PRESIDENT’S REPORT

This was a quieter season for Melville with a little less success on field than we are accustomed to, however there were many achievements to be very proud of. Congratulations to the Womens A Grade , T/20 Winners this season, also our Colts with a huge result winning the competition for the First time in nearly twenty years. A great effort from a young team and great coaching from Liam Duffield. 2nd Grade, 4th Grade and both Women’s teams also played in finals. A big achievement in itself.

Again Coaching continued to be a focus of the club with Brad Thompson, Jenny Wallace, Greg Turner and Junior Coaches. A new initiative from Australian Cricketers Association provided Drew Porter and Luke Towers the opportunity to bring specialist coaching to the Club. A very successful program. This season saw a strong Club atmosphere, more players becoming involved in running the Club at all levels, especially with Management Committee and Social functions. Melville obviously has a strong playing and social culture and is a good place to play cricket. Changes were made to the traditional President’s Medal. Firstly a name change, now called the Adam Voges Medal, in recognition of all Adam has achieved and the extremely high regard in which he is held by everyone at the Melville Club. To complement the Men’s and Women’s awards a new category was introduced for Junior best player. The Adam Voges Medal winner for best Men’s player in the Club was won by Tom Smith. Niamh Walsh took out the Women’s medal and Kiale O’Brien became the first winner of the Junior Adam Voges Medal. Curator Chris Lovelock continues to impress with his work ethic and approachable nature. His enthusiasm is obvious and is something recognised by everyone at Melville. With outside expert advice and extra work on the wickets in the off season we are gradually moving back towards a goal of having some of the best wickets in the competition. Tom Scollay again looked after Club finances in a tough year for the Club. We have previously relied on Tompkins Park for a large part of our income and while this is still important a decline in the Commercial world has led to smaller dividends and the need to find other sources of income. A small increase in WACA and Cricket Australia grants has helped but the main improvement came when Joe Mahoney took on the Sponsorship manager role and has doubled our income from this source. Members need to ensure sponsors receive value for their input. Many thanks to all our Sponsors for their assistance, a number of whom attend matches and social functions and have become part of our Club. The City of Melville plans to restructure Tompkins Park appear to have stalled and there has been no information on this for many months. The Committee will update members when and if anything happens. Our Canteen again finished with a small profit, exactly as planned. Thanks to all who helped here. This is a difficult job and hard to see where our canteen is heading with new volunteers needed and an ageing room to work from.

At the time of writing we are collating information for our Yearbook. In line with modern thinking it will be available on-line but there should still be a few printed copies available. Congratulations to the many players selected to play at higher levels. We wish them all the best in their efforts. Thank you to all Players, Coaches, Committee members and everyone who keeps the Club running at a high level. A few players have retired this season and a few finished their careers at State level or as Team Captains. Their contributions to Melville have been huge and we thank them all for their input over the seasons. I will not be seeking re-election as MCC President. I wish everyone well and look forward to a bright future for Melville. Another hectic but enjoyable season. Simon Towers

PREMIER CRICKET HEAD COACH REPORT It is Easter Saturday 2016. Day one of the WACA Competition’s Grand Finals and it is raining. Raining a lot. I think about how different the moods would be in the change-rooms of the teams that finished higher on the ladder compared to the mood in the change-rooms of the teams that finished lower on the ladder and how the rain (something completely out of anyone’s control) could have a massive impact on the outcomes of these Grand Finals. One team is closer to winning a premiership and the other could see hopes and chances of winning a premiership disappearing with every minute that passes with no play. This kind of reflects the season the First Grade team had for 2015/2016. The fact that we didn’t have any of the 4 senior teams playing in the Grand Final this season is somewhat compensated for by the Colts Team winning a premiership for the first time in over 25 years, the Second Grade making the semi-finals and the 4th Grade playing finals.

Overall, the club had a reasonable but not spectacular season. The First Grade missed the finals for the second time in around 15 years, finishing 9th on the ladder which I do not think is a true reflection of the season the First Grade team had. The First Grade team could have finished a lot higher on the ladder. The Seconds improved dramatically to make the Semi-Finals while the Third’s struggled and finished last on the ladder. The Fourth Grade had an up and down season but did well to make the finals. Again, our numbers at training were above expectation, the quality of our training sessions was very high and we had an influx of new players to the club that each in their own way, contributed to the club’s success.

A number of First Grade players reached significant milestones for the club during the season. Drew Porter played his 200th First Grade game and Ryan James played his 100th First Grade game in a season that will likely be Jamesy’s last as he pursues the surf to satisfy his weekend recreational activities. Good luck Jamesy and thanks for your efforts, you have been a great player for the club and we would welcome you back with open arms should the surf not be happening! Luke Towers passed 5,000 First Grade runs while Mark Turner had an outstanding season taking out the WACA’s First Grade bowling aggregate and average awards with 44 wickets at an outstanding average of 12.39. Mark also finished runner up in the Olly Cooley Medal by one vote – a very significant achievement and recognition of his great season. Congratulations to Tom Smith who was awarded with Melville’s Adam Voges’ Medal (previously the President’s Medal) and also the Alan Mackley Medal for the best player in Fourth Grade as voted by the Umpires.

