Meet our chair: Dr. Johnny V. Sparks joins the BSU Department of Journalism from Central Michigan University (CMU), where he served as associate professor of advertising in the Department of Journalism. Dr. Sparks was also the director of CMU’s Center for Innovation, Collaboration & Engagement. Dr. Sparks first visited BSU’s Department of Journalism in 2013 and came away, he said, greatly impressed with the department’s wealth of resources for advancing the study of journalism, public relations, advertising and emerging media. Ever since that visit, he added, “I have dreamed of managing Cardinal-caliber resources. At BSU, journalism faculty and students are limited only by the bounds of their imagination. BSU possesses the potential to lead the nation in journalism innovation and education.” Dr. Sparks views the chairperson position as a “rare and immediate” opportunity to empower BSU students, faculty and staff. He believes our department’s “exceptional technological resources” and “premier educational facilities” can serve to vastly enrich the field of communication, thereby improving lives at Ball State and beyond. “Stories better told,” he said, “promote lives better lived. I hope to inspire alumni, students and faculty to believe in the power of stories – stories told in the context of professional journalism, advertising, public relations and emerging media.” Such storytelling, Dr. Sparks believes, helps “to build a better world.” As such, he is committed to act as a champion of the Cardinal cause, thereby sharing and promoting the stories and storytellers of BSU journalism.

Meet our chair:

Dr.

BSU possesses the potential to lead the nation in journalism innovation and education.”

Dr.

I hope to inspire alumni, students and faculty to believe in the power of stories – stories told in the context of professional journalism, advertising, public relations and emerging media.”

Such storytelling, Dr. Sparks believes, helps “to build a better world.” As such, he is committed to act as a champion of the Cardinal cause, thereby sharing and promoting the stories and storytellers of BSU journalism.

The Ball State Department of Journalism is proud to welcome Dr. Sparks into the ongoing narrative of our department.
