Arts AboundFrom the old to the new, this season Melbourne kicks off a celebration of art. From the masters to the icons of film, it is all here in the heart of the city.

Master Of BloomsThe city will shine in hues of greens and blues as Monet’s masterpieces take over the National Gallery of Victoria. Exclusive to Melbourne, Monet’s Garden: The Musée Marmottan Monet, Paris exhibits some of the best works by the ‘father of French Impressionism’, all featuring the iconic blooms of his Giverny garden. For nearly 30 years Claude Monet painted Giverny, calling it his ‘most beautiful masterpiece’. From the weeping willows to the floating water lilies, you will quickly discover why this French oasis became his lifelong obsession.

The exhibition chronicles the life of one of the greatest artists and his favourite subject, with over sixty magnificent works revealing the transition of Monet’s purely Impressionist style to the expressive pictorial idiom that he later adopted. Be entranced by the true genius as you wander through this everlasting garden and discover the man that gave it life.Image (left): Claude MONET French 1840–1926 Waterlilies (Nymphéas) (1916–19) oil on canvas 150.0 x 197.0 cm Musée Marmottan Monet, Paris Gift of Michel Monet, 1966 (inv. 5164) © Musée Marmottan Monet, Paris, © Bridgeman-Giraudon / Presse

yle Hollywood Magic

For over a century Hollywood has captivated us with stories of love, mystery and adventure. Giving us modern day heroes like Bruce Wayne, Dorothy and Scarlett O’Hara, now you can discover the greatest stars of the silver screen up close in the Australian Centre of the Moving Image’s newest exhibition Hollywood Costume.

Direct from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Hollywood Costume explores the integral part the costume plays in the telling some of our favourite stories, bringing together the most iconic costumes from a century of filmmaking, from Batman and Ben-Hur to Titanic and Moulin Rogue. Rediscover the magic of the movies as you roam among the clothes worn by some of the most unforgettable and beloved characters of all time.

City Of ArtAny art aficionado will know that art is not limited to a painting on a wall in a stark white gallery. There is art on the stage and in film, fashion and dance, food and wine and of course on the street. What better place to explore this creative world than in Melbourne, a city driven by a rich creative passion for art and culture. You can find it everywhere, sometimes in very unexpected places.

Well discussed is Melbourne’s street art, the laneways glow with vibrant patterns. Hosier Lane is the most publicised and arguably most impressive of these. Be immersed in the patchwork of colour that literally covers every surface, or ponder the series of illuminated light boxes as part of the City Lights Project. Wander along the foreshore at Docklands and marvel at the huge sculptures that add to the breathtaking views. Furthering the new trend of light projected art, check out Chin Chin's Wall of Art, all while you wait for a table. The not-for-profit public projection on the outside laneway wall, is an art space for emerging and established contemporary based video artists.

This year the city will welcome Nite Art, a night to celebrate art in Melbourne. Artist run spaces across the city will open their doors to the public, exhibiting the works of the renowned and emerging. With three hubs filled to the brim with artistic talent you are sure to uncover something great.

Open House (28 and 29 July) is back in 2013 and will once again open the doors to the some of the city’s most prized and historically significant buildings. From the old and prolific, to the new and towering, discover the stories behind Melbourne’s wealth of architectural gems.

Escape from the elements and immerse yourself in Enchanted Dome at the State Library of Victoria. Watch as the iconic LaTrobe Reading Room Dome is transformed into a gallery in celebration of its 100th anniversary, with cartoons, paintings and stories depicting its long and prolific past.Image (left): UNIVERSAL / THE KOBAL COLLECTION

World Of Their OwnThe city is home to over 100 galleries, not all of them as well known as the National Gallery of Victoria, Arts Centre Melbourne or Australian Centre for the Moving Image, but they still exhibit world-class art.

Quickly rising up the ranks is Utopian Slumps, located in Guildford Lane. After only three years it is already receiving critical acclaim and gaining a reputation for quality.

They say a picture speaks a thousand words, so the Centre for Contemporary Photography must say a million. Located on George Street, Fitzroy and established in 1986 as a not-for-profit exhibition and resource centre, it now houses five exhibition spaces welcoming displays of the very best of local, interstate and international photography.

With two gallery spaces and a studio, No Vacancy represents an important part of the art scene. Based at QV and Federation Square, it shows both solo and group art exhibitions, ranging from live music, fashion runway shows, performance and major installation works.