There were a number of players that played the highest grade they have ever played at the club in their careers thus far. Luke Benaquista and Peter Rowe both made their First Grade debuts against a strong Scarborough bowling attack and performed extremely well. James Holt had an excellent season opening the batting in Second Grade and showed that he will be an important player for the club in the future. Blake Reed impressed in his first season at the club with both bat and ball along with his work ethic, knowledge of the game, maturity and attitude. I hope Richie Hodgson enjoyed being at the club as much as we enjoyed having him at the club and Hodgo’s contribution to how well the Seconds performed was no surprise to me.

Bryce Jackson had a sensational finish to the season, being promoted from the Under 17’s to play finals in Second Grade and also win the Man of the Match Award in the Colt’s Premiership winning team. Well done Bryce. The prospect of having brothers Mitch and Bryce playing senior cricket together at Melville next season is very exciting.

Page 10: MELVILLE CRICKET CLUB (INC) ANNUAL REPORT AND YEAR … · MELVILLE CRICKET CLUB (INC) ANNUAL REPORT AND YEAR BOOK 2015/2016 Womens A Grade T/20 Premiers 2015/2016 Colts Premiers 2015/2016

Young players such as Myles Keyt, Liam Duffield, Fraser Hay, Brad Turner (winner of the Jan & Barry McMahon Consistency Award), Clarry Bilston, Andrew Needham and Adam Shaw (captain of the Colts Premiership team) continue to develop well. Kiale O’Brien had an outstanding season winning a number of WACA junior awards, played quite a few senior games this season and I’m sure he will add to that tally of senior games next season. Campbell Smith, Matt Albanis, Matt Davis, David Pietrangeli, Joel Newton, Cameron Beath and Alex Cowan all showed during the season that they have a lot to offer the club in the future. Josiah Smith enjoyed being injury free for most of the season and performed very well while Tom Kerr-Sheppard’s return from a long term injury went very well and I’m sure TK will be looking forward to a stellar season next season.

The First Grade top and middle order were a lot more consistent than last season with most players passing or getting close to the 400 run mark. Luke Towers (612 @ 38.25), Matt Wiley (478 @ 34.14), Blake Reed (399 @ 30.69), Fraser Hay (417 @ 29.79), Tom Scollay (469 @ 29.31) and Drew Porter (368 @ 26.29) were our top 6 batters for most of the season and while these numbers are very solid, I’m sure that each of these players will reflect on the season and think “if I had of made 1 or 2 more bigger scores, those numbers go from solid to impressive”. Something to work on for next season.

Adam Voges – enough said!!!!!! What an absolute legend and Adam’s achievements over the last few years should provide motivation for every person at this club. He sets a magnificent example from wherever he is playing and whoever he is playing for, whether it be Melville, Middlesex, Perth Scorchers, Western Warriors or Australia. Good luck to V with the upcoming Australian fixtures.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Simon Towers for his wonderful and profound work during his time as President of the club. Simon has done an outstanding job on so many levels to grow and develop this Premier Cricket Club to one of the best in Western Australia and I have appreciated all he has done for the club. I know I’m not alone with these thoughts.

To my Assistant Coaches in Michael Johnston and Ben Lillis, a sincere thank you to you guys for the passion, knowledge and intensity you bring to the roles you perform. Thanks to the Committee for their continued support and the work they do to keep the club successful. Greg Turner continues to do a great job in his role while Peter Van-Helden, who has one of the toughest jobs around as Net Captain, continues to keep everyone happy (well mostly) week in and week out – great job Pete! Thanks to Chris the curator for his efforts with the wickets and look forward to a few more centre wicket practice sessions next season.

I would like to thank all the volunteers that give up their time to help and do the little things that make this club what it is.

I believe that we have a great environment at the club that is built on a strong work ethic, a commitment to high standards on and off the field and the courage to challenge each other - all fuelled by the desire to win and be successful. Our “brand of cricket” and canvasses will be re-energised for next season and I look forward to the pre-season commencing for the 2016/2017 season.

Brad Thompson MCC – HEAD COACH

FIRST GRADE It’s fair to say that the First grade season didn’t go as well as we had hoped. While there were times throughout the season that I genuinely thought we could beat anyone in the competition we just didn’t win the key moments of matches and as a result didn’t have the success that we desire and almost expect. With such a talented group of cricketers, it was disappointing to finish the season in 9th position while also missing out on the semi-finals in both the T20 and One-day competitions.

That being said there were plenty of highs and some outstanding individual performances throughout the season. Mark Turner was incredible with the ball and finished as not only Melville’s leading wicket taker but also the leading wicket taker for the whole competition with 44 wickets. Some of his highlights included 5/29 vs Fremantle (Rd 1),

5/36 vs South Perth (Rd 3), 6/13 vs Subi-Floreat (Rd 4), 6/49 vs Gosnells (Rd 5) & 8/47 vs Scarborough (Rd 14). To cap his phenomenal season Mark finished equal second in the Olly Cooley medal and won Melville’s cricketer of the year which shows just how good he was.

Luke Towers again lead the way as our best batsman after a switch from his familiar position of opening to first drop. After a slow start to the season, Lukey turned it on in round 6 against Wanneroo where he batted all day for 149 and followed it up in round 8 against Claremont with another epic innings of 119. In the final match of the season he fell agonisingly short of a third hundred of the year, caught at mid-on for 98 to finish the season with 612 runs @ 38.25.

