Program Description

ACLS is pleased to announce the tenth annual competition of theMellon/ACLS Public Fellows program. The program promotes thevisibility and value of the humanities PhD beyond the academy byoffering opportunities for PhDs to contribute to the public good whilegaining career-building experience in the fields of policy, communitydevelopment, conservation, arts and culture, and media. This initiative ismade possible through the support of The Andrew W. MellonFoundation.

In 2020, the program is offering 21 two-year term positions atorganizations in government and nonprofit sectors for recent PhDs fromthe humanities and humanistic social sciences. Fellows will participate inthe substantive work of these organizations and will have opportunitiesfor networking, mentoring, and career development programming, bothin-person and virtually. Fellows receive a stipend of $70,000 per yearand have access to employer-based health insurance through the hostorganization. In addition, ACLS provides funds for relocation andprofessional development.

As the tenth anniversary Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows cohort, the 2020fellows will join a robust network of fellows and program alumni workingacross the nonprofit, public, and private sectors. Please see listings ofcurrent and past fellows here. The diverse experience of the PublicFellows community is a shared resource that fellows are encouraged todraw on during and after their fellowship terms.

note on eligible fields below) conferred between September 1,2016 and June 19, 2020;

2. defend and file/deposit their completed dissertations no later thanApril 6, 2020, and be prepared to verify this with official universitydocumentation during the review process; and

3. be authorized to work legally in the United States. Neither ACLSnor the host organization will sponsor fellows for work visas.

Prospective applicants should read through all the fellowship positionslisted below and identify the positions that best fit their career goals.Each applicant may apply to up to two positions.

The deadline for submitted applications is Wednesday, March 18, 2020,9 pm EDT.

Applications must include:

A completed application form;A cover letter tailored to each selected position and addressed tothe host organization (1-2 pages). Applicants applying for twopositions will submit two distinct cover letters;A résumé (1-2 pages). Applicants applying for two positions willsubmit two résumés; and,Two reference letters for each selected position.

Please note that finalists may be asked to provide institutionaldocumentation of PhD conferral (or, if the degree has not yet beenconferred, an institutional statement from the registrar attesting that thedissertation defense and deposit have been completed and confirmingthe degree conferral date).

Only complete applications, submitted through the ACLS OnlineFellowship Application system by the deadline, will be considered.

Review Process and Selection Criteria

After screening applications for eligibility, ACLS transmits eligibleapplications to external peer reviewers. Applicants who advance to thefinal round of review will participate in interviews with staff from the hostorganization and, in some cases, with ACLS staff. The review processtakes place throughout April and May, and the exact timeline varies byorganization. Notification of application status will occur by email by late-May 2020.

Reviewers will evaluate applications based on:

1. Demonstrated relationship between past experience—both withinthe academy and beyond—and the qualifications andresponsibilities of the position;

2. Demonstrated interest in and commitment to pursuing a careerwithin the relevant field; and

3. Applicant’s academic and extra-academic accomplishments

NOTE For the purpose of this competition, the humanities and relatedsocial sciences include but are not limited to American studies;anthropology; archaeology; art and architectural history; classics;economics; ethnic studies; film; gender studies; geography; history;languages and literatures; legal studies; linguistics; musicology;philosophy; political science; psychology (excluding clinical or counselingpsychology); religious studies; rhetoric, communication, and mediastudies; sociology; and theater, dance, and performance studies. PhDsin social science fields are eligible only if they employ predominantlyhumanistic approaches (e.g., economic history, law and literature,political philosophy, history of psychology). PhDs in interdisciplinary andcross-disciplinary humanistic studies are welcome. The Mellon/ACLSPublic Fellows program does not accept applications from candidatesholding PhDs in business, public policy or public administration,

education, clinical or counseling psychology, journalism, creative writing,library and/or information sciences, law, social work, social welfare,urban planning, public health, filmmaking, performing arts, or any field ofpre-professional or applied study. While the pursuit of degrees in suchfields often involves engagement with the humanities, this program aimsto promote the value of humanities disciplines that have not traditionallybeen recognized as preparatory for careers beyond the academy.Master’s degrees, even if they are the terminal degree in the field, willnot be accepted as substitutes for the PhD. Instructions

In order to be considered, your application must be complete and inSUBMITTED status at 9 pm, EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME, Wednesday,March 18, 2020. Your reference letters must also be in “submitted”status at this time.

