March Meeting for framing Practicum for 2 year B Ed Program Dr Vasundhara Padmanabhan along with two of the
faculty members, Ms Rupal Thakkar & Ms Hema Peese
got the opportunity to frame the syllabus for Practicum in
the two year B Ed program. The team gave brilliant inputs
on the different aspects of the practicum with inputs by
experts from all the institutions. Looking at the best option
and for the betterment of the students who would be
opting for the two year B Ed Program the team brought
out an enriched practicum curriculum.

On March 3, 2015 a „Math Fair‟ 2015, was organized which actually celebrated the event with
an objective of ‘Math Learning by Understanding by All'. Navnirmiti Eduquality had taken
Math Fair series in 3 BMC Schools of Mumbai. Ms Usha Sharma (faculty member) got the

opportunity to visit the fair.Through this project the students of the BMC schools were trained
by Mr Amol Ubale from HBCSE in such a way that they organized all the activities. Many
exhibits were displayed where the students got the opportunity to explain the charts. Even
students got the opportunity to explain the rules of the games. The school gave the platform to
the students to learn through experiential learning. Maths Fair was created where students
actually went to the market and learnt different concepts in Maths. The event was very
beneficial since it threw many ideas for the pre service teachers.

Inter collegiate Festival Pratyush
Truly said. Our Inter collegiate Festival Pratyush which was organized on March 7, 2015 at K
J Somaiya Comprehensive College of Education, Training & Research. It also aimed at rebirth
of History. It offered a unique opportunity to revisit the Indian History by making it come alive
on stage since the theme for this year was „History Revisited.‟ It was an event of 20 minute
performance which included the following Dance- drama, Role play, Costumes, Props,
Multimedia/Background effect, Narration. The criterion of evaluation of the event was
originality/creativity, co ordination /seamless blending, style/grace/rich historical
experience, overall audio visual impact. Different B Ed colleges participated in the event.
The participant colleges enthusiastically depicted
different dynasties like Maratha dynasty, Haryanka

Dynasty, etc. Out of the participant colleges, K J Somaiya Comprehensive College of Education,
Training & Research bagged the winning trophy. Overall the performances were enthralling &
it actually made the audience sit at the end of their seats.
Celebration of Women’s Day The International Women‟s day which falls on
the March 8 was celebrated. Throughout the
year the student council committee had been
active for each event. Similarly for this
particular event too they worked hard to
collect the articles of eminent feminists who
have led revolutionary movement in the past
.Apart from this even the examples of women
entrepreneurs in the society were displayed in
the form of charts. The aim was to empower the most vulnerable section of the society the
women. Overall the day had the mixture of inspiration, knowledge and value, wherein each and
every member looked out for the role models of the past and aimed to give their best efforts in
future.

Research. The primary objective of HEF
has always been to facilitate and promote
excellence in the landscape of higher
education in India. This event was led by Dr A K Sen Gupta, Founder and Convener, HEF.

Themes included „Innovation in Higher Education‟ & „Technology as Enabler of Education‟. Dr
Satish Ailawadi, Director, K J Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research
inaugurated the session .Eminent speakers like Dr Satish Ailawadi, Dr Indira Parekh, Founder
Director, FLAME, Mr Jagdeep Kapoor CMD, Samsika Marketing Consultant, Dr
Ramamurthy Natarajan Former Director, IIT (Madras), Mr Ashok Kalbag, Mentor, Vigyan
Ashram and many more delegates enlightened the audience with wonderful case studies &
research based papers on the different themes were presented.Dr Rajan Saxena, Vice
Chancellor, NMIMS University & Dr Ganesh Natarajan, Vice Chairman & CEO, Zensar
Technologies presided on the valedictory session. Each speaker spoke on the theme and a few
presented papers. All the faculty and students got rich inputs on the latest innovations in
education.
SUPW (Socially Useful Productive Work)
SUPW (Socially Useful Productive Work for the academic year
2014-15 was conducted successfully in 2 sessions. On March 10,
2015 from 11:00am to 1:00 pm, Ms. Vrushali Ghate, Teacher
educator at our sister institution of S.K.Somaiya D.Ed College
conducted a workshop on Warli painting. She taught the students
the various nuances of the art form, using poster paint and brush.
Students learnt the paintings etching on clay pots, cloth pieces and
tinted paper. The students were very much engrossed in this art form and wanted to do more.
On March 14, 2015, 4 students of B.Ed: Ms. Riddhi Chheda, Ms.
Pooja Lokare, Ms. Krunali and Ms. Sadaf Khan volunteered to
teach their B.Ed colleagues various arts and crafts .The session
was conducted by Ms. Riddhi Chheda.She taught the students to
make Fur Puppet ie bunny rabbits, which they thoroughly
enjoyed. Students participated whole heartedly in this workshop.

