try. Our members are connected
through One+ magazine, e-com-
munications and our innovative and
relevant international website (www.
mpiweb.org). All of these tools keep
us connected to each other and to what is
important in the industry: the marketplace.
MPI offers its members important busi-
ness tools as well as numerous white papers
and webinars on timely subjects.
The MPI Business Barometer monitors
the industry’s most immediate needs
in relation to economic concerns and
opportunities. To achieve this, MPI invites
1,000 industry leaders, members and non-
members alike, across all geographic and
industry segments, to share their views on
current business conditions. In conjunc-
tion with the MPI Foundation and IMEX,
FutureWatch looks at our industry’s trends
on an annual basis with the input of MPI
professionals from 20 countries.
The MPI sustainable event tool (www.
mpiweb.org/Portal/Research; http://mpi.
sustainableeventtool.com/ ) is useful in
executing events that can have a serious
impact on our environment and societ-
ies. MPI is committed to the philosophies
and resources that protect and positively
impact the triple bottom line of
people, planet and profit.
With on-demand professional
development (www.mpiweb.org/
Portal/OnDemand), MPI offers volun-
teer and educational opportunities
to help members continue with
both their personal and professional
growth – opportunities that are sec-
ond to none.
Members from the Canadian
chapters of MPI will celebrate
National Meetings Industry Day
(NMID) on April 19, 2012, in eight cities
with a variety of educational and network-
ing activities focusing on the significance
of the Canadian meetings industry and
the value of meetings to the broader busi-
ness community. Find your closest chapter

Parties, conferences and conventions
spark relationships that can make all
the difference to your business.
Pre-recession, these events were often
glamorous, with little financial accountabil-
ity. Hard times took their toll on spending.
While at first many companies cancelled
events, most discovered before long that
this wasn’t the best option. The need
to gather has prevailed, and the post-
recession economy has encouraged event-
planners and their clients to find better
(and cheaper) ways of doing things.
Brent Taylor, managing partner of
Alberta’s Timewise Event Management
Inc., credits the recession for having
improved the event-planning industry,
thus helping it gain an even greater
momentum.
As clients look for more education and
skill sets from event-planning companies,
industry demand is streamlining these
companies, making professional organizers
stand out from the rest.
Nowadays, events are considered a
business investment like any other, so
proving a maximum return on investment
(ROI) has become standard practice.
How do event-planners cut costs while
helping clients make a splash? With strat-
egy and creativity.
Strategy involves thoroughly knowing
one’s objectives, targeting both the audi-
ence and the event-planning team and
measuring success effectively.
As for creativity? That’s where hiring a
good planner comes in!
Knowing one’s objectives for an event
is essential. It allows planners to target an
audience (often one-third to one-half the
size of former events) instantly cutting
costs while improving the ROI.
“Companies used to throw big events,
invite lots of people and wine and dine
everyone. Those days are done,” says
Taylor.
Invitations are often reserved for exist-
ing and potential clients, rather than
including past clients, friends, family or
even the competition.
Choosing an event-planner is important.
Savvy clients seek planners with experience
in the style and scope of events they want
executed, and they expect to see the resu-
més of the people involved.
“Ten years ago, we never got asked
that,” says Taylor. “Now, we won’t hire any-
one without a degree or diploma in this
industry for that very reason.”
Until fairly recently, there weren’t any
governing bodies for event-planners. Now
there are several, each with its own set of
requirements. Designations include CMP
(certified meeting professional), CMM (cer-
tification in meeting management, with 10
years’ experience required prior to exami-
nation and review), CSEP (certified special
events professional) and CEM (certified in
exhibition management, for those special-
izing in big trade shows).
Determining the success of the event,
and finding ways to improve upon it, is
imperative. This is how the ROI can be
measured.
“Everyone wants to see results,” Taylor
says. “The most effective way is to survey.
Do a follow-up right away and give clients
the feedback. Determining the success
of an event has to start right on site. Staff
should be out there connecting with
these people – not trying to sell them
anything, but just to connect with them.”
Constraints of time and money are
making invitees much more selective
about which events to attend. They also
want proof of value. This is where creativ-
ity makes a big impression.
Instead of an open bar, consider a
cash bar. Try a lunch or breakfast award

ceremony, rather than a black-tie dinner.
Opt for a talented local act instead of a
high-profile band. Rather than a high-end
venue, consider a non-traditional site, such
as a farm in the countryside.
“Look outside the box,” says David
Howard, president of the Event Group in
Calgary. “It makes the event more unique,
more creative, and even makes the plan-
ning more fun. It will bring the cost down
while attracting more people.”
Involving non-profits, even at the plan-
ning stages, is another idea. Donations to
local charities, raffles and silent auctions
are all ways of assisting the commu-
nity that foster positive impressions of
your organization and can draw more
attendees.
Howard points out that since many
larger companies are public, partnering
with charities improves the investors’ per-
ception of the event.
Other options include using a space to its
best advantage – good lighting, sound and
presentation can trump elaborate decor.
Avoid direct comparisons if previous
events had larger budgets, as cheap imita-
tions will inevitably backfire.
Rather, give people something new
and different. It will not only save money,
but can attract a better attendance and
actually engage people.
Howard says it’s important to create
an event that “makes people want to stay,
instead of just stopping in for five minutes
and walking away.”
Alternatively, high-profile speaker and
entertainment events are also becoming
a big trend. It can be a once-in-a-lifetime
experience that leaves guests wondering,
”Who’s it going to be next year?”

