A Note From Your President
Dare I mention that during our April meeting, we had another thunder storm! At the end of the day we were all hesitant to leave, especially after the history of the previous stormy meeting. Huddled together, nervously sipping a cuppa we waited until it passed!
We had a good attendance considering it was the Easter holidays. Our venue at the Henrietta Room was very pleasant, carpeted and acoustically perfect.
Deborah White had us spell-bound with her informative talk on the Ikat weaving in Odisha (Orissa), a resist dyeing technique, originating from the
Indian state of Odisha.
I was amazed how this humble cottage industry produced such intricate weaving, the men tying and dyeing the threads before they weave them into the unique designs.
Thank you Debi for bringing all your beautiful fabrics and showing us your colourful powerpoint presentation. This may encourage members to travel and explore their own ‘Textile Journey of India’!
Another ‘hat’ that Deb wears is one of a volunteer organiser of ‘The Beanie Festival’ held annually in Alice Springs. The festival’s aims have always been to develop Aboriginal women’s textiles, promote womens’ culture and the beanie as a regional art form, as well as promote handmade textile arts.
If you are looking for an adventure, talk to Deb about becoming a volunteer, or perhaps make a beanie and enter the competition!
Our workshop with Glenys Mann is almost full, so if you are intending to come be quick! See Joan who will collect your deposit to hold your place.
Helen Godden will be our next speaker at the coming meeting on 20th May. I’m looking forward to another of her entertaining talks and perhaps she will inspire you to ‘Push Your Boundaries’. See you there!

If any of the above reads as to where your art practice and you need to be, then you need to experience this unique workshop. No techniques, just a huge amount of encouragement and expertise will be given to develop and push what you already have in your soul.
Extend yourself to take your art beyond where you thought you could go. Any artistic medium will be accepted in this workshop.

The Beanie Festival is a collaboration between existing tourism operators and the indigenous communities with government assistance, as part of the “Closing the Gap Initiative. It provides workshops for remote indigenous communities, resulting in education, training and employment opportunities.

Traveller’s Yarns A letter from Adelaide
A quick snap shot of Adelaide reveals a
city jam packed with great things to see,
taste and do. It has delighted and
entertained us for a week. For texti le
artists nothing compares as the
contemporary Art Gallery Shop called
T’Arts , just off Rundle Mall . I think our
exhibition is on the same professional
level as the exhibiting artists there.
From a $5 tram travel out to Glenegl to
the free shuttle buses around the CBD.
(I wish Sydney had something l ike this)
we travelled far and wide visiting outstanding wineries and
lunches to the historic vi llage of Hahndorf. A far too short a
stop was at Maggie Beers Shop, too much merchandise to take
in . We enjoyed visit ing Sir Hans Heysen’s home where the
landscapes in the grounds of
the property probably
inspired much of his work .
