KNOW OUR FOUNDER MELVIN JONES We are now living in an of scientific advancement and have seen man achieving Some thing which our fore fathers never thought of. All the same, when we tack a closer look at our Communities, we are disappointed to see that they remain torn by hunger, disease, illiteracy, mal- nutrition, galloping in population. Thus the need to bring succour to the suffering is ever growing. The lions movement has been an answer to these problems in a substantial measure, and the man who founded this mighty organization in none other than Melvin jones. His father; John Calvin Jones was a captain in U.S Army, and hence his childhood Memories were filled with horr ors of was and its devastation. As he grew up took a vow to strive for peace and goodwill among men. He was born in 1879in Fort Thomas. At 21 he went to Chicago and entered into insurance business and gradually founded Company of his o wn. Melvin Jones Insurance Agency, which he gave up after some years to devote all attention to Lions work and succeeded in founding Lions Internationa l in 1917at the close of the first World War. He was also recognized as a leader outside the Association. One of his greatest honours was that he represented Lions International in 1945, as a Consultant at the United Nations Organisations. Melvin jones believed in the concept of the equality of men and bequeathed to mankind a modernized version of all ancient religious which has shaped the history of man’s spirit. The constant support and source of inspiration was drawn by Melvin Jones from his wife Rose Freeman. He lived a fruitful 82 years of his life until death on 1 st June 1961. His wife predeceased him in jun 1959. The world can never forget this great man.

Helen Keller

Angle of the Blind

Helen Killer was born in Tuscumboia, Alabama on june 27. 1880. Her infancy was normal unit

contracted meningitis at the age of age of 19 month. The disease rendered her both deaf and blind. The

next years were hellish for her family as they new of on way to reach through her double disabilities to

communicate with her.

Alexander graham bell, the inventor of telephone was also a teacher of the deaf. When he met

her, he sensed her innate intelligence and suggested family family to hire a young woman Anne Sullivan

as tutor who herself was partially blind. She devised a method of making hand signs, into Keller’s palm.

By this method, young keller learned to communicate brilliantly, Mark Twain befriended her and called

her ‘The Miracle Worker’. 

Hellen Keller was the first deaf abd blind person to graduate from the college. She wrote her

autobiography entitled. The Story of my life, in order answer endless curiosity of people across the

globe.

Throughout her life she world meet many famous people including every president who served

in her lifetime and have many experiences. She spent much of her on lecture circuit and became a

champion for the blind. She visited 1925 Lions International Convention cedar Point. Ohio USA June 30,

1925 and knocked upon out door as an opportunity to join the crusade against darkness in followingwords.

“The American foundation for the Blind is only four years old. It grew out of the imperative

needs of the blind, and was called into existence by the sightless themselves. It is national and

International in scope and importance. It represents the best and most enlightened through on our

subject that lias been reached so far. Its object is to make the lives of the blind more worthwhile

everywhere by increasing their economic value and giving them the joy of normal activity.

The opportunity I bring to you. Lions, to foster and sponsor the work of the American

foundation for the blind. Will you not help me hasten the day when there shall be not preventable

blindness, no little deaf, blind child untaught, O blind man or woman unaided? I appeal to you Lions, You

who have your sight, your hearing, you who are strong and brave and kind, will you not constitute

yourselves knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness?” The Gold Medal of the National Institute of social sciences was conferred upon her in 1902. In

1953 she was honored at the Sorbonne in paris, France’s highest honor. In 1955 she won an Academy

Award for her documentary. “Helen Keller in her Story” and rece ived an honorary degree from Harvard.

Helen Made her last public appearance in 1961 at a Lions Club meeting in Washington. She

received a Lions’ humanitarian award and effusively thanked the Lions for their decades of steller

service to the blind. She then slowly ambled off the stage, as Lions stood and showered her with

thunderous applause one final time

In 1964 she was given the united states highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of 

Freedom by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Helen Keller died at the age of eighty-eight on June 1, 1968.

OUR EMBLEM

The current Lion emblem was adopted in the 1919 convention. Today Lion throughout the world

are recognized by it. It cosmists of a gold letter “L” on a circular purple (or blue) field. Borderingthis is a circular gold area with two Lion profiles facing away from the center. The word “Lions”

appears at the top and “International” at the bottom. The Lions face both past and future –  showing both pride of heritage and confidence in the future. Always wear your Lionsemblem pin

 proudly. And since it’s a registered trademark in most countries, remember it may never be used

for commercial or fundraising purpose without prior permission from the legal division of 

International headquarters.

OFFICAL COLOURS

The royal colors of purple and gold were selected as the official colors when the association was

organized in 1917. Purple stands for loyalty to friends. And for integrity of mind and heart. Gold

symbolizes sincerity of purpose, liberality in judgment, purity in life, and generosity in mind,

heart and purse to those in need.

MISSION STATEMENT

To create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by

providing voluntary service through community involvement and international co-operation.

THE BASIS OF MEMBERSHIP

Any male or female person of legal majority good moral character and good reputation in his

community may be granted Membership in a duly authorized Lions Club. Membership is