Green
By Ingrid de Jong Joffe
In one of Canada’s largest greenhouses,
you’ll find an unusual gathering – people
instead of plants. This is Enjoy Centre
in St. Albert, home to Alberta’s innovative
greenhouse that doubles as corporate
event space with a focus on sustainability.
Today, more corporations and busi-
nesses are hosting green events that
offer locally harvested organic meals,
participate in recycling and composting
programs or reduced-wasted programs, or
use energy-efficient technology.
“Enjoy Centre is a lifestyle facility,” says
Jim Hole, co-owner of Hole’s Greenhouses
gatheringsConferences reach new heights of sustainability

and Gardens, which houses the green-
house and conference centre. “It’s a place
where people can come and enjoy an
event inside the greenhouse. It’s very well
lit and people enjoy the feeling that they
are outside.”
The building was constructed to
reduce energy demand by 20 per cent
and rainwater captured from hollow posts
is used to water plants in the greenhouse.
Within the greenhouse, tall trees remove
carbon dioxide from the air. There are
even double-paned windows on the roof,
a rarity for any greenhouse.
The massive greenhouse hosts confer-
ences throughout the year except during
the busy flower season, April to June,
and can accommodate up to 600 people
beneath nine-metre-high glass ceilings.
“We’ve had a tremendous number of
event bookings from corporations,” says
Hole. “People love the space and natural
light because it is very inspiring. It’s like a
form of light therapy.”
One of the most unusual events hosted
at the centre was for the Firefly Theatre.
They presented an acrobatic performance
high above the tables using the exposed
trusses in the greenhouse ceiling.
The green-event trend is growing. Two
years ago, Edmonton Tourism developed
FRESH Edmonton, a green-meeting initia-
tive. It offers hospitality planners resources
that include a Green Meetings User Guide
and an Eco Report Card to encourage the
use of local venues, suppliers and attrac-
tions that offer environmental, social and
economic programs.
“We’re seeing more informed custom-
ers who look for sustainable opportuni-
ties,” says Cliff Higuchi, vice-president and
general manager at the Edmonton Shaw
Conference Centre.
The Eco Report Card features checklists
for pre-event planning tips, transportation,
communications and resource recovery as
well as recommendations for sustainable
actions.
“Resources are more readily available in
summer, but there is growing demand in
the marketplace, which means there are
more sustainable options available and for
better price points,” says Higuchi.
Tips for a
green gathering Send invitations by email to reduce
paper waste.
Use teleconferencing and video-
conferencing to minimize travel.
Use recycled stock and vegetable
dyes for printed materials.
Use caterers that supply reusable
glassware and dishware.
Supply water in jugs instead of plas-
tic bottles.
Choose a menu that features locally
sourced food.
Use dry-erase white boards or elec-
tronic presentations instead of flip
charts.
Provide recycling bins and educate
people on their use.
Provide a buffet menu that serves in
bulk and reduces packaging.
Ensure the kitchen composts, recy-
cles and donates non-served food.
Donate to a local charity instead of
providing giveaways.
Use natural light, energy-efficient
lighting and LED equipment.
Provide commuter shuttles or transit
passes to reduce carbon footprint.

Team-building events like
scavenger hunts, dragon-
boating and cooking offer
creative, physical ways of focus-
ing people on outcomes.
“The experience of being
mixed into groups or teams that
you may not normally work with
to complete some sort of activ-
ity or challenge instantly breaks
down barriers and teaches par-
ticipants how to communicate
better,” says Shannon Eis, mar-
keting co-ordinator for Canadian
Outback Adventures & Events.
“These types of interactive team-
building activities allow people
to encourage, support and really
start trusting each other and
thinking outside the box.”
Cut to the chaseCanadian Outback Adventures
offers its “Amazing Chase” team-
building activity in a number of
communities, including Calgary,
Banff, Jasper and Edmonton.
Similar to the Amazing Race tele-
vision show, the event is a race
against time with a competitive
team element.
“The race consists of a
series of clues to get from one
Dragon-boating teaches people
to communicate effectively and
paddle in unison: “a great business
metaphor,” says Andrew Reid,
founder of Big Fish Interactive