Hands on Experiments
Science students of K.J. Somaiya Comprehensive College of Education, Training and Research,
conducted 2 experiments under the guidance of Dr. Sreetanuka Nath, Science Teacher, in the
Chemistry lab of Vinay Mandir Junior College. The 1st
experiment was “Using standard solution of oxalic acid,
determine the strength of a given solution of sodium hydroxide”
where they had to find the gm/l (result was 3.77g/l) and
molarity (0.09) of the NaOH, while the 2nd experiment was “to
analyze qualitatively the given salt and detect one acidic and one
basic radical present in it” a) “Test for Basic Radical” (Detection
of Groups) and b) “Test for Acidic Radical”. All the experiments
were from Grade XI.
Physics Experiments
The science students of K.J.Somaiya Comprehensive College of Education, Training and
Research, conducted 4 experiments in the physics lab of Vinay Mandir Junior college under the
guidance of Dr. Sreetanuka Nath. The experiments conducted were as follows:
1. To measure the thickness of metal strip
using a screw gauge.
2. To measure the size of metal ball using
vernier caliper.
3. Find angle of deviation using prism.
4. To measure the flow of current using ohms
law.

Faculty Development Initiatives through syllabus revision meet
Each teacher got the opportunity to attend their syllabus meet for the respective subjects in
order to frame the syllabus for the two year B Ed program .For the Mathematics Syllabus
Revision meeting which was held on March 26, 2015 in Hansraj Jivandas College of
Education, Ms Usha Sharma got the opportunity to give the inputs for framing an enriched
curriculum in collaboration with the Maths teachers form different colleges of Education.
Student & Faculty Development Initiatives - Research Paper reading
sessions The IQAC Cell of K.J. Somaiya Comprehensive College of Education, Training and Research
organized Research paper reading session under series Gyanpushpanjali on the occasion of
the silver jubilee year of the institution. The third phase of the session included three more
presentations from March 23 till March 30, 2015 .The researchers presenting their research
work were the Doctoral Students pursuing PH. D. in Homi Bhabha Centre for Science
Education. The timings for the same were, Saturday 3.30 pm to 5.00 pm. The organizer of the

HBCSE Insights from an urban low-income settlement
(Mon.)
All the sessions were very interactive. Faculty members and students were present for the
sessions. The presenters elaborated on the procedure for narrowing down upon the title,
development of conceptual framework, using qualitative research technique and procedures for
data collection and analysis. Overall the sessions were enriching and provide an insight into
qualitative research methodologies and social issues.
Campus placement (Oberoi Intl)
Placement Cell has been functioning effectively keeping in mind the objective of student
welfare so that the best students get absorbed by reputed institutions. On March 16, 2015 one
of the esteemed schools Oberoi International was invited for the campus placements. It
carried out the orientation program which helped the students to know about the curriculum &
the functioning of the school. All the students interested gave their interviews.
A step towards fulfilling the dream of being teacher educator: M.Ed.
internship
The Internship programme by all the M.Ed.
students began from March 24, 2015. As a
form of training the aspiring teacher educators,
this was highly emphasized. During this period
they were required to take individual classes
with innovative teaching strategies on one of
the main papers and one special field. They
made necessary lesson observations. In

