Campus Chatter: An Update from the Dairy Science Club

To kick off 2016, Dairy Science Club members took part in the 100th annual PA Farm Show. Members assisted with the PDCA Dairy Judging Contest for adults and conducted a youth judging contest for 4-H and FFA members. Members also assisted with the Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association cheese stand. During the last week of January, Dairy Science Club members Amber Gabel, Michelle Hartzell, and Jaylene Lesher were members of the second place team at the National Beef Cattlemen’s Association quiz bowl contest in San Diego.

Club members were very active at the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Convention in early February. More than 30 members helped conduct the quiz bowl and jeopar-dy contests, while others participated in the two events. More than 30 junior teams competed in the quiz bowl! Congratulations to the teams from Centre and Lancaster Counties for winning their divisions.

The first weekend of February was busy as Penn State traveled to the University of Connecticut for NESA during the same weekend as the Junior Holstein Convention and placed second in the overall institution rankings.

On March 4, club members headed to Clarion to conduct the Pennsylvania

Jersey Jeopardy contest at the state Jersey convention. After the competition, members continued on to Pittsburgh Airport for spring trip. On March 5, 38 club members and chaperones headed to Colorado for five days. They spent the weekend in Colorado Springs visiting several attractions and landmarks. Students toured the U.S. Olympic Train-ing Facility and hiked in Garden of the Gods on Saturday. Sunday’s agenda was highlighted by a visit to the U.S. Air Force Academy before heading north to Estes Park and the YMCA of the Rockies. After hiking in snow at Rocky Mountain National Park on Monday, the group visited several large dairy farms ranging in size from 1,500 to 5,000 cows on Tuesday and Wednesday. Other highlights included a 50,000 head lamb feedlot, a 90,000 head beef feedlot, and a large milk processing facility.

On March 19, the club hosted the spring judging contest. This is one of the club’s oldest activities, and more than 200 4-H, FFA and collegiate contestants judged six classes from the Penn State herd. April will also be a busy month with events such as Osteochallenge, the 5-kilometer walk/run that benefits the National Osteoporosis Foundation, and Meet a Farm Animal Day. The Penn State Dairy Expo will take place on Saturday, April 23, and the club awards banquet is scheduled for April 27.

DAS Alumni Tailgate The PSU Dairymen’s Club, Stockmen’s Club and Poultry Science Club held the 10th annual football tailgate for alumni prior to the Oct. 31, 2015 game. Alumni were able to enjoy the Nittany Lions’ blowout victory over the Fighting Illini, 39-0. Watch the Dairymen’s Club website and Facebook page for information about the 2016 DAS tailgate. If you’re interested in helping with the event, contact Dan Oliver.

Club members raise funds for Evan YoderAt the 2015 Nittany Lion Fall Classic, the Penn State Dairy Science Club hosted a breakfast to benefit Evan Yoder, a recent graduate of Penn State who was an active member of the club. In July 2015, the Huntingdon, Pa., native was found unconscious at Greenwood Park while spending time with his family. The breakfast was held in the Mezzanine area of the Snider Ag Arena from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. In addition to the breakfast, a set of custom, handmade Penn State corn hole boards were auctioned off during the sale to benefit Evan and his family.

If you’d like to donate to the fund, make a check payable to the Evan Yoder Fund and mail to:
