GARDEN GROVE—Be-fore writing the column today we are sorry to report the pass-ing of Bill Huntington, long time leader of the OCBA and it’s merger into the successful OCUSBC.

With Cheryl at his side, un-offically and officially, through out their marriage and bowling duties, they were truly Mr. and Mrs. Bowling personified. I have no details except Bill died on Monday and their countless friends extend deepest sympa-thy to Cheryl. See page 1 for details.

The Vegas league bowled at Valley View Monday. Ann dropped in early to visit with league members and wants to see us back next year. It also marked the end of February. The last six weeks of bowling left in the schedule features reg-ular league schedule, a Position Round and team Sweepstakes on April 14. End of the league banquet will be optional at the Lakewood Home Town Buffet, to be announcement later.

Nancy Soto led the honor roll with 216-605, Jean Morby 222-591, Jamie Vallier 209-572, Roberta McNaught 202-568, Aresia McGee 209-549, Vi Wilson 544, Berneice King 201-540, Kathy Phylow 533, Dee Phipps 211-526, Elaine Todd 511, Hedy Schoner 510, Alta Duke 507, Gina Harrison 503 and Pris Mauricio 501.

Cerritos Lanes #2 still tops the league at 50.2 followed by Bowling News, 49.2; West-minster #3, 47; Westminster #1, 45; and Keystone #1, 42. High individual games, and series and team are the same and there’s still time to cash one of them..

NEXT WEEK: MONDAY 10 A.M.March 3, at Cerritos Lanes.

Bring in a New Member who bowls and Bowl for $1.00

Huertas Wins 2nd ABTA Title at Keystone Lanes (L-R) Richard Reams (runnerup ) $500, Rowie Jucal (semifinalist) Aaron Storey 3rd, Mark Huertas Champion $2,300 with Xander Lara (future ABTA Member, and Deb Sanders 4th.

Cordero Ace’s 3-6-9 Pot of $500 at Keystone (L-R) Dave Piazza Keystone Lanes GM was on hand to see Ronnie “Ace” Cordero bag a nice 3-6-9 pot of $500. Pot starts new at $400 this week at Westminster Lanes.

NORWALK—Mark Huer-tas was at it again and won his second ABTA title in thrilling fashion, striking out to win his match by one pin and surviving a 9-10 roll off due to a tie in another. He was on his game regardless and finally won the title in a 199-188 count, over the top seed Richard Reams who led till the 7th frame in the match. It was a great tournament and lots of fun at Keystone.

In our return to Keystone we had a nice turnout of 221 entrants in the two day event. It took a nice +73 men, and +52 ladies to make the Saturday cut to the semis. On Sunday morn-ing in the 10:00 AM squad took 1 in 5 to the semis. We saw Men +75 and Women+21 making the grade to the semis. Also added were Super Seniors, Jim Smith, Simon Rojas and Janine Ditch to the board.

Leading the Semis was the pride of Hanford, Richard Reams who fired up a big +182, topping Gina Velarde at +132 to be top seed and sit out to bowl for the title. Gina would receive a first round bye in the single elims and enter in round two. It took a +64 (men) and +13 for the 3 guaranteed ladies to make the Sweet 16 Single Elim Finals.

The Bowlers took to the lanes, and in the first round sin-

gle elims and losing were Juan Camarena,Sal Galluzzo, Ray Grabinski, Greg Velarde, Simon Rojas, Mike Ake and (Mrs. Ace) Rina Cordero. They got checks of $105 in 10-16th places.

In round two being eliminat-ed were Vic Fabian, Som Seng, Jim Smith, and Gina Velarde, and they cashed in 6-9th places and $115 each.

Round three had newcomer Aaron Storey down Big Adam Mc Kenzie 246-176. Huertas pulled out some magic in the 10th to down Deborah Sanders 224-223 on the final ball, so Adam and Debra were 4th and 5th and $125 each.

It was now Huertas and Storey to meet for the right to meet Reams for the title. In a great match, it ended in a tie as Huertas needed 8 to win and somehow missed way right and luckly a pin rolled from the back to get a 7 count and we had a tie which Mark did prevail in a 9-10 frame roll off with the likeable newcomer, Storey finishing 3rd in his first ever ABTA Event and $200. Great bowling Aaron!

The title game was set and the horses were paid as Huertas returned $43 for the people who had him in the horses!