My Melbourne Melburnian Chris Ryan will appear as Jack Driscoll in the music theatre event that is set to take Melbourne by storm.KING KONG has a long and prolific history, what has been your experience with this epic story?I'd actually never seen any of the KING KONG films before auditioning! I knew of them of course - I think everyone knows the image of Kong climbing the Empire State - but my introduction to the story has been this musical theatre adaptation. KING KONG is this timeless thriller, crossed with a love story. It’s a great study of human nature.

What is different about this re-telling?Each Kong movie has been groundbreaking for its time, and this stage adaptation takes it up a notch. People are going to flip-out when they see Kong himself - the puppetry and the animatronics developed by Aussie producer Global Creatures are incredible.

This is the first time the story has been adapted for a stage musical and it has stretched the limits of traditional theatre, including the development of one of the most technically advanced puppets. What has it been like being involved in such a huge moment for theatre? It's hugely exciting. To be here at the start of it all in my hometown, and being part of something unprecedented anywhere in the world is amazing. It's more than theatre; it's an event, so excitement levels are high.

As a local, have you been influenced by Melbourne’s rich arts culture? It's been my life. I've done fringe festivals, comedy festivals, trained at the Victorian College of the Arts (twice! Acting and music), performed in everything from sheds, backyards and warehouses, to The Malthouse and Arts Centre Melbourne - where else could I have done all that? Melbourne is so special and I'm reminded of it every time I come back.

Over the last few years Melbourne has seen a lot of large-scale productions. Do you think the theatre scene has changed? One would hope it's always changing. At its core, theatre should be ahead of everything else in challenging our ideas and our thinking. It should also be the place for great vision and pushing the limits of what people have experienced. KING KONG is certainly doing that. I’m not sure people realise that the producer of our show (Global Creatures) is Melbourne born and bred. And now we have this amazing situation where Broadway media are writing about a show that is premiering on the other side of the globe.

What are your favourite…Café: Rosamond, Fitzroy does a great breakfast and Mario’s on Brunswick Street - an institution and always good.

Bar: I love the Labor in Vain on Brunswick Street - it’s a real pub - a no nonsense drinking hole.

Shop: Incu for clothes - stores on Flinders Lane and Queen Victoria Building (QVB). Vanishing Elephant is a great Melbourne label and they have a store at QVB too. I also love Metropolis Bookshop at Curtin House in the CBD.

Event: AFL Grand Final. Even if the pies aren’t playing I buzz all week.

Treat: Huxtaburger with a few beers.

Place: Edinburgh Gardens in North Fitzroy. Always festive on the weekend.

Staged ExcellenceHuge, Heroic And Heart-Warming You will be spun into a world of romance and adventure as the biggest show in theatre history, hits the stage of the Regent Theatre.

KING KONG is coming exclusively to Melbourne this winter, so prepare for the extravaganza that is set to change theatre forever.

Five years in the making, Kong will bring the film classic to life with the help of an impressive cast, including a one-tonne, six-metre tall silverback gorilla, who will quickly capture your heart. Combined with an exciting score of modern classics, expertly picked by Moulin Rouge and Romeo and Juliet Composer and arranger Marius de Vries, there is no question that this will be the show of the year.

For 80 years this epic love story has intrigued us, but never before has it been adapted as a musical for the stage, and with its a long and prolific history Kong is sure to impress.Image (above): James Morgan Image (left): James Morgan

From the world exclusive to the classics, this winter Melbourne is delivering the goods with a calendar full of stage triumphs.

Dark And Twisted DramaIn the 1690’s fear gripped the hearts of the god-fearing citizens of America as witch-hunts and conspiracy absorbed the country. It was a time of intrigue and darkness that compels us even now.

Arthur Miller’s The Crucible explores the witch-hunts of Salam, Massachusetts, following the tales of despair as the innocent were dragged before the town and accused of cavorting with the Devil.

Brought to life by Melbourne Theatre Company, The Crucible will throw you into a world of turmoil as it recounts this mesmerising tale.

The Crucible22 June – 3 AugustSouthbank Theatre, 140 Southbank Boulevard, Southbankmtc.com.au

From Across The GlobeNo one likes the grumbling of an empty stomach during a show, so make sure you grab a quick meal before the curtain goes up. No need to book at these great restaurants, all close to the theatre.