checkpoint to another,” says Eis, explaining that teams encoun-
ter certain challenges and activities along the way that must
be completed in order to continue. “The ultimate goal is to be
crowned the Amazing Chase champions.”
The course, she adds, involves “significant walking” and is
designed to let participants see some of the areas’ best land-
marks and attractions. “It’s a great way for out-of-town delegates
to see the city in a short amount of time.”
Stroke of geniusIf you’re interested in a water activity that offers team-building
potential, one option is dragon-boating, in which 20 people
learn to “communicate effectively and paddle in unison, whether
they’re racing against other teams or not,” says Andrew Reid. His
company, Big Fish Interactive, often organizes corporate dragon-
boating events.
“Dragon-boating is a great business metaphor when it’s
framed the right way.”
Because the activity takes place outdoors and offers a fun and
physical challenge, “paddling puts all the right elements in place
for team members to realize that, ‘Hey, in a short amount of time
we went from not being able to do something to doing it pretty
well.’ It’s an excellent teaching tool for launching a new company
strategy or direction based on teamwork and togetherness. You
are, quite literally, all in the same boat.”
Spice it upWhile too many cooks can spoil the broth, Cordon Bleu-trained
chef Patrick Dunn believes that putting delegates in the kitchen
and adding a little healthy competition to the mix is one of the
best ways to get them thinking and working together.
“Team-building through cooking gets your staff, colleagues or
clients out of their comfort zones and in front of the stove creat-
ing delicious meals,” says the owner of Calgary-based InterCourse
Chef Services. “These classes are about learning new skills, trying
new ingredients and, of course, team-building … with a little
friendly competition to boot.”
Red Deer’s Cooking Room similarly offers custom corporate
team-building programs that divide as many as 35 participants
into smaller groups and tasks each team with creating a delicious
recipe under the guidance of a professional chef.
“We get everyone, including the oilpatch workers, to don an
apron,” says Cooking Room co-owner Selena Hucal. “We then
assign different recipes to each team and often structure it as a
bit of a challenge with a judging panel at the end, to put a bit of
competitive energy into the room.”
It’s a chance, says Hucal, “for everyone to put their best foot
forward, plus there’s a lot of sharing and interacting that needs
to happen in the kitchen in order to figure out how to do the
job well.” Cooking, she adds, provides “a nice little metaphor for
working on any task: together, you can pull anything off.”
Acting outFor an Academy Award-worthy activity, improvisational theatre
– known simply as improv – can be a powerful team-building
tool. According to Slixer Entertainment founder Chris Hill, who
organ izes team-building events, including improv comedy, for
business clients across North America, a common and important
side-effect of improv is laughter.
“Comedy fosters successful collaboration,” Hill explains. “[At]
our team-building improv event … your people actually partici-
pate and learn improv techniques. In order to succeed, partici-
pants must establish effective communication and accept and
build upon each other’s actions while remaining as flexible as
possible. As a result, everyone is empowered to interactively dis-
cover his or her inherent creative potential.”

How to use Meeting Places’ region-by-region directories of venues and services
Welcome to the meeting planners’ resource section of Meeting Places, including directories of all the resources you’ll need for planning meetings, conferences, conventions and trade shows throughout Alberta.
Start by using the colour-coded map of Alberta on page 13 to identify the region of your intended event. Then use the two main sections of the Meeting Places resource guide: Meeting Places at a Glance, which offers details of meeting
venues in each region; and regional directories, which guide you to all the services you’ll need wherever you are holding your event.
Regional DirectoriesRefer to the Alberta map on page 13 for the page numbers of individual regional directories. The introductory pages will update you on the latest news: new conference or convention facilities that have come on-line in the past year, or significant meeting-venue renovations. The directories that ensue list the services available in each of the region’s towns and cities.
Company IndexIf you already know the company you want for the job, simply turn to the company index at the back of the regional directories. You’ll find an alphabetized listing of every company, referring you to the page that includes a description of the company and contact information.
Meeting Places at a GlanceIf you’re looking for details of specific venues, start with Meeting Places at a Glance, below. First check the Alberta map on page 13 to confirm which region your event is in, then browse the listings under that region.