Two great guys would now meet for the title. Richard elected to lead off and opened. Richard fired a big three bag-

ger in frames 3-5 but Huertas matched him with 3 of his own. After an open in the 6th by both men, Reams held a 10 pin lead. Reams then did it again leaving another 2-10 in the 7th, and was now down by 9 pins but still very much in the game. He again trusted the ball too much leaving the 1-2-4-6-10 and yes, again in the 9th, he trusted it again!! leaving a the 2-4-8-10. Mark was keeping clean and Richard tried in vain striking out but fell short in a 169/188-192/199 margin and was the runner up. Huertas the fortuitous but deserving winner and his second ABTA title in as many years. (Both came at Key-stone) where Mark performs very well.

In fact he bowls well most every ABTA stop. He has been a faithful member for many years and is most deserving!! A nicer guy you will not find! Great Bowling Mark! Mark had the crowd ooohing, and awing in the suspenseful finishes. Not a dull moment to be sure! :-)

Great bowling by Richard Reams also, a true competi-tor. He also could have been our winner this week, and also Aaron Storey in his ABTA debut.

Ronnie “Ace” Cordero thrilled the crowd hitting the 3-6-9 for a cool $500. It will be

$400 at Westminster Saturday. The Match Game of 263

drawn by John Daily was UN- matched so we will have a Sweet $3,500 Match Game again this week at Westminster.

The Match Series worth $350 was as also UN-matched and will go for an estimated $700 Saturday at Westminster.

Champion Mark Huertas is from Fontana. He used an Awe-some Hook drilled by Joe Staton for the win. He is single, and available Gals! He thanks his pals Rowie Jucal, John Cortes, Boo and Lara, Elvin, Nancy, Mark Mauna, and Edwin and God and let’s not forget Joe Staton and Sarah Magno! Note to Sarah, it all turned out very well! :-)

Richard Reams is from Han-ford (above Bakersfield) . He used a Columbia Resurgence drilled by Sid Bond! He has 2 kids Christopher and Candace and thanks Dad and ABTA members for support. We have many fine bowlers from Han-ford! Lito, Jo Jo and more buddies.

Aaron Storey i s f rom Northridge and used a Ham-mer sold to him by Verne at Mission Bowl. He thanks Dan Stipkovich for tipping him about the ABTA saying it is the best tournament club to join!

We had several new mem-bers at Keystone. First time Cashers were Aaron Storey, Joey Marino, Deb Bradley, Ernie Reynoso of Indio fame, and a big welcome back to Mike Ake, who cashed in his return to ABTA action.

It is history folks, as Mark Huertas enters the archives as a two time Champion!

April Brown who qualified in 24th place was the last woman in 12th place.

After the third round match plays the field was cut off to top 6 for the championship match plays with #1 Oyama and #2 Martinez in bye spots waiting for the winners of #3 Butler and #6 David Howton match and #4 Salazar and #5 Gorman Low match. Howton, Anaheim and Low, Huntington Beach had qualified 6th and 37th respectfully and low had worked his way up.

Butler beat Howton, 276 to 245 and Salazar beat Low 233 to 228 both matches with handicap totals. Butler moved on to face Oyama and Salazar moved on against Martinez in round 2 matches. Oyama won eas-ily 273 to Butler’s 228 and Martinez beat Salazar 255 to 246 to set up the championship showdown.

In this finale, Martinez rolled a 150 plus 76 for 226 to beat Oyama’s 147 plus 74 for 221 for the title and $850.00. Oyama got $425.00 as the runner-up. Salazar placed 3rd, Butler 4th, Low 5th and Howton 6th, ten-tatively and the prize money runs down to 15th place.

The next tournament will be its 25th Anniversary one to be held fittingly at South Point Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center in February 2009.

Tenpin Slantsby Joe Lyou

Did you watch the 2008 Denny’s World Championship on ESPN? The annual Professional Bowlers Assn. “major” tournament was staged at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis.

Woodland Bowl? They should have called the brickyard the “Woodlake 500 Bowl—after the original “brickyard” that hosts the famed Memorial Day 500-mile auto race.

You know why? Check the scores posted in the World Champion-ship by “the greatest bowlers in the world,” as the PBA likes to refer to its members.