While Drew Porter didn’t get the rewards with the ball that he deserved he remained the leader of our attack and someone that could always be relied upon to start us off well with the ball. It was brilliant to see Ports rewarded with selection for a WA XI against the Indian team at the WACA where he showed his class with figures of 5/37 including the massive wicket of the world’s best one day batsman, Virat Kohli. Ports was also extremely consistent in the middle order and remains the best slips fieldsman in the competition.

Matthew Wiley continues to get better each year and was extremely consistent behind the stumps and with the bat again this season. He has become an extremely reliable and important member of our side. His hundred against a high quality Willetton attack was one of the best innings of the season and showed everyone how good he is. Hopefully he continues to improve for many seasons to come.

Blake Reed was an exceptional addition to the club and offered a lot both on and off the field. He brought consistency and grit to our top order and was extremely reliable with the ball while also picking up crucial wickets. Blake has a very bright future ahead of him and with maturity well beyond his years, will hopefully play at a higher level in the near future.

Fraser Hay played one of the most exciting and unbelievable innings I have ever witnessed with 114 not out off 68 balls (including 9 sixes) against South Perth in round 3. While he finished the season with a healthy 417 runs it could have been many more with 6 consecutive scores between 32 & 52. No doubt he will be turning those starts into big scores in the coming seasons and hopefully will be pushing for higher honours with WA as he is easily one of the best young batsman in WA.

Myles Keyt, Liam Duffield & Matt Bowdler all played crucial roles within the team and starred at different points in the season. While Keyta wasn’t able to stay fit all season he still picked up regular wickets and finished as our second leading wicket taker with 15 wickets at an impressive average of 20.67. The big fella worked extremely hard on his game in the off-season and I am confident he will become a dominant first grade all-rounder in the not too distant future.

Page 12: MELVILLE CRICKET CLUB (INC) ANNUAL REPORT AND YEAR … · MELVILLE CRICKET CLUB (INC) ANNUAL REPORT AND YEAR BOOK 2015/2016 Womens A Grade T/20 Premiers 2015/2016 Colts Premiers 2015/2016

With only 3 first grade appearances before this season, Liam Duffield become a consistent member of our side and gained in confidence throughout the season. He became extremely disciplined with his areas and also had a knack of taking wickets when we needed them. No doubt Liam will continue to push the senior bowlers and soon be a leader of our attack.

Matt Bowdler, one of the veterans of our side played an underrated but extremely important role in our side. Batting at number 7 he often guided the tail through some tricky times and scored important lower order runs for us. If he hadn’t been involved in so many mix ups (run out 4 times in 15 innings) he would have contributed even more lower order runs. Bowds was also exceptional in the field and really lifts us with his energy and enthusiasm when we need it.

It was extremely exciting to see some good young players make their debuts during the season. Luke Benaquista and Peter Rowe both made their debuts in round 14 against Scarborough and on a tough wicket neither looked out of their depth. Both Rowe and Bena were able to spend time in the middle and gained a lot of experience by facing some first-class bowlers. With both spending the winter playing in the UK, I really look forward to watching them improve and push for more regular First grade appearances.

Finally to our retiring Leggie. Ryan James has been an invaluable member of our side since 2006 and will be very tough to replace. Hopefully the retirement is short lived and we see him in his MCC baggy cap again in the near future. While he didn’t bowl as many overs this season as he has in previous years, he always gave the team confidence when he had the ball in his hand. If the seamers hadn’t got an early breakthrough it was a real luxury as a captain to be able to throw the ball to Rysie and know he would almost always have an immediate impact. Batsman very rarely got the better of him and it’s not just his bowling that going to be sorely missed but also his attitude & competitiveness that would always lift the group.

Looking back on the results of the season hurts. We simply weren’t good enough when it counted. I do still strongly believe that we have a group of players capable of dominating the competition and hope that everyone is hungry to improve and make up for this seasons performances. We will learn from our experiences this season and with more experience under our belt, we will hopefully stand up and win the crucial moments in games that eventually lead to winning important matches instead of losing them.

Thanks to Thomo for his efforts and support again this season. I know that he is as determined as I am to turn things around next season. Thanks to everyone who has ntributed to the club throughout the year and allowed us as players to go out and play. Thanks to Rangith, Pat Terry & Jan Hay for their efforts in the canteen. Thanks to Simon Towers, Roger Wiley and the committee for their tireless efforts to keep the club running so smoothly. Well done to Doig who really turned the second grade this season and after finishing bottom last season almost made the grand final. Also well done to Joe and Boyley for their efforts as captains this year. Hopefully the club as a whole will continue to improve and have more success next season.

It is always a pleasure captaining a group of guys that I have a lot of respect for and really enjoy being around. I aim to lift my own performances and as a result hope to lead by example next season. I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead and am confident that with the right attitude and work ethic we will have the success that we desire.

SECOND GRADE Another season done and dusted!! I’m not entirely sure but I think it’s close to my 25th season with Melville seniors and it was one of my most rewarding. This year was my first full season as Captain, which was a great honour and resulted in less overs bowled and my body pulling up well after most games!