A new definition of cool
By Angela MacIsaac
Chefs at the Calgary Hyatt Regency
are redefining the word “fresh.”
A rooftop garden supplies
organic ingredients and garnishes for the
Hyatt Regency’s catering department and
the Thomsons Restaurant located in the
hotel.
The Hyatt is the first hotel in Calgary to
join the movement of rooftop gardens in
urban centres around the world.
“It’s a new aspect of freshness,” says
Chef Ray Nolan. “We give our guests the
freshest experience. The herbs are picked
an hour before service and you can smell
the aroma throughout the restaurant.”
The tourism business, including confer-
ence and meeting hosting, is becoming
more conscious of its sustainability prac-
tices. The Hyatt Regency, says director of
catering Amy Meadus, is a leader for insti-
tuting green initiatives.
It was the first hotel in Western Canada
to join the Bullfrog Power Program and it
launched a number of respire guest and
meeting rooms, which feature a hypoal-
lergenic application of air filtration. The
wind-power energy runs through select
areas, including the banquet room and
spa. “We need to move in the same direction as our clients,”
Meadus says. “We’re finding many are calling and asking about
our green initiatives.”
There is, she continues, an increase in conference and meet-
ing planners requesting environmentally conscious events. She
estimates about three-quarters of the groups that reserve space
at the Hyatt expect it.
“An event doesn’t have to be 100 per cent green,” she says.
“Many are looking for just a few components they can take back
to their shareholders, management and employees to incorpo-
rate into the operations.”
Other Hyatt initiatives include:
High-efficiency lighting systems
Water-saving measures (low-flow bathrooms and automatic
flush controls where applicable)
Energy Star-rated appliances and office equipment
Voluntary towel and linen laundry programs in guest rooms
Environmentally sensitive cleaning products
Blue recycle bins in all guest rooms
Revolving lobby doors, reducing outside air infiltration into air-
conditioned space
The Hyatt boasts a total of 31,105 square feet of function

space, 21 meeting rooms of varying size and the Imperial
Ballroom, Calgary’s largest hotel ballroom at 13,500 square feet.
It offers a dedicated meeting concierge to assist with event-
planning and a direct connection via covered walkway to the
Telus Convention Centre. The Telus Convention Centre is Calgary’s
premier conference location with 120,000 square feet of meeting
space, ready to accommodate up to 4,000 people.
The rooftop garden is a real point of pride for the Hyatt and
the catering staff. The chefs spearheaded the effort and care for
the garden as part of their kitchen duties.
“It means we are able to use locally grown product for dishes
on our banquet menu,” says Nolan. “If I had enough space, I’d
plant things all year round.”
He points out that the catering department also sources local
businesses and associations for other products, such as honey,
mead wine, game and beef.
“The Hyatt is a big supporter of local suppliers,” he says. “We’re
currently using Pura Vida beef from Lethbridge for a classic steak
menu. It’s hormone-free, prairie-raised beef.”
The Hyatt maintains a year-round commitment to environ-
mental initiatives by sourcing organic food from local farmers and
ranchers whenever possible. The commitment to sustainable cui-
sine is inspiring the catering department to grow its own produce
exclusively for the hotel.
“We bring a more sustainable product into the hotel,” Meadus
says. “We have a bit of an edge and we’re very proud of that. We
pride ourselves on being a leader in Calgary.
“When we see others following suit, we’ll change directions.
We’re leaders, not chasers.”
Get back to natureWhile conference planners can find robust green initiatives in the
city, they may want to check on the outskirts for honest-to-good-
ness back-to-nature experiences for their conferences.
The Rafter Six Ranch Resort offers a rustic setting in Exshaw.
The Sundance Hall features a 2,304-square-foot meeting
space with a theatre, banquet hall and smaller meeting rooms.

Located on the west side of Canada Olympic Park, the athletic and ice complex is a brand new 500,000 sq foot facility offering the finest in meeting and convention rooms. The marquee room in this new complex is a 5085 square foot centre which overlooks the international ice arena. This room can be booked at its full capacity for large events or conveniently divided into four smaller sections.

accommodate smaller functions.
Nestled at the base of Big Hill in the
Valley of the Bow River – and with an
exquisite view of the Rocky Mountains –
the Cochrane RancheHouse can turn a
corporate event into something special,
with a flair of the natural west.
It has eight flexible meeting spaces
that can host five to 300 people for
day retreats, planning sessions and
presentations.
The Lynnwood Ranch rests on the
banks of the Sheep River and will give
corporate events and meetings a truly
incomparable flavour with home-cooked
meals, including a pit barbecue. The
Lynnwood Ranch can accommodate up to
500 people with full catering and technical
and audio support.
Calgary Stampede Park, which is easy
to access by LRT from the downtown core,
hosts more than 10,000 events each year,
including trade and consumer shows,
meetings, conferences, banquets and
more. It has 450,000 square feet of space,
including the Corral Arena, which is ideal
for trade shows and large-scale events.
The stampede also offers such in-house
services as staging, AV services, high-
speed Internet, security and catering.
If planners would prefer to stick to the
downtown core, they can also consider
Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts.
Epcor Centre places an emphasis on arts
and culture, so meeting spaces have the
additional cultural element in the decor. It
holds 7,550 square feet of meeting space
and features five theatres, including one
that seats 2,000.
An experience awaits at Heritage Park
in the southwest. The park is a lively his-
torical setting, taking its visitors back to
Calgary’s early days. Corporate meetings,
seminars, receptions and conferences for
up to 3,000 guests can be held there. It
offers large rooms and banquet halls to
suit any needs.