In the first ESPN match, Australian amateur Andrew Frawley—wasn’t he a breath of fresh air!—who said he “wanted to have fun and not embar-rass myself,” did just that, struggling to shoot 158.

His opponent, four-time Denny’s PBA Tour champion Ryan Shafer had 204—but he had to carry a Brooklyn strike, giving him a double, to do it.

In the second match, Walter Ray Williams Jr., who owns more titles (44) than anyone else, was completely lost as he shot a buck-eighty.

At least Ol’ Deadeye lost to a good bowler, Norm Duke (26 titles), who had 208—thanks also to a Brooklyn strike.

In the title match, Duke, in spite of being sick all week (flu and bron-chitis), sniffled his way to 202—and title No. 27—while Shafer had to settle for a paltry 165.

As if that weren’t bad enough, TV announcer Rob Stone kept reminding the audience that “Shafter has never beaten Duke on television.” (Shafer is oh-for-seven against Duke.)

So, why were the scores so low in the World Championship? Frank Kietz has a theory. He says, “The PBA wanted low scores.”

Now, you have to remember that anything Kietz says has to be taken with a grain of salt, so to speak. For one thing, the guy’s 91 years old. On the other hand, Kietz has been bowling since Count Gengler was a kid, so perhaps Kietz knows what he’s talking about.

Also, Kietz is a past president of the Bowling Writers Assn. of America, plus he’s the Historian and a longtime staff writer for the California Bowl-ing News. And is spite of his ancient bones, he still bowls open play several times a week.

On the chance that Kietz is right this time, I got to thinking, “Why would the PBA want the scores to be low in the World Championship?”

Then the light came on. The PBA wanted low scores because it is a diabolically clever plot to gain new members!

Imagine all the league bowlers sitting at home and watching the World Championship on TV. Many of them carry “house averages” of 220, or higher. They’re thinking, “Hey, I can beat these guys. I’m a much better bowler than them.”

So they join the PBA—and promptly discover they can’t break an egg on the Scorpion pattern. Nor on any of the other four PBA lane patterns.

Let’s face it. The PBA can boast of having more than 4,000 members, but these members are constantly dropping out and relinquishing their membership.

That means the PBA must find “new blood” to keep up its member-ship at a high level. What better way to recruit new members than by having them believe they’re better than Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Norm Duke?

* * *The 2008 National Golden Ladies Classic is a big success—and it

hasn’t been held yet.The tournament—for women ages 50 and up—is scheduled March

10-13 at its usual home, the Orleans Hotel/Casino/Bowling Center in Las Vegas.

USBC Hall of Famer Jeanette Robinson, who founded this tenpin classic 18 years ago, issued a last-minute report that she has received 80 entries, a new tournament record.

According to Jeanette, 34 women are in the Regular Division (50 and up), 36 Super Seniors (60 and up), nine who are 70 or older, and one 85-year-old lady who carries a 175 average.

“I may have to create a new division just for her,” Jeanette quipped.“We would’ve had three more entries, but probably because of the

economy, those three ladies from England did not enter the tournament this year. However, there are 24 states represented—the most ever—including three bowlers from Alaska,” Jeanette said.

The 80 Golden Ladies will be battling for a $2,000 first-place prize. Defending her title will be Joan Reilly of Wilmington, N.C.

Reilly will have to be at her best if she hopes to repeat. Considered title threats are hometown favorite Char Hammel, who won this tournament in 2006 and was the runner-up last year; Florida’s Shirley Levens, a three-time champion; and USBC Hall of Famer Robin Romeo (Newhall, Calif.), who will be competing for the first time in the Golden Ladies.

Romeo won 17 titles on the PWBA (Professional Women’s Bowling Assn.) Tour, and was Player of the Year in 1989.

Not everyone can win, of course, but they are all guaranteed of hav-ing a fun time.

* * *SLANTING THE NEWS: It was nice of the PBA to give Danny

Wiseman some credit for all the charity work he does when he’s not bowling. The 12-time champion from Baltimore appeared in a filmed segment featuring auto racing’s renowned Team Ganassi during the World Championship. Danny has participated in several fund-raisers for auto racing charities, and often bowls in charity Pro-Ams hosted by some of the nation’s best-known athletes…

Did you hear that USBC Hall of Famer John Jowdy, who was scheduled for knee-replacement surgery Feb.28, had to postpone the procedure for several weeks? Jowdy’s blood count was a little low, so his doctor wants to beef him up first. With steroids or HGH, John?...