addition to these they collaborated and helped out in various academic and co-curricular
pursuits of this institution.
M.Ed. dissertation submission
As a part of M.Ed. curriculum the learners have to submit a research based dissertation.
Learners conducted research on an array of topics starting from different innovative teaching
learning strategies to technological innovations, Digital Storytelling Strategy, Task Based
Learning Strategy, ICT Integrated Instructional Module, Learning Cycle Model, Parallel
Education System, Dialogic Teaching and Argumentation, Parental Sensitization Module, Peer
Tutoring, Fostering Higher Order Thinking Skills, Experiential Learning Module, Classroom
Engagement Skills, Game based Learning Strategies. The learner gained much from this
practicum in terms of writing research proposals, aims, objectives, sampling, research design,
methodology, statistical techniques etc. The composition of this exquisite bit took almost four
months at the end of which it was submitted with great pride to the institution on 15th March.
Innovation Festival, at the Nehru Science Centre, Worli
On March 28, 2015 the faculty got a wonderful opportunity to attend the Innovation Festival,
at the Nehru Science Centre, Worli. Participants from fields of art, craft, science and
technology from across the country showcased new and emerging concepts at the event. The
Centre is a National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) establishment and the festival aimed
at providing a platform for the artisans, creators, makers and
innovators to showcase their innovation, talent and creativity
to a large number of visitors especially school children. The
festival projected creativity from scrap projects, „challenge
yourself‟ booths, hands-on opportunity spaces, and design
contests for school and college students, in addition to
lectures/workshops.

Proctor Meet
Like always even in the Semester 2 the mentor teachers met up with their proctorial team to
ease several difficulties in their scholastic as well as co scholastic aspects to create more mature
and efficient individuals who will gradually be able to face the real life challenges successfully
and independently. The session was on March 17, 2015.Here students could discuss the
academic, personal, vocational difficulties. Thus this feature acted as a student support in the
times of difficulties. It acted as a moral support since the students could discuss all their
anxieties related to jobs and academics .In few cases the students were referred to discuss their
problem to the counselor Ms Shweta Padmanabhan.
Book reviews by B Ed Students

allow in more light.”

Book reviews gave the opportunity to teachers to open the world to the other student teachers.
The books on different subjects Science, Management, Philosophy, Psychology etc were the
main areas of interest. Since the orientation was already done in the month of February the B
Ed students presented the book reviews in variety of subjects. Students made use of ICT to
present the book along with relevant videos if required. The selection of book was as per the
choice of participants so the presentations were very interesting.
Essay Examinations
Essay examinations were conducted for the courses 11 & 12 for giving students a practice on
writing 10 marks questions. Students are given drill on what are the ideal points in a particular
answer. What may be criteria of a good answer for eg introduction, presentations using concept
map, conclusion, focusing on question words such as justify, examine etc. Students are given

feedback of their answers as and when the teachers finish the corrections. Here the teacher
again discusses the ideal answer

Ms Prachi Singhi from Akanksha –NGO also is one
of the innovators who has taken the responsibility for
“Differentiation and Student Ownership". Ms Singhi
was invited on March 19 so as to set an example for
the pre service teachers. She shared her innovative
strategies and introduced the pre service teachers to
the concept of literature circles .Apart from this she
also shared how the organisation has been using
resources from Aga Khan Foundation. Through the innovative strategies the organisation has
been working for the less privileged students. Thus it set a very inspiring example for the pre
service teacher to be followed.