Embracing eco-friendly events
By Angela MacIsaac
It’s an understatement to say the entire tourism industry of
Edmonton has embraced green initiatives. In fact, the entire
city – from business to residential – appears to be on board with
becoming environmentally sensitive and sustainable.
“It’s fundamentally critical that we in Edmonton and the prov-
ince of Alberta demonstrate our environmental responsibilities
to negate the image that’s been represented internationally,”
says Ken Fiske, vice-president of tourism and special events at
Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC).
EEDC is discovering a growing interest in conference and
event-planners looking for green initiatives.
“There’s also a growing element where it’s a must-have in
order for us to win their bid,” says Fiske.
And he has a simple solution for those concerned with envi-
ronmental practices in his area.
“We’ll take them to the Syncrude Research Centre and that
blows them away,” he says.
But the statistics speak for themselves. The City of Edmonton
takes a tremendous amount of pride in its recycling effort. Sixty
per cent of all household waste is diverted from landfill, thanks to
the city’s recycling program. By 2012–13, Fiske expects that num-
ber will reach 85 per cent.
That extends to the tourism industry, especially conferences
and meetings.
“When you run a major trade show, the amount of cardboard
produced is staggering,” Fiske says. “We thought we should start
recycling it.”
The recycling is part of EEDC’s three-pronged approach. It also
undertakes composting and diverts leftover conference food to
homeless shelters and food banks. The Shaw Conference Centre
is the first commercial entity to use the City of Edmonton’s com-
posting facility at the Waste Management Centre.
Edmonton Tourism also runs the FRESH initiative, promoting
the city’s world-class facilities, attractions and events alongside
its environmental, social and economic programs. The campaign
includes a Green Meetings Guide with eco-tips that can be imple-
mented into Edmonton conventions and other events.
The world-class facilities, says Fiske, are the chief reason con-
ferences and events are drawn to Edmonton.
“In the very broadest sense,” he says, “we are very popular
because of the quality of our facilities and their nearness to the

of its waste from landfills through its
recycling and composting, is a partner in
FRESH. Conference planners can reduce
their event’s environmental impact with
full access to the program, including the
Green Meetings Guide, eco-friendly itin-
eraries and an eco report card and report
card calculating sheet.
In January 2011, the Shaw received
the Building Owners and Managers
Association’s Building Environmental
Standards certification. The BOMA BESt
recognizes organizations for their commit-
ment to the environment.
The Edmonton Exposition and
Conference Centre (EXPO) is also on board.
With a total of 522,000 contiguous square
feet of conference, meeting or trade show
space, it is prepared to host large and
small events, while reducing its carbon
footprint.
The EXPO has conference and meeting
space in addition to four new exhibit halls.
The structure uses natural sunlight in the
main areas, and the kitchen prepares and
serves locally grown food.
Planners can ensure their events are
green by developing the program with
EXPO staff, who offer helpful suggestions
such as online registration and website
creation to decrease paper use and mail-
ing costs.
Many hotels in the area are keen
to get their Green Key rating from the
Hotel Association of Canada, says Fiske.

hotels, all right next to the beautiful river
valley.”
The Shaw Conference Centre is
Edmonton’s gold nugget, hosting almost
650 events each year and attracting more
than half a million visitors annually. It can
accommodate groups as small as five or
large conferences and trade shows for up
to 6,000 people.

The Green Key Eco-Rating Program is a
graduated system designed to recognize
hotels that have taken steps to protect the
environment.
The Fairmont Hotel MacDonald, which
can host groups from 10 to 350 people,
has a rating of four out of five keys.
In 2009, it launched the Green Stay
program in conjunction with the Carbon
Farmers of northern Alberta. If guests of
the hotel use paperless checkout, decline
newspaper service and opt for towel and
linen service every second day, a tree is
planted and cared for in their name by the
Carbon Farmers.
“The program has been very well
received by our business travellers,
who are definitely trying to be more
environmentally responsible,” says Lana
Uytterhagen, director of sales and market-
ing at Fairmont Hotel MacDonald.
As part of the larger Fairmont chain,
the Hotel MacDonald participates in the
World Wildlife Foundation’s Climate Saver
Program. Since the hotel’s join date, it has
reduced its emissions by 8.4 per cent.
The efforts by all members of the tour-
ism industry is a point of pride for Fiske.
“We’re doing so much,” he says. “We
aim to use local organic processes for
vegetables and other food, our facilities
are equipped with low-voltage, automatic
light sensors. … It’s really working its way
through our culture as a tourism industry.
“And I take a lot of pride in our city for
doing that.”
The Oasis Centre is a multi-faceted,
first-class conference and convention
centre. It holds classroom and meeting
space with state-of-the-art audiovisual
capabilities and HD video conferencing
and broadcasting. A tiered theatre seats
up to 800 for meetings and presentations
with room for up to 400 in table seating.
Conference guests can enjoy breaks in
landscaped private gardens.
Conference services at the University of
Alberta will work with planners to ensure
their event is top-notch. In addition to
theatres and classroom space, the univer-
sity offers the Lister Conference Centre –
eight bright and spacious meeting rooms
for up to 320 people.
There’s dedicated parking, optional
high-speed Internet and barrier-free
access.
Select the daily meeting package at
Mayfield Inn & Suites and conference
guests will be treated to a deluxe con-
tinental breakfast, an urban lunch and
signature desserts. The Mayfield Inn holds
68,000 square feet of conference, trade
show and meeting space. The Mayfield
Trade Centre, with 22 distinct meeting
rooms, accommodates events for up to
1,500 guests.
The Fairmont Hotel MacDonald is a partner with City of Edmonton in the FRESH
campaign and is committed to using local farmers and food suppliers

