Meet International Peacemaker Erlinda Maria Quesada Angulo, Costa Rica Erlinda Quesada has been an activist since her early twenties. In 2000, she and other activists became alarmed by the negative impacts of the expanding pineapple plantations in the Caribbean region of Costa Rica. In 2004, she helped establish the National Front of Sectors Impacted by Pineapple Production (FRENASAPP). She is the coordinator and community promoter for FRENASAPP in the Caribbean region of Costa Rica. She served for ten years on the city council for the municipality of Guacima. Currently she serves as president of the Environmental Council for the Tortuguero Conservation Area. Fast Facts about Costa Rica Costa Rica has one of the highest life expectancy rates in Central America: 75 years. Tourism and commerce are Costa Rica’s main industries, accounting for 68% of its GDP. It has a growing technology/computer chip industry, and its main agricultural products include bananas, coffee, sugar, and beef. About three-quarters of Costa Ricans are Roman Catholic and approximately 15% are Protestant. Our Partners The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has a long history of ministry in Costa Rica, joining partner groups and mission personnel in theological education, new church development, evangelism and health ministries. Our ministry primarily supports the Latin American Bible University, an ecumenical university in San Jose, founded in 1923. In this ecumenical learning environment, students and teachers study theology — bringing their diverse experiences — and opening one another’s eyes to how the Church might respond to the unique context of God’s suffering people in Latin America. 2019 Presbyterian Peacemaking and International Peacemakers Programs The International Peacemaking Program makes it possible for Presbyterians all over the U.S. to receive insight, wisdom and instruction from innovative leaders of partner denominations and partner organizations around the world. Since 1984, the Presbyterian Mission Agency has hosted approximately 300 International Peacemakers from 60 countries. These visits have opened hearts and minds, touched lives, established relationships and inspired new ministries. By sharing stories of their work and witness, the peacemakers help us understand peace and justice concerns around the world and provide insights that can inspire us to greater faithfulness. Their visits broaden our sense of God’s inclusive family and help equip us to build a culture of peace and nonviolence for all God’s children. Visit presbyterianmission.org/ministries/peacemaking. Support of the Peace & Global Witness Offering makes the International Peacemaker Program possible, as well as other initiatives of peacemaking and reconciliation throughout the denomination. Through your support, Presbyterians are able to connect with one another and with leaders in peace and reconciliation practices throughout the U.S. and around the world, as well as develop resources and training to better equip congregations and individuals to do effective peacemaking work in their communities and around the world. Visit pcusa.org/peace-global By giving to support the peace ministries of Presbyterian Mission, we work to share Christ’s peace with one another, beyond our doors, beyond our community and across boundaries.
