Geometry Consolidated by two Greek words ‘geo’ – meaning earth, and ‘metron’ – meaning measure

(Booker, Bond, Sparrow, Bond, 2010, p. 395)

Over time geometry is much more than ‘earth measuring’, today it is regarded to be the ‘mathematics of space’

(Booker et al.,2010)

Location and Transformation

Location in geometry terms – knowing where we and other objects are.

(Siemon et al.)

Transformation is the process by which an object or figure is changed in shape, size or position

(ACARA)

Foundation Year, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3

• By the end of Foundation Year learners are able to describe position and movement

• By the end of year one learners aim to give and follow directions to familiar locations

• By the end of year two, learners aim to interpret simple maps of familiar locations and identify the relative positions of key features, investigate the effect of one step slide flips and identify and describe half and quarter turns

• In year 3 learners go on to create and interpret simple grid maps to show position and pathways, and identify symmetry in the environment

(ACARA, Scope and Sequence, 2012)

- Classroom issues - Understanding position and

orientation – quarter and half turns (the concept of angles)

(Booker et al., 2010, p.466)

Understanding language of position such as, ‘above’ and ‘next to’ have a range of interpretations

(Booker et al., 2010, p.466)

Geometry Word Wall• Initial work with young children revolves

around the use and understanding of the many words associated with location. Children need to be introduced to and use everyday language for position such as beside, behind, in front, next to, on top, under and over of concepts

(Siemon, et al., 2011, p. 465 & Booker et al, 2010 p. 465).

Quarter Turn Half Turn Shading sets

• Excellent in establishing prior knowledge of quarter and half turns

• When teachers link new information to the student's prior knowledge, they activate the student's interest and curiosity, and infuse instruction with a sense of purpose

(Moses, 1990,)

• Information gathered will inform future lesson planning

• Students work individually to complete• Can use to scaffold learners requiring

additional exposure to the concept of quarter and half turn as the unit progresses

Quarter Turn Half Turn Treasure Hunt

• Rules of the game• Incorporating hands on educational games in

the classroom provide a fun and engaging avenue for learning in the classroom

(Washington, 2010)

Geometry Bingo• This activity is designed to provide the

opportunity for learners to engage with the language of geometry

• The language of geometry plays a vital role in developing spatial sense. Language has a dual function for children learning shape and space ideas. It allows them to describe concepts and communicate ideas and findings so that others might hear their thinking and reasoning (and vice versa) and helps ideas to form in their minds as they grapple with words and images.

(Booker et al., 2010, p.466)

Digital Resource• Thorough research has identified a digital

resource to assist learners in being hands on with the concept of quarter and half turn in an online simulation environment

Transformation Bookmark

• A handy resource for students to have in their desk for easy reference of the concepts of ‘enlargement’, reflection, rotation and translation.

Summing Up• A major aim of the study of geometrics is to

develop an appreciation of its place • Not a matter of passing on information• Assist children to develop processes of

observation, analysis, description, classification, visualisation, representation, exploration and inference.

• Teachers need to listen to and observe children carefully so they become aware of how children learn

• Will enable introduction to appropriate activities suited to each individual’s level of functioning

(Booker et al., 2010, p.469)
