premiered in Berlin in 1895 and, unlike some later Mahler works, was well received, bringing increased attention to this revolutionary young composer-conductor. A long musical musing on death and the possibility of an afterlife, the symphony is completely instrumental for its first three movements, the first one supposed to represent a funeral march. A vocal soloist comes in for movement four, a setting of a text from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, “Urlicht (Primal Light).” (This is one of four Mahler symphonies directly connected to the Wunderhorn collection of folk poetry, which he also set as songs.) The finale, an expression of hope and faith, brings in a second vocal soloist and a chorus. The text is partly Mahler’s own and partly drawn from a poem titled The Resurrection by Freidrich Gottlieb Klopstock. Carlos Kalmar will conduct the Resurrection Symphony for the final weekend of the 2019 Grant Park Music Festival, with the orchestra and its chorus joined by two alumnae of the Ryan Opera Center, soprano Amanda Majesti and mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges.

Backyard Mozart: The Magic Flute from Lyric OperaIt won’t of course be visible on the radio, but the new production of The Magic Flute that Lyric Opera unveiled in the 2016-17 season sets the performance as a kids’ summer show, with neighboring parents as the audience and a cast of fairy-tale characters conjured up from – perhaps the young people’s imaginations? This was a different and, to some, startling take on Mozart, but it didn’t affect the performance of the music. (The work was sung in the original German.) Soprano Kathryn Lewek won special critical attention for her portrayal of the Queen of the Night; her opposite number, the wise Sarastro, was sung by Christof Fischesser. Soprano Christiane Karg and tenor Matthew Polenzani were the lovers, Pamina and Tamino, who must endure a variety of trials before they can marry. As for the comic bird-catcher Papageno, and his beloved Papagena, they were portrayed by Adam Plachetka and Diana Newman, with Rory Macdonald conducting.

The New York Philharmonic This WeekWFMT resumes broadcasts of the weekly series hosted by Alec Baldwin, featuring current concerts plus retrospectives from the orchestra’s vast archives. Our first broadcast has for its main theme Heroes and Anti-Heroes in Strauss. Philharmonic soloists Frank Huang (violin), Cynthia Phelps (viola), and Carter Brey (cello) are featured in Don Quixote and Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) conducted respectively by Bernard Haitink and Alan Gilbert. Between these, we hear Phelps again, by herself, in Threaded Madrigals by British-American composer Oscar Bettison, a professor at Baltimore’s Peabody Institute. Bettison says he called his original sketches for this piece madrigals, then he put them together – or, threaded them. His aim, he says, was to exploit the special sound of the viola – which, for him, has “a certain guileless melancholy.” Following in this new Philharmonic sequence will be Lenny’s Playlists, Part 1, a program mostly conducted by Leonard Bernstein of pieces particularly associated with him, including the Candide Overture, Chichester Psalms, a portion of Four Saints in Three Acts by Virgil Thomson, and a movement from William Russo’s Symphony No. 2, subtitled Titans.

More Bel Canto from Lyric OperaLyric’s 2016-17 season featured two major bel-canto tragedies of the early 19th century: Norma and Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. Like Norma, Lucia puts a special and challenging spotlight on the soprano who portrays the title role. Lucia is inveigled into a forced marriage that will rescue her brother from bankruptcy and disgrace, but – maddened by having been forced to renounce her true love – she kills her new husband and sings of her grief in an extended mad scene that holds her horrified wedding guests mesmerized (to say nothing of the audience). The highly acclaimed soprano Albina Shagimuratova portrays Lucia with Piotr Beczala as her lover, Edgardo, and Quinn Kelsey as her brother, Enrico. Enrique Mazzola is the conductor.

From Carnegie Hall: Mozart and Berg from the Mahler Chamber OrchestraServing as both soloist and conductor, Mitsuko Uchida joined the Mahler Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie Hall this past season to perform Mozart’s piano concertos K. 459 and K. 466. In between, the musicians performed Three Pieces from the Lyric Suite, arranged for string orchestra by composer Alban Berg from his six-movement work for string quartet. The dedication was to fellow composer Alexander von Zemlinsky, since Berg quoted from Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony. However, recent research has uncovered a kind of private dedication for the piece: to a woman with whom Berg was secretly in love. The movements he chose to orchestrate are perhaps revelatory: they’re titled “Andante Amoroso,” “Allegro Misterioso—Trio Estatico,” and “Adagio Appassionato.” Emotions aside, the Lyric Suite and its follow-up arrangement were among the first works Berg wrote following all the rules for serial (12-tone) composition devised by his teacher, Arnold Schoenberg.

Lyric’s Don Quichotte Starring Ferruccio FurlanettoMassenet’s Don Quichotte (Don Quixote) is not so well known as his Manon or Thaïs, but a number of operatic basses, including the legendary Feodor Chaliapin, have had special affection for the title role. A great operatic bass of our time, Ferruccio Furlanetto, shares this partiality; he came to Lyric to perform it during the 2016-17 season. With Sir Andrew Davis conducting, we hear him joined by baritone Nicola Alaimo as the faithful servant Sancho Panza andn mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine as Dulcinea – each fond of the Don in their own ways, yet vastly more realistic and practical than the “knight of the woeful countenance” created and immortalized by Miguel Cervantes. Don Quixote has been an inspiration for musicians, writers, and painters since the early 17th century.