The national parks of the Alberta Rockies are famous for their
beauty, quality and prestige. From the glacial landscape of
Lake Louise to the ruggedness of Kananaskis Country, this
region will give your event a touch of modern mountain style.
Lake Louise – a touch of classThe July 2011 visit by the newly wedded Duke and Duchess of
Cambridge, Prince William and Catherine, to the backcountry
Skoki Lodge has renewed Lake Louise’s prestigious reputation.
The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is a luxury lakeside hotel
with 36,000 square feet of meeting space, a 24-hour business
centre and many team activities. Lake Louise Ski Area – where the
Downhill World Cup is held each December – is 10 minutes away.
The Lake Louise Inn is a mountain lodge with 247 guest rooms,
three restaurants and meeting rooms for groups of 10 to 200.
Nearby, the former Lake Louise Station is a modern facil-
ity with a turn-of-the-century style – host your meeting in the
Stationmaster’s Room with its original fittings or capture the
Roaring Twenties spirit in the 1925 Delamere Dining Car.
Banff – an historical hostBanff was Canada’s first national park and is still famous for its
untouched mountain scenery and variety of facilities.
The Banff Centre administers 60 meeting facilities, lecture the-
atres and auditoriums for five to 500 people, including the Max
Bell building’s 330-seat auditorium and the TransCanada Pipelines
Pavilion’s 10 meeting rooms for 30 to 50 people.
The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel opened in 1888. The
Scottish-style castle offers over 76,000 square feet of versatile
meeting or exhibit space accommodating 1,000 people.
The Banff Park Lodge Hotel and Conference Centre offers 18,897
square feet of meeting space, boardrooms and hospitality suites.
Banff Lodging Company has nine properties, including Banff
Rocky Mountain Resort which hosts 70 to 140 people. Banff
Ptarmigan Inn’s Atrium is three storeys tall and accommodates
175 people. At Banff Caribou Lodge and Spa, the Red Earth
Summit Room can accommodate 20 to 50.
In downtown Banff, the Mount Royal Hotel hosts groups of 50,
while the Brewster Mountain Lodge has a boardroom for up to
30. Irwin’s Mountain Inn provides a meeting space for up to 75.
Canmore – modern convenienceLocated just outside the Banff National Park boundary, Canmore
is a mountain retreat just one hour’s drive from Calgary’s interna-
tional travel connections.
Bellstar has three Canmore conference facilities. Solara Resort
& Spa is the newest property, featuring a variety of meeting
rooms for up to 200 people and a 96-seat theatre, the only venue
in Canmore offering a large projection screen with movie-quality
sound and retractable seating
Blackstone Mountain Lodge’s meeting room for up to 80
people has large windows and access to an open mountain
courtyard, as well as built-in surround sound, a podium and com-
plimentary wireless Internet.
The 800-square-foot Riverstone Hall at Mystic Springs boasts
river rock gas fireplace, vaulted ceilings, mountain views and
plenty of natural light, hosting events of up to 50 people.
Kananaskis – away from the crowdsKananaskis National Park offers Rocky Mountain scenery away from
the crowds, but is still less than 90 minutes away from Calgary.
Delta Lodge at Kananaskis offers a number of meeting rooms

