Melee after man slainRiot officers battle crowd at crime scene
SYDNEY: Police riot squadofficers had to be called inafter a group of young menclashed with officers at thescene of a fatal shooting inSydney’s southwest.
Police and ambulanceparamedics responded toreports of a shooting atEquity Place in Canley Valein the early hours of yester-day to find a man aged in his20s on a footpath sufferinggunshot wounds.
Despite the efforts of para-medics, the man died at the
scene outside an apartmentblock in the suspected drive-by shooting. Police say theman was known to them andthe shooting was not believedto be random.
Riot squad officers werecalled before dawn after agroup of young men whoknew the victim clashed withpolice amid heated exchangesafter being being barred from
entering the crime scene.During the confrontation oneman shouted, ‘‘I want to seemy brother.’’
Members of the groupscuffled with police who drewbatons and were backed up bypolice dogs before the menwere wrestled to the groundand restrained.
A police spokeswoman saidthree of the men were
arrested and moved on fromthe scene, but no charges hadbeen laid.
A distraught young womanwas also at the scene.
Police had cordoned off thestreet and later erected anawning as forensic officersexamined the scene and localresidents were questioned.
Jennifer Nguyen, 33, wholives at the apartment block
where the man died, said thatshe heard nothing.
‘‘I woke up about 4am whenpolice knocked on my door,’’Ms Nguyen said. ‘‘Oh my God,I was shocked.’’
Ms Nguyen said the streetwas normally very quiet.
Meanwhile, police are in-vestigating an incident atHinchinbrook, also in Syd-ney’s southwest, after a man
driving a car escaped injurywhen the rear passenger win-dows sustained suspectedgunshot damage.
‘‘A 32-year-old man, whohad been driving the car atthe time of the incident, wasnot injured,’’ police said.
Police were called to the in-cident at South Liverpool Rdearly yesterday and haveseized a black Holden Barinafor forensic examination.
A police spokeswoman saidit was too early to say if thetwo shootings were linked.