Meatballs and wine - there is little not to love about this winning combination and as their name suggests that is exactly what The Meatball & Wine Bar specialise in.

If it has missed your attention, Melbourne has gone fiesta crazy, with Mexican cantinas and taquerias popping up in every corner of the city. But for quality one can’t go past Mamasita, featuring a menu filled with delicious authentic Mexican food.

If you ask a local where to get great Thai, more often than not Chin Chin will be the answer. This art space come restaurant delivers, offering a mish-mash of dishes that zing with exciting flavours.

Debriefs And DrinksWe all know that the best part of seeing a play or film is the debate over the best part on the way out of the theatre. Make the most of your debrief and head to one of these great bars that are tucked in and around the theatre precinct.

The City Wine Shop, is both a retail wine shop and bar, with a focus on quality. For Champagne lovers this is the place for you, selling drops from both local and international producers, you will be spoilt for choice.

Hihou is a unique Japanese lounge and bar with unmatched attention to detail – from the heavily grained timber-topped bar, to the entry buzzer (you are greeted at the door and guided to your table!). Sip on a Negro-kan, a spin on the classic Negroni, while a Hihoutini turns sake, gin and elderflower into a delicious smooth cocktail.

Hidden amongst Melbourne’s laneways, Lily Blacks remembers the golden era of cocktails. With a menu of spirits from across the globe, including the largest working collection of aromatic bitters in the world, all blended perfectly into the finest cocktails from pre-prohibition to the modern classics.

With its low slung ceiling and ‘mood lighting’ The Understudy provides the perfect atmosphere to ponder over a strong drink. Sitting below the already famed 1806, this unique bar focuses on the artistry of cocktail making - something that is on show in every drink.

A Piece Of HistoryIn town for one of the great shows this winter? Make the most of it and continue the drama with a night at Melbourne’s oldest running hotel, The Hotel Windsor.

Steeped in history this stunning building is more than the bricks and mortar that hold it together - for 130 years The Hotel Windsor has opened its doors to the rich, famous and powerful. Discover the story behind this iconic piece of Melbourne’s history.

Live And LoudThe music scene is alive and kicking in Melbourne, with emerging and renowned acts rocking venues across the city, from the small and intimate to the world-class amphitheatres. Venues like Ding Dong Lounge have become gospels for rock, with live gigs most nights. Behind a rather dingy, peculiar, underground entrance hides an unimaginable feast for the music lover, the walls dripping with true rock history. The drinks are cheap and the music great, making Ding Dong the perfect venue to wile away the late or early hours.

Similarly, The Toff in Town brings that true live music legend to life, albeit with a twist. The band room is hidden among a carousel of train carriages and a rather classy looking bar with a drink list to match. The Toff is a mix of paradigms - stylish, with a truly divine atmosphere and yet still holds that certain grungy cool that comes with great live music.

Declaring itself boldly as ‘pretty much the best rock n’ roll bar in the world’, you are in for an authentic rock n’ roll experience at Cherry Bar. Appropriately found in AC/DC Lane, they showcase a roster of DJ’s and live bands, perfect for the rock connoisseur.

Swing into winter, on the sweet melodic tunes of the world’s best musicians. From the jazz greats to the emerging rock stars, Melbourne puts on a show this season.

City Beats

At the other end of the spectrum is The Night Cat - cosy and cheerful, the venue hums with stylish warmth. The music is lively and fun, from Afro-Cuban and Afro-Beat to contemporary Hip Hop, Reggae, Funk and Groove. The Night Cat has a distinctive rhythm that is sure to get you up and dancing.

Swinging BluesImmerse yourself in the soulful blues and swinging tunes as Australia’s largest jazz festival hits Melbourne. The 16th Melbourne International Jazz Festival brings 10 days of free concerts, family events, films, master classes, gigs, club sessions and parties to the city.

Get swept away in this lively festival, with international stars on show. The likes of legendary vocalist Cassandra Wilson, five-time Grammy Award winner Chucho Valdés and his Afro-Cuban Messengers, seven-piece New Orleans-style Rebirth Brass Band and Blood, Sweat and Tears’ Mike Stern and Band will all grace the stages.