Add medical report: USBC Hall of Famer Jeanne Naccarato, who was hoping to make her debut in the National Golden Ladies Classic, may not be able to compete because of a sore elbow. The Cleveland native, who was the PWBA Player of the Year in 1986, now lives in Tacoma, Wash., with husband Stan…

And USBC Hall of Famer Robbie Rickard fell and broke her right arm recently. A former resident of Orange County, Robbie is currently living in McKinney, Tex. (near Dallas)…

He bowls with our seniors and Mr. Sunampong bowled himself a triplicate game this past Monday; recording three straight 152’s. Great bowling and easy on the chili. Sweetness quote of the week: Think big, think positive, never show any sign of weakness. Always go for the throat. Buy low, sell high. Fear? That’s the other guy’s problem. Nothing you have ever experienced will prepare you for the absolute carnage you are about to witness. Super Bowl, World Series - they don’t know what pressure is. In this building, it’s either kill or be killed. You make no friends in the pits and you take no prisoners. - Trading Places

game. Stevie wanted to thank Linbrook Bowl for hosting the tournament this weekend and a special thank you to the ABT Staff and Directors for running an outstanding tournament. Stevie plans on using his win-nings for more tournaments and for the ABT Spring Nationals.

Demetrius Cash was the winner of the optional 4-game Scratch Sweeper and $110 with an 879 scratch series. Stevie Hou came in second for $70 with a scratch series of 843.

Banlay Philalack came in first in the Senior Sweeper win-ning $85. Art Gaoay, Sr. came in second for $50 and Mike Pizarro came in third for $35.

The Mystery Game Pot game and score were drawn after our final squad. Game #4 was the game drawn, and 101 (possibly good for $300) was drawn for the first chance. The second chance score of 192 (possibly good for $150), the third chance score of 233 were then drawn. One person did roll a 233 in the fourth game, but was not in the mystery pot. Remember, the Mystery Pot is available to all members (Classic and Masters) and only costs $5.

The ABT staff and mem-bership would like to thank the management and staff at Linbrook Bowl for hosting our tournament. Our next sched-uled event will be Saturday/Sunday, March 1-2, 2008 at Cal Bowl. This will be a Classic and Masters Combined Singles two-day tournament including finals. Squad times are at 12, 2 and 4PM on Saturday and one special entry squad on Sunday at 10AM. Semi-finals will be-gin at 12:30. All semi-finalists must check in by 11:45. All members (Classic and Masters) are eligible. Handicap will be 80% of 225. We will offer $100 side pots on each squad with just 20 entrants, as well as op-tional brackets for each squad. First place will be $1000 with 100 entries for only a $55 dollar entry fee. First place with full Progressive and 100 entries will be $2,000.

The ABT Orange County Branch is launching a new monthly scratch event this weekend at Cal Bowl. This will be a four-game beat the board event open to all non-PBA members. ABT membership is not required for this scratch event. There will be one big squad at 12N on Saturday, March 1. Entry fee will be $75. First place is guaran-teed at $500. Please call the ABT Orange County hot line (714.600.8059) for more in-formation.

As a reminder, the ABT Spring Nationals are fast ap-proaching. The tournament is April 1-6, 2008 at Sam’s Town in Las Vegas. As rooms and squads are filling up, please send in your entry and make your reservations at Sam’s Town as soon as possible. You must have bowled 10 squads in your home division to be eligi-ble for this tournament. You do not need to have your 10 squads bowled to send in your entries. You have until the weekend of March 15-16 at Yorba Linda to get your 10 squads bowled. Entries must be postmarked by March 17, 2008.

We hope to see you Satur-day/Sunday, March 1-2nd at Cal Bowl.

Western Women Premier BowlersThe Western Women Premier Bowlers opened 2008 last weekend with our annual return to

Harley’s Camarillo Bowl. Scott Poddig, the always helpful host, stated “I personally love having the women every year, I always hear about how great they are and look forward to having them back each year”.