With the inclusion of a few new players and the existing younger players having another season under their belts we ended the season in 4th position. After beating Scarborough in the Semi Final we then lost to the eventual winners in Willetton in the Prelim Final.

As much as it’s disappointing to lose there are always positives to come out of every season. We had 5 players with exposure to A grade who had good seasons in 2’s. Brad Turner winning the batting awards with 503 @ avg of 38, Peter Rowe who played his first full season of 2nd grade (321 runs, 19 wkts) as did Luke Benaquista who had a really consistent season opening the batting and bowling in most games (447 runs, 23 wkts), Andrew Needham (209 runs , 23 dismissals) and Tom Kerr-Sheppard (10wkts) but was usually too good and beat the bat most times when he played his games of 2’s.

During the season we had a few players making 2nd grade Debut’s in James Holt, David Pietrengeli, Ethan Foulks, Richie Hodgson, Alex Cowan, Jacob Steber (whispers) and Bryce Jackson with all players making contributions when given their chances. With Josiah Smith nearly making it through a full season and Mitchell Jackson returning next season after having a year off with injury the club in my opinion is going to have a good problem with competition for spots in the higher grades.

This season saw the handy inclusion of Richie Hodgson (when he was available to play). His first year at the club and he won the bowling award with 28 wkts @ avg of 12.68 and also some valuable runs late in the innings. Hodgo brought experience to the team from playing A grade cricket in Darwin and with his different bowling action helped the team go as far as we did.

Another big plus for us was the addition of James Holt in round 6. In his first season of seniors Holty took up the challenge of batting 3 which he did admirably. Holty did it with an array of strokes but more importantly he did it with a great temperament!! Holty scored 373 runs @ avg of 29.

A special mention should go to Bryce Jackson and his Mum and Dad who would have a 8-9 hour round trip from Albany to play cricket for Melville. Bryce is a 1st year under 17 player who also played in the flag winning Colts team where he took 4 vital wickets in a match winning performance. Bryce played the last regular season game in 2nd grade and then the 2 finals. For only 16 Bryce has a great attitude and a very level head, he opened the bowling in all games with great pace, control and bounce so to do this at a young age is rare and exciting!

I would like to thank President Simon Towers and the Commitee for their hard work behind the scenes keeping this club running. Players and supporters, Stumpy, Pat, Ranjith, Mr V and any other volunteers that I have missed. Also Thommo and Johnno for their efforts and support throughout the year.

Lastly but most importantly my wonderful wife Leanne who doesn’t waiver with her support to allow me to STILL play cricket. This is not easy to do with 2 active boys playing different sports on weekends as well as training midweek. It’s a bit of a juggling act with drop offs and pick-ups whilst still preparing morning and afternoon teas for cricket….amazing!!....not a bad effort for someone who has often said “she hates cricket!”

So thanks again for another season with many memorable moments on and off the field, with hopefully a few more to come. Cheers!

THIRD GRADE The 2015/16 was in stark contrast to previous two seasons. A number of key members of the previous seasons were absent from the 3rd Grade side this season. 27 people played this season and at no stage was team the same as the previous game. This did not help with stability and building a side to win games of cricket.

We managed to win 3 out of 13 games and finished last on the Ladder. Results did not go our way and we struggled to build momentum. Had it not been for unfortunate final-over losses to University (minor premiers)

and Joondalup (Premiers) that were shattering, and rain affected draws, the season could have been completely different.

There were a number of outstanding personal performances this season:

Caleb Lamatoa 61* against University put us in a strong position to win the game.

David Pietrangeli’s 59 in the rain effected match against Gosnells showed talent and potential.

Richard Powers’ 58* in the final match against Mount Lawley showed us ‘younger’ guys how to be patient and build an innings.

The batting aggregate award was won by Joe Mahoney with 289 runs @ 24.08, albeit without a half century, batting for no longer than 15 overs and getting caught at cover far too frequently!

The bowling was outstanding this season and kept us in quite a few of matches after disappointing performances with the bat. Jacob Steber was the standout, finishing with 22 wickets @ 13.32 to win the bowling aggregate and average. Jacob’s 4/51 of 22 overs against Scarborough and 3/51 off 28 overs against Willetton were brilliant performances in tough games. He was well supported by Caleb Lamatoa, Cameron Beath, Matt Patterson and Ethan Foulkes.

The 2015/15 season saw a number of young players make their debut or play their first full season with the seniors. Dave Pietrangeli, James Holt, Cameron Beath, Kiale O’Brien all debuted and along with Tyler Geers and Matt Davis, show the depth of talent the Club has and I look forward to the seeing the young players development and progress through the grades.

FOURTH GRADE Following a successful 2014-15 season where the Melville 4th Grade side made the finals for the first time in four seasons, 2015-16 was entered into with much expectation. With a core group returning, consistency in performance would ensure we would return to finals and possibly go further. Although we did make the top six and play in March, we were eliminated in the first week.

Once again we started the season at Fremantle and somehow managed to manufacture a loss after restricting the port club to 213. This was aided by five needless run outs. We followed up with a strong win over Perth, historically one of our bogey teams. Rounding out the opening three one-day fixtures with

an appalling loss to South Perth, a team who we beat well in the previous season’s final series.

