Insects are one of the most hazardous creatures that live in the world around us. They are responsible for constant annoyances and bothering bites that can lead to a wide variety of fatal diseases: malaria, dengue and yellow fever. Insect repellents are used to get rid of such insects. Insect repellents can be broadly classified into chemical and natural insect repellents. Chemical insect repellents like DEET have been proven to be effective in insect repulsion but they have a major drawback in terms of side effects for children and pets. Natural insect repellents are made from natural oils. Natural insect repellents are equally as effective as the chemical ones but have the advantage of no side effects. They can be safely applied to people of all age groups. They are safe to use for pets also.

Use of DEET: The chemical name of DEET is N, N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide or diethytoluamide in short. The molecular formula of DEET is C12H17NO. DEET repels mosquitoes, ticks, and other arthropods when applied to skin or clothing. DEET contains chemicals which make insects either die or make them unconscious. It has proven to be a decent mosquito repellent. The biggest disadvantage with DEET is that it is a toxic substance.

Geraniol Geraniol is a safe option to Deet and insect sprays. It is a natural essential oil, a “green” product that uses oil extracted from plants such as lemon grass that have a natural ability to protect themselves against feeding insects. There is no known toxicity to the environment. Geraniol protects people and pets against everything from mosquitoes and ticks to tiny “no-see-ums.” It was tested to be more than 400% more effective than citronella.

CitronellaEssential oil of citronella contains compounds with high repellent activity, according to a research review published in 2010. What's more, a 2008 study shows that burning citronella-based candles can help ward off mosquitoes and sand flies.

NeroliNeroli essential oil is obtained from the flowers of the bitter orange tree through water distillation. Its citrus-like scent is comparable to bergamot, neroli essential oil has the ability to repel insects, including mosquitoes.