Scott and his staff treated us to a wonderful weekend of fun and great bowling. He reminded us that we have had a new champion every year – and 2008 was no different. Rachel Elhard captured her first title! The expectant mother qualified second after Saturday’s 10 games of qualifying behind Laura Lee Daniel (the 2005 Harley’s Camarillo WWPB Champion). Hovering around the lead during Sunday’s match play finals, any one of four women could have taken home the $1000 first place prize check. Michele Carter, Rachel, Laura Hardeman, and Laura Lee were all within 40 pins of each other with one game to go. Hardeman shot 220 over Laura Lee in the final match play game while Michele and Rachel were battling it out. Rachel finished with 214, Michele stepped up in the 10th frame needing to punch out for 215. Michele buried the first one for a strike. Her second shot was right there – but a solid 10 pin stood giving Rachel her first WWPB title.

Rachel wanted to be sure to thank Scott and his awesome staff at Harley’s Camarillo Bowl, as well as her mother, Melody Einstoss (who taught her how to bowl), her husband, Josh, and Steve Hamaguchi, for coaching her and laying out her equipment. “I felt really good this weekend – I was consistent, not shooting a game under 200.” “I was extremely nervous on Sunday as carry got a little tougher”, Rachel recalled. She has served on the WWPB Board of Directors for three years, was the 2006 San Diego Queens Champion, and was elected to the San Diego All Star team 2003 – 2006. Our sincerest congratulations to Rachel! We wish her the best as this is her last event before the birth of her daughter, expected on May 25.

Our next WWPB event will be our annual doubles event at Yorba Linda Bowl, April 12-13. En-tries and details are available on our website, www.wwpb.com. As always, this event will feature the Battle of the Stars and a wonderful pro-am.

Duke did just enough to over-come two great champions who struggled mightily on Sunday, in Shafer and PBA Hall of Fam-er Walter Ray Williams Jr. The all-time titles leader Williams, who was looking for his record-tying eighth career Major, had two opens in their semifinal match while Shafer had three late in the title match.

“If you had told me I was going to shoot (208-202), I would have said ‘where’d the other 200 come from?’ because you don’t think Walter Ray is going to shoot below 200 in a Major,” Duke said. “But Majors are sometimes about grinding it out and filling frames and doing those little things. I also had some luck on my side today.”

It was another punch in the gut for Shafer, who has now made the finals in a Major 10 times and has been the runner-up four times, but has yet to come out victorious.

To add to his pain, Shafer dropped to 0-7 on TV in his career against Duke, including 0-5 in title matches. Duke beat Shafer for the title twice last season, including the finals of the 2007 Pepsi Championship at Woodland Bowl. That day, Shafer fired the 18th televised 300 game in PBA history be-fore Duke cooled him off in the title match.

The win moves Duke into a tie with Mike Aulby for sixth on the all-time titles list. It was his first Major victory since the 2000 PBA National Cham-pionship.

Duke defeated Williams, 208-180, in the semifinal while Shafer had advanced to the title match with a 204-158 over Australian amateur Andrew Frawley. Duke was clinging to a slim lead in the title match until Shafer opened three con-secutive times in the sixth, seventh and eighth frames. Duke’s strike in the ninth frame sealed the deal.

Duke earned $50,000 in addition to his two-season Denny’s PBA Tour exemption through the 2009-10 season. Shafer (Horseheads, N.Y.) earned $25,000 for second while Williams (Ocala, Fla.) and Frawley (Sydney, Austra-lia) took home $11,500 each for third and fourth, respectively.

The Denny’s PBA Tour moves to Columbus, Ohio, next week. The live ESPN-televised finals take place Sunday, March 2 at 12:30 p.m. ET.

He was deliberate and con-sistent, shooting nine games of 200 or better on the way to 681 in team, 660 in singles and 656 in doubles. Steven Vance of Duluth, Ga., previously held the Regular All-Events lead with 1,937.

“I remember my coach back in juniors telling me to keep things simple and not try to do too much with the ball,” said Harner, who improved his life-time average at the USBC Open Championships to 200.17. “I always come here planning to play my own game and hope it works. This year, I played off the corner like I have the past few years and it worked. This is a phenomenal way to celebrate.”

Harner’s previous high all-events total was 1,984 in Cor-pus Christi, Texas, in 2006, which also included a career-high 717 singles total. But despite his continued success on the tournament lanes, the annual pilgrimage is about so much more than just bowling to Harner and his teammates.

“I’ve been bringing a group of two or four teams for the last 15 years or so, and we really enjoy coming back because it’s a good chance to get together and have a good time,” said Harner who bowls in just one league each week. “If we bowl well and get a check, it’s that much better, but taking the lead today was amazing and makes me want to bowl for 25 more years.”