Moving to the two-day format we found some consistency winning three straight against Gosnells, Wanneroo and Bayswater-Morley. Revenge was sweet against Baysie, comprehensively beating the team that put us out last year’s finals. This included an individual bowling highlight by Luke Roberts, taking 8 for 19 with six batsmen clean bowled!

We fell to eventual premiers Claremont in the last game before Christmas and to Joondalup, first up in the New Year. The only performance to note was a well compiled 65 from Tom Smith at Iluka.

Finding some form with a win against University, we unusually lost a day in January to rain and drew with Rockingham. Even more unusual was the following TIE against Willetton, both of these games presented a chance to climb higher on the ladder.

As February came to a close we accounted for Scarborough at home with a solid team performance. This was to be the end of our winning for the year. Losing the final round fixture and elimination final to Mt Lawley and Claremont-Nedlands, respectively.

Put simply, we did not make enough runs as a batting unit and whilst we were able to win games with the ball – eventually we were found out. This will be the lesson for the squad to take into the pre-season and improvement must come in this discipline.

This improvement was apparent in two players, whose all-round game was recognised in the inaugural Adam Voges Medal count, with Tom Smith taking the award over team-mate Matt Albanis. Tom was the team’s most prolific batsman (with an aggregate of 268 @ 20.6) and also took the ball when required (19 wickets @ 12.6). He backed up efforts with the bat and ball with clean ground-fielding and catching (12 catches/3 runouts).

Matt took his game to a new level, demonstrating more application with the bat and greater consistency with the ball. With 24 wickets at 9.5 (best in 4th grade) and 180 runs at 25.7, he should look to push into higher grades in season to come.

The group now possess the experience in grade cricket and have the ability and belief to win. All that is needed for this to happen on a more consistent basis, is concentration. With this, the team will see continued and hopefully… greater success. It’s been a great pleasure leading these men over the last four years – I have learnt a lot! I look forward to being around in the future to see their success.

WOMEN’S CRICKET – COACHING REPORT I have found it a lot harder to sit down and write this season’s report, for the first time in many years we did not win the A grade One Day final, meaning our very last game as a club was a loss, and it sucks. Knowing all the players in both A & B grade put in over 6 months of hard work, commitment to the club and then in one game, you lose and it is over. It does however highlight just how special the run of Four A grade premierships in a row was. This season both A & B Grade played T20 only until Christmas. This is a time that always test’s our depth as the state players are often missing. A grade won 7, had 2 wash outs and 3 losses to secure second place and book our place in the Grand Final at the WACA. In a brilliant day at the WACA, MCC batted first with veteran Lauren Stammers scoring 52. Enter Emma Biss, 2 wickets on first 2 balls, sending Australian opening bat Elyse Villani, and Western Fury Bat Bhavi Devchand straight back to the pavilion. It got better when on the 4th ball of the day, another batter was sent packing. 3 for 0, with 1 over completed, match won by MCC! T20 premiers for 2015-16. B Grade won 6, had 1 wash out and 3 losses to secure second place spot in the Semi Finals, but we fell again in the SF stage ending the T20 season. 12 year old Gorgia Platten had a good game making 32 and taking 3-11, while Gabby Simmonds also did her best with the ball taking 3-16. After Christmas the focus turned to One Day cricket. B Grade went on to secure the minor premiership winning 5 and only dropping 1 game in the regular season. Unfortunately our habit of falling in the SF stage continued. Young Ash King returned from ankle injury that limited her to 1 game pre-Christmas and is a player to watch. She is fit, loves to learn & wants to bowl fast. Ash took 3-20 to lead the bowling attack in the SF. Georgie Ireland stepped up with the bat (it really is exciting to see young players perform well in pressure games) scoring 47, unfortunately from there our batting fell away, we faced enough balls but just couldn’t rotate the strike, falling 14 heart breaking runs shy of the SPCC total. In A Grade; it was a rematch with MGCC. We batted first posting 5/244, a good score but probably 20 shy on a fast WACA outfield and flat track that didn’t offer much to the bowlers. Tilly (67) and Bissy (51) got the total moving up and the 45 run partnership scored at faster than a run a ball by Niamh and Chaps really looked to have given us the momentum heading into the lunch break. When Emma Biss struck second ball of the innings it was beginning to look like we could repeat our efforts from the T20 final. We threw everything we had at MGCC, but dropped catches, missed run outs and wides meant we could never land the killer blow. A lot of credit must go to Chloe Piparo who stood strong scoring 115 not out. As a team we can play better than that in the field, but the individual batting performance of Chloe in a GF winning in the 2nd last over was too good for us on the day. Highlights

Winning Champion Club at the WACA Karen Read Medal night; Big win for all our players and volunteers.

A and B Grade making the finals in all 4 competitions. As a club we are very driven to win all 4 in the one season; we fell short this year, but we put ourselves in with a chance.

Tilly’s 126 in the do or die last round of the 50 over comp against fierce rivals Subiaco. The partnership with Shawry & the running between wickets on display in that last 10-12 overs in

42 plus degree heat was simply great. Singing the song at the end of this game, having made the GF from a seemingly impossible position – Loud, Proud & special.

Tilly’s 91 of 80 balls v.SFCC - a master class in putting the bad ball away and turning a good ball into a single.

