Folding InspirationThe practical application of
origami folds and pattern

The ChallengeCreate a folding piece of furniture from a single material for both the rigid and flexible portions of the design. Also, the pattern must fold flat and compact for easy storage and transportation.

Material Impregnating felt with polyester resin created dual qualities. It reverses the process of paper by taking a flexible material and stiffening a specific pattern into the felt for folding.

STRIDE C H A R G E RBlack Diamond sponsored a project to explore outdoor lighting solutions. This included headlamps, lanterns, and any other opportunity spaces that were found.

EquipmentArt packs as minimal as he can but is in constant consideration of what gear he has and how it is performing. When he packs his bag he needs to be prepared for any circumstances.
HeadlampLike other outdoor enthuisiasts, his headlamp is one of those preparations. For Art “getting stuck on the mountain without a light is the kiss of death.”
BatteriesArt also carries a set of disposable batteries. because they are sold most places, provide security, and a reliable change of power. But this creates lots of waste and weight.

Hand powered
Solar Energy harvestingPiezoelectric bimorphs convert energy through flexing or vibrating the panel. By attaching this to a joint it would convert natural flexing and moving during regular activity into usable energy.

INFINITE 8The Infinite 8 is modeled from intersecting spheres with toruses subtracted. The grooves and holes are made for fingers to explore and the twist in the shape creates dynamic stances.

Toy Blockscome in many shapes, sizes, and colors. It is a simple toy that provides entertainment for children by building. Blocks, unlike other toys, allow multiple play patterns and multiple ways to accomplish the same structure. This freedom, combined with the need to organize and balance what is created, provides benefits such as:• Creativity• Motor skills
But beyond these typical benefits, children who play with blocks also develop better skills in:• Math and Geometry• Vocabulary• Social
Not only will these skills help them in their education, but in their every day life as well. Many decisions today have multiple ways it can be solved.
So what if a child’s stool could provide seating but also embody the benefits of building like blocks do?

BuildingThe legs and shape were designed
so you can interlock and stack the stools in all direction. All with
the same repeated stool.
The stools are made from EVA foam to be light and soft in case your creation falls.

• One of Ethan’s favorite activities was building a tower of stools and kicking it over

Summer Internship 2012
The right foodWhen moms feed their babies they want them to have the best nutrition they can provide. Creating food from fresh ingredients are the best sources for those nutrients but it takes time and needs to be soft for babies to eat. Hard vegetables need to be cut first, then steamed, and mashed for younger babies.

Food preparationsChoppers and steamers help aid the process of food preparation but are sold as separate products. While working as an intern at Munchkin on fresh food feeding products, I contributed to the design of the chopper steamer. We wanted to combine the two processes into one product that was easy for moms and even dads to use.
I contributed to the design with prototyping, user testing, and CAD modeling.
