Visual MasteryTrace the stylistic evolution of Italian art across three defining centuries in Italian Masterpieces from Spain’s Royal Court, Museo del Prado (16 May – 31 August) at the National Gallery of Victoria. The exclusive exhibition launches as part of the always popular Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series that has been responsible for some of Melbourne’s most remarkable and memorable exhibitions in the last decade.

Explore works that have never left the hallowed walls of the Museo del Prado, Madrid and step straight into the Spanish Royal Court at a time where Italian art was revered. The impressive collection from the Spanish Royal Family formed the basis of the Museo del Prado, which was opened to the public in 1819. The Royal Family were avid collectors of Italian art from the early 16th century, when Emperor Charles V began acquiring Italian pieces. This was followed on by his son, King Phillip II, who became one of the most important patrons of the Venetian master Titian. It was because of these acquisitions that palaces and chapels throughout Spain were richly decorated with stunning artworks. This quickly spread the love for the Italian style among courtiers, and subsequently lead to the Prado having the richest and most varied collections of Italian art in the world.

The remarkable holdings of the Prado include all facets of the Italian style including portraits, landscapes, still life and of course depictions of the Old and New Testaments, which speaks of Spain and Italy ’s shared interest in Catholicism during this period.

This NGV exclusive exhibition will be the first time the Prado has toured their famed collection, and will showcase 100 vivid works from 70 acclaimed Italian masters including; Raphael, Correggio, Titian, Tintoretto, the Carracci and Tiepolo.

This world-first exhibition will be one of the largest to be shown at the library and will tell the story behind one of the most popular musicals of all time.

The exhibition showcases a collection of rarely seen material from around the world, featuring original writing and artwork from playwright and author Victor Hugo, including his original 1862 manuscript of Les Misérables. The 1,776 page volume is considered a national treasure in France and will leave the secure vaults of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France for the very first time, in this not-to-be-missed exhibition.

From the Streets to the ScreenFor one weekend this July, some of Melbourne’s most iconic and stunning architectural gems will open their doors to the public as part of Open House Melbourne (26-27 July). My Melbourne

Les Misérables has a long and prolific history as one of the world’s most loved productions and now feature film. What has been your experience with this epic story?I grew up with the musical – it’s arguably what drew me to this profession. As a twelve-year-old I knew the show word for word. I fell for Victor Hugo’s novel too when I read it in my late teens.

What has been the most exciting part of bringing this award-winning show back to Melbourne?Introducing the show to a new audience and giving those who have seen the old production a new, vibrant experience.

What is different about this staging?The new set, which utilises the landscape sketches of Victor Hugo himself. It’s a little known fact that he was a good artist and he painted and drew many of the locations used in Les Misérables.

As a local have you been influenced by Melbourne’s rich arts culture? Absolutely. Melbourne has become the foremost city for art in Australia, especially theatre. This has a lot to do with the art precincts both on the south side of the Yarra and the bigger theatre houses in the CBD. They enable

a feeling of community and are a highly visible ‘billboard’ for tourists and theatre lovers alike. But Melbourne is also rich with an increasingly strong and well-patronised independent theatre movement, which is producing innovative works of high quality.

Over the last few years Melbourne has seen a lot of large scale productions. Do you think the theatre scene has changed?There have been large-scale productions for decades. What’s changed is the recent favouring for original, largely international large-scale musicals being developed here. It’s a credit to our creative professionals that these companies are willing to take the huge financial risk in developing stories here. It ’ll be a matter of time before we know whether this will be a continuing trend.

Featuring highlights from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum’s extensive collection of underwear that dates from 1750 to the present day, the exhibition traces the history of private and intimate clothing. From corsets and court mantuas to boudoir wear and bustles, explore underwear’s function in decorating and manipulating the body.

The intrigue continues with another stellar exhibition, The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece, which will feature over 100 objects from the ancient world that explore the human form. Including iconic marble and bronze sculptures, vessels, gold objects and jewellery, this is an exciting and stunning look into the human condition seen through ancient Greek eyes.