Niamh getting Australian batter, and Western Fury captain Nicole Bolton out early in the season, you can & will do that to more players. 13 wickets all up for the year beats your previous best season haul by 4, and you contributed 154 runs batting in the top 5. You are developing in to a key all-rounder.

Renee Chappell took 34 wickets for the entire season; you truly do have batters in your pocket. We all hope it continues again next season!

Rebecca West 434 runs across both grades this season (HS 76* for B grade); her strengths are playing straight drives & cut shots, but the way you stood firm against English International Opening Bowler Katherine Brunt finalized in my mind that she can play at this level and higher if she continues to develop and add RBW and playing against spin to her skill set.

Gabby took 18 wickets in B grade this season; her previous best was 7! Gab is really maturing as the next leader of our B grade team. The injuries she overcomes (or play’s through each week) I was stoked she posted her highest ever score this season with 74 – 100’s next season mate!!

Georgie Ireland (lil Pocket rocket); massive learning curve playing every game of senior women’s cricket this year. 219 runs & 9 catches and you know you can do even better

Tashy – it was so good to have you back; you have had multiple operations on your hip and missed seasons of cricket. It was great to have you back & after all this time you contributed on the field with 15 wickets.

Meg Thompson very good first year with MCC; 216 runs, 10 catches and 12 stumpings, next challenge is year 2 and showing consistency with bat & gloves. Keep performing at club and the rest will look after itself mate.

Ash King only played half a season taking 12 wickets with Economy rate of 2.63; bring on a full season!

Gorgia Platten; 12years old and a good double in first year senior cricket, 13 wickets & 114 runs (HS 53*)

Lessons Learned

We have a great bunch of young rep players (you know who you are) coming into the club; this year I learnt we need to balance their training so that they can continue with skill development and developing the love of the club & the sport. I am very proud of our club that players like Niamh, Meg & Georgie held leadership roles in WA junior teams. They think about the game & as their skill develops & they can execute automatically they will also be able to enjoy the strategy of out thinking your opposition.

Tilly joining the club after Christmas & reminding everyone having a fierce desire to win combined with putting in never ending effort is a brilliant way to approach the game. Seeing her rewarded with a Western Fury contract makes the club very proud.

Grand Finals are special and hard fought all season to get into.

Training needs to help players get better (sounds obvious), but must also be an environment players want to come too.

We dropped away a little this year in our skill execution in all 3 areas’s and as coach it is my challenge to re-invigorate training. I hope all players are keen to get back to the core values of unrelenting line & length, limiting extras, holding catches and taking individual responsibility while batting and always giving effort.

The nets are not high enough and we need a roof.

On a personal note I would like to acknowledge 2 people:

Amanda Williams who I know I played with in my heart all season as did most of the club. Keep getting better Mutey so we can be team mates again soon.

Lauren Shaw, you have always given your all when playing. We will miss you in the team; your hard work and engine around the boundary, those spells of swing bowling, paying a cut shot to everything other than those half volleys that get a whacking back foot drive and your RBWs always adding runs on for the team. I think the opposition will be pleased to no longer have to bat and bowl against you and that is a true compliment of how good you have been. Enjoy your Sundays and thank you for continuing in your role as coach of the juniors.

A couple of thankyous to finish with;

Renee Chappell and Mel Strutt; Thank you for your vision, passion and drive to keep the teams accountable to a high standard on and off the field. Do not become nightmares for your captains next year!

The selfless coaches in our junior coaching systems; Shawry, Gabby and Mel B I can’t thank you enough. You guys do a brilliant job and I hope you can continue again next season. You really are giving back to the club and the game.

The committee and all its volunteers for giving so much back to the club.

The parents and family members who are a constant support as you ride the wins and losses with us.

To the players; Effort is my key indicator for a player, thank you all for bringing it to training, games and in your support of each other.

Season 2016-17 will bring with it many challenges; new captains, young players looking to step up and become key consistent performer, and opposition always looking to beat us. As always our goal is 4 Grand Final wins, but it takes all season to get ourselves into those games. Enjoy the competition and bring it on. 2015-16 KAREN READ MEDAL WINNERS Female Champion Club: Melville Cricket Club Female Team of the Year: Emma Biss, Meg Thompson (wk), Renee Chappell A Grade 50 Over Bowling Aggregate: Renee Chappell A Grade T20 Bowling Aggregate: Renee Chappell A Grade T20 Champion Player: Renee Chappell U15s Player of the Year: Kailey Wheatcroft (Melville/South City Storm) U18s Player of the Year: Meg Thompson (Melville)