Sporting CodeHear the roar as the football, in every code, rumbles into Melbourne. From the Lions, to the Rebels, Swans and Wallabies there is sure to be a team that strikes passion in your heart.Footy, Footy, FootyAlready kicking off their season is the much loved AFL, a sport bred and beloved in Melbourne. For 23 weeks of the year, loyal fans line up in their thousands at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and Etihad Stadium, to support their ‘boys’, as they battle it out for the glory of the 2013 AFL Premiership Cup. Don your team colours and join the crowds for all the on field action.

This year Melbourne will welcome the other type of football – soccer, as our favourite Socceroos take on Jordan in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ Asian Qualifier. Support our Aussies as they contend to join the ranks in next year’s World Cup. Australia’s International favourites, Liverpool will bring all the action of the English Premier League to Melbourne in a friendly against Melbourne Victory, at the MCG. Buy your tickets early as the Liverpool v Melbourne Victory match is sure to be a sell-out.

Rugby is back and even bigger in 2013, as the Brits land in Melbourne for the 2013 British & Irish Lions Tour. 12 years in the making, the Lions are set to play two hotly contested matches - the first at AAMI Park against the Rebels and next at Etihad Stadium against the Wallabies - providing two chances for Australia to showcase their prowess on the pitch.

Before The GamePrepare for a night of barracking or wind down after the game with dinner and drinks at these sport friendly venues.

Sitting prominently on the corner of Alexandra Parade and Wellington Street, The Fox Hotel is full of old school, authentic Australian charm. Its cosy, neighbourhood atmosphere and quality grub is matched with a unique mix of beers drawn from local microbreweries and the far-flung corners of the globe. You won’t be leaving too quickly.

As the name suggests, The Gem is a jewel of the Collingwood pub scene. Full of retro clutter, it exudes warmth and will have you feeling right at home as soon as you walk through the door. Good food and great live music add to the already friendly atmosphere, making it easy to love.

A landmark public house, the Builders Arms Hotel on Gertrude Street in Fitzroy is the very essence of an Australian pub. The refreshed and restored dining room proves true to the classic bar and bistro counter menu and will get you right into the sporting spirit.

Walking through the doors of Woolshed Pub at Central Pier, you are transported back in time. The expansive open spaces and lofty ceilings provide the perfect bones for the stunning dining area. With a family friendly bistro and offering a unique twist on your traditional hotel meal, prepare to lose track of time at this dining jewel.

With a brand new dedicated whisky bar you will soon uncover why The Grace Darling Hotel has become a local institution. Like its sassy 19th century heroine namesake, Grace Darling, who saved the lives of several shipwrecked sailors, this pub is more than meets the eye and is definitely worth the stop.

Hidden GemsVibrant Brights And City LightsThere is one thing beyond all others that sets Melbourne apart - its creative laneways. These city backstreets have been turned into vibrant canvases of glowingly bright street art, creating a maze of ever-changing outdoor galleries.

Conspicuously hidden between the bustling retail haven of Bourke Street Mall is Union Lane; a thoroughfare for eager shoppers and home to a colourful and eclectic patchwork of street art. Along Flinders Lane you will find AC/DC Lane, named after the legendary rock band, it is a canvas for the city’s ever-changing artworks.

From Little Things In this city, laneways and food go hand-in-hand. So don’t be surprised to discover, hidden in the depths of Melbourne’s web of lanes, some of the smallest and best coffee shops, cafés and restaurants. At times they may be hard to find, but half the fun is discovering them before everyone else does.

Enjoy a bite to eat in a one-of-a-kind setting; Degraves Street is famous for its sidewalk cafés and quality coffee. Head underground and seek out Cup of Truth, a tiny hole in the wall hidden below Flinders Street in the Degraves Street Subway serving up great coffee.

cupoftruth.com.au

Laneway EdgeFrom vintage gems to new designs, immerse yourself in Melbourne’s maze of laneways. Explore Russell Place, Flinders Lane and Crossley Street, home to a treasure trove of eclectic boutiques which allow you to find everything you never knew you were looking for.

Behind bustling Collins Street is Howey Place, a sanctuary of shopping delights, with designer boutiques selling everything from bridal wear to boots, you are sure to find a little piece of luxury to take home with you. Hidden within Manchester Lane, step into Claude Maus for men and women’s fashion with that true Melbourne edge.

claudemaus.com

When you wander Melbourne’s streets it is easy to get lost in the labyrinth of laneways that twist their way through the city.