The concept of co teaching introduced in the month of March gave a platform to all the faculty
to collaborate and showcase their collective expertise on the topics of B Ed.It began with Dr
Vasundhara Padmanabhan, Principal of our institution and one of the faculty Ms Usha
Sharma who collaborated to teach a topic of Psychology of Learning .Followed to this Ms
Usha Sharma collaborated with Ms Kruttika Bhat to teach a topic of Sociological Foundations
of Education. Later Dr Sreetanuka Nath & Ms Kruttika Bhat collaborated to teach a topic of
ICT in Education & Finally Ms Rupal Thakkar gave her inputs along with Ms Takshashila
Jadhav on a topic from Educational Management. The faculty proved that they were working

independently toward one goal in unison.Even the students appreciated since they were
benefitted since the faculty actually displayed shared responsibility and did justice to the
different topics.
Research Guidance for B Ed students
As part of B.Ed. curriculum, all the students are expected to complete their research project as
proposed by different teacher in-charges. The guidance went on for the topics as the students
were in different phases. A few of them were doing data collection so they were allowed to
conduct their session in the B Ed class itself as their sample were
B Ed students whereas a few others had to go to the sister institutions as per their topic they
went to collect data. A few students were in the stage of preparing awareness program related
to the topic of female foeticide. Necessary guidance was given to the students regarding proper
implementation of the steps.
Simulated teaching-Concept Attainment Model
After the completion of PT lessons it was time to try out innovative teaching techniques in
simulated setting. Thus the students were initially oriented on March 27, 2015. The Concept
Attainment Model Technique was demonstrated by all method masters in different subjects
followed by student‟s demonstration of the same. The students were guided on the selection of
the topic which would be suitable for CAM.
Intensive study endeavors…
Study circles
The integrity of this institution is to enhance the achievement and competencies of the learners
who enter this sacred doorway. The institution‟s pride becomes multifold when its learners
extent new level towards perfection. To concretize this noble idea the institution conducts
tutorials every year which is backed by remedial teaching. For the tutorials this year, study
circles were conducted. In the study circles the students got idea of writing answers to

university based questions. For a few paper the faculty actually discussed the question bank
which included different type of questions essay and short questions. Through this act the
improvements of the learners was realized.
A helping hand ……
Counseling session by Ms Shweta Padmanabhan
Student support being one of the major features of our institution, we make sure that the
students get counseling at difficult stages of the course. Thus this year we appointed Ms
Shweta Padmanabhan, as a counselor for the students of B Ed, M Ed & PGDME. On every
Wednesday in semester 2 from January 28, 2014, students could avail the facility of counseling
from 9 am to 10 am in the college premises. The students could discuss any kind of difficulty
academic, personal, vocational difficulties. Student‟s records were systematically documented
and stored with strict confidentiality. The counseling cell functioned effectively due to the
support of Ms Shweta. Students had the flexibility of availing the facility of counseling out of
college in case the students hesitated to approach her in the college.
Guest lecture on Family Business
AIFMB (Institute of Family Managed Business Advisor,
Prof. Parimal Merchant Asian visited our Institution on
March 23, 2015 to inspire the women students to participate
and initiate family business. Youngsters of today face many
challenges and often seem to lack direction. This is especially
true for children of Business Families according to him. He
expressed his views and talked about the values of his
organization AIFMB. He elaborated on how AIFMB values
represented a strong belief that the progress of Asian
economies is going to be driven by excellence of family businesses and not by MNCs. The
family businesses are likely to outperform non-family business primarily due to owner

identification, unconventional strategies and skills in managing contradictions. The family
institution in Asia shares a number of similar family values and is tuned for ensuring continuity
of family business. He clarified that it is important to reinforce these values and promote pride
and confidence in joining the family business. It is also necessary to bolster the possibilities of
metamorphosis of a grocery store into Wal Mart. AIFMB looks forward to a day when
companies will proudly announce that they are a family business – as it stands for long term
perspective, relationship and trust. It was very engrossing and students thoroughy enjoyed it.
Sale of books
Over the years library received the books on donation but some
books were included in the library collection. Some books were
left. So Sale of the books had been arranged on March 23 to
March 25, 2015. In order to encourage the faculty and the
students, a special offer was kept. Books were sold on half-price.
All our faculties and students showed great interest in visiting
to know about various books of their interest. In addition to this
some faculties of K. J. Somaiya College of Arts & Science have
also visited the sale. Some students and faculty members purchased the books.
