From Penn to Pen …………… In search of Saints and Poets

Pennsylvania was the departure point, Pen Llŷn, the destination for these pilgrims.

“…In cities that have outgrown their promise people are becoming pilgrims again……” a line ofpoetry from the pen of RS Thomas. How ironic that the success of his pen is now drawingvisitors to this far point of Wales, visitors whom he might have shunned in his life, in an attemptto preserve the tranquillity and beauty of the landscape that inspired his poetry.

And yet, also would have enjoyed some satisfaction in that his prophecy of the resurgence ofpilgrimage expressed in his poem “The Moon in Llŷn” is evident today in St Hywyn’s Church,Aberdaron on the Llyn Peninsula.

His prophecy warned of the dangers of selling our souls, not to the devil, but to ‘the machine’ –technology. The quick fix of science rather than the slow resolution of life’s mysteries, by livingthrough them with attention to truth.

How ironic too, that these new generations of pilgrims are returning in search of someforgotten truths, to the lands that their ancestors left in search of their new truths of a betterlife.

Whilst the church is having to address the falling numbers of people going to church, thenumbers of pilgrims is on the rise. Especially to the sacred island of 20,000 saints, Bardsey offthe north west coast of Wales.

All of which is good news for our local economies that benefit from the improvements ininfrastructure to the All Wales Coastal path, for the walking pilgrims , the use of local hotels, roadside pubs and cafes for those travelling by car and coach.

Since 2013 and the 100th anniversary of the Welsh poet and priest RS Thomas there has been agrowing interest in his poetry, internationally. This year sees the 2nd RS Thomas Literary Festivalin Aberdaron, where there are expected to be American and European as well as UK visitors.Expanded over the weekend of 3rd – 5th July, this looks set to become an annual event, thatcould rival the attention given to ‘the other Thomas poet’, in south Wales.

THE TREASURER’S TALE

Treasurers are commonly considered as ‘dry and dusty’ individuals, withhands stained through hours of counting coins and brains dulled, due to apreoccupation with sets of uninteresting figures.

They are observed to display a nagging tendency to remind hapless souls ofmonies owing, whilst unnecessarily lagging in signing cheques [particularlywhen destined for you!] Furthermore they come across as shadowy figures, impossible to contact at normal times, so that one may pin them down onlyby posing a tricky fundamental question at the Easter Vestry Meeting, hopingto ‘put them on the back foot’.

Yet on occasion one wonders whether a more passionate heart beats underthe cover of this unattractive persona? Does a loftier soul flourish behind themediocrity? Have banknotes and coins themselves some intrinsic beautyperceived only by their handler? Consider, maybe, the seductive rustle ofnotes passing through the fingers [above all, the £20’s]; the shining of a coinin mint condition; the geometric symmetry of the 50p’s and 20p’s; the solidworth of the £1’s; the baroque ornateness of the bi-coloured £2’s; thequivering delicacy of 5p’s; even the useful weight of coppers [especially forcollection tins]. Is it really possible for the spirits to be lifted unexpectedlyduring the humdrum weekly counting session? Is there a grander purposetransforming the routine?

And is a more exciting and meaningful theme hidden beneath the ongoingmanagement of account books [single or double entry], budgeting, invoicing, settling payments, recording, checking, comparing, corresponding? Is there amore divine element in all these functions? Have you ever been presentwhen a Treasurer adds up a page of figures or even a whole year’s income andexpenditure and everything balances? The joy is palpable! The Tipp-ex goesout of the window, the buoyant satisfaction is evident and everything is rightin an alright world! And if he/she also discovers that the current totals arebetter than the last year’s, then a celebratory drink is the order of the day.

It is understandable in the ‘mountain top moments’ that rejoicing abounds, but there is also a heightened feeling of worthiness in the job when the moremundane details are done well. These might include tidy entries, legiblewriting, clear reports, sharing of information, prompt responses to queries, helpful suggestions etc. And even for the ‘tight-fisted’ Treasurers, there is thereward in reflecting on the beneficial results of spending money wisely inlarge and small amounts to further the mission and ministry of the Church inso many ways.

So, do Treasurers count? You bet they do! David Marshallsay