JAT Farm Clubby David Gordon

FULLERTON – Welcome once again to the JAT Farm Club tournament update. This week we are coming to you from AMF Carter Lanes, where the bowlers got a taste of reality. We had 33 bowlers show up despite the bad weather, ready to put up the high scores that Carter Lanes normally gives up. However, a little miscommunication on the center’s part left the lanes high and dry with a slightly less desirable shot for most. Bowlers welcome to life.

We start off with the qualifying round did have some decent scoring, such as the tournament high game – in game one – of a 299 by Brian Le. Brian also posted up a 257 game and led after five games at plus 109. We also had nice games from Keyon Lemus 221-277 and Frank Pacheco 268. Ask them what they thought of the lanes.

To round out the highs for qualifying we have Andrew Hilvano 223-243, Victor Hilvano 236, Brandon Pekins 235, Max Slevcove 225, Steven Maida 223, Joe Mayo 222-222, and Brett Huntoon 221. The cut line for advancement in to Match Play came in at minus 119.

In the next five games we had some more highs from Le 247, Lemus 246-223, Albert Fernandez 245, Mayo 236, and Slevcove 224. Mr. Always Alternate (Fernandez), who finally made the cut for match play, took well advantage making the biggest jump of the day. Fernandez started Match Play in the 16 spot and after five games, had moved all the way to 4th (12 jumps) and into the finals.

Then the finals started with the 5th seed Slevcove (+24) tak-ing on Fernandez (+64). Just happy to be there, Fernandez just couldn’t get on track as Slevcove took advantage and captured the first match 184-146. This it was Slevcove’s turn as he met 3rd seed A. Hilvano (+143) who strung them together for a 212-134 win. Now Hilvano faced off against the 2nd seed Lemus (+171) who was being hampered by a muscle cramp in his arm. Hilvano had no sympathy and just stayed ahead for a 187-164 victory and on to meet the top seed Le (+248). Here the veteran paced himself and did what he had to do taking the first match 215-203 and then the second match 202-176. Hilvano captures his second Farm Club title of the season, congratulations Andrew.

Our next tournament will be on March 9th at Keystone Lanes. I’m hearing that there may be some regulars missing due to the Pepsi District finals, so this would be a great opportunity to get out here and give it your best shot. Until then have a great time off and I hope to see everyone at Keystone.

AMF Carter Lanes – February 24th, 2008 (L-R): Brian Le – 2nd; Andrew Hilvano – 1st; Keyon Lemus – 3rd.

SED Jr. Travelby David Gordon

FOUNTAIN VALLEY – Hello once again to the SED Jr. Travel, weekly post. This past Saturday the group moved down south to Fountain Bowl for a double session. The conditions were well met with some very good scores being put up. We also had an opportunity for some make-ups, giv-ing us (me) a very long day. Our thanks to the staff and management of Fountain Bowl for the accommodations.

In the first session we open up with our 900 club as Max Slevcove brought in 253-215-276-207/951 and Michael Gaylor posted 257-279-202/929. Great bowling gentlemen. For our 800s of the session we have J.D. Pelow 259-203/833, Chris Blankenship 226-218/821 (who?), Justin LaMere 232-202-228/814 (who??????), and Jimmy Schmitzer 216-200-209/801. Very very good bowling. Additional highs were from Kevin Jones 205-203/780, Brandyn Roque 213-209/778, Marty McDonald 738, Jasmine Morales 212/721, and Deanna Carrillo 200/704. Nice!

After a short break and a little talking to the group, we started off the second session with some more great scoring. Mr. Slevcove (show-off) led the bowlers once again, this time going 235-244-235/896. He is joined by Schmitzer 225-234/837, Pelow 235-211-202/828, Roque 233-248/820, and Gaylor 202-213-212/820 for 800 club honors. Also we had Jones 202-223/771, Kim Ferdnance 220/757, McDonald 212/743, J. LaMere 743, Morales 200-202/732, Carrillo 221/714, and Doug LaMere 213/709. Excellent all of you.