WOMEN’S A GRADE

2015/16 was yet again another successful season for our female A grade side. This is however the first report in 5 years I have had to write where our team has not been the victor on the final Sunday of the season in the 50 over competition. While this has been a tough pill to swallow, we should not forget the fantastic achievements we as a group have made. 2015/16 should be remembered as yet another successful year. We began the year without Amanda Williams who was battling illness which was always going to leave a big hole in our side. Like we do though, our side found a way to get the job done and step up. We reached the T20 final at the WACA against Midland Guildford. They had been the form side of the competition. Thanks to a good performance from Lauren Stammers, we compiled a decent total and one we thought we could defend. We knew that early wickets would be the key with Midland boasting the Australian opener, and multiple state players. In quite a surreal moment, Emma Biss took the new ball and took two wickets with the first two balls of the innings, and finished that over with 3 for none. From there Midland never really recovered and we pulled off the first T20 grand final victory in many years. Unfortunately, during the T20 final, we lost Jess Row to injury for the remainder of the season. After finishing the T20 season as our opening bowler and pinch hitter, we again needed to lift to cover her. From the T20’s we moved onto the 50 over competition. For this format, we welcomed Mathilda Carmichael to the group. Tilly was an instant success, scoring runs, taking wickets and entertaining the group constantly. Our season was really on a knife’s edge leading into the final weeks. We were battling it out with South Perth to finish in second place for a chance to play in the final against Midland Guildford. Going into the last round we had a must win match against Subiaco Floreat. Chasing a mammoth total, Mathilda walked out with her never say die attitude and pulled off one of the most phenomenal efforts I have seen with the bat. In a gut busting innings, she scored her maiden century for Melville and dragged us over the line to send us to the final. We then entered the 50 over final at the WACA against Midland Guildford in a repeat of the T20 final. After solid batting from Bec West, Emma Biss and Mathilda Carmichael, and some quick runs from the middle order at the end of the innings, we posted a competitive total. Unfortunately, our bowling and fielding performances were perhaps our worst of the season. Midland managed to chase down the total. Special thanks once again to Mel Strutt for work as our B grade captain. Once again those girls have had a great year and were unlucky to not finish with any trophies of their own. Strutty has elected to stand down as of next season from the captaincy. She has been a brilliant servant to Melville in that role for a number of years Jenny Wallace did an excellent job once again as our female club coach. Our players in both grades have developed significantly in the last few seasons. We have seen the noticeable development of players such as Niamh Walsh, Bec West, Meg Thompson and Ash King. To finish with 3 of those players playing in key positions in our A grade side in a 50 over final is a brilliant effort by not only those players but also Jenny as coach. Our future looks very bright given the talent of these players.

Jenny was deservedly presented as the Female Coach of the Year at the Karen Read Medal. While Melville always believe she is the coach of the season in every season, it was nice that the competitions unit acknowledged this also. Congratulations to Jenny also on her State cricket career. This end of this season has brought her retirement from that level. She has been a fantastic contributor to Western Australian and New South Wales cricket for many years. Thanks to all the parents, partners and family who come down and support each week. Special thanks also to Tash, Alana and Jess who helped out throughout the season when they were unable to play due to injury. A special mention to Lauren Shaw who announced her retirement following our OD grandfinal. Shawry is one of the longest serving female players at Melville, who has made a remarkable impact during her time. Her commitment to the development of junior players has been one of the drivers behind the success our club has had for so many years. I wish her all the best for the future. We will miss you on the field dearly Shawry. Although when you are down watching your distinctive laugh will ensure we know exactly where you are. And finally, this will be the final Captain’s report for Melville that I will get write. Over my time at the club, I have had the opportunity to captain some of the best players and friends I could have ever hoped to have played this game with. I am thankful for all of the support I’ve received from so many people over that journey and this is perhaps the only place I can get to public thank you all. See everyone again next season. Stay safe and enjoy the offseason. Renee Chappell WOMEN’S A GRADE CAPTAIN

District Under 17: WADCC Shield

The 17s squad was finalized at the winter indoor sessions in August, and it was clear we had a really talented group, especially in the bowling group. Pre-season went really well and though we had a few injury concerns the guys were very upbeat about how well they could go during the season.

The season certainly started really well, a tough ground out win over Fremantle was just the start we were hoping for. Round 2 saw a convincing win over South Perth, batting first and in a spot of trouble at 3 for 20, Kiale O’Brien and Matt Davis put on a 4th wicket partnership of 152 and boys posted 7/261. Kiale, who came to the club in the winter from Perth, made his

mark with a 154*, the first of what would be three centuries for the season. The second day saw Hayden Vogels pick up 3/11 and Trent Newton 3/6 to dismiss South Perth for 57. The boys asked them to bat again and Hayden picked up 4/5 to finish the game with 7 wickets. A hat trick of wins was completed at Gosnells where bad weather reduced the contest to a one-day 30 over game.

The wakeup call came in round 4 where a poor batting display left the bowlers with too much to do, though 4/19 by Daniel Lefroy almost pulled off the impossible.

The batsmen bounced back at Hillcrest to post 186 against Bayswater Morley, Angus Flint and Tom Baker put on a solid 41 partnership at the top of the order and Matt Davis top scored with 62 and 36 from Cameron Taylor down the order put us in a strong position. Unfortunately the weather intervened to wash out day two and we had to settle for a draw.

The first half of the season was completed at Melvista Oval in what was a very narrow loss to Claremont Nedlands. The guys would learn a valuable lesson in the importance of batting the overs, as we were dismissed for 143 in the 56th over. We ended up losing the game by 4 runs, though Josh Antulov bowling into a strong wind took 5/32 and almost got us over the line.

The guys came back after the Christmas break looking forward to what was going to be a hard January with fixtures against the top sides. The bowlers got us off to a good start against Joondalup, Hayden Vogels picking up 4/20 as the opposition were dismissed for 146. Unfortunately the batsmen failed to apply themselves to task at hand and a winnable game got away from us. This was repeated a week later in a 30/30 against centurions, being in a strong position in the run chase we got the last 10 overs all wrong to let another one slip.

