President Carol Riley brought today’s meeting to order a minute early in order to get going on a full agenda!

Patti Mitchell led the group in the Pledge to the Flag, followed up by PP Gale Warshawsky with the days Inspiration. PP Chuck Braden was without his trusty cell phone to guide him with the Introduction formalities, but managed deftly, nonetheless. There were a good number of visiting Rotarians including Penny and Scott Olsen from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Also joining us was Pili Valderrama and Jenny Do from the brand-new Eco Club of Honolulu. And returning once again from Kiryu-Gonma, Japan was Ruriko Randolph and her husband Michael. Belting out the welcoming song with glee was PP Gale, and quickly followed by PE Paul McGillicuddy to formally welcome all the visitors. Dr. Charod Dodd was called upon to handle the Aloha Bucket and managed to squeeze a few bucks from PP Gale Warshwsky, PP Sally Blanchard, PP Tony Gedeon, and PP Dave Hamil. He also gave us a quick update on the status of the stock market (UP!).

Foundation Co-Chairs PP Sally Blanchard and Glen Perry were up next for a Foundation update. First, they asked PP Chuck up to explain a few details of the Bequest Society. And next to the microphone was PDG Roy King, where he presented President Carol official recognitions for achieving Major Donor status in Foundation

Giving, along with the 6 Diamond status in the Bequest Society. Everybody gave Pres. carol a rousing standing ovation for her generosity and commitment to Rotary. PP Bob Tellander gave a brief update on the Hawaii Rotary Youth Scholarship program, and mentioned we have 3 great candidates but only one will get the $5,000 club designated award. He thanks the volunteers on his committee helping to conduct the interviews and make the difficult choice. PP Stephen Morgan spoke of the upcoming 10th Annual Waikiki Elementary Garage Sale on February 29th. Clear out your closets and bring your items to the school on Friday February 28th, from 4 – 6 PM. All proceeds get donated to the school for much needed supplies. Pres. Carol reminded us that next week, February 12, we will have 20 visitors from Okayama-South, Japan Rotary Club. There will be a signing ceremony for the renewal of the Sister Club relationship – so please attend. A private reception will be held that evening – please contact Carol if you would like to attend. And on February 19 the Club will be meeting at Honolulu Hale (City Hall) in downtown Honolulu for a tour.

Glen Perry introduced our guest speaker today Mr. Ernie Nishizaki. Glen and Ernie go back a long way and worked together in the hospitality industry for many years. Mr. Nishizaki was a prior GM of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, amongst his many other positions. He is now on the Board of Directors for

the Blue Planet Foundation, a private non-profit agency dedicated to promoting clean energy. Blue Planet is focused on the environment and the many challenges we all face due to climate change. Ernie described the overall situation and how business leader in Hawaii can be proactive to helping reduce our carbon footprints. There are many ways of implementing programs that will reduce the amount of fossil fuels we use, and he is proud that Hawaii has set a goal of 100% clean energy by 2040. We all need to take this seriously and do our share or otherwise we may need to move club meeting to the top of Diamond Head.

PP Steve Koyama had the winning ticket, but alas pulled the dreaded red marble in today’s “investment portfolio”. Pres. Carol had everyone recite the 4-Way Test, then with a tap to the Rotary Bell brought the meeting to a close – 1 minute early!

Respectfully submitted, PP Dave Hamil, Scribe

WEEKLY REPORT — WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 05, 2020

10 Years of the Rotary-USAID water and sanitation partnership has produced good results

An old piece of railroad track is laid across a pit toilet. The walls are crumbling. The stench is overwhelming. It’s the only toilet for a school in rural Ghana, and most children refuse to use it. They do their business outside instead — or quit school altogether.

This is an all-too-common experience: Half of Ghana’s population lives in rural areas, and only 10 percent of those people have access to basic sanitation. Two-thirds can obtain safe drinking water — after a 30-minute round trip.

Since 2009, Rotary has been working to fix those deficiencies through a partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The partnership combines the business skills and local community leadership of Rotarian volunteers with the technical expertise of USAID. Rotary is contributing $9 million to the $18 million partnership; outside of eradicating polio, it is Rotary’s largest partnership effort. “We wondered how these two organizations could come together and exploit the synergy between them,” says Rotarian Ron Denham, a member of the Rotary-USAID steering committee.

Ghana was one of three pilot countries when the program kicked off. Projects were implemented in two phases: Phase 1 concluded in 2013, and Phase 2 will end in 2020. “As a result of this partnership, we’ve been able to reach out to some very deprived communities,” says Emmanuel Odotei, WASH management specialist for USAID/Ghana. “If USAID had tried to do this alone, or if Rotary had done it alone, we would never have achieved as much as we have today.”

Throughout, the focus of the program has been on accomplishing three goals: improving sanitation and hygiene in schools and health facilities; increasing community access to safe drinking water; and advocating for ample government financing of WASH — that is, water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Todays turn out was 37 Rotarians and guests. Keep it up!

Washington DC, July 25, 2019 – State Representative Bob and Mrs. Utufa’asili (Utu) McDermott were named Parents of the Year 2019 in the Civic Leadership category in a ceremony at The Washington Times newspaper in Washington, DC Tuesday evening.

Representative McDermott, who is in his seventh term in the Hawaii State Legislature, and Mrs. McDermott were honored in a citation that read:

“Matriculating from the Marines as a Captain after the first Gulf war, the Parents of three children decided to move back ot Hawaii. . They also rescued five more children from abusive and drug-abuse situations, bringing their brood to eight. ‘Our children are all bi-racial, and my wife and I are, so they fit in,’ he said. Today, they are blessed with eight grandchildren and growing. He has been vigilant in protecting the residents of the Ewa District, preventing an objectionable sexual lifestyles program for 10-year-olds that was proposed for public schools in violation of parental rights. Mrs. McDermott serves in two hospitals, applying her training as a Master of Pastoral Theology, to comfort the dying. She is the spiritual backbone of the family, ensuring regular church attendance and leading the adult ministry at her parish. Adopting children and continual service in the public sphere is their way to return blessings from God. In giving back, they are bright beacons of light, shining by example, for their family and community.”
