6 Gold Medals, 19 silver medals, 33 merit Certificates, and 394 degrees were awarded among graduates ofBatch-2K2 at the 9 th Annual Convocation of the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro. Among these graduates were Phl), Masters and MPhil Students. The event was presided over by Dr. Hamida Khoro, Provincial Minister for education and literacy department and Pro-Chancellor of MUET. She distributed the degrees among the graduates. In her presidential address to the Convocation, Pro-Chancellor praising the progress ofthe university, said that it is proved that how an innovative and forward looking institution could achieve laurels for providing quality educations in every nook and comer of the province She said that, the government is trying hard to shape the higher education into the most value-added resource, which could fulfill needs of the country. MUET Vice-Chancellor Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan Rajput while addressing a welcome speech said that, it was a matter of pride to announce that the High' Education Commission has ranked Mehran University as No.1 in Sindh and No.2 in Public Sector Engineering Universities of Pakistan. The Vice-Chancellor said that, the last two year have been landmark years in terms of the University's achievements towards improvement in academic, financial discipline and highly progressive pace of development that present an ideal prologue to visionary ,Liberal and for ward looking policies ofthe Government of Pakistan in the field of higher education. The Vice-Chancellor , further said that, the University is maintaining strong linkages with industries, corporate sector ,government and public sector organization by providing consultancy services and training, as a result many reputed and highly professional government and non-government organizations such as PTCL, Simens, Steel Mill, , PPL, Engro, SUPARCO, Moblink , Warid, DESCON International construction company, Shalimar Construction company and other various other companies have been coming to the campus for conducting tests and interviews for final year students and have been offering various jobs in their organizations, which shows the trust of organizations towards our quality of education.

Sindh Universities sports Gala, 2007 hosted by Mehran University of Engineering and Technology was concluded in animpressive ceremony. The Provincial Minister for sports Qamar Mansoor, was the chief guest of the ceremony. He said thatthe provincial government has decided to establish a sports city to provide maximum facilities to sportsmen. The sports citywould be established at on an areas of 5000 acres. He said that the first ever in the history of Sindh province, two percent ofthe total budgetary allocation has been marked for promotion of sports activities in the province. It is a great achievementand it will help in boosting sports activities also in the rural parts of the province, the minister further said that all districtgovernments and taulka administrations will spend two percent of its allocated budgetary amount towards the sportsactivities. The minister appreciated the efforts of the organizing committee for arranging such a fabulous Sports Gala, 2007for Inter University sports competitions. Mehran University of Engineering and Technologyhosted Sindh Universities Sports Gala 2007 from 7th

March to 10th March. This event was in succession of two -pervious fabulous events organized by the University of

Karachi in 2005 and University of Sindh in the year of2006.The honorable Governor of Sindh and Chancellorof Mehran University inaugurated the event in aspectacular opening ceremony. 21 public and privateuniversities all over the province of sindh activelyparticipated in this sports gala. From these 21 prestigiousinstitutions, around 600 numbers of athletes participatedin 08 numbers of different events. He lauded the efforts ofVIce-Chancellor Mehran University Prof; Dr. AbdulQadeer Khan Rajput and his team for reorganizing thisevent. The Chancellor/Governor urged that women folk

should be encouraged to stand shoulder to shoulder inefforts to make Pakistan a prosperous nation. He said thatit was encouraging to see that a number of girls areparticipating in such events, as out of total eight eventsorganized in this event three are exclusively for girls.

A large congregation was held at MUET auditorium to condole the sudden death of Professor Dr.Mohammed Ibrahim Pathan, Dean Faculty of Engineering and Naeem Akhter Shaikh, assistantProfessor, Department of Chemical Engineering. Department of Mining Engineering organized a post-graduate level course on Rock Mechanics Design in Mining and CivilEngineering. Addressing at the Inaugurating ceremony The Provincial Minister for Mines and Minerals Government ofSindh Mr. Irfanullah Khan Marwat said that Sindh is blessed with natural resources, and provincial and federal governmentsboth are emphasizing the need of proper exploration of the minerals in the province. He said that the government wouldwelcome schemes jointly launched by the Mehran University, Sindh Coal Authority and Mineral Development Department.Earlier Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan Rajput, Vice-Chancellor, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoroaddressing the occasion said that, today we ani launching a postgraduate level course on Rock Mechanics Design in Miningand Civil Engineering. This course is a part of three year linkage program between Mehran University and University ofNottingham. This program has been approved under HEC-BC Joint Higher Education links program. Prof: Dr. Abdul GhaniPathan co-coordinator of the said course presenting the keynote address said that Department of Mining Engineering hasconceived a program for the development of Coal Mining projects at Thar with indigenous efforts. He said that this will bedone by launching Ph.D. Projects with the collaboration of the Nottingham University, UK in Rock Mechanics .The coursewas delivered by a Renowned Professor R.N. Singh from Nottingham University. Prof: Dr. Muhammad Rafique Abro,Dean,Faculty of Engineering ,and Electrical Electronics and Computer system Engineering Mehran University, welcomedthe participants of the course .Dr. Muhammad Ali Shah, Chairman ,Department of Mining Engineering MUET, highlightedthe salient features of 18 days course. Dr. Shah thanked Prof: Singh for delivering most informative and knowledgeablelectures. Mr. Nabeel Alvi of the British Council, Karachi also spoke on the occasion. A large number of the educationist,Professors, Teachers, Officers and Engineers attended the occasion. The short course was sponsored by Higher EducationCommission (HEC) under British joint higher education linkage programme. At the end of the short course 57 participantswere awarded certificates.