Just next door, but far from ordinary
for 50 to 600 people, and seven different dining outlets.
The Best Western Pocaterra Inn has three meeting rooms that
can be converted into one large room for 150 people theatre-
style or 96 people banquet-style.
The Boundary Ranch in Kananaskis is a gorgeous mountain
valley venue for meetings and events for up to 1,000 people. It
also stages off-site activities to thrill guests, such as guided trail
rides, gunfights, Wild West rodeos and more.
Jasper – big opportunitiesJasper National Park is Canada’s largest mountain park, spanning
10,878 square kilometres of mountains, lakes, hot springs and visitor
facilities. It is a four-hour drive from both Edmonton and Calgary.
Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge’s 26,500 square feet of meeting
space can cater for 15 to 600 people, with the opportunity for a
post-meeting round at the hotel’s golf course.
Amethyst Lodge has indoor rooms accommodating up to
200 people, while outside, the western-themed Pyramid Gazebo
holds 90 people, and the surrounding grounds up to 400.
Hinton hospitalityHinton, a business hub for the West Yellowhead region, is a foot-
hills town with a four-season outdoor adventure culture.
For meeting space with accommodations, the 97-room
Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel has two conference rooms and
two fully licensed banquet rooms with business centre and
free Internet access. The 104-room Holiday Inn Hinton has a
1,500-square-foot meeting room with audiovisual services and
full catering for up to 100 guests.
Hinton Centre is the region’s largest venue with an
8,000-square-foot Grand Hall seating 900, two smaller salons
and three well-equipped boardrooms for business conventions
and board meetings of all sizes. Services available include event-
planning, catering and a commercial kitchen.
For retreats, the Black Cat Guest Ranch, 20 kilometres from
Hinton, is a quiet, private venue for productive retreats or confer-
ences. Its modern 16-room lodge has two meeting rooms for
meetings of eight to 32. The ranch offers inspiring views of the
Rockies and fabulous hiking and horseback riding.

Meeting central
By Grant Wing
Central Alberta’s abundance of heartland hospitality makes it
an easy choice for your next meeting.
There, in Alberta’s peaceful big-sky country, your group
can get away from big-city distractions and into the right frame
of mind for productive and memorable meetings.
Take a short drive and explore the exciting possibilities that
the heartland of Alberta has to offer.
Midway meeting pointLocated halfway between Edmonton and Calgary, Red Deer is the
perfect meeting place for delegates from both major cities. Red
Deer is a vibrant, friendly town with plenty of great venues offer-
ing fine hospitality without big-city prices.
The 217-room Capri Hotel, Trade and Conference Centre is
Central Alberta’s only four-star hotel. It can host 2,500 guests with
over 55,000 square feet of meeting and exhibit space. The Capri
has a 33,000-square-foot exhibition hall with 26-foot ceilings that
can accommodate full-size tractors. Smaller rooms can seat 2,000
theatre-style or 1,250 for plated dinners.
The 233-room Red Deer Lodge Hotel and Conference Centre
is another premier venue. Its 10 versatile meeting rooms, some
with exterior windows for natural light, total 7,000 square feet for
groups up to 120 people.
Near downtown, the conveniently located 142-room Holiday
Inn 67 Street, has 14 versatile meeting rooms totalling 16,000
square feet of meeting space with extensive audiovisual support
for catered events of up to 350 delegates.
The 98-room Black Knight Inn, just off Highway 2, has 10,400
square feet of display space accommodating up to 1,000 people.
Its eight meeting rooms include a 6,300-square-foot ballroom.
Rose city meetingsOnly 88 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, Camrose has small-
town charm with a big selection of fine meeting venues. Golfers
will find the 18-hole Camrose Golf Course challenging. Camrose’s
extensive sports and recreation facilities make it an excellent loca-
tion for sports tournaments.
For larger events, the Camrose Regional Exhibition has exhi-
bition, convention and banquet rooms totaling 107,200 square

most versatile venue with space for 416 people in a dinner setting
and 522 people in a lecture setting, with in-house catering, deco-
rating and audiovisual.
Another large venue, the Max Centre, is a multipurpose space
with a 1,200-square-foot dance floor/stage with theatre lighting,
digital audiovisual and on-site kitchen facilities with table seating
for 200.
The Ramada Drayton Valley, close to the MacKenzie Centre,
has a 624-square-foot meeting room for small meetings and pro-
vides business services and Internet.
Meetings on the borderLocated on the Alberta-Saskatchewan
border, the town of Lloydminster is an
ideal spot for groups from both provinces
to meet, work and play. The area has two
excellent golf courses and top-notch
sporting infrastructure, making it a mecca
for tournaments.
Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition
Association Convention Centre, the area’s
largest facility, has over 100,000 square
feet of space for large conventions, trade
shows and smaller meetings, with in-
house catering and equipment.
For a venue with accommodations, the

and banquet rooms with on-site cater-
ing, bar and audiovisual for up to 340
people.
feet of meeting space. It has a broad range of fully catered meet-
ing rooms suitable for small meetings and or for thousands of
delegates.
Close to the Camrose Exhibition Grounds and local arenas, the
74-room Ramada Camrose has a 1,560-square-foot meeting room
and a business centre and is near many local restaurants.
A recent addition to Camrose’s event venues, the newly
restored 100-year-old Bailey Theatre downtown has an auditorium,
a bistro and a rehearsal hall that can be rented for conferences and
corporate events. The vaudeville-era theatre with balcony will seat
400 people concert-style or 200 in dinner-theatre setup.
Vibrant valleyHome to a burgeoning oil and gas industry, the busy town of
Drayton Valley is another excellent meeting spot. Set in natural
beauty, the town has an extensive park and trail system for hiking
and biking, excellent golf courses, and waterways for canoeing
and kayaking.