Sensing the season was on the line, the guys put in a really strong batting display against Rockingham Mandurah Mariners at Lark Hill. 100* for Kiale O’Brien pushed the total to 231 with good support again from Matt Davis and Andrew Silveira. Once again though the weather would play a part and the game was called a draw at morning tea with the game really well poised for an exciting finish.

Willetton won the toss in round 10 and decided to bat at Tompkins. Dismissed for 152, Matt Davis taking 5/29, the boys felt the game was there’s for the taking. And so it proved to be, struggling at 3/17, the dynamic middle order duo got to work again. Another huge 4th wicket partnership, this time 221 with Matt and Kiale hitting centuries, 104 and 126 respectively, simply batted Willetton out of the contest, finishing on 9/326. That was Kiale’s 3rd hundred of the season and back to back following the Lark Hill ton. Matt finished the game with a 5 wicket haul with the ball and a century with the bat, a very rare feat indeed.

Two games left and one win outside the top six, everything was to play for. Unfortunately the Claremont lesson wasn’t learned against Scarborough and we were dismissed for 181 after 57 overs. Those lost 3 overs were the difference on what proved to be a good batting deck. Kiale hit 52 and took a couple of wickets, but it wasn’t enough.

The finals dream was eventually ended on the last day in a 30/30 against Mount Lawley, the bowling group for the first time failed to fire. Chasing a big total Matt Davis hit 58 off 58 balls to have us on the run rate early, but we couldn’t get the job done.

Page 36: MELVILLE CRICKET CLUB (INC) ANNUAL REPORT AND YEAR … · MELVILLE CRICKET CLUB (INC) ANNUAL REPORT AND YEAR BOOK 2015/2016 Womens A Grade T/20 Premiers 2015/2016 Colts Premiers 2015/2016

The results may not have gone our way, but the season from a development point of view was a huge success. Kiale and Matt both played 3rd/4th grade cricket, they also played colts along with Hayden Vogels and Bryce Jackson. Bryce made his 2nd grade debut at the end of the season and the future looks very bright with the talent coming through.

I would like to thank the club for the support this year, especially Greg Turner and Anthony Lefroy, the senior players for mentoring the guys, and Brad Thompson and the grade captains for giving some of the guys opportunities to step up and show what they can do. Lastly the players for the hard work and effort, the ups and downs, and some memorable moments.

District Under 15: Watkins Shield

This season saw our squad really come together as a group and play some good cricket. The final ladder position doesn't accurately reflect the ability and talent that this group of growing youths possess. They again have come so far as cricketers but more importantly young people. The leadership group of this squad did well to keep their efforts up to maintain the standards Steve and I were after. These efforts reflect how the boys respond to different situations at training and most importantly against our opposition.

Although I was only able to see the boys actually play 1-1/2 games this season it didn't feel like I was hindered as a coach to give the best training for the boys. This is due to the feedback I received from Steve, Lloyd (stats man), Mike and Tim. For them to be able to coach game day meant that I was free to focus on my own cricket. I'd like to thank those men for their assistance and valuable input throughout the season, it was much appreciated.

There were a number of boys that had some outstanding performances and I'd like to mention them: Lachlan Farrow - Round 1 vs Fremantle 95 runs. Josh Goodwin - Round 3 vs South Perth 7/20 Nicholas Veletta - 69 Lachlan MacKenzie - Round 10 vs Rockingham Mandurah 6/8 including a HATRICK! Jordan Tifflin - Round 12 vs Mt Lawley 64 runs

The award winners for the 2015/16 season were: Batting Aggregate: Jordan Tifflin 254 runs Batting Average: Josh Goodwin 244 runs @ 30.5 Bowling Average and Aggregate: Josh Goodwin 20 wickets @11.60 Fielding Award: Nicholas Veletta. 8 catches and 2 run outs Cricket of the year: Josh Goodwin - 634 points

I'd like to make mention of the boys that were involved with the bowling and batting programs run through the off season. These boys no doubt benefitted from these programs and it showed with their performances.

Early on Harry Branley was bowling very economically and snared a few wickets until back soreness crept in. Jack Lynn was another hampered with back soreness all pre-season, although he did learn how to improve his action to prevent further injury. Lachlan Taylor learnt about building rhythm into his bowling and how to keep it all simple.

The batting group consisted of Jordan Tifflin, Nicholas Veletta, Josh Goodwin, Lachlan Farrow, Jordan Russell. All of which were our leading runs scorers this season. They'll keep learning their game and how to adapt to certain situations they face when at the crease.

I'm very proud to be the coach of this group of young teenage boys! They have come so far since I first coached the core group in U13's and I'm looking forward to seeing that growth continue and one day play senior games with some of them.

A big thank you to the best Team Manager Marie Farrow any coach could ask for! I didn't see what you did on game day but I knew you were running the show especially for our home games.

Thank you to all the parents that drove the boys to the games and trainings as well as helped out at game days with various jobs. Thanks again to my 'Parent Helpers' for your coaching assistance and I look forward to a prosperous and enjoyable 2016/17 season with the U17s.