Our next session will be this Saturday at AMF Carter Lanes. Start time is 2:00 and we might be able to do some more make-ups/pre-bowls as we start winding down our season. Also a reminder that Sunday, many of you will be bowling in the Team Event of NLAC City Tournament at Mission Hills. Therefore, get plenty of rest and practice. I’ll see you Saturday.

entries due to colds and the flu, the WCST Ebonite singles still came up with a packed entry field of 73 bowlers. Jeff Garrison (Hawthorne), the

Only left hander to make the finals, made the best of it, as he won his 4th WCST Title. On Saturday’s qualifying, Jeff led the field with plus 408 for the 10 games, which included a 300 game. His total pins going into the finals on Sunday was 141 pins ahead of 2nd place. He got started bad, and had lost that lead within the first 3 games. He then he came back with 248 and 278 his 4th and 5th game, and got the lead back, and held onto to win the tourna-ment. The crucial situation came, when in later matches, he won 3 straight games with low 200 games. His closest opponent was 2nd place finisher, new WCST Member, Mike Rausch, who ended losing by 105 pins to Jeff. Coming on strong from starting in 9th place, and rolling the highest 10 games of the finals with 2267, was Jim Gilchrist, who finished in 3rd place only 31 pins behind Mike. Glenn Allison, Mr. “900” made the senior division finals, along with 5 other super seniors that crossed over, and finished 6th. New WCST member, Johnnie Englehart, also rolled a 300 games on Saturday. The tournament had it’s biggest turn-out of senior bowlers in over two years, as membership is beginning to pick up again. 41 seniors entered and 32 super seniors. Six extra places were paid in the senior division, because of the super seniors crossing over in the senior finals bringing their portion of the prize fund, they pay in to the senior prize list. A total of 29 checks in all was paid out, $9,500.00 for this one, and for two tournaments in the new year, a total of $18,870.00 paid out, and for 265 tournaments, $2,966,768.00 paid out. Top 3: 1st, Jeff Garrison, $1000.00, 2nd, Mike Rausch

(Costa Mesa), $725.00, and 3rd to Jim Gilchrist (Costa Mesa), $610.00, Our thanks to our hosts, Mickey Curley, and the new GM, Gary Kowarsch. And their workers, and to Ebonite International, and our co-sponsor for this tournament, George Abrahamsen Realtor, of Tarbell Realtors, who added $500.00, and to Larry & Theresa Wilson for the brackets.

SUPER SENIOR NEWSJim Coats (Upland), won his 2nd WCST Title, the 1st one, a

few years ago, and he almost did it the hard way. Jim started in 9th place, and won his 1st 5 matches rolling 1299 for those games, and held a 160 pin lead, but in the next 5 matches, he lost that big lead and held only a 6 pin lead over Jim Starks going into the position round. Both bowlers ran into troubles, but Jim pulled the match out 170 to 162, and with his bonus of 30 pins for the win, won the title by 48 pins. 16 of the 20 finalists on Sunday, for both the seniors and super seniors were super seniors. TOP 3: 1st, Jim Coats, $500.00, 2nd, Jim Starks (Montclair), $385.00, and 3rd to Norm Black, (Whittier), $350.00. Next tournament for the WCST, will be March 8-9 in Santa Maria, CA for the WCST Ebonite All Star Doubles. 48 Teams, the maximum field, and it is full.

Strike From ANo-Tap 900 Series

by Frank Kietz LAKE FOREST — Tom Ramaldo likes that Forest Lanes Sunday afternoon Senior No-Tap tournament. Last Sunday following the last squad of the Orange County Women’s tournament here at the 40-lane center, Ramaldo, according to tournament director Patti Fisher, went on a strike spree. The four-game (throw out the trash) event really didn’t have any trash, 300-286-300 for a winning 886 series. Lorna Schissle (780) did well. She and Ramaldo won the $15 singles titles. The real excitement was between the 3-6-9 optional entrants shooting for the progressive $140 sidepot. One more strike and Doc Pellitteri would have gone home with $150. Instead the $150 carries over until 1:00 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2008 No-Tapper. Ramaldo and Jeanne Conklin and Sam Rathman and Pat Martinez tied with 1573’s to share the $15 mixed doubles event. Patti reports, “Seniors come on over to Forest Lanes, enter the No-Tap. It’s fun and exciting, entry fee is $9.50. If you like, get in the optional $1 sidepots. Oh yes, take a chance, win that $150 3-6-9 strike pot”. For more information or a reservation, call Patti at 949-770-0055.