Southern Alberta has it all – Rocky Mountains, beautiful lakes
and sweeping vistas. And if you’re looking for conference
facilities to host your next business meeting, southern Alberta
has that, too. In fact, the two main centres in the area – Medicine
Hat to the southeast and Lethbridge to the south of Calgary – pro-
vide several options for a comfortable and productive work meet-
ing or team-building session. And don’t forget charming Waterton
Lakes, in between the two larger centres. While smaller than its
neighbouring settlements, this resort town has great venues avail-
able for many sizes of gatherings.
The craggy western Badlands and the undulating eastern
Cypress Hills frame Medicine Hat. The city’s name is derived
from the native word saamis, which means the place where the
medicine man lost his hat. But you don’t have to lose yours if
you come here. The city has the best of natural environments.
Consequently, this makes for a perfect launching point for your
next conference or meeting. Uncommon locations like the
Medalta Potteries National Historic Site and the historic down-
town add dimension to visitors’ stays.
For large conferences, functions or events, head to the
Medicine Hat Lodge, which can hold up to 600 people in its nine
meeting rooms. And the Medicine Hat Lodge gets critical acclaim
– it comes up on the 2011 Condé Nast Traveler Gold List as one
of the world’s best places to stay. It’s the largest hotel facility for
conferences in the southern part of the province. A choice of
meeting rooms ranging from 260 to 6,380 square feet means a
grouping of almost any number can fit. Options to enhance your
meetings include video conferencing, secretarial services, printing
services and a private lobby off of the ballroom.

The Best Western in Medicine Hat, conveniently close to
the historical downtown, boasts meeting facilities located in
the lower level. One meeting room fits up to 40 people, and
comes with a sink and fridge. The hotel
can provide coffee and tea for meetings
as well as audiovisual equipment, fax and
photocopy services. Don’t forget the free
wireless Internet access available in all
public areas.
The Quality Inn and Convention Centre
has room for more meeting attendees.
There are four meeting rooms, one of
which has the option to split into two
smaller areas.
The largest room holds 400 people
and the smallest, 25. There’s a restaurant
on site, so you can book a meal with your
meeting. Projectors, screens, copy and fax
services are available, as are free local calls
and a wake-up service so you don’t miss
your morning meeting.
Travelling south, Lethbridge welcomes
you with its sunshine. It’s one of Canada’s
sunniest cities. Whether visitors want
scenic sites or history, Lethbridge can deliver. From the world’s
highest, longest train bridge, to the last First Nations battlefield in
North America, this city thrills.
The Travelodge has the potential to host up to 150 people
with its meeting spaces. Three conference rooms on the main
floor provide flexibility to suit your needs. Free wireless Internet
throughout the hotel helps you connect quickly to any vital
meeting presentation materials you might need. A business cen-
tre with photocopy and fax services is available. Dono Sushi, on
site, is easily accessed for a delicious business lunch.
Only five minutes from downtown Lethbridge, the cost-
effective University of Lethbridge provides a wide scope of
facilities and accommodations. No student discount necessary.
Ranging from lecture halls to ballrooms to regular meeting
rooms, the university provides for groups of almost any size, for
almost any purpose. Use these spaces for almost anything you
could think of, including lectures, speakers, exhibitions, career
fairs and debates.
Accommodations at the university are as varied as the meet-
ing places. Townhouses, apartments or dormitories allow for
every possible setup and budget and usually remain available
between May and August.
The Holiday Inn Express in Lethbridge welcomes businesspeo-
ple with a well-equipped business centre, including copy, fax and
Internet services. One meeting room is available and holds up to
40 people in a theatre-style seating arrangement. The meeting
room has presentation equipment – a DVD player, an overhead
projector and a whiteboard.
Journey onward to scenic Waterton Lakes. The largest con-
ference facility in the park is the Bayshore Inn Resort and Spa.
Situated right on the lake, the Bayshore can do it all, with small
breakout session rooms as well as larger areas that hold up to 300
people. The lakeside patio holds additional seats, and the tavern
beside the inn fits 400 people.
Technical options and equipment choices at the Bayshore
include a hi-tech sound system, overhead as well as laptop pro-
jectors, a 52-inch TV and a digital video recorder.
Whether the group’s large or small, fun-seeking or on a seri-
ous business retreat, southern Alberta has you covered right, left
and centre.

pitality, friendly people and vast areas
