PARENT CYBER SAFETY SESSION Yesterday we were fortunate to have Leading Senior Constable Robbie Noggler visit our school to deliver 2 Cyber Safety sessions the first to our year 3/4 students, and the second to our year 5/6 students and a number of parents who were able to attend. Robbie has presented to our staff, students and parents over the past few years and has done a wonderful job in explaining the potential pitfalls of the internet in a way that resonates with students. We thank him for spending some of his time educating us all on the very relevant issue of cyber safety. For me the key message is that you need to be actively aware of what your kids are doing on laptops, tablets, phones and devices and monitor this effectively. Children should not have devices in their rooms or tucked away. Screens should always face the door so they can be easily viewed at a glance. For more information check out: www.esafety.gov.au/aftercyberbullying 2017 NAPLAN Testing (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy) As discussed last week this week is NAPLAN week for Years 3 and 5 students from across the country. Tests started today and will be covered over tomorrow and Thursday with a very brief opportunity to conduct catch up tests on Friday. We ask that people please stay out of the senior learning environment and the 3/4 C&H portable (nearest the veggie patch) to avoid distracting students. We wish all participating students the very best with these tests and encourage them to do their best. Werribee Zoo Excursion Last week the year 1/2 students had an amazing opportunity to go on an excursion to the Werribee Zoo to look at animal habitats. The students were treated to some up close and personal experiences with the animals especially a slow moving Rhino who blocked the safari bus’s path for a time. Other the students came back with some great experiences and lots of stories to tell. Well done to the year 1/2 for organising a wonderful excursion. Barwon South East Network Meeting Last week I attended the Barwon South East (BSE) Network meeting and participated along with my colleagues in some excellent work around building communities of practice across our network and the challenges and opportunities that come from the diverse mix of schools we have in the BSE Network. We also had a good opportunity to evaluate some of our data as a network and find commonalities and differences between our data and that of our neighbouring networks. About our Central Bearded Dragons Rango and Scales Hi everyone now that we have names for our lizards I thought I would be appropriate to give you a few tips on how to identify them. According to our Year 5/6 Lizard team experts Rango is slightly smaller and has lost the tip of his tail so it is a little shorter. So there fore Scales is slightly bigger and he has a longer tail. Like all reptiles Bearded Dragons shed their skin and apparently young bearded dragons need assistance with shedding their skin on their tails and toes so that they don’t become constricted and fall off (which is what happened to the tip of Rango’s tail did. Their enclosure has heat lamps at one end to keep the enclosure warm and also a UV globe to give them the “sunshine” they need. At the moment they live on a diet of juvenile Bearded Dragon food sprinkled with calcium powder (to keep their bones strong) but… their favourite food is baby crickets which they love. As they grow their food will become a little more diverse a but in line with advice from the lizard suppliers. Their enclosure is kept quite warm as discussed and probably their favourite place is sitting on their basking rocks. While they stay quite still most of the time they are able to move pretty quickly when they feel like it and they particularly like to dart after the crickets if they see them passing by. We hope you like the picture on the front of the newsletter and can come and visit the lizards some time. Continued over page…….

Education Week Education Week is the week beginning the 22nd of May and hopefully by now if you are a Kinder parent you will have received your invitation to visit our school and participate in a school tour. On Tuesday May the 22

school please contact Jeff at OSHC if you require care for your children. For all of our parents and the public you will be able to attend our open day Friday the 26

Last Monday the 1/2 students went to Werribee Open Range Zoo, This excursion was part of our Inquiry topic about animal habitats. We got to explore the Zoo and look at all of the animals, such as the Lion cubs and Gorillas. Then we had a session with the Zoo Keepers and some very old Tortoises. The day finished with the Safari Bus Tour. On the tour, we were chased by a Rhinoceros. We had the best day! Thanks to Mr Pidd for organising and the other 1/2 teachers for a great day. Clear Communication

Clear communication is a goal to strive for in every area of life. Work becomes improved if we know ex-

actly what is expected of us. Our relationships are enhanced if we can be open and honest with each

other. Our children will become more motivated if we are able to fully communicate with them in a lan-

guage they understand.

The following strategies will help:

When you have made a decision ensure that the standards are clear and the limits and boundaries

are fully understood.

Provide your rationale for the decision and allow your children to understand the reasons for your

decision.

If appropriate allow your son/daughter to have input into the decision and for them to feel heard and

valued.

Great Mother’s Day gift!

Central Bearded Dragons

These are two new lizards Rango and Scales. Rango is on the left and Scales on the right. They love eating crickets while sitting on their warm rocks, but we have to make sure the tank stays at the right temperature. We also need to handle and play with them which helps us bond with them. We look forward to seeing them grow and become part of the CSPS animal family!!! - Hannah C

GEELONG COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

The Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal together with the Sidney Myer Fund, the Origin, Potter, ACF, Ross, Flett, Buckland and Menzies Foundations along with Target and the Geelong Community Foundation are proud to again bring us the Back to School Program. Our school has been provided with 22 Target Gift Cards valued at $50 each to help families with the costs associated with the start of the school year. Consultation with staff and consideration of several factors went into choosing just 22 out of 221 families. If you received a gift card and don’t wish to use it, please return it to the office so it can be forwarded to another family. We thank Geelong Community Foundation and all the sponsors for providing this assistance to some of our families.

FIDGET TOYS AT SCHOOL Recently, there has been a surge of fidget toys coming to school from home. In particular, the latest craze includes fidget spinners and fidget cubes. For some children fidget toys may assist learning and focus, however, it can also prove to be a distraction. Basically, a fidget is a tool to focus, not a toy.

As a school, we encourage home/school partnerships and welcome parents speaking to teachers about bringing things from home. However, the teachers make the final call as to whether items are helping or hindering learning. If the teacher deems a fidget to be distracting to your child’s learning, your child will be asked to keep the fidget in their school bag. As a school we have put a lot of time and resources into studying and purchasing appropriate equipment to support students learning. We have used with great effect strategies such as weighted toys, alternate seating, resistive bands and purposeful

exercise routines. A fidget is just one strategy that may be used. Clifton Springs Primary School is proud to provide our students with opportunities to experiment and learn about ways to regulate their bodies to support learning and concentration. If you have any concerns or questions regarding this please speak to your classroom teacher.
