Speaking Pastorally... A piece of graffiti on a wall once said, “Seek and you shall… seek and seek and seek, etc.” Jesus our Lord said, “Seek and you will find…” This is true for us in our spiritual lives and for us as a church. But all searching takes discernment and pa-tience. We are currently in the process of two searches here at the church – looking for a Director of Mu-sic and an Associate Pastor. Much work and “searching” is going on. If you have thoughts or suggestions please contact members of either search committee. We trust that we will find – and we trust the process – it’s just that it takes time. An update on the Pastoral search follows here and a report on the progress of the Director of Music search follows on the next page of the newsletter. Please keep the committees in your prayers. We all want the right people to be found who will help guide and lead our congregation in the future. We are a “Search Church” – in more ways than one! Blessings,

*******************************************************************

Associate Pastor Search Committee Update It has been several months since the position of Associate Pastor has been open and the search committee continues to review profiles, interview and assess potential candidates. Since mid-February when our com-mittee was created we have met eight times, interviewed two prospective candidates and have a third candi-date interview in early May. To date our search has concentrated its efforts on local candidates, individuals that live in and around Southern Connecticut with knowledge of First Congregational Church and an appreciation for the lifestyle and culture in Fairfield County. Should recruiting locally not produce the right candidate, we will expand the search geographically. We will keep you apprised of our progress as the search committee’s journey together continues. The Associate Pastor Search Committee members are as follows: Beth Press – Chair Prill Meyer Ex. Officio Mary Ann Assing Cara Olmstead Lynn O’Gorman – Senior Deacon B.J. Savin April Condon David D. Young – Senior Pastor Chris Hartwell George Thalheim Jenny Lepoutre

REJOICE, GIVE THANKS AND SING!

Music Sunday is May 16.

Music Sunday is also Friendship Sunday. What better theme for Music Sunday than Rejoice, Give Thanks and Sing! One could say that this is the theme of our entire music program. All of our choirs will lend their voices to this annual celebration of music in worship. The Chancel Choir will present Benjamin Britten’s wonderful “Rejoice in the Lamb.” The Children’s Choir will sing “God of Grace and God of Laughter” by John Bertalot. Under the direction of Lisa Flanagan the Cherub Choir will sing “Sing, Rejoice, Clap Your Hands” by Mark Patterson. The Youth Choir, led by Carolyn Paulus, is preparing a rousing rendition of Psalm 100, “Make a Joyful Noise” by Lyle Heck. Terry Flanagan’s Palmer Handbells, always a delight, has two selections to offer, “My Life Flows on in Endless Song” by Ruth Elaine Schram and “Declare the Maker’s Praise” by Joseph D. Daniel. The sermon will be a dialogue between David Young and John Stansell. This year for the first time, Music Sunday will incorporate Friendship Sunday. This is the perfect time to invite family and friends to share in the wonderful music and experience some long-standing traditions like the Maypole dance and strawberries and croissants on the lawn. It’s such a special day, you will want to share it with others.

CALLING MAYPOLE DANCERS We need a group of 14 elementary children, girls and boys in grades two through five, to do the Maypole Dance. Two rehearsals are scheduled on consecutive Wednesdays, May 5 and 12, from 5:00 to 5:40 pm. (We’ll steal the time from Children’s Choir rehearsal.) Let John Stansell know if you want to participate, at [email protected] or 203-637-1791, extension 22.

Report from the Director of Music Search Committee

Members of this committee include: Barbara Norrgard – Chair, Charlie Baird, Anders Ekernas, Yves Gaden, Pat Geismar, John Gelb, Hanna Golodinskii, Carolyn Paulus, Mark Swicegood, Car Westbrook and Chuck Wheelock and David Young – Ex. Officio. The committee has held four meetings which have focused on the job description of this position and the de-sired qualities and characteristics of the new director. We are beginning to read through the more than 50 applications received and hope to have a group of preferred applicants within the next three weeks. Please feel free to contact members of the committee with questions or comments.

HUNGER MISSION TEAM UPDATE – HOW YOU CAN HELP

The Hunger Mission Team has been working to identify events that will help feed our community and also promote smiles and fellowship within our congregation. The month of April included two local events focused on raising aware-ness of and funding for hunger:

On Thursday, April 22, members of the congregation gathered at the Hilton Stamford in support of Fairfield Eats, an evening of music and food tasting that raised funds for the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County.

On Sunday, April 25 members of the congregation joined in the Greenwich/Port Chester CROP Hunger Walk organ-ized by Church World Service. The walkers began their 3 mile walk at First Church and wound their way through Old Greenwich before returning to the Church. The CROP Hunger Walks are Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty in an annual event that combines fun and fundraising to raise money for hungry people throughout the world. There are several opportunities in the coming weeks where you can make a real difference:

• Beginning in May, First Church will be expanding the opportunity for members of the congregation to donate food to Neighbor-to-Neighbor from once a month, to weekly. The goal is to encourage food contributions throughout the month and provide members of the congregation a wider window in which to drop off food contributions. This will be accomplished by leaving the barrels in the back of the Meetinghouse. The Hunger Mission Team will assess the success of the expanded program to ensure that it has a positive outcome. Items currently needed include cereal, oatmeal, pasta and pasta sauce, dried beans (kidney and black), 100% juices, canned tomatoes, peanut butter (no larger than 20 ounces please) and jelly. You can also visit Neighbor-to-Neighbor’s website at www.n-to-n.org for updated food needs.