Whether you apply for one or two of the Public Fellows positions offeredthis year, the application consists of a single application form, plus theuploaded documents for each position specified in DOCUMENTUPLOAD, and the REFERENCE LETTERS. Before beginning theapplication, please read the instructions for both and the followingtechnical instructions:

A. HOW TO SAVE AND SUBMIT YOUR DATA.

1. Do not use your browser's "BACK" or "FORWARD" buttons fornavigation. Instead, use the menu on the left to navigate betweenscreens or the "SAVE AND CONTINUE" button at the bottom ofeach screen to take you to the next application screen.

2. You must SAVE each time you leave a screen by clicking the"SAVE" or the "SAVE AND CONTINUE" buttons at the bottom ofeach screen. If you do not click on SAVE, anything entered sinceyou last hit SAVE on that screen will be lost. (Any work from aprevious session will be retained, but any new entries will be lost.)

ACLS will take no responsibility for applications thatare not in SUBMITTED status at the deadline. B. HOW TO ENTER DATA.

1. You may begin completing the application at any section.2. What you type into the form is exactly what will be seen by our

reviewers. Therefore, please fill out the form carefully, payingattention to spelling, punctuation, grammar, and case. (Forinstance, do not use all caps; do not enter hard returns within textfields; and do not include quotation marks or periods as part ofyour project title.)

3. Text boxes will hold only a limited amount of text. Where longeranswers are permitted, the number of available characters willnormally be indicated. We suggest that you type rather than pasteyour response. If you paste your response, be sure your charactercount does not exceed the limit. Examine your print application tobe sure your response is complete.

Reference Letters

You MUST ENTER YOUR REFEREES on the Reference Letterspage BEFORE they can log in to use the online referencessystem. Your referees will not be able to access the system untilyou have done this. Once you have entered the information andclicked the "send email" button, an email will be automaticallygenerated with appropriate instructions to the referee. We do notaccept letters from dossier services such as Interfolio.

Two letters of reference are required for each position. You shouldrequest letters of reference from those persons who can best speak toyour candidacy for the Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows program and forthe position for which you are applying. If you are applying to twopositions, you may request letters from the same individuals for eachposition, or you may request letters from different individuals. Thesepersons may or may not be people you've worked with during yourgraduate studies and are not required to be academics. Rather than astandard academic reference letter (though the letter can address youracademic accomplishments), a successful letter should make aconvincing case for your particular abilities and experiences and theirrelevance to the position for which you are applying.

Letters of reference must be submitted online by March 18, 2020.After your referees have agreed to write on your behalf:

Tell your referees to expect an email from ACLS.Make absolutely certain you have their correct email addresses.Enter each referee's name and email address by clicking on the"Add Referee" link at the bottom of this page. Please capitalizethe name properly.

If you are applying to two positions, you may request letters fromthe same individuals for each position, or you may request lettersfrom different individuals. In either case, you must enter yourreferees' names and contact information for each position.Once you have entered the information and clicked the "sendemail" button, an email will be automatically generated withappropriate instructions to the referee.Enter only two referees per position. It is possible to enteradditional referees, but you should do this only if you learn that areferee is unable to complete the promised letter.The first two letters submitted for each position will be theletters on file in support of your application. Once two lettershave been submitted, another referee attempting to submit aletter for that position will be prevented from doing so. Be carefulnot to put anyone in this situation.If you learn that your referee did not receive an email withinstructions, check the email address and then enter theinformation again using the "Add Referee" link below to have theemail sent again. Proposal Upload

To complete your application package, in addition to the applicationform, you must upload the following items for each selected position: 1)cover letter, and 2) résumé.

1) COVER LETTER:

Each cover letter must be tailored to the specific position andaddressed to the host organization. Each cover letter should have one-inch margins on all sides and should not exceed two pages in TimesNew Roman 11-point font.

2) RÉSUMÉ:

You must upload a résumé for each position. You may upload thesame version of your résumé for each, or you may choose to tailoryour résumé for each position. Each résumé may be no more than twopages in length. Please note that we request a résumé, which is notthe same as a curriculum vitae.

Documents must adhere to the stated specifications. Applications thatexceed the page limits will not be reviewed.

3) DOCUMENT SPECIFICATIONS:

Each document may not exceed two pages. Your cover lettermust have one-inch margins on all sides and use Times NewRoman 11-point font.

You will beable to browse your computer system to select the files to be uploaded.When you have completed the upload, your file name should appearunder "FILE UPLOAD STATUS" below as a blue link. You can confirmthat the file has uploaded successfully by clicking on the blue link andviewing your file. Sometimes the process takes a little time; if your filename does not appear as a blue link, refresh the screen using therefresh button in your browser tool bar, or simply leave this screen andcome back to it.

As long as your application is still "In Process," you can upload revisedversions of your document by simply repeating the upload process andselecting the new/revised version.