• May 8 is Stamp Out Hunger – the nationwide Letter Carriers Food Drive sponsored by the USPS. This drive has

been very instrumental in helping those struggling to afford enough food for their families. All collections in Greenwich will be taken directly to Neighbor-to-Neighbor. This is their largest food drive and is critical in the mis-sion to feed our neighbors in need. You will receive a postcard in the mail with all the necessary information – all food donations are picked up by your letter carrier. Neighbor-to-Neighbor also needs volunteers that day to sort and stock their shelves. If you can, please share a few hours in the afternoon on May 8 at their Christ Church An-nex site (shifts are from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm and 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm). Information is also provided on the Neighbor-to-Neighbor website.

• Soup Kitchen – we have a few dates open for the monthly chili cook-a-thon. This is a great way to spend a few

hours with First Church friends and family. Let us know if you can share your culinary arts (or elbow grease) with us.

Please join us as we continue to work toward our goal of being faithful and responsible neighbors. Join the Hunger Mission Team – we always welcome new members. Bring your ideas and make a difference.

Yes, I/we want to celebrate David Young’s Fifth Anniversary at FCC.

We wish to thank our tal-ented quilters: Edna Birkeland, Laurel Chiappette, Hilary Lawrence, Nishani Naidoo, Inge Thalheim and Claire Web-ber. Please stop by their table at the luncheon and express your thanks. The Rummage Room Wish List for May: Mother’s Day gifts, jewelry, handbags, shoes, both spring and summer cloth-ing, good bric-a-brac, baby strollers, running strollers, bikes for children and adults, golf clubs, summer items like beach chairs, etc. and small furniture in good condition. As always, we thank you for your donations, your purchases and your hours of volunteering. EACH of you make it possible for The Allocations Committee to provide funds to our Mission Organizations. We could not function without you! And remember, we are so blessed because every day is a gift to us. Let us share our blessings with those less fortunate and daily remind ourselves that it is our thanks to God.

BIBLE STUDY Throughout the month of May we will be considering the wild and wooly book of Revelation. It turns out that it is really a book about hope, though there is more action than an episode of 24. The symbolism is rich and the unfolding sometimes mysterious, but it gets us to heaven in the end. Please join the scores of people who are already attending and come with us on this amazing adventure. We’re covering two or three chapters a week. We started on April 18, so you can do the math for the reading or just drop Dan England a note to find out where we are. There is a video com-ponent to our study as well, which people have found very helpful.

From the Parish Nurse… Church Reduces Stress by Sue Asselin, RN

Not all stress is bad. A little stress can be a good thing, as it can motivate us to get things done. Stress gets our adrena-line flowing, keeps us alert, combats apathy and increases our awareness and even enjoyment at times. Prompted by an adrenaline rush, the “fight or flight” response, at one time needed for the survival of the human species, today can be harnessed to give us energy and purpose. But too much stress, unreleased and unmanaged, can be detrimental to our physical, mental and spiritual well being. There seems no end to the list of physical and mental consequences of stress, including high blood pressure, palpita-tions, panic, dizziness, anxiety, depression, anger, muscle tension, jaw pain, head ache, back ache, fatigue, weight gain, stomach problems, sleeplessness and substance abuse. Stress triggers the release of a hormone called cortisol, which can cause chronic diseases like diabetes and weaken our immune system, making us vulnerable to infections such as the varicella-zoster virus that causes shingles. The Good News (Philippians 4:13) In the midst of a fight or flight moment, we can call on Scripture to get us through. We, like Paul, can say “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” This helps in the short term; I like to think of it as a mantra. Then, in the long term, finding a balance to one’s life, making time to feed one’s soul and body, takes a bit more work and commitment. Here are some suggestions from the experts on managing stress to minimize the negative effects: Smile. Laughter is great medicine. Share a joke or give yourself permission to watch a funny TV show. Talk. Tell your story and feelings to family and friends, or consider a support group to share with those in similar situations. Relax. Find a peaceful favorite spot to rest, meditate, pray and contemplate daily. Create. Activities such as gardening, singing, painting or sewing feed our souls and minds. Eat healthy. Nutritious eating habits, especially lowering sugar intake, have been proven to reduce stress. Exercise. Walk, swim, garden, dance, or do just about anything that gets your heart pumping and your lungs breathing deeply to reduce stress. Sleep. Ensuring 7-9 hours of sleep each night can make a world of difference. Church life and our church family can provide many of the opportunities just listed (with the exception of sleeping, because I think I can safely say that the clergy would prefer you do your sleeping at home rather than in the pew). We share, talk, smile, relax, do Tai Chi, contemplate Scripture, create quilts and shawls and share meals together. Wonder-ful Wednesday last month was a perfect example of how we enrich each other’s lives, physically, mentally and spiritu-ally.

Just a quick reminder that the Meetinghouse Monthly is now available electronically. If you would like to help the church save on printing costs and reduce production time, please email Terry Flanagan at terryf@fccog and you will be added to a growing list of people who prefer

this as an alternative to paper.
